Every so often I come back to this video even nearly three years after the game's release. One of the best game reviews I have ever come across. The world of game journalism misses you, Sess.
Sessler's reviews are always so insightful and intelligent, while almost never taking extreme stances on any game, no matter how good it is. Truly an excellent reviewer.
tonertonki How does that make him biased? He liked one game and didn't like another game as much. That, in itself, is not necessarily indicative of bias. And really, if you're paying attention to the numbers that the reviewers give, then you're setting yourself up for disappointment. What matters is WHY they gave those numbers. Did they dislike a certain mechanic? Do they dislike a certain genre? Everybody is "biased" by the gaming background they have. That's why you look at multiple reviews for a game and see what they liked and dislike, then decide if you like and dislike the same things.
tonertonki Titanfall got better review scores by alot of reviewers even the metacritic is higher. It's also very different genres so they aren't even all the comparable anyways. You just want to say he's biased just because of his scores not agreeing with you.

Weapon0fCho1ce Oh chill out what the fuck do you owe Adam Sessler? I don't like his reviewing because he's saying a lot without saying anything. I can wrap my head around as many big words that he pukes out but at the end of the day, I want a solid, intelligent review without thinking a critic has to shove the dictionary down my throat. THAT'S why I prefer Matthewmatosis, who gives honest and intelligent reviews without thinking he has to over-complicate what he's saying. Check him out after you're done getting mad at people who hurt your feelings and calling them fucking grunts for some reason.
+ShellofaMan12 My sentence regarding communicating his opinions with grunts is referring to his use of vocabulary; I'm not sure what you think I meant. Look, I can appreciate wanting reviews that are more approachable (I'm subbed to matthewmatosis myself and have been for a while), but that doesn't mean people shouldn't be striving to be more academic with games, their subject matter, and how they relate to other media. This is clearly a person who wanted to put as much effort into praising the game as the developers did in crafting it, and that's something that itself should be praised. Personally I'm thrilled that there are still people out there who don't dumb it down like you seem to want. If you think he's not saying anything I encourage you follow along with a dictionary; you'll find that every word he uses is quite apt.
This game like effected me emotionally, and the DLC was one of the most moving experiences I've ever had as far as videogames, movies, TV shows and books go. It is of a quality and caliber that we almost never see in games. You have to think about it to appreciate it, it's a very different kind of game than the rest. The only other videogame that came close to the emotion in The Last of Us was Red Dead Redemption.
so true man, i feel the same way. i love it when games take me with them emotionally. i really did care about ellie and joel, what happened to them just like i did about john marston. my 2 fav games of all time just because i couldnt stop thinkin about them weeks after.
***** ikr, i hope they make a sequel, they can still tell so much about this storyline. same for red dead redemption but i think that will be coming soon ;)
***** yes also im very curious for the movie, hope they dont fuck it up tho. its a masterpiece of a game, not because of content but no other game ever got to me this hard
Man... this was one of the best game i have ever experienced. Naughty dog managed to perfectly mix between the cinematics and the gameplay that I hope it set a new benchmark for other developers. The intro alone thug my emotion heavily and I was instantly invested in the main Character Joel.
I'm still playing the game but thought I would take a break and come watch this review again. Adam, you have incredible insight and it really makes me appreciate the game. It's a game I can't play for too long at a time since it's so powerful and draining at the same time. It's a nervous anxiety and gasp for air above water, it really takes its toll. I thought about it all day at work, it's the kind of experience I wish I could take back in time to show people the potential this medium has.
Last of Us is a game that sells consoles. I owned a ps3 but it broke (My fault, got it off Craigslist from a shady mofo" But I am considering buying the last of us ps3 bundle..
UndeadAirwaves Not to mention the day after you buy it they will announce The Last of Us Definitive Edition for the PS4. Come on that's always how it works.
Nice little pack of games you got there too. I'm not in any huge rush to upgrade because the ps3 has so many awesome titles that will keep me busy for awhile
Thank you Mr. Sessler. I have always come to you for in depth coverage. You never dissapoint and always exceed expectations. Honest, Articulate, and a friendly. Thank you.
