  • #DragonBall has for a long time been a champion for Goku being the best good guy in the history of anime or popular media...however, we believe there may be a darker side to him which makes him all the more complicated; and that stems from #DragonBallSuper - regardless of the writing in that show, #Goku has changed and revealed some stuff about him which raises questions about his true character.

    His distant, antisocial nature may not be due entirely to his Saiyan heritage. After all, he was raised by a hermit, and then lived completely alone for an unspecified time during his formative years. It's very likely that this had a greater impact on his aloofness than his heritage. That being said, we've seen Bardock, so it isn't COMPLETELY upbringing, but even Bardock was aware of social cues, and Vegeta, who actually knows what Saiyans are generally like, still finds Goku's behavior to be an abnormal level of sociopathy.

    • @LupineShadowOmega
      @LupineShadowOmega 4 года назад +47

      I'm glad somebody said it. Vegeta's presence and actions paint a counter point to Goku and its a big one.

    • @Bonzothefifth
      @Bonzothefifth 4 года назад +42

      Keep in mind though, that Vegeta is also a bit of an exception due to his Royal background. He had to adhere to a different standard than the ‘Average Saiyan Warrior’. Bardock (and to a lesser extent, Nappa) are probably more indicative of ‘typical’ Saiyan behavior.
      That said, you’re right that they do at least seem more emotionally self aware and complete than Goku, who’s never really been in a position where self reflection/introspection has been necessary. He’s never really faced any social or emotional repercussions for his actions aside from the occasional backtalk or momentary rebuke. This is a case where the Dragon Teams fawning over Goku actually does him a great disservice by allowing him to buy into his own hype over the years to the point that it’s become part of his identity now. You can almost say that this is much like the ‘What if Goku Defeated Roshi’ series, just with a much later starting point.
      In this way, it’s easy to see why Vegeta has become a much more complete character since he’s faced constant adversity and several crushing defeats even when he surpasses his own limits physically and emotionally. Goku could use more of that these days, something that really hasn’t been seen since Raditz (and later Vegeta) beat him down so badly that he actually had to accept help.

      @@Bonzothefifth Yeah, whoever's in charge of Super needs to remember that there's a Dragon TEAM, not just Goku. I mean, at least in tournament arcs, I get it, that's harder to do, but more group fights would be ideal.

    • @DSan-kl2yc
      @DSan-kl2yc 4 года назад +12

      This is a good point but you're off by implying a label to it. Goku isn't a sociopath. He's not even antisocial(in the disruptive sense). He's just odd. He still cares for people deeply. He still cares for his family. He cares about his companions even when not getting anything from them ect.

    • @ninmastnunyabiz9404
      @ninmastnunyabiz9404 4 года назад +35

      @@DSan-kl2yc A sociopath is a term used to describe someone who has antisocial personality disorder (ASPD). People with ASPD can't understand others' feelings. They'll often break rules or make impulsive decisions without feeling guilty for the harm they cause.
      Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that Goku is, like, Jack the Ripper or something (or Frieza, for an in-universe example), only that the very issue in question here is an inability on Goku's part to understand what the others are going through or the full impact of his actions on them. It's not that he doesn't care, it's that he doesn't understand. Which is also why he doesn't feel guilty. He doesn't realize that what he's done is wrong in the first place because it makes perfect sense to him.

    The best thing about this video is realizing something.... Goku is a good guy, but even he has flaws. He doesn't notice his flaws because everyone forgives his flaws because he's such a good guy. Prehaps Goku could work on these flaws if anyone brought it up to him more, but no one ever does. In a way... while Goku trains his body... he doesn't 'train' himself to be a better person because no one challenges him too.

    I feel that the point about him not sharing moves was a little off.
    There’s a difference between knowing how to do something and teaching someone how to do that same thing.
    Goku teaches everyone he can how to become a Super Saiyan and the Kamehameha, techniques that he learned without the help of a teacher.
    All of the other techniques were taught to him, and maybe because of that, he may not be able to express how the technique works in a teachable manner.
    It might also be that those other moves took literally months to learn from their respective masters and he doesn’t have the attention span to dedicate what would be much longer time to pass down those techniques

      I think a problem with that is the series refuses to ever force him to deal with the consequences in any serious way, the closest we ever got was the cell saga who was born as a direct result of Gokus actions against the Red Ribbon Army and even then all of that was reversed by the Buu saga. Even the universe tournament arc started off as HIS FAULT (remember Gohans horrified reaction to what his father did by requesting Xeno to do a tournament?) only for the writers to insert a line later about how "oh the universes were gonna be destroyed anyway, so in a round about way he actually saved everyone by giving everyone a fighting chance!". I've come to terms with the fact that Dragonball will never be a place for these sorts of more serious takes and while I do feel that it's for the better (a ultra serious take on Dragonball is not what anyone needs) the fact that every single series focusses on Goku opens more oppurtunities to show just how flawed he is without consequence when for many parts of the world he was a heroic figure rather than the insatiably battle hungry character he is.

