thats just not true. maybe it was 60 years ago b ut ive lived in teh south for over a decade now and no woman ive ever met has even introduced herself with anything other than her first name. in my experience women especially dont like to be referred to like they are an elderly woman or your teacher. the only time i call someone Mrs is if i want to distance myself from them. aka "lets not be friends and keep things professional".
Fried green tomatoes is my favorite southern dish! The movie is good too, but the book is the best. It was written by Fannie Flagg and is titled "Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe."
Best catfish I ever had was from a gas station in town. Almost all gas stations make food, usually get a pork chop in a biscuit from another. The chicken is generally bought by this chain distributor nobody thinks of and yet is worth 9 figures called Krispy Krunchy.
Greetings. As a native memphian I really enjoyed watching this and I also love your channel. I've always considered myself a black office American bloke. I've always wanted to be a liaison and be able to share and fill you in on some things you're not clear about and vice versa. Be blessed and well. Peace
G- I’ll make comfort food sometimes but it’s a bit heavy to eat everyday especially in the Texas heat. I make brown gravy with meat drippings . So I cook cube steak in a cast iron skillet, leave a couple tbsp of the meat drippings after removing steak. Add milk and let it heat add flour in small portions and stir until you get consistently you want. Don’t add flour too fast and cook over medium low heat. Salt and pepper. It took some practice. I ruined some batches before getting it right.
To make the gravy you need flour and oil ,cook on low heat heat until it turns brown add water to make a the gravy add season ( onion ,garlic, celery bell pepper ,salt black pepper ) taste, the gravy ,if too thick add little water to thin it out and reseason it. serve over rice, meats or potatoes
Funny you mentioned ‘Fried Green Tomatoes.’ I just visited the town a few days ago where it was filmed. The cafe in the movie is now an actual restaurant, where the wait time to be seated can be hours on the weekends. The gravesites made for the movie are still there. People visit them, then leave bottles of honey on them. If ever near Juliette, Georgia, it’s a nice stop over to spend about two hours.
The whistle stop cafe is open for business? I'll have to check it out as I live only a 3 hour drive south of there in North Florida. No one there says "the secret's in the sauce", do they?😂 The best friend green tomatoes I've had were at the Driftwood bistro on Jekyll Island Georgia, just a bit north of Jacksonville. A beautiful and historic place to visit! Especially during sea turtle laying season. You can take night tours, and watch them make nests and lay their eggs.
@@johnspartan5515 It is, but check online for the times it is open, as it has limited hours. When you get there put your name down on the list at the entrance ASAP; I don’t think it takes reservations, and there was already a crowd there at 10:30 am for the 11 am opening. I was there on a Sunday. The waitresses there are running around at top speed, so efficient. The place is really fun, very 1940s decor. The two headstones are at the Methodist church outside of town, mixed in with the real graves. To find them, face the church, look to your right. You’ll see a trash can next to the cemetery. The two headstones are on the other side of it. I didn’t hear anyone say that. But you can get the same tee shirt worn by the staff at a store a few doors down. After they wrapped up filming, the town asked the film crew to leave it as is. It looks just like the movie.
The most common white gravies in America are either made with ground pork, chicken or turkey. They often get most of the flavor seasoning from black pepper and sage.
As a native Memphian I can say Alcenia's was probably the best choice in the city. I've been there a number of times and it's been fantastic every time.

I just can't get over the way Brits eat with their knive & fork. It just doesn't look right when in America. BUT!!! Whatever works for a person is all good🤘 Doesn't matter what i think🤙
I think it’s an upper class thing too. We are taught to use the correct cutlery for each meal. Fish knife, soup spoon etc. Now it’s “cool” to wean babies with the baby led weening techniques, and my 5 year old grandson still uses his hands to eat. Drives me mad 😂
A lot of them do that in these videos if you didn’t notice they’ll give them food and stand right next to them and these brits are way to nice a lot of the time. Even though I’m sure the food they eat taste amazing anyways but still lol
I’m with you guys-not a fan of fin fish. I’d have made that sandwich with fried oysters. Had an oyster poboy for lunch just yesterday. Yum. I am confused about the British confusion about gravy. You can make gravy out of any meat drippings: beef, pork, chicken, turkey, sausage, ham. It’s all made basically the same way, usually using some flour to thicken it. One slightly unusual version, “red eye” gravy is made with the grease from frying up some ham and adding a splash of strong coffee (yes!). In every case the color comes from the meat, beef resulting in brown gravy but other meats normally something lighter in color.
As a Black American I feel so much pride for my culture. This is a cuisine based on slavery. How these enslaved people for over 400 years survived under nearly unspeakable conditions is a testament of their endurance. Now, it's a delicacy? I dunno. Soul food is for the soul. Everyone is welcome. Check out The History Of Soul Food. Then your Soul will understand.😊 Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound.
I think that catfish is very much an acquired taste. Every time I’ve eaten it, it tastes like mud. I like fish generally, but catfish, nope. I do know that many people like it, however.
Depends on the type of catfish. You can either get pond catfish or river catfish. I usually don't like any type of fish or seafood, but the only kind of fish I have ever liked is fresh catfish straight out of the river.
@@caitlynskiff2001 I’ve had it from the Sabine River in Texas, I think, first. Plus in a restaurant, once. I didn’t care for it either time, really - both had a faint taste of something earthy to me. I like most cold saltwater fish like halibut and cod - warm saltwater fish like grouper I don’t care for either, though.
If they didn’t take the mud vein out then that’s why. And if it’s someone that can’t cook it definitely will. It does have an acquired taste but my granny make everyone don’t like taste good because she was an extraordinary cook
As a black man from the south in the states, deep-fried everything and 3 different types of kool-aid? This is why we all have diabetes and heart problems. Christ.... This diet needs to change.
Lol There is actually a good story behind it , basically they made like a map travel guide and wanted people to drive more so they could buy more tires, so they ranked restaurants along the roads back in the 1920s.
In the south, you never call a woman you don't know by her first name without adding Miss in front of it. Best to just use Ma'am.
In Asian culture, it's the same. If I did that in front of my parents or my aunties and uncles: I'd be sent to Hell.

for darker gravy, slowly cook the roue for 30 plus minutes while stirring... cook the flour. the more time the darker the gravy.