Not hating, but can someone tell me why the Last of Us is so good? I've never played it, I don't have the right console. To me, it looks like some typical stealth+shooting, and a typical "get the cure to safety" and you know, zombies like things. Besides the amazing graphics, what makes this game as amazing as people say?
It cannot be described honestly. But what makes this game in particular so good is the gripping game play. The health bar is the thing you need to keep an eye on, each hit you die a little inside in real life. This being supplies are literally scarce. The story has you play someone who should be hated, or considered an asshole (Though you'll end up understanding and liking Joel) The combat can be a bit wonky, nonetheless great. The enemies take a ton of bullets, so shots must count. Did i say supplies are limited....very limited? Well other than the gameplay, the compassion and emotion of an actual human that is put in a survive or die situation. The characters are what brings this game out into the spotlight. They interact with each other not as if they have to, but converse in a way you feel like you're there. Back to the gameplay. Humans are the the most difficult to fight against and you will see why. The infected are the least of your worries in this game (sometimes you won't see any infected for a while). All and all, The last of us isn't really something you can describe. Only experience. I would HIIIIGHLY recommend this game if you want a gripping story, gameplay that can be steady and smooth or chaotic and fast paced combat. I speak for most when I say indescribable gritty gory fascinating take on the already worn out zombie apocalypse genre. :) hope this helps mate.
The review tells you almost everything about it. Includes a great story, characters, it's very violent and has the most detailed world and level designs i've seen in gaming
because its never boring, unlike other shooters where you spend 14/15 hours of campaign just killing stuff, here the gameplay is much more diverse. exploring, stealth, shooting, cutscenes, driving scene etc. it just never gets boring
I watched a review this guy did on GTAV and was blown away...I'm about to scan through all his vids this dude is so well spoken not like the typical video game nerd...his breakdowns are so intricate and deep and in the GTAV review referenced some literature to show his wide range of knowledge...thumbs up
it's *supposed* to be a multiplayer experience. i play it alone sometimes and still have fun. it doesnt suck, its just that it doesnt fall within your field of interest.
***** Gotta say the original Left 4 Dead was good, the second one however sucked major balls! Anyway you can't even put L4D in the same league as the Last of Us. This game is a true masterpiece where the Left 4 Dead series is decent at best, gets repetitive rather quickly. If your going to reply please make it a sensible response :)
i disagree, left 4 dead 2 is amazingly good, as it fixes all the problems the first game had, and introduced a more diverse weapon arsenal. it even has all the campaigns from left 4 dead 1.
sorry but the way he starts off with so many $10 words made me roll my eyes and focus on what he's saying instead of what he's talking about...kinda exasperating for someone like me who just wants to know if the game is worth buying or not...
josevonbuergenwader2 i didn't know exasperating was a $10 word and even if it is I was complaining about how he crams so many $10 words in there that it makes following him a little harder that it needs to be, not the mere use of $10 words...comprende?
anything with 5 syllables when there is a synonym with 2 syllables is definitely a $10 word. but yeah he probably could replace much of his vocabulary with more layman words as long as the same message gets across.
I'm only about 5 hours into the game right now and what I can say so far is that it has tugged at my emotions more than any game I've ever played. I'm not the kind of person to get worked up over a movie or game but Naughty Dog REALLY makes you feel a connection with these characters and sends you on an emotional rollercoaster that takes this game to a new lever..its an experience. That is extremely rare for me. Combine that with the atmosphere and the overall game play and it's easy to see why this has been so successful. This is one of those games that will stick with me forever
Adam, you are one of if not the best reviewer out there because of your professional language and incredible analysis of the content and context of the game
This was my 2013 goty and a game that I enjoyed so much. This is up there with uncharted and mass effect and gears of war series that I've really truly enjoyed this past gen
Wherever Adam is, i hope he reviews TLoU2 just because i want to hear what he has to say. Sometimes when i think about TLoU i think about this review and end up watching it again. It's a fantastic review that described the experience perfectly. 5/5 review
One thing I experienced in TLOU & loved & never experienced in any other game was the action. I wasn't just taking part in a shootout or a fistfight but was more feeling, feeling every pull of the trigger every target hit every gunshot wound every punch was just amazing & very imersive!