    That also explains his most “combative” (as well as probably his most enduring) relationship: Vegeta. Every interaction between the two is a combat of some kind or another. Hell, Vegeta never even refers to Goku by his name, maintaining to this day to only refer to him as Kakarot. TFS really got this aspect of their ‘best buddy’ relationship.
    In a lot of ways, I feel like Vegeta approaches their relationship in the same way (though he more explicitly acknowledges it as a rivalry).

      Now that you mention it, after watching this video it makes even more sense that TFS Goku constantly calls Vegeta "best buddy" - he may in fact truly believe so (it also explains why Goku lost interest in relationship with Yamcha, Tien, Piccolo, etc.)

      @Bonzothefifth 4 года назад +5

      xGSUltiSpiritx True, but you do see him interacting with them less and less over time. And certainly with a different kind of enthusiasm than he exhibits with Vegeta. Though even that fades a bit one you start seeing characters like Hit and Jiren enter the story-another plot effect that TFS nailed in their Super short comparing Goku’s attitude towards Hit as an act of adultery towards Vegeta.
      None of this is to say that he doesn’t care about them anymore or has actively discarded the others from his life, or even become less emotionally attached, but their ‘closeness’ to him (and consequently their relevance to the plot) has always been directly related to their ability to give him a good fight.

    • @mylightobscures
      @mylightobscures 4 года назад +5

      I'm not sure I completely agree
      Yeah, he's always excited to meet new people, particularly strong fighters but I wouldn't say he loses interest in his friends, or grows apart from them; he just keeps gaining interest in an expanding roster of characters introduced to him
      Goku is constantly training and trying to push his limits.. makes sense that, to do so, he needs ever stronger opponents to face and is eager to do so
      I understand the joke TFS made treating every new 'rival' as an ex-love interest and it's not really wrong but... it's not like he's not open to sparring his old friends (like Yamcha, Krillin, Tien, even Piccolo).. it's more like they don't want to (rightfully so since they don't stand much of a chance/pose much of a challenge)--- which I think kinda leads into another discussion (which questions why the Z Fighters allow themselves to stay relatively week when they could be capable of more if they were willing to try) but I'll get back on track
      In Super, Goku's had the chance to spar with Krillin twice and it's not like he didn't enjoy it (the second time anyways, the first time kinda was part of the arc to encourage Krillin's training again); nor is that the end of their relationship
      Unlike in Z, where there were constant threats and situations preventing such interactions, and DB, where Goku was on a global adventure for the Dragon Balls and training, DBS has provided alot of slice of life content where we see the Z Fighters' daily lives
      When u think of the 5 ish years Goku spent alone with Chichi between the end of DB and the start of Z, and other instances like that where it seems Goku is off doing his own thing and doesn't visit or communicate with his friends, I feel like ppl forget it's a two-way street: these characters can literally travel the world easily and yet it was Goku who made the first move to find his friends again and introduce them to his son
      However, in Super, we often see the characters visit each other
      If anything, I think the fault (maybe a bit aggressive of a term but I mean the cause/reason) lied/lies with the ppl writing the stories of DB for not showing more of Goku interacting with friends and family just cuz they are friends and family-- not in relation to his life-long journey of training-- but then again, would it be interesting to watch? Maybe, since the slice of life episodes in Super typically had a little plot of their own and interesting moments
      There is one last thing I want to touch on to conclude this reply: the life-long journey of training I mentioned in the last paragraph
      Goku isn't that friend who's like "oh yeah I'm on a new diet and I go to the gym 3 times a week"; his life is the diet and the world is his gym
      Training takes dedication, and Goku is clearly committed and enjoys it
      Just cuz now he can stay home in DBS semi-permanently until he dies again doesn't mean he still isn't on that personal journey that once took him all over the world, and even through planes of existence
      And just cuz he'd rather train than do farm work or whatever doesn't mean he's bad at family life, the Son family literally doesn't really need to do anything (they know Bulma and Mr.Satan)

They always say they want to train at their own pace, which isn't a bad thing. The only ones who have trained with Goku are Piccolo or anyone with saiyan blood (for the most part).
    This also apply's to Goku's social life. Though Goku could tone down on the training just a bit to be more social, his friends don't seem to go out of their way to do his hobby either! Nor do they seem to visit him! It's a two way street, yet Goku get's all the flak!

