「R-TYPE」シリーズとしては3作目となる作品。特徴的だった「フォース」がなくなった代わりに、特殊ビット「サイビット」が登場したことにより、ホーミング攻撃や後方攻撃、敵弾を防ぐことが可能となっている。2人同時プレイが可能。元々はR-TYPEシリーズとは別物として開発されていた作品と言われているが、美麗なグラフィックと、ほどよい難易度で良くまとまった内容となっている。全6ステージで1周エンド。
ストーリー:
地球はもう人の住めるところではなくなっていた。環境改造も失敗に終わり、他惑星への移住計画は新天地も見つからないまま、探査中に起こった大規模なバイオハザードにより中止となってしまった。人類がたどりついた結論は、自らの手でもうひとつの地球を造り出すことであった。しかし、最高の技術を駆使して、完成させたもう一つの地球は、暴走の果てに地球へ攻撃を開始してきたのだ。

The third and final arcade release of this classic series (which would foster three further console-only sequels, see 'Series' for details) sees the Bydo Empire waging a full scale assault against other planets.
R-Type Leo possesses many of the elements that made the first two games in the series such classics, but the feel and gameplay is very different. Both the beam laser and the pod make a return, but play a different role in this game. The pod in particular now acts more like a mini 'smart bomb', in that it only detaches from the player's ship for a few seconds, and automatically homes in on enemies. The level design is also far more open than that of its predecessors, and far more forgiving.
R-Type Leo is a game that firmly divides opinions of fans of the series. Some considered it to be a blasphemy to the R-Type name, arguing that in making a game far more 'traditional', both in feel and level design, R-type Leo actually represented a step backwards from what the innovative original achieved. Less patient players undoubtedly prefer Leo's open levels and forgiving gameplay. Something that all can agree on, however, is how stunningly beautiful the game is. The detail and use of colour on both the backgrounds and enemy ships is incredible and is one of the finest examples of two-dimensional artwork the arcade has ever seen.

from my life in gaming, I just learned that m2 wanted to port this home to the mighty mega drive/Genesis...but Sega, in their glorious stupidity, denied it, and had them foolishly port gunstar heroes to the game gear, for some fuck reason. How frustrating
Apparently, this game was meant to be ported to the ill-fated Super Nintendo CD system(before the fallout with Nintendo and Sony).

敵の弾道がとても正確に自機を狙うようになったので、それ以前のSTGとちょっと違うプレイ感覚で新鮮でした。
Final areaの通過センサーが好き。

I'm a huge R-Type fan and this is the only one that i have never played, great to watch a skilled player play it though.

The only time this ship ever makes a reappearance is in R-Type Final.
It also made an reappearance in R-Type Tactics 2 and hopefully it would return in R-Type Final 2..

Yes love Rtype Leo, luckily have it on my Raspberry pi setup. Because the mechanics are different to the other games, Leo gets a rough deal. Fantastic nonetheless:)

R-Type Leo’s Likely a prequel to the R-TYPE main series. I could see the Bydo infecting Major before humanity knew about the Bydo.
That would explain the lack of a proper Force module, as they need an embyonic Bydo organism to function.

Actually, this game takes place right after the original R-Type in the same year at least according to the series' official timeline.
Jahmir White Doesn’t line up with Final’s ship chronology in either case. Though that could just be an unlock tree.

There needs to be an R-Type compilation... not just the first two games, but 1-3, Leo, Delta, Gallop, and maybe Super R-Type and Image Fight as unlockables. Final's good as a stand-alone already and easily available, so that doesn't need to be included.
Oh, and a North American release of Tactics 2!

+ OuroborosChoked I'd love that too but considering Irem kind of dissappeared and I don't think they exist anymore, getting an R-Type compilation isn't possible now. I mean they retired R-Type Delta and Final from the PSN Store.
Yeah, they just seemed to vanish. I don't think you can buy their games on the Virtual Console anymore. I went to buy the PC Engine version and it was gone. I have R-types for my PS1 which seems to be a straight conversion of the arcade original and it has R-Type 2. I think Super R-Type on the SNES was a conversion of R-Type 2 from the arcade. It's great to play R-Type 2 on the PS1 without the SNES's horrendous slow down. I also have R-Type final for my PS2, it's a great game but I would love to see a disc that has all the games including arcade only releases like Leo and one off console versions like DX on the Game Boy but souped up a bit. Edit: Did anyone buy the rights to Irem's games before they finally went bust? I suppose you can't really live off one franchise (no matter how good it is) and expect to stay in business. They only other Irem games I can think off are Major title and Dino City. Dino City was a fantastic little 2D platformer on the SNES.
Oh, and don't forget X-Multiply!
Irem still exists, they're just focused on pachinko games instead of traditional video games. As for a compilation, I think the fact that the original console games all had different publishers makes that legally very difficult, if not impossible. I'd love to see the entire franchise given the Dimensions treatment and be released on modern consoles, Steam, andGOG, but I doubt that ever happens.

Accelerator I’ll take a look, I never seen Leo in the arcade myself but just started playing on MAME. I’ve always loved the games but have just recently gained interest in the story/lore.

This R type game doesn't feel have any scary amosphere. The soundtrack is funky and cool. The accouncer said 3,2,1 let's go before stage start sound badass

As good as Leo is it never really felt like a true R-Type game to me. It lacks the doom and gloom and typical bleak and cold atmosphere of the series

R-TYPE Leo isn’t a Real R-TYPE Game, just like SMB2 isn’t a Mario Game. Both were originally COMPLETELY different games EVER Since DEVELOPMENT began, and The only Thing SMB2 has to do with The Super Mario Franchise are The Playable Characters, just like The only Thing R-TYPE LEO has to do with R-TYPE is The Design of The Ship (R9) Therefore, R-TYPE LEO does NOT quality as an R-TYPE Game. Need i Say more?

一緒にプレイしてくれるパートナーが欲しい人生だった… 実際のところ、かわいいサイビットが頼もしすぎるのと波動砲なしのレベルデザインのおかげで難易度はだいぶ低めで二周目もなく、ゆるくパターンを組んで行けばSTG中級でノーミスクリアできるくらいです。だからこそ女性にもプレイしてもらいたかったな。敵の見た目がバイドなので仕方ないか。

I thought this was more of what rtype deserved as a sequel, i hated rtype 2 and 3 for arcade and snes respectively, i don't really think we got a proper rtype sequel until rtype final and final 2 that captured the atmosphere and class of rtype 1 better

初めて見たゲームでしたが、一見してもう作品の世界観から全てが同社の「R-TYPE シリーズ」とは違う。
（概ね好評価の、他の諸兄方には大変失礼だが）これは、明らかに別のゲームである。
余りの違和感に納得がいかず、その辺の事情を調べてみてやっと納得。
その上で改めて見てみると、その後のアイレムブランドの迷走ぶりと、終焉を確実に感じさせる作品じゃないかと思います。

This game has quite possibly the funkiest Shmup soundtrack I've ever heard
I love it.
It sounds way too uplifting and cheerful compared to the overall dark and bleak atmosphere of the other R-Type games