2. and 3. These ideas all kinda coincide with each other. If Ellie keeps her immunity a secret, the way I was thinking was that near the end of the game Joel finds out or Ellie finally caves and tells him. When they get to the Firefly lab, Joel finds out that Ellie's mom/dad is a bigshot with them and instead of wanting Ellie to be smuggled out of the city because of love or devotion, they do it because they want to dissect her for the cure, which Ellie doesn't want.
I love the storyline. When I think spores, I think what if GMO crops start mutating. (In the opening sequence it actually hints at this with the newspaper article)You take away the clickers and those Bigger things(can't remember the name of them) and you have a very plausible future scenario.
Can someone please tell me about how much memory this game takes up with Saves, Installs, and Updates ... on the Disk version I already know the PSN download takes like 26 GB
I just wanted to point out a glitch I had. When Ellie was supposed to hop on to the floating board, she looped into pacing back and forth. Had to load the checkpoint right before it, but it only happened once. Still, it was funny.
I'll put each one in a different comment to make it easier. To start with 1. Keeping Sarah alive would have been a great motivation for Joel. The way I was thinking of it was to have flashbacks in the game to Joel teaching Sarah on how to survive, fight, and be like he was in the game. They could flashback whenever Joel teaches Ellie about the world or surviving. Then it could come to a head when Sarah, like Tommy joins the Fireflies and walks away from her father, opting for a better life.
I very recently got to play and beat The Last of Us: Remastered for the PS4, and I've gotta say Adam Sessler was spot on in his review, he absolutely nailed it on why it really struck a chord with players. A haunting game that was definitely worth playing!
I am just happy that I played it before watching anymore of the gameplays, it is clearly the best game I have ever played (even though I have to admit, that I simply couldn't cry at the beginning where Joel lost his daughter, because I watched pewdiepie make fun of the dead.....he really couldn't be quiet back then).
This game is so amazing, I am currently trying to beat it on survivor to get the final two trophies for the platinum trophy. This game keeps you at the edge of your seat throughout the whole experience, there's nothing more satisfying than beating a part you were stuck on earlier. Survivor however, keeps on challenging you, making it that much more wonderful. If you haven't already, I highly recommend you pick this up and give it a try.
One big problem for me was that I felt the developers really missed out on some potentially great opportunities. They played it safe and never really branched out of a typical escort the cure to the world type of plot. This plot had huge amounts of potential in and they easily could have made this game much better if they had simply changed 4 things. 1.Don't kill Sarah, 2.Keep Ellie's immunity a secret till the end, 3.Have Ellie mother/father be alive, 4.Have Ellie be oblivious to the old world
You can't really fault it for the fact that your allies can rarely get detected by enemies because it would suck if you were trying to get through an area silently and your allies alert them, blowing your cover.
You can choose to sneak and shoot when you wish, when you play on Survivor and have ridiculously limited resources you, you begin to realize how much more the stealth option was actually available when you took the brute force approach. And I can understand some not enjoying it, as it's an extremely cinematic game that makes narrative just as important, purely substance over style (though it's style is phenominal as well. It's one of the truest survival horror's I've ever played, sure top 10.
(Cont'd) With so many scavengers around the land, resources are bound to be scarce, which means that weapons would be scarce. Darwin's law of survival of the fittest truly comes into fruition with the gameplay and that's very impressive. Not only do you have to watch yourself around EVERY enemy, but you also have to stay concealed and strike when the moment calls, because if you don't, then you will very well die...easily. It adds intensity and a harrowing feeling to the gameplay that no other-
As for 4. Ellie is a bit naive about the way things used to be, but she knew what a record was, what video games were and such. It would've been interesting if she had a very limited knowledge about what the old world was like and Joel taught her a bit, showing her what records were, who Elvis Presley was, what video games were and such. This would coincide with the flashbacks to Sarah and Joel wonderfully. These are just a few ideas I had. For me, the game missed out on a unique story.
