- This was just great. So much fun to be had listening to this jam. Nonstop riffs and chugs, soaring solos, and pounding drumming. Also the lyrics are pretty dope too. I think I’m officially a Dream Theater fan.

Not sure if anyone mentioned it in the other video but this is song #1 in their "Twelve Step Suite" which consists of 5 songs across 5 different albums. The lyrics to each song, written by the band's then-drummer Mike Portnoy, deal with his experience of alcoholism. Each song represents a certain number of the Twelve Steps. The Suite is a great way to get introduced to the band as all the songs have a different tone so I'd definitely recommend checking out the other songs in the suite since this is the first song and it covered steps 1-3. The other songs in order are:
"This Dying Soul" - steps 4 and 5
"The Root of All Evil" - steps 6 and 7
"Repentance" - steps 8 and 9
"The Shattered Fortress" - steps 10-12

Mike Portnoy was the drummer from the beginning of the band until their 2009 album when he left the band. The drummer from 2009 onward has been Mike Mangini

At 12:14 the guitarist and keyboardist do a SICK unison part. Very few bands do guitar/keyboard unison like John Petrucci and Jordan Rudess.

I wasn’t a fan of the vocals in the middle of the song that was almost like a group chant or whatever but the rest I really enjoy

great reaction man, I agree with you about the vocals in this band, there are songs that fits very well and other that I don't like it very much, but regardless DT is a fantastic band!
If you're going to do a full album I once again highly recommend Scenes from a Memory, the way the songs connect to each other and the story telling throughout it is phenomenal! For sure one of the bests albums of all time for me \m/
I liked them on pull me under but some of the vocals towards the middle of this song were a little meh… but the instrumentals more then made up for it. Absolute master class by DT 🤘
These guys have been crushing it since the early 90's, but formed in 1985. They are old enough to be BTBAM's parents.
This entire song is only part one of the Alcoholics Anonymous suite. Part two is This Dying Soul from the Train of Thought album. This song will also blow your mind. Part three is The Root of All Evil from Octavarium, part four is Repentance from Systematic Chaos, and part five is The Shattered Fortress from Black Clouds and Silver Linings. Dream Theater has been blowing my mind for 30 years and they still keep pushing musical boundaries to this day. This whole AA suite has to do with Mike Portnoy's (ex-Dream Theater drummer) struggle with alcoholism.
As a recovering addict myself I really liked the “AAisms” in the lyrics. The opening line is straight out of the AA book hahaha

speaking of Between the Burried and Me, I saw them open for Dream Theater and it was pretty awesome.
They definitely took a lot of inspiration from DT! You can hear it in this song and Pull Me Under. My new favorite hobby is finding my favorite bands, favorite bands. And so far it’s been great 😂🤘
Best musicians together and individually EVER! Every one of them. At their peak here, but still amazing today.

Im sure its been mentioned but the makeup is a drummer, keyboardist, bassist and just one guitarist. He records his rhythms and then live goes from rhythms and solos. The keyboardist does also double as the other soloist you hear. So whenever you think you hear two guitar solos its actually the guitarist and the keyboardist going at it
Ahhhhh so he has a backtrack and switches from lead to rhythms as the song needs. That’s dope! The riffs in this song are absolute gold. 🤘🤘🤘
