Since this piece ended up getting over 20k views under my nose, I figured it'd be best to give the viewer a jumping off point to learn more / have more context for what is mentioned in the video itself!

This particular video was made because I personally feel that Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is quite undervalued today. Something I consider unfortunate. Hopefully gushing about the positives of the film can convince you otherwise!

snow white is so incredibly important to me, vying for the top spot as my favorite princess next to cinderella and jasmine. she holds a different kind of strength than someone like merida or moana, and the values of hard work, kindness, and optimism will never go out of style. i wonder if you've seen there will be fudd's video titled "why snow white is (still) the strongest disney princess"? he hits on a lot of the same points you do, and it's so nice to see others appreciate both the artistry and work put into the movie, and don't discredit it. there's a reason that it's the benchmark for 2d animation, and in storytelling. there's nothing wrong with a simple story when it nails the emotional story beats the way snow white does!

You are not rabbling on, Sir. Please, never apologize for having passion, respect, and affection for groundbreaking works in any performance medium. I would rather watch Snow White, Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty than any "animation films" of the "modern era."

I hate how people say oh Snow White is so weak. No, she’s not physically strong, but she certainly mentally strong. If you if you ask me that’s even better.

The crazy thing is the animation in the 30s is better quality than anything today....

I have always loved this movie, and hated how people called Snow White a maiden in distress, when she is a hard worker that wishes for her dream to come true, but never expects it without a price. She cleaned up the dwarfs cottage because she knew she couldn't just stay for free. She is a symbol of a hard working person in the great depression. And ofc she's gonna be helpless sometimes. 14 or not she is still young, and you can tell. Plus she handled herself quite well for being young, and hiding from a mad woman trying to kill her. BTW I just love this movie. My favorite scene is definitely the spooky forest scene. It captures her anxiety, and fear so well.

I love Snow White I always have, and always will. I honestly I prefer the classic Disney princesses to the modern ones and don’t even get me started on how they’re trying to remake the classics to make them more modern that really irritates me.

The story about Walt telling Ub to draw Mickey on a napkin, you said you wanted a source? Well, I first read about that in the book Walt Disney: the triumph of the American imagination by Neal Gabler, page 178. And the endnotes source it from another book, The Hand Behind the Mouse, cowritten by Iwerks' granddaughter. The story was originally told by Ub's wife.

Oh, how I wish Disney had the kind of sincerity shown in this movie AND video essay instead of opting for beating the dead horse of deconstructing their IPs and legacy.

Snow White is outdated I somewhat agree but it made such an impact to the animation world that it’s somehow nit outdated. No other disney film has made this type of major impact. ( i do hope they can one day) Also great Video essay! Subbed!

This analysis is so important right now amidst the whole Rachel Zeagler fiasco. Someone send this to her so she can educate herself.

Snow white may be a "basic" movie compared to what we have today in the animation landscape, but its such a enjoyable experience. I made sure to show it to my little cousins at the beggining of quarantine and it was really funny to see them actually get invested in the story and sad when they thought snow white was dead, l can only imagine how the people watching it for the first time back then were feeling.

And here comes Disney to absolutely ablitterate this masterpiece after almost a century later

  • @Sandstripe1

This movie came out during or not long after the Great Depression. Disney wanted to show a protagonist that still smiled and remained optimistic and hard working despite the fact that she had just lost everything and was in the lowest point of her life. The scene in the forest after her panic attack really shows her strength. This character was intentioned to be that one voice of optimism shown to an audience living in the most difficult time in history. Snow White isnt a role model because shes a beautiful princess, shes a role model to young and old that works hard and smile through a song. This is something modern Disney has forgotten and it saddens me deeply.

I haven’t revisited Snow White since I was a very young child. I’ll admit that I was swept up in the modern “criticisms” of her character, but once I grew up and worked on my own media literacy outside of what was needed for school, I found out what made her my favorite princess all over again. She was a

Snow white is imo the best Princess. When we are first introduced to her she's in rags yet she's pure and optimistic, basically making the best of her circumstances. Then when she flees from the huntsman terrified and the animals greet her, who is she more concerned with? The animals she actually apologises to them, again showing pure kindness and empathy. Then she learns from the animals how to get through a hard time by singing. Teaching us all again no matter how hard life gets you can get through it, if you make the best of it which would have been so pertant during the great depression. Then she thinks the dwarfs are orphans and again she thinks of them first. Then when she hopes to live with them she doesn't expect something for nothing she's willing to do something for it again teaching us not to expect something for nothing in life, we have to work hard. Contrast that with a lot of modern princesses who start of doing okay often, but want more out of life, often obsessed with identity or doing more with their life, and then go of on a grand adventure. Its not that the latter is bad, it's just a bit more ego driven. Snow has things happen to her and her strength of character gets her through she never looses her hope, remainds kind and compassionate, and grateful for what she has and far more relatable. None of us are going to go on grand adventures but all of us will come up against hard times and its how we choose to work through it that makes us who we are. I think she's such a misunderstood character and tbh if we had another character like her we could learn a lot from her. Plus I think her character will endure. Messages of hard work, endurance, strength of character, will live on. Doubt that people will be humming along to moana, or frozen nearly 100 years from now.