+rcspence I bought the Remastered version after playing The Last of Us 13 times on PS3. Still worth it, some glitches are fixed and the graphics actually surprised me. And you get the DLC for free, at least with the non-digital version.
I'm curious as to your idea of how that would make a better story. 1. if sarah didn't die joel would be a completely different person and would probably not be a "survivor" therefore wouldn't have been qualified to take the job of smuggling ellie. 2. I could see this one but i think most people joel included would have figured it out and it would be an obvious "plot twist". 3. i am very curious about this one
There was a recorder which recorded a doctor saying that there are other immunes and that they have tried to get a cure already and that their success rate was low.
I'm not sure what happened, I searched for your comment after I got the notification and it wasn't here. I saw it was here yesterday though. There must have been a delay or something.
I finally got around to completing this gem. my god, such a deep and complex story, at the same time.....the ending was so satisfying and compelling. this is really one of those rare perfect games.
To be honest it does have some glitches, but they always give me a laugh so I don't mind. They usually stay for a specific time or until I shoot or something. One glitch that happened to me: falling through the floor when I executed an enemy. I loved it though.
Just completed the game and I'd say its quite a special game, I havn't experienced anything like it before. Along with Zelda Ocarina of Time, FF 7, the first Halo game, Metroid Prime, Metal Gear Solid, Shadow of the colossus, GTA games, Battlefield, Resident Evil, The Knights of the Old Republic and Rainbow Six, it's one of the best and most unique gaming experiences I've had. This is not a game to be missed and if you enjoy playing games, do yourself a favour and play it.
I've always been of mind that story and characters should be the first thing a video game cares about, which is why I'm not crazy for COD or whatever. (But that is why I go crazy for games like Mass Effect). But it sounds like the real problem you have is not with the combat, but with the moments in between with Ellie and Joel where you have to find some way to get past an obstacle. Those moments weren't for gameplay, but for dialogue and character development for the two.
@Johnny Boy She was immune because the cordyceps in her brain were mutated in some way (The black women (her name i can't remember) explained it all near the end)
They do both, though. Given enough time, the infected either 'evolve' further (runners -> clickers -> bloaters), or they die, burst, and serve as a spore dispersal site. I don't think there's enough cognitive ability remaining to target an airport specifically.
Agreed, just finished uncharted 3 and most of beyond 2 souls. Can't wait to get to Ni no kuni and the last of us! Any other titles I should look out for?
its the development of the characters. it is so well done. that scene with Sam and Ellie in the bedroom was SO well done. the dialogue, voice acting, pace, everything was so perfectly done.

Adam I'm glad your back reviewing games!
Wow after playing uncharted 4 I can't believe how graphics have developed in 3 years...
*****
ikr, i hope they make a sequel, they can still tell so much about this storyline. same for red dead redemption but i think that will be coming soon ;)
*****
yes also im very curious for the movie, hope they dont fuck it up tho. its a masterpiece of a game, not because of content but no other game ever got to me this hard
Spot on review Adam. Kinda lost track of you post G4, but good to see you doing what you're doing.
I miss adam :(
Molten_ what happened to Adam?
Man... this was one of the best game i have ever experienced. Naughty dog managed to perfectly mix between the cinematics and the gameplay that I hope it set a new benchmark for other developers. The intro alone thug my emotion heavily and I was instantly invested in the main Character Joel.
People who say the ps3 sucks clearly don't know about the excellent exclusives like uncharted, god of war, the last of us and journey to name a few
"Anthropocentricism"... I both love and hate English for the same reasons.
lol "Fallacy of anthropocentrism"? It's a video game review, Adam.
Last of Us is a game that sells consoles.
I owned a ps3 but it broke (My fault, got it off Craigslist from a shady mofo"
But I am considering buying the last of us ps3 bundle..
Dude,do whatever you want but I recommend you buy it :)
249$ for a 250gb hard drive and last of us.
Now that the next generation is here, it's the best to delve into the last.
