Pat Metheny, Return to Forever, Weather Report - I was a teenager in the 70's - amongst other greats - these innovators were years ahead of their time - In a class that really didn't exist at that time. I and friend's were listening to this and blown away. Still blown away by it today.
"Hear!" I love it! Listening to this track is amazing because, as great as this music is, Metheny just got better. Like WAY better. He just continues to summon incredible resources of musicianship and creativity.
Mate seriously, this guy talks about himself and The Beatles in the same sentence, Find the link of McCartney literally saying less is more and, on his first listen (which Pat sent to him says Him) and Sugars were laughing so hard they in the car they had to pull over. It's hilarious!
Comparing Jaco and Bona is not fair at all, they are (were) both absolutely phenomenal musicians, and at this level it is not about who played the tune better, but more about personal preference.
The fact that Bona is doing his best to mimic Jaco speaks for itself. It's not an ego thing. Bona obviously was very inspired by Jaco to emulate his tone and style. It doesn't mean Bona doesn't have his own exceptional style.
@@MauiBoyTrav Richard Bona said himself that he learned to play jazz by copying Jaco's debut album. That side of him was literally created by Jaco, so as unique as Bona is, he is not ashamed to show where he came from.
This performance was from the appearance of PMG at Austin City Limits (the original venue) in 1992. It was electrifying, I was there, about five rows back. Amazing experience. Amazing lineup pf PMG with new members, Richard, Antonio, and Cuong Vu on trumpet and miscellaneous, for the Speaking of Now tour.
It's great to hear Metheny still playing this tune! His approach to soloing over the chord changes now is vastly different from the original recording yet retains the same "lyrical" quality that he's so amazing at!
@@spanishcastle1234 In Pat's interview with Rick Beato, he says quote" i had only been playing for 5 years when i went to Germany to make Bright Size Life." So you'll have to talk to Pat himself about that correction. If Pat says it, i am inclined to believe it, simply because he's not known as somebody that lies or even exaggerates.
This song from the album of the same name is what brought him to prominence..thou album sales was low..this performance is a testimony to his form that we have vote to know and love.May he as adventurous in his older years as his younger self.Bravo !
Beautiful , beautiful, beautiful, I've died and gone to pat matheny heaven , please come to the UK, nobody comes close, bloody musical genius !!!! Love ya pat and all the other amazing musicians IOr should I say angels that play alongside you , wow!!
I remember back to 1977 and seeing Pat play at Harper Junior College in Palatine Illinois for $10. He was on his Bright Size Life tour and I had been hearing him on the progressive jazz station. WXRT? WJKL? I don't remember any more. But I heard he was going to be there and went. I got front row seats to the general admission show. I have been a fan ever since and have seen him in Austin and LA. Pat has always stood apart from the herd.
I agree with kirjapan............this is a sterling performance.......I always get a sense with Richard Bona that no matter how great he himself plays, there is an underlying overall respect from whence this approach to playing the bass guitar came. Every note is a tribute to the late great Jaco Pastorius.
Those armonics and scales of Bonah are so cool... his playing is so smooth and relaxed, a great lesson for any human being I'd say. The three of them are so very good at being divine entities sharing pieces of heaven with us....
Shawn Lane articulated himself the EXACT same way Pat does. There's something about when you get to that level of mastery, that the craft just takes you over completely. You don't have to look, you don't have to hear, you KNOW exactly what you're doing, because the UNIVERSE is making it happen, with you. So beautiful.
What I'd give to see a tour with that lineup. Fortunately for me I did see that tour, Speaking of Now, and it was stupendous. I could say that was THE highlight but with that incarnation of the Group it was an embarrassment of riches. When I saw them, Bona's gear was not working and Pat vamped a pedal while the techs got it working and then ... BOOM. Brilliant.
@Grillmouth Caspita che tirio!!! Bravo davvero il bassista nell'interpretare il ruolo che fu del mitico Jaco, superflo parlare dello spessore musicale di Metheny e Sanchez!!
In 1976 I was 12 years old when my father brought home this fantastic LP. Later with Lyle since the seventies the opus of PMG become unreachable for me.
@pngilman interesting how small the world is. 1st time seeing holdsworth: w/Bruford (Lupo's down in RI before they moved out of the mall area) back in late 70-something. next: 80's, Harvard Sq. can't remember the venue name; it was below ground level, & maybe 30 people were there. Bruce Bartlett next week at Ryles. Rumors it'll be fusion. Hope he's going to play stuff like "With In". If you haven't heard it, check it on his site. He's got the Holdsworthian volume swell down to a tee.
I especially like how Richard jumps into the beat at 1:59 on my RUclips playback of this video. And then the solo, of course. He's the best in the world. Yes, Victor, Yes, Henrik, Yes all those guys too. Bass is so cool.
@Jonassonribaribo that bass guitar is a Pensa-Suhr. That company no longer exists- both Rudy Pensa and John Suhr went their separate ways and have separate companies now.
@SodThisGiveMeABeer its exclusive to fretless bass, you can try it on a fretted instrument, anyway, you hit the harmonic then slide up the neck (yes, press down onto the fretboard as you slide up, as if you were sliding a fretted note, but hit the harmonic first)
Evergreen……‼ I've just known the tune was strictly composed as a whole , and there's no room for ad-lib for the 1st time. I mean the rhythm section made a great job.
I believe that is a pensa-suhr bass. Mark Knofler played a guitar from same company- no longer in existance- but Suhr guitars and Pensa are still building- just on their own.

