I’m pretty sure this is the song in my library that has gotten the most plays in total. Either this, or Sweet Pain by Blues Traveller lol. Somewhere over 200 plays for me, and I never get tired of hearing it, so achingly beautiful. Since I don’t see any explanations in the comments, here’s the gist of this song. It is based on a real life encounter John Petrucci and his guitar tech had while touring in Italy. They met the titular Count of Tuscany in town (he’s a real person), and upon learning they were part of a touring band, he offered to give them a tour of his estate and vineyards, which they gladly accepted. Upon arrival at the estate they were introduced to the Count’s brother and were told that he was the inspiration for the character of Hannibal Lector in the books and films (the cannibal curator) and that the duo were consulted heavily for the film Hannibal which takes place largely in the Tuscan countryside. This, of course, freaked out Petrucci and his tech, and as they were led on further into the tour they were told many tales of horror and intrigue from the the Second World War (the soldiers in the wine) and shown the estates private chapel where they proudly displayed the mummified corpse of a saint as a holy relic (the saint behind the alter). Through a series of misunderstandings and miscommunications, Petrucci was in some fear for his life at this point, and asked to cut the tour short and leave, leading to apologies and reassurances of their safety, that the brother was not in fact Hannibal Lecter, but was more a muse to the personality and physicality Anthony Hopkins showed in the movies. They all laughed it out and enjoyed a pleasant evening of wine tasting and stories. A true story of a real life situation, though a bit hyperbolic and over exaggerated, seemed like the perfect companion to this particular piece of music (DT always writes the music first then crafts words and a story to go along with it) and thus one of their magnum opus’ was born.
Wow!!! What a back story. That’s crazy they got to meet him. I’ve heard stories before surrounding him but never DT meeting him that’s amazing. Thank you for the explanation!
@@L33Reacts oh no doubt about it. James was a lot better in his hay day. To be fair, man rupture his vocals so he kinda lost his sound. Oh yea see alot if bands there albums sound a lot alike. Dream theater, albums are so diverse. Also check on terminal velocity has John and Mike in it. Also I feel like the key board is the cherry on top.
One of the best songs ever recorded. Just absolutely brilliant. Even better that it's based on a true story of John Petrucci's meeting with the actual Count of Tuscany. My condolences for your losses, same boat here. They live on in my stories and my memories. Listen to this 100 hundred times again. LaBrie's best performance, the low growls were Portnoy. Keep your memories alive brother, those flashes hang on and build off of them. Overall, 10 napkins😉
One of my favorite bands and this song in particular is an epic masterpiece.