      I mean, there really was nothing wrong with him meeting Zamasu
      His triggers were mostly related to Gowasu's carelessness-- the reason he believes he has the right to act the way he does (in his mind, not only are the mortals to blame, but also the gods who watch over them-- I'm pretty sure he mentions it both when justifying his use of Goku's body and also when fusing with said body)
      I feel like things would have been different if Gowasu had shown Zamasu a planet where savage life fully realized a mostly peaceful and prosperous: like U7's Earth (despite not being perfect and also probably housing issues that would trigger Zamasu)
      Or if Gowasu had just told Zamasu of all the things Goku accomplished for his world (although, now that I think about it he did wish on the super Dragon Balls to learn of everything about Goku so.. I feel like he should've known... or maybe it wouldn't have mattered?)

    I agree with many of your points; I think there's a lot about Goku that is misinterpreted, even by production staff. Goku is self-centered, and often dissociates from those he comes into contact with. After a loss, like losing Grandpa Gohan(without warning,) anyone in his shoes would suffer psychologically. You don't want to be left alone, but you can't allow yourself to become too attached to those around you, in order to avoid further pain. Time and time again, Goku has suffered losses that pushed him further away from others. These contradictory beliefs would drive him further into the dark, if he didn't have a companion who was capable of overcoming the same challenges he faces. He found that in Vegeta, but with all things, development takes time and effort. That's why he was so devastated when Vegeta turned Majin against him. All of his work being for nothing? That would break my heart.

    It makes why Goku doesn’t teach his friends his techniques, or the majority of his techniques. You could say that since Goku learned the majority of his skills from others, Goku can just tell whomever to go train with his previous masters. But, you could also say that Goku does not want another form of himself running around. That’s probably why he didn’t want to train Pan: she was too young and impressionable. She would have the mindset of becoming strong just like Goku. If Goku fought another form of himself after he trained them, he would get bored since he knows every trick they would about to do, since that’s what Goku himself would have done.

He's good to his friends and loved ones, and if he comes across someone in need of help he'll usually try to help out, but he doesn't go out of his way to be a crusading do-gooder or make the world a better place. (That's why any comparisons to Superman or other superheroes fall flat.) Of course if he comes across a major villain up to something bad he'll try to stop it, but that's because he's not a bad person... he just isn't a Good person either. His morality is basically based on proximity and personal connection... like most people.
    And of course he's a Saiyan so he has a selfish love of battle, and in the heat of the moment that can override almost every other concern.

    The whole "doesn't have the concept of family because he is an alien" bit is what I considered bull as he was raised by Grandpa Gohan so he definitely knows what a family is and was so at the beginning of Z. In fact the whole martial arts focus of the original dragon ball goes against this including what Roshi originally said to Goku when he started training him. It seems that ever since Namek, Toriyama has been rewriting Goku's character ever since Namek where Goku's traits were retrospectively imposed to be Saiyan traits, and then Toriyama's immense dislike of the dub that made Goku more heroic so Toriyama kept changing Goku to make him "not Superman dispite Minus being a thing" at the expense of everyone's character and then Super came around and pushed him into such extremes of character that he is completely unlikable. I noticed the same trough out DBZ and even more so in DBS. With hindsight he had it from the very start which may be the reason why the Earth gets also in so much trouble. It is being said in the actual show that if Goku wasn't around the Earth would have a lot more peace, I think extending that to the universe may be a very good point as well. Goku is known for leaving people behind and going his own way, yet idolized so much that most people ignore this and just say that it's just the way he is.
    If there is a lot more to come, then I do think we will see Goku actually turning evil to which end everyone has to join forces to take him down. This may also be why the gods and angels are so interested in him. It could well be that Goku is the one that in the future will destroy planets just to get his fix for battle. So Goku turning god of destruction will actually be in the cards but the lust for power and being the best together with his idea of "no one can beat me" will likely be his undoing.