UndeadAirwaves :)
UndeadAirwaves
Not to mention the day after you buy it they will announce The Last of Us Definitive Edition for the PS4. Come on that's always how it works.
And it will have all the DLC outfits and buttery smooth framerate.
But really.
Naughty Dog said they had no plans to port it.
Back in 2020 just to listen to this review again
I miss Adam :(
Just bought a ps3 again with uncharted 3, Ni no kuni, last of us and beyond 2 souls...I'll make my next gen console choice after I indulge :-)
Nice little pack of games you got there too. I'm not in any huge rush to upgrade because the ps3 has so many awesome titles that will keep me busy for awhile
This just isn't one of the last gen best games, its one of the best games ever made
Thank you Mr. Sessler. I have always come to you for in depth coverage. You never dissapoint and always exceed expectations. Honest, Articulate, and a friendly. Thank you.
I miss Rev3. It was so much better than IGN or Game Informer.
The Last of Us 2 was just unofficially confirmed by Nolan North. In other news I almost had a heart attack.
He said that he said it from a fan's perspective. (But maybe he just tried to explain it away.)
a pure classic.
Desmond Hatchell yeah only on ps3 the story and the graphics are off the chain. By looking at it you'll think it's a ps4 game.
malik raheem
hopefully in the futher it becomes a re-release to the PS4. in 1080p B) saying hopefully :)
Dudeius Mannigast uncharted 4 coming to ps4 in the fall so I definitely gotta get my ps4.
Dudeius Mannigast PS4 TLOU has been confirmed
darksector41 tlou?
Just saw you on the NVidia RTX video. Forgot you made a ton of top notch content!
This game and Bioshock blew GTA V out of the water...
My favorite game ever...oh the feelings.
:) hope this helps mate.
for me it was the amazing story line that griped me
It's very emotional. It made me cry at some parts. You will lose reality a bit one you play this game.
I watched a review this guy did on GTAV and was blown away...I'm about to scan through all his vids this dude is so well spoken not like the typical video game nerd...his breakdowns are so intricate and deep and in the GTAV review referenced some literature to show his wide range of knowledge...thumbs up
Sessler, I love big words as much as the next guy but damn dude
Sexx
thanks, now i'm definately getting a ps4! they have a lot better exclusives
Jesus Christ. Is he reviewing a game, or reading random words out of a dictionary?
Back here the week of the sequel. I wish we could hear Adam’s opinion on this one too.
This game beats cod anytime.
roses are red.
violets are blue.
left 4 dead 3 does not exist.
this will have to do
who's ruth?
i disagree with your uneducated opinion.
it's *supposed* to be a multiplayer experience. i play it alone sometimes and still have fun. it doesnt suck, its just that it doesnt fall within your field of interest.
Skip to the end then, Lol
you said exasperating while complaining about $10 words.
josevonbuergenwader2
i didn't know exasperating was a $10 word and even if it is I was complaining about how he crams so many $10 words in there that it makes following him a little harder that it needs to be, not the mere use of $10 words...comprende?
anything with 5 syllables when there is a synonym with 2 syllables is definitely a $10 word. but yeah he probably could replace much of his vocabulary with more layman words as long as the same message gets across.
josevonbuergenwader2
what's a 2 syllable synonym for exasperate?
I'm only about 5 hours into the game right now and what I can say so far is that it has tugged at my emotions more than any game I've ever played. I'm not the kind of person to get worked up over a movie or game but Naughty Dog REALLY makes you feel a connection with these characters and sends you on an emotional rollercoaster that takes this game to a new lever..its an experience. That is extremely rare for me. Combine that with the atmosphere and the overall game play and it's easy to see why this has been so successful. This is one of those games that will stick with me forever
The last of us is good but a bit overated
Your opinion
Elmin Legend i know it is
KENNY McGaming
I think its underrated..
elaborate, please
TheMoFoCEO Short Version: Story 10/10
Gameplay 7/10
Adam, you are one of if not the best reviewer out there because of your professional language and incredible analysis of the content and context of the game
This was my 2013 goty and a game that I enjoyed so much. This is up there with uncharted and mass effect and gears of war series that I've really truly enjoyed this past gen
Wherever Adam is, i hope he reviews TLoU2 just because i want to hear what he has to say. Sometimes when i think about TLoU i think about this review and end up watching it again. It's a fantastic review that described the experience perfectly. 5/5 review
I miss your video game reviews Adam. I still remember your times with XPlay. Brings back memories of how much of a gaming nerd I once was.