Me Too! Exactly! Who knew? It seems to never date.
Thank you Rick Beato for bringing me hear! 🤷🏻♂️❤️🎸

Ditto! And not the first tasting @Rick Beato sent me on.
Ditto
Yes I wouldn't have discovered this without Rick also
Same here...
Metheny has brought so much joy into my Life. Thanks, Pat.
Did he make your life bright sized?
This is an amazing performance. Richard Bona's playing is jaw-dropping.

Uhm.....Can't be 1992. Sanchez wasn't playing with him then. He didn't start playing with Metheny until about 2000-2001.
Its Austin City limits, but This is 2002 Speaking of Now tour
What is it about this music that simply transports me somewhere really nice. It gives me calm and re-energizes me. Thank you.
This takes back to my days in HS. Pat's songs are so much about stirring up incredible feelings, memories, and peace.
Pat's first song basically--I think he was 19 when he wrote it--what a master.
It's great to hear Metheny still playing this tune! His approach to soloing over the chord changes now is vastly different from the original recording yet retains the same "lyrical" quality that he's so amazing at!
Love this version.
Pat had only been playing guitar for 5 years when he wrote and recorded this tune. Let that sink in.
Not correct. He started playing guitar in 1966 at the age of 12. Bright Size Life was recorded in 1976.

Richard Bona is on fire!🔥🔥🔥Such an honour playing with Pat and Antonio. Jaco was Richards inspiration….🙏👍🇬🇧🙏
All three killing it here...
The Metheny trio--Pat, Richard and Antonio, you guys rock! We love you!
Oh man this is one of my very favorite Metheny compositions. I think Bona actually improves on Jaco's original bass lines. SICK rendition!
yes.. and Antonio Sanchez.. plays with such a groove too
Good Jazz never ever gets Old. One of my favorite Guitarist. A true Jazz Innovator
Antonio Sanchez is tearing it up the whole time.

Saw him last night at Ronnie Scotts in Soho,
Amazing, but my being a woman says?
He is autistic?
I told her i can see her point,
then i killed her.
No... just very, very focused.
Sanchez is something else. Great sound and feel.
This is one of the greatest versions of this tune. So enjoyable
Bright Sized Life was the album that got me into Jazz. Great stuff, Bona plays great too.

Fretless?

This is unreal....beautiful ballet.....just awesome
Now... this is something out of this universe... Omg how good they play.
I cant get enough of that returning motive. BAAAA
Amazing playing, and great compositions of music, more than just jazz.
Amazingly beautiful!❤️ the tone of that bass, Bona! All great musicians!💫
Bona is the star of this show, no doubt. so relaxed.
