This job was brutal. This dude makes it look easy and I’m mad about it. Watch this video a couple times before starting and you’ll be pretty well prepared. To mark the holes for the controls I actually put everything on the bike with e-tape where the pins on the controls would go. When I lined everything up where I wanted and righted it down the pins marked the e-tape and that’s where I drilled. Worked pretty well
This is one of the best tutorials I have seen. Honestly could have done without the music but aside from that stellar job with wonderful attention to detail.
Like the install. I wanted black bars as well, for my white 2017 FZ09. I would have went with the protapers, but the cost was more than I wanted to pay. I would have powder coated too, but due to time, I just took mine off and painted. After, I wished I'd powder coated.
Yep, that's what I did on my old SV650, but watching this again I've noticed that the MT09 has a notch and pin so for that reason, you will have to loosen the assembly enough so that it could be removed.
That was the best bar change tutorial I've seen yet. Now I know I can do this myself. Question for you though, what made you choose the evo over the contour?
Thanks! As for the difference, I've heard that the EVO is their top of the line bar and helps absorb vibrations better. I haven't tried the Contour so this is only hearsay. Ride safe and let me know if you have any questions when you do yours.
@@MotoSouth Thanks for the clarification. Whats the difference in riding position for you? I'm 6'2 and find the stock bars to be very upright. I wouldn't mind something with a little more of a forward lean on it.
apa khabar from malaysia. i love how u always try to prevent scratching by adding tapes or cloth. on top of that u always clean every single parts with alcohol👍
First of thank you for that great tutorial video on the install. But, can I avoid the hustle of threading the ends by just buying some 7/8 bar end mirrors and not use the stock bar ends?
18:32 my dealership broke the first one, and they don’t want to tighten the other one because they are worried about it breaking again. I went into the shop and stretched it open.
Best handle bar installation video so far, is the new bar still wider than the stock after you cut it? I'm thinking about upgrading mine to pro tapper also.
It is still a little wider. Originally I was concerned with adding any extra width but now that they are on, I absolutely love it. Go for it, you won't regret it. Ride safe.
Be good if Pro Taper made model specific bars. As is, this installation is way beyond most of us. It's the most labor intensive bar installation I have ever seen. The only thing you didn't do was bend the tubing.
I'm ready to change my stock bars to an LSL X00 tapered handlebar which is very similar to the one by Protaper shown here. In this video, I've noticed that the rubber grips were fitted flush to the handlebar ends. In the OEM bars, the rubber grips sit about 15mm proud from the metal bar tube. 02:34 This is so the bar weights have 15mm embedded into the rubber. Motosouth has opted to go for bar end mirrors and so used that 15mm part to attach his bar end mirrors. Motosouth; Would you like to comment and clarify this?
Here’s how it is now flush mounted 26:58 and here 02:36 is how it was originally. I’m truly baffled how you ended fitting them like this. Since you had measured and drilled the positioning holes exactly as the stock bars then you should have ended up with rubber grips proud as stock.
I had to pull it back outwards the required distance. When I slid it on while filming I went too far. I realized it when I went to mount the controls. Good eye 😂
Great video! Would you say the lower bar made the front wheel feel more planted to the road when accelerating hard or leaning in the twisties? Or is the feeling only marginally improved?
Great video for a street novice "mechanic". what bar bend would you recommend that closest comes t the stock bend? I don't want a lean. I looked at pro tapers information. It looked like windhams bend was the highest unless you went into the evo adventure- adventure high bars.
Number one reason I went with them was for the look of the black bars. They do make turn in and steering better though. Also a slightly more comfortable riding position
Thanks for the detailed instructions! I was wondering how the "Protaper" logos were applied: are they decals/stickers that can be removed, or painted on there? That's only thing I would do in addition to what you did.
They are printed on somehow. I left them on for now since they kind of match my color scheme but they can be removed with a little brake cleaner on a rag. At least that's what I've heard.
It's not a drastic difference. It leans you forward just a little. Makes the bike feel even more agile. I'd say it's probably my favorite upgrade so far.
how come you have ended up with the bar flush with the grip on the clutch side? its supposed to be recessed 15mm to allow for the sleeve of the bar end or your spacer...they were recessed when you started
The best vídeo! Do you recommend Carmichael or Pastrana handlebar? I think that Pastrana model is lower, but i'm not sure if it could be used in this bike.
I went with Carmichael because it’s what a lot of guys recommended. Something a little lower shouldn’t be an issue and may feel even better. Just don’t forget to compare the forward position as well. Some bars are more straight, which could make them feel even lower.
Are these 1-1/8” or 7/8”? I have asked so many ppl and I swear it’s a 50/50 split if these will fit a stock 2016 fz09, without an adapter/aftermarket clamps!?!? Not even the websites seem to be able to answer..
They are tapered bars. The clamp area is 1-1/8” and they taper down to a 7/8” to accommodate standard grips and throttle tubes found on 99% of all bikes. They do not require any adapters to mount in place of your stock bars. 👍
Sorry but I don't remember the sizes. There are two different sizes needed but any standard set should have what you need. Just use the size closest to the size of the nub on the controls and you'll be fine.

Doing this mod soon. Why did you pick 5/8" as the amount to cut off instead of cutting them to the same width as the stock bars? Does trimming them to stock width not leave enough room before the bend for the brake/clutch/switches to be attached?
@@MotoSouth I put the bars on before cutting them. Then I put the brake master cylinder on as far as it would go before it got to the curve and marked where the locating dowel would be. I measured the stock bar from the locating hole for the brake master cylinder to the end of the bar and transfered that measurement to the ProTaper bar.
