    The Count of Tuscany brought tears to most of us who have had the pleasure of listening to it live.... For me it was really good, although it's a mixture between light and dark but the power and energy being put together is overwhelming......
    I put this beautiful song into my DT top's epics 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼

      Heretic, demon heart, bleed for us... 😆
      Octavarium was my first T and prog album I heard, and it changed the game for me forever. I so much disagree that it's just a bunch of time signatures, I still think it's their least shreddy, most intentional and atmospheric album. (Maybe Fall into Infinity is more at ease but not intentional at all). Octavarium is absolutely beautiful

    Yes, Black Clouds & Silver Linings was the last album Portnoy played on before his return. I think Portnoy also participated in writing songs on their next album (A Dramatic Turn of Events) but never performed them on tour with the band (or in the studio for that matter, it was all Mangini).

    Thanks for the reaction - I enjoyed hearing your perspective. I was also surprised at the score. I can't really relate to the dislike of Octavarium. The title song is such a tribute their most important musical influences and has so many easter eggs for the fans (as does the whole album) - and I just really dig it.

      The real question is, what the new Portnoy album brings us? I feel like it be either their shreddiest or most heartfelt album to date

    When you mentioned before the review that there were some lows in the song, I didn't expect anything highter then a 7... but then I got slapped in the face with that 9.3.

    To be fair, Train of Thoughts is a very bleak album. It's one of my favorites, but i definitely need the mood for it. The Count of Tuscany is one of my favorite songs of all time. Even cooler is It's a true story. And no, you're not the first. But i love ya anyways.
    Edit, I think it's one of Labrie's best songs. It's very awesome live

    "Never been a fan of this" :( ahh, thats my fav part, (not when i drive), but when that part comes, i close my eyes, and drift away from the world, drift away from my probloms, i love it. Also, little fun fact, i did ketamin treatment last year, and one of the treatment, this part came in my head when i was flowing, that is the most relaxed moment i had in my whole 33years of life

    James was at his best in the 2000s. Yes he could take higher notes and add more grit in the 90s; I couldn't care less. From Mullmuzzler 1 to that album was his prime - mature, musical yet powerful execution.
    I didn't really dig DT's post-Portnoy era - and James' solo work as well - but we'll see what they bring to the table with their new album.
    James is underrated painfully, respect to James
    PS: oh, and the swell section- I don't dig it in itself either, but it's critical for composition. It gave enough space to breathe between the two sections, and laid ground for section 2's leitmotif.
    Still could be like 20 seconds shorter lol

  • @WillWindWonder
    @WillWindWonder 19 дней назад

    The instrumental section is not free form without tempo and meter. They play it with the guitar and keys synchronized, and when they do it live it sounds like the record. Your challenge is to listen to it enough to find the beats 😛.

    Imo once Portnoy left (the heart of DT), it felt like their music were more about pushing boundaries of music instead of making something that was progressive, but also made sense musically, so super excited about Portnoy's return and hoping they comeback to the way it was before, less progressive because we can and more solid musically.

    While I think Octavarium (the album) is overrated, it’s actually received as one of their best aside for the absolute classics (Scenes, Images, Awake). I REALLY think you should go back and listen to at least the title track. It’s one of the greatest prog epics ever written, and maybe their most beloved track.

    • @dv1860
      @dv1860 Месяц назад

      Although imo Octavarium is the best song ever made, I think DH's criticism of the album is mainly due to this song because the rest of the albim is much less complex and we can even say with more focus on songwriting compared to most of their material. That's why I find it very strange that he stopped listening to the band for the mentioned reasons.

    I've watched live versions of this where the audience is really into it. There's just something about it that resonates with emotion, especially in the last segment. I'll also agree with Scenes from a Memory being a top 5 album of all time. The first time I heard it, it literally made me want to quit my job and focus on something creative. They've had some good albums post-Portnoy on this album (Black Clouds and Silver Linings), particularly the eponymous one and Distance Over Time, which I think is their best work in a long time. It'll be interesting to hear the next album with the return of Portnoy on drums.

      @@maisiano they played it as an encore in their last tour (I saw them last in Jan 2023). I have tickets for their upcoming visit to Madrid (Nov 17th) but their setlist, which is back in Portnoy's hands, for this new tour is still a mystery.

    You know, umm, score was super generous here. Truth be told, given how much of a fan I am of their epics, this was a let down on first listen. Your reaction here is my first listen of this in a very long time, and I grew on me a ton. Probably still more of a 7.8-8.2, but as usual I appreciated your analysis.

    I agree with 6/8 and not 12/8. Mike was putting the snare on 4 which seemed to me to make the 1 after 6, and flows better counting as well.