Another great and emotional song is "Sacrified Sons" where they dedicate the song to all the heroes that scarified their lives on 9/11. The live version is magical: ruclips.net/video/-884PYAfoiw/видео.html In this You also get a great drum cam view from time to time.
The live version of Six Degrees from Score is quite the experience. The live symphony on Score adds so much richness to the music that the album version just feels like it's missing. Would be great to see a reaction to that.
@@L33Reacts It's a fun piece because it consists of 8 different movements. I actually recommend against the live version because the orchestra sounds kinda thin and out of tune. absolutely listen to the studio version. it features orchestration too.
That was hell of a napkin!! I mean song! Thanks for the truthful reaction. I really enjoyed it. Since you are game for long songs (I know currently you owe some patreon reactions) but whenever it was time for dream theater, I recommend going for IN THE PRESENCE OF ENEMIES part1&2 together It is a hell of a journey and not that much mainstream amongst RUclipsrs but a very lovely and technical one Cheers mate
OK that's it, when I have time later today, I'm going to your Patreon. Loving your style of reactions. You gotta listen to and see the 2001 Live Scenes From New York - and, as long as I got the finances, I'm gonna help you do it. Since "The Count Of Tuscany" at the end of this reaction got you... in my opinion, that particular live version of Finally Free is the universal heavyweight champion of musical payoffs in the realm of prog concept albums. Looking forward to it.
Saw them last Jan. 20th in Barcelona, it's my 10th or 11th time (lost count). They opened the concert with The Alien (their Grammy-winning song from their last album) and ended it with this frickin' masterpiece. I've seen them perform "Count of Tuscany" live 3 times, and this last time was hands down the best. Petrucci ages like fine wine...
this is such a good song but I always forget about it, I should listen to it more often hahah Last year they played this song live here in Brazil in their first appearance at Rock in Rio, one big festival we have here that has all kinds of music, they ended the night right after Iron Maiden at the same stage and when they started playing Count of Tuscany me and my friend couldn't believe that audacity, I say, of them to play an 19 min long song for such a big crowd whose many never heard of them probably, it was amazing!! If you ever do a full album reaction of them please let it be Metropolis pt 2: Scenes from a Memory, you'll not regret it!! Anyways, sorry the long comment, but I think it very adequate for such a long song ahaha
I always welcome the long comments brother I love talking to you guys! I will definitely one day soon do scenes from a memory pt2 I have it here on the list. Hahah that’s so awesome they played that at the concert. I would die of laughter if people got mad and left. I love the proggyness of a 19 min song 🤯😂
First of all dream theater is my favorite band and I’ve heard all of their songs hundreds of times. I have never and would never pay somebody to play those songs.
When did I complain about the vocals taking too long? I liked that it took so long because his vocals are mid 😂 I’m glad you wouldn’t, makes the people who do even more special and better people :)
It’s a shame what happened to James with the food poisoning incident, and I guess aging in general. I think his raspier side was great on Awake, the song 6:00 has a pretty great vocal performance. Cool drum intro too.
I love the few songs I’ve heard from Rush! Just Tom Sawyer and the other radio hits :) I don’t think I’ve heard those. I’ll definitely add it to the list! 🙏🙏🤘
Mike Portnoy amazes me every time I listen. No one in the world sounds like him. You immediately know its Mike when you hear him. This was one of the "tryout" songs the drummers they invited to the audition had to learn and play with the band. How would you like to be one of the drummers on that tryout list and have to learn that song? Mike Mangini nailed it, but although he is great in his own right, he is still no Mike Portnoy.
I believe the story is an actual account experienced by John Petrucci. You'll have to research it because it's too much to relate here in the comments section.
Napkiiiin! 🕺🏻 Love this song bro!! I actually made a full (drum) transcription for this back in the day, I was in uni and learning this song, so I thought I’d make a drum transcription for it too 😂 You’re a drummer, right?? 🤔
Yeah I’ve played since I was a kid! I also played a bunch of other instruments as a kid and teenager. But sadly since I moved I haven’t had my kit with me it’s back at my moms house. I’ve been having issues with housing and it sucks but hopefully it will work out. Thank you for watching bro!
Dream Theater is certainly not on my normal playlist, but I do enjoy their work. I have several of their songs on my 'listen to every so often' list, but I had not actually heard this one before. I loved the musical side and composition, but frankly the story in the lyrics did little for me, although the vocals were excellent as usual. Keep rocking

Yet another of my favorite bands that I've seen 11 times in Sweden. Had the fortune of meeting James Labrie and John Petrucci on a special Meet and Greet on the album promotion for "Dream Theater" released in September 2013. We met the guys in Stockholm (my youngest son and me) in Agust 2013 and we got to listen to the full album before it was released and had som chat time with the guys and of course a photo shoot. Looking forward to Your reaction on this one. As I love Mike Portnoys work on DT's material (I like Magnini as well) You might want to take a look at the isolated drum session on the same song with Portnoy: ruclips.net/video/FWStN_ndNvA/видео.html
That is so awesome you got to hang with them! I’m jealous as hell. It seems like you have met a lot of bands, that is so cool bro!

@@L33Reacts I've hade the fortune of working on some events in my hometown (Getaway Rock Festival and Gefle Metal Festival) during a lot of years. The growling vocals on all of the final few DT records with Mike Portnoy are DONE by Portnoy!!! Fans didn't much care for it, as it wasn't what the band is known for. Cool reaction, though!!! Life long DT fan!
Oh wow that's crazy... I had no idea! I will keep that in mind for my next DT reactions. I love Portnoy so that's awesome. Even though I didn't care for them much either... lol. Thank you for watching! I appreciate it.

It's one of their best songs. Just wait until you listen to Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence...the whole 42 minutes of it!! It's truly beyond epic.