And that he didn't directly tell his friends about it and sort of roped them in because he needed the team. Which feeds into his belief that he can get his way if he muscles through it.

    I would like to see Toyotaro and Toriyama take Goku down a path that results in self reflection for once. I mean genuine potential change. Much like the Universal Survival Tournament almost resulted in widespread death, it would be great if Goku's bumbling actions were finally able to lead to Goku experiencing true loss, such as PERMANENT death of someone. And Goku reflects on how "with great power comes great responsibility". It would be amazing to see Goku finally lose his undying lust for combat and see Vegeta become this voice of reason and true Leadership, but of course it would be no fun for him without Goku there pushing him, and Vegeta undergoes a journey WITH Goku of self reflection and possibly righting the wrong of someone's permanent death. Perhaps both would fundamentally grow and we could see Goku accept the mantle of most powerful being in the universe (or close to it) while finally being logical about what his actions can cause. But instead. It will always be unfettered "IMA FIGHT YOU NOW" and consequences be damned.

My step bro has mild Asperger's which heavily affects his social functions, he would think that he simply deserves friends and that he shouldn't have to earn them, he also felt entitled to simply get something from them just cause he asked as well didn't like to share anything of his and was quite selfish, personal space was also an issue among other social cues. he also has a hard time differing friend from family in terms of attachment, now of course this doesn't apply to all folks with Asperger's even my step bro though he was really bad for a lot of his life has improved significantly due in large part to my help. Anyway my point is that Goku seems to have much in common with my step bro and other with Asperger's, which in all honestly i only clued into after you reminded me of some of Goku's not so great qualities lol

    Goku may also just be bad at teaching actual techniques. He probably thinks that if his friends want to learn, they can go to the source, like King Kai...or find someone from Yardrat.
    It probably hasn't occurred to him that HE could actually teach these techniques.

    It's kind of like a twisted take on the Wreck-It Ralph quote "Just because you are bad guy, does not mean you are *bad guy*"
    Goku is a good guy, but he's not a "good guy", not the kind that we're used to or know by the technical definition. He's capable of selflessness in certain moments, but will still leap at a chance to satiate his lust for battle. In some ways, he kind of straddles the line of being an Antihero, but still possessing some nobler traits than what a traditional Antihero would have. While it may mean his idiocy can be exhausting, it's still kind of refreshing to see a heroic character who isn't just the typical "goody-two-shoes", because you can never really guess what Goku will do next.

    While I understand the desire of looking for in-universe explanations for these kinds of things, I just can't do it for Goku, or for most of "Dragon Ball" for that matter. Namely because, once you understand the circumstances in which Toriyama wrote those character hiccups, in-universe explanations feel way too weak by comparison. The thing is, Goku's character inconsistencies start making much more sense when you realize something: They are, for the most part, plot-driven.
    Now, not necessarily in the sense of "Toriyama writes him as the plot demands" (although there are instances of that too), but rather "Toriyama writes him to make the plot advance while fending off the elements external to the narrative that constrain him". Whether those elements are demands from his editors, the popularity polls from Shonen Jump, his reaction to the story's portrayal in the anime, or just his personal burn-out (I think this last one is probably the biggest one, and that it's still under discussed).
    Now, I'm talking about the Z section here. In "Super" it's just Toriyama going full George Lucas, mixed with probably some lingering resentment from said burn out. DBS Goku is just a caricature of his former self, way too big to take ANYTHING he does seriously, whether going by in-universe explanations or out-of-universe explanations.

