  • Merry Christmas everyone! Welcome to our first annual Dream Theater Christmas special!
I thought it would be a cool tradition to do a certain band for certain holidays. So I gave Opeth, Halloween (which was an amazing choice lol) and I am choosing Dream Theater for Christmas. And wow what a track!
This was a donation from subscriber Adamack Beats! Thank you so much for supporting the channel AND picking such a great song! Merry Christmas Adamack!
Now to the track…. Wow. That’s all I have to say. Just an absolute tour de force of a song that had over 12 MINUTES OF BUILD UP…. Absolutely crazy choice to make for a 24 minute song and wow does it absolutely blow you away or what? When it starts to pick up towards the end…. WOW. Just WOW. These guys are on the Mt.Rushmore of prog…. Hands down.

Man this jingle is probably my favorite song of all time, at least the best crafted one IMO. Glad to see you had fun with it! BTW the last piano note is in F, which is what the first note of the album also is. It's all about stories ending where they begin, there are legit too many easter eggs in this song and album to fit in one comment. Like all the songs on the album are in different keys, first F, then G, A, B, C, D, E and then this song back in F again. It's truly a masterpiece!

Octavarium is indeed a concept album but it's not one that tells a story like a Rock Opera, but rather it's conceptual in its composition. Each of the 8 songs is built differently, the most notable differences being the 8 notes in an octave. The first track The Root Of All Evil is in the key of F, then the 2nd is G, 3rd is A, 4th is B, et cetera until it comes back to Octavarium, the last track, which is in F again. It comes full circle, which is very much the theme of the album, that everything comes full circle.
Another notable difference is the uses of time signatures and other related timing elements. The Root Of All Evil, track 1, begins with a single prolonging note (the ending of Octavarium is referencing the beginning of track 1), The Answer Lies Within, track 2, uses single-note intervals in the piano, trading between 2 notes, These Walls, track 3, is in 3/4 time, I Walk Beside You, track 4, utilises the Perfect 4th interval for a very Poppy love song feel, Panic Attack, track 5, is in 5/4 for most of the first verse, Never Enough, track 6, is just 6 minutes long (excluding the interlude and extended fade), Sacrificed Sons, track 7, has meters in 7/8 and 7/4 throughout, and Octavarium, track 8, of course meets back on the octave and pretty much means 8.
Along with this, the artwork for the album is very much riddled with 8's and 5's (referencing the 8 white notes and 5 black notes in a piano octave) and even the band at this point had 8 albums and 5 members (8 overall members who've appeared on studio albums, including former keyboardists Kevin Moore & Derek Sherinian, and former vocalist Charlie Dominici). The gatefolded album cover organises the birds and the newton's cradle in a piano white/black key order. This was their 8th studio album and they had 5 additional live albums before this too.
One last thing I'll mention is something called Dream Theater's Meta Album. This is pretty much 4 Dream Theater albums that were all connected by the first and last notes of each. This started with Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From A Memory in 1999 which ends with static on a record player. That static begins their 6th album, Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence (which had 6 six full songs on two discs, the first disc having 5 and the second having the 40+ minute title track which had 8 parts), and that album ends with a big keyboard chord that fades out, and fades back in on their 7th studio album Train Of Thought (which has 7 songs). That album ends with a single note played on the piano (by Jordan Rudess' nose in fact) and that is the same note that begins their 8th album Octavarium (which, you guessed it, has 8 songs). Octavarium ends the metal album by simply repeating the intro to the first track of Octavarium, rather than what I would have suggested, being the clock ticking from the beginning of Metropolis Pt 2, but still wonderful nonetheless!

  • @felipescFEC
    @felipescFEC Год назад +3

Octavarium (album) isn't conceptual, but Octavarium (music) kinda is.
The "story" can be about the quest of Dream Theater (and other bands) to produce their original songs, trying to escape from musical references (the first 3 intervals are about this) but ending up finding even themselves as an inspiration to make music (4th interval) and, eventually, giving up on "true originality" and embracing again their musical idols and roots (5th interval).
As this band likes to do, this song has no "real meaning", it can be about the cicle of our daily lives (hence the 24 minutes lenght), about society being cyclical as a whole, etc... But one thing that is true is that the story is about cycles (and is one as well).

Jingle (hit that bell icon 😂). I loooooove this song man, I’m so glad to see people reacting to this song after all these years 🤩🥹 I was reading through the comments a little and totally forgot that each song is ascending in key and returning to F for this song, but I recognised that very, very last part of the song as the start of the first, ‘The Root of All Evil’, and then heard the riff from that song - I’m playing this entire album again now because I fuckin’ LOVE it haha!!! Also, thank you for saying about the ASMR bit lmfao - it shows I’m not the only one that’s been having those thoughts for like 15+ years 😂😂😂👌🏼

Lmao this little jingle is one of my favorite DT songs, so seeing someone else enjoy it as much I do is always a good reaction. Also, not sure if anyone mentioned it (sorry if they did) but that lyric passage in Intervals are references to the rest of the longs on the album, all starting with Mike Portnoy counting down to the 8th, the octave, hence the Octavariun

4:00 that’s not a guitar at all, it’s the keyboard player using a continuum keypad, basically a touch activated pressure sensitive surface laid out like a keyboard. Basically it is to keyboards what a slide guitar is to guitars.
6:00 you seem like a low-brass type of guy to me. I’m guessing… trombone. (I was a french horn player, and I always hung out with the low brass guys :p )
20:00 jingle all the way, baby!
21:00 don’t feel too bad. This song takes multiple listens through and some research to even get the basics of what they’re doing and what it’s about. I can’t really pretend to understand it much myself because it goes so far beyond my understanding of music theory that I feel like a child trying to understand quantum cosmology. You could literally write college level research papers on this song, there’s so much going on, and still find new and interesting things each time you listen to it.

That last note you heard is very a crazy concept that they did with this album. It all boils down to eight. It’s the eighth studio album. Octavarium is the eighth song on the album. Every song has a specific no into it. It’s really crazy. You have to look it up on Wikipedia to get the explanation.

This is the final album in Dream Theater's "meta album" that began with Scenes from a Memory. For each album in the cycle the final note/sound of one was the same as the first note/sound in the next. This being the final one, and also the band's 8th studio album, they decided to have the final note you hear instead be the same note as the first note of this record. Which is really cool, because actually this whole track has a lot of musical references to each of the other seven tracks on the record.

Each of the five songs come from a different one of their records, and the final track in that - The Shattered Fortress - also has call backs to all of the previous tracks that comprise it. Enjoy!
