I think the vocals are great. Keep in mind he's narrating several characters both male and female. That's why he sounds like he's all over the place.

@@L33Reacts think once you follow the story you might appreciate his stylistic approach. Are you aware that he suffered food poisoning back in 1994 which ruptured his vocal chords? Try listening to his singing before then on the Images and Words album. His singing may sound more crisp and less grating. It's either you love or hate his vocals. I don't see anyone else singing for Dream Theater. He's been doing it for over 30 years. I feel he's an absolute beast of a singer hanging in there and not caring about what haters think. 😊

I love how the "overture" is exactly like overtures in classical music, showing kind of a medley of what's coming in the following songs, to "prepare the audience". This entire album is a masterpiece of intertwining melodies and reprises. Yes, Portnoy is the drummer in this studio version and I think he's doing some of the backing vocals too (together with Petrucci if I'm not mistaken)..

Oh, it's #1 in my heart, and always will be. I know a lot of fans will put "Images & Words" in that spot, but I think this is better, mainly because it's more compositionally-mature. Images & Words is a technical masterpiece, but from a songwriting perspective, you can tell that they were trying to make complicated metal music with lots of changes that they made no effort to disguise. But as they grew as a band, they grew as songwriters, and began to use their technical abilities in order to serve the song's lyrics and story, rather than distract from them. It's still complicated music (see: _The Dance of Eternity_ ), but it's WELL-WRITTEN complicated music. And when complexity is not required, it's not used (I mean, c'mon, _The Spirit Carries On_ is a Dream Theater classic for a reason, and it's in 3/4 time with a simple chord progression and a guitar solo that I can actually mostly play...and I'm not an amazing guitarist by any stretch of the imagination). This is the album (for me at least) where Dream Theater became my favourite band (a position they occupied up until roughly "Systematic Chaos", when I noticed that they were starting to run out of ideas, and instead of re-discovering their creativity, they were starting to again rely on insane technical feats, but this time in order to try and hide the fact that they had nothing to say anymore). I was done when Portnoy left the band, and I haven't looked back. I really wish they'd taken him up on his "hiatus" idea and just...gone and done their own thing for a year or two, because I think if they had, they would have come back together and started making incredible music once again. Perhaps they'd even still be relevant to the prog metal scene today, instead of being a relic of the past. Oh well...such is life. Nobody recognizes the mistakes they're making WHEN they're making them.

Regarding the story. It is a concept album that deals with the story of a man named Nicholas and the discovery of his past life, which involves love, murder, and infidelity as Victoria Page.

This is what I used to consider as "middle" dream Theater, but nowadays you can almost still say early - 1999.
When it comes to DT I only like their really old classic Images&Words (1992) - were the vocals are imo much better - and some few selected Songs of all their stuff after that, "Home" beeing the one on this album.

Thanks for your honest reaction, I really do appreciate it. I will say that you are correct that there are a lot of people that for some reason do not like Labrie's vocals and I am not one who has ever had a problem with them. I am a fan and have seen the band at least 10 to 12 times over the years and only remember one concert that I was a bit disappointed in (they played well but just seemed to be not in a good mood). I am never sure what vocal styling dissenters are looking for, so it remains a mystery to me what others yearn to hear instead.

This album is 1999. Mike Portnoy didn't leave until 2010. But, it was the first album with Jordan Rudess.
James LaBrie has said that, after the food poisoning incident in 1994 that ruptured his vocal chords, he didn't feel normal again vocally until at least 2002.
He did an interview ,with Elizabeth at The Charismatic Voice channel, a little over a year ago that he discusses this ,among other things.

Bless you, thank you for not holding back! I originally found Dream Theater through the instrumental version of Black Clouds And Silver Linings, but they cut the solos from A Nightmare To Remember and The Shattered Fortress so I ended up listening to the vocals... And it grew on me - I just couldn't stop listening to their studio albums and when I found the live performance of this one and there was no turning back. The instrumentals, the solos, the vocals and lyrics are just amazing. I actually like LaBrie's voice most of the time now, for the studio albums and all but the most recent live concert release(s?).
I think I can agree with the people who say that James LaBrie is the best singer FOR the band. He gets along with everyone, and was the lyricist for their "Grammy song", The Alien, after all. I went to see them in Toronto during their Distant Memories tour - it might have been the mood of the concert overtaking me, but his vocals sounded great... then I listened to the recordings from London that were the official live version and the vocals (heavily mastered) really let me down. Basically, yeah, I totally get it.

this is such a great album. I listen to the live version from NYC only. It is so much better than the studio version IMO. But I am a big live music fan when bands do it well. Just so much more real and raw. Sometimes prog (studio versions) can be so sterile sounding. Again, just my opinion.

Hi L33, I'm one of those who also is a bit confused about the singing quality part of the time. He mixes his performance live. I've attended shows where he has performed top notch and some less good.
I sometimes would dream of having one of my favourite singers, Jeff Scott Soto, on vocals. Mike Portnoy has had the same idea (my interpretation) as he summoned the great band Sons of Apollo with JSS on vocals.

Haven't listened to enough Gojira or Porcupine Tree to really have a strong impression yet. James Labrie is good, but Russel Allen blows him away. And I just enjoy the harder sound of Opeth.