    I think it's important to take into consideration Goku's childhood and upbringing.
    Goku was raised in the woods by and old man that was as much his martial arts master as he was a father-figure.
    He was never educated and never experienced any social norms. Hell he didn't even know what a girl was, and thought marriage was a food. All he knows is fighting and competition, And both all 3 aspects are apart of almost all of his social connections.
    Krillin was a rival before he was a friend.
    Chi-Chi became a martial artist and fought him in the tournament to win over Goku.
    Tien: Rival-to-Friend
    Yamcha: Rival-to-Friend
    Piccolo jr: Rival-to-Friend
    Vegeta: Rival-to-Friend
    ect, ect...
    All of his personal rivalries besides Frieza, Cell, Goku Black/Zamasu end with them becoming his friend.
    When you say that Goku views friends ships as combat, well it really is for him. It's in almost all of his relationships. To Goku Fighting=Friendship in almost all cases. How could goku view friendships as anything else since he's constantly getting that idea reinforced into his head?
    The only real exception to this is Bulma. Bulma is the only member of Goku's primary group of friends that he has had no aspect of fighting or rivalry with. The most she's ever "fought" goku was when she shot him.
    In a strange way, Bulma is the only normal friendship he has that he made that wasn't born from fighting. It was made from their shared adventure in finding the Dragon Balls.
    (Also the point about Goku never keeping in touch with his old friends is something I find odd. Friendship is a 2-way street and they all know where he lives, and they all have the means to be able to visit, so why didn't they come to see him? I'm not saying that Goku not keeping in touch isn't his fault or placing the blame entirely on his friends. But the blame can be shared by both parties.)

    I feel like with Uub that he's the one Goku believes mirrors him the most based on his memory of fighting him as Majin Buu before he was reincarnated. Maybe training Uub how to use his power is a lot like rediscovering his roots training under Roshi years ago. He sees Uub as the one most likely to carry on his legacy after his passing, something he originally saw in Gohan before he gave way to his ambition to become a scholar and following in ChiChi's wishes. I think that if Goku ever were to share any techniques, it'd be either the Kamehameha or maybe even show him how to use the Kaioken technique. But Uub could've easily have seen Goku use it himself and his prodigal ability to learn things quickly and easily would give him the opportunity to learn how to use Goku's techniques as well.

  • @ch4rlesiv115
    @ch4rlesiv115 4 года назад +1

    So I just got this idea when Masako was talking about Goku not teaching techniques (specifically instant transmission)
    So what if once Vegeta has finished Spirit Control, we see him start to learn Instant Transmission when the Yardratians suggest it. But before actually learning it Vegeta shows us that he does actually know how to do it since during his time being Gogeta and Vegito (since they both know instant transmission) he ended up somehow gaining a slight edge on how to use it and when we see him demonstrate it, it takes about 5 seconds for him to move from one spot to another and his limit for how far he can go being extreme (not enough to even reach another planet). Since his ability to use it is very low, it would explain why we haven't seen him use it as 5 whole seconds to teleport would be useless in battle. Obviously after that he gets help on how to fully use it and his power with it ends up being about the same as Goku's ability when he returned to Earth meaning Goku's instant transmission is highly superior but Vegeta can just about use it well enough for it to be useful in battle somewhat.

Everyone goes and grows their own separate ways to raise families, train students, or just have fun. Goku is stronger than all of them and while he can occasionally get someone to spar with him none have ever put effort into training enough to beat him. Even Vegeta has refocused to training and raising his kids. Goku has no stronger foe to aspire to beat or rival to keep up with. His friends are so accommodating that Goku wants for nothing. Master Roshi's old words ring true that Goku will always need someone to aspire to beat.

He embraces the fact he has a family, and even a legacy in his children. Even seemingly okay with the likes of Bra who has almost zero interest in fighting.
    Mean while Goku fought to try and train Gohan, but ignored the kids who wanted to fight. He grew up with nothing, and never seemed to appreciate anything he got. The dragon Balls only made it worse as it later made life and death pretty trivial. Which only pushed Goku's willingness to put his friends and planet in danger for a good fight. After all it can always be wished back right?

Fighting is everything to them and its how they do many things. When Chi Chi forbade Goku from sparring and training with Gohan she took away his only way to communicate.
    Image Bardock or any other non royal Saiyan, do you think they would parent the way humans do? No they wouldn't, yeah they would talk to each other but I can imagine that they would solve everything with a fight or training. Its their whole lets talk with our fist thing. Royalty would be different in that they wouldn't fight much due to not wanting to risk dying or just don't have time. And caring for their family makes sense as they need to stay alive to rule.

    The reason Goku taught the U6 Saiyans to go Super, but didn't teach the Z-Warriors Kaioken, Genkidama, or Instant Transmission is because he's so far above them in power, even in late DB and early Z, that teaching them these techniques wouldn't make them a challenge for him. Pushing Hit to expand the scope of his abilities or awakening new Super Saiyans (or getting Gohan to SSJ2) has more potential for challenge in his eyes, so that's where he puts his effort.

It would give some character development which was what Goku was lacking a lot.