Adam, after 5 years I found you gain. You sir, still got it.
One thing I experienced in TLOU & loved & never experienced in any other game was the action. I wasn't just taking part in a shootout or a fistfight but was more feeling, feeling every pull of the trigger every target hit every gunshot wound every punch was just amazing & very imersive!
Adam is THE best reviewer the gaming industry has ever had
I just came back from playing TLOU, I haven't played the game since it came out. I do miss Adam Sessler quirkiness and well spoken reviews.
God I miss you Adam Sessler... You're amazing
I love the storyline. When I think spores, I think what if GMO crops start mutating. (In the opening sequence it actually hints at this with the newspaper article)You take away the clickers and those Bigger things(can't remember the name of them) and you have a very plausible future scenario.
So how much longer until TLOU 2 ?
Can someone please tell me about how much memory this game takes up with Saves, Installs, and Updates ... on the Disk version I already know the PSN download takes like 26 GB
Hello! Does anybody know what music is playing in the background while Adam was talking in the beginning of the video?
darude sandstorm
+Rampant Insomniac Proud of yourself?
That's the first time I used that joke so yes I am proud
Good for you! I guess you're a better person now. I'm so proud of you! I'm so proud that this is as best life can get for you.
+Cloudlockheart They've been using Bill Kiley's music since I've known them from 2012. I think he's on Bandcamp.
There are cans of food they heal a little automatically when u pick them up. And there is cans of food in the kick ass multiplayer.
One big problem for me was that I felt the developers really missed out on some potentially great opportunities. They played it safe and never really branched out of a typical escort the cure to the world type of plot. This plot had huge amounts of potential in and they easily could have made this game much better if they had simply changed 4 things. 1.Don't kill Sarah, 2.Keep Ellie's immunity a secret till the end, 3.Have Ellie mother/father be alive, 4.Have Ellie be oblivious to the old world
Adam Sessler I miss you.
By the way great job on the review… Your really good at it… Kept me interested throughout…
Does the song touch anyone else in a weird way
(Cont'd) With so many scavengers around the land, resources are bound to be scarce, which means that weapons would be scarce.
For me, the game missed out on a unique story.
just got ps4 u guys think i should get remastered?
yes! Unless you've already played it and the DLC on PS3
It used to but me, too. At the same time though, it's nice that the AI isn't blowing your cover.
My God he's still here!
my first sneaking mission... i slowly approach the clicker elli comes running stomping in front of the clicker, i wince... nothing happens
The voice acting and character motion capture is some of the most impressive i have ever seen
To be honest it does have some glitches, but they always give me a laugh so I don't mind. They usually stay for a specific time or until I shoot or something. One glitch that happened to me: falling through the floor when I executed an enemy. I loved it though.
Playing this brilliant game again on the PS4, I miss Adam Sesslers reviews
lol I tried looking up and what I got on was how much should I trade in a game to get Last of Us.
Loved the game but hated all the ladders and the fact that my melee weapons degrade so quick(except the 2 by 4, expected that to break quickly)
Those moments weren't for gameplay, but for dialogue and character development for the two.
i play the game on the evenings and have no problem finding matches although it usually takes like 2-3 minutes for me
@Johnny Boy She was immune because the cordyceps in her brain were mutated in some way (The black women (her name i can't remember) explained it all near the end)
They do both, though. Given enough time, the infected either 'evolve' further (runners -> clickers -> bloaters), or they die, burst, and serve as a spore dispersal site. I don't think there's enough cognitive ability remaining to target an airport specifically.
Can someone please tell me how many hours is left of the game? (No spoilers please) Im at the part where you get to play as Ellie as the first time..
