    Update!:
    With the release of Canon R50, that definitely goes up to the top of the recommendation list right next to the ZV-E10. Both have some benefits over each other, but for a general budget camera, both are absolutely fantastic options. Though if you want to take photos, the R50 unsurprisingly takes the cake since it has an EVF.
    I want to point out that I made the review from the point of view of content creation. So, most of the critique has to do with it's video capabilities.
    For most looking to do photography, (not sports or wildlife) almost any modern camera paired with a good lens will get you great images once you learn to use the camera. And the M50 mk II is no exception.
    I would still rather extend my budget to either the R10 or something like an a6400 from Sony, but if you're looking to do just photography, the difference from the M50 mk II and even something like the Sony a6000 is pretty small.

Its compactness makes it really convenient in many specific situations such as traveling, mountain climbing, outdoor activities, special angle video shotting,...etc. And yes, I still use this camera for content creation and for some interviews, documentaries and short films. And yes, I made videos with it only in 4K.

      In terms of size, the M50 mark ii is bigger than the Sony a6000 series cameras, the Olympus OMD EM10 mk IV (that name is a mouthful) and the Sony ZV-E10. Those being the closer competitors to it.
      That being said, it's still a compact camera so it's great to grab on the go and it can do the work. I never said that it couldn't.
      I just wouldn't recommend it in 2023 since you can get better performers for the same money.

    This was very helpful and I think the honest review I needed to hear. I'm in the market for a camera, I haven't bought one in 15 years (aside for mmy cell phone) and I want to have a dedicated camera. I appreciate the tip about the RF mounts. From what I understand, when you choose a brand your more or less choosing a lens mount and the camera can come and go but lens will stick around a while. I'll be mostly shooting wild life and nature. I was unaware of the croping, this has enriched my reasearch for my first real camera.

    • @villerasku
      @villerasku  Год назад +3

      That's correct. I mean, the cameras capabilities are of course really important, but a good lens will carry through many bodies.
      There's alot more to know when it comes to lenses but you do want to look at the lenses available and their pricing for the camera your eyeing. When it comes to Canons RF mount for example, Canon has denied all third party manufacturers from making lenses for that mount so the lens selection won't be as extensive as something like Sony E and the lenses themselves will be more expensive.

    • @ngarcesp

    I have the M50 Mk II and I use it with the Canon 28mm f3.5 macro lens which *has* image stabilization. AFAIK, it's the only prime EF-M with IS. It's a bit slow at f3.5 but sharper than the kit lens and great for street photography or video - as well as macro, of course. I also use the Sigma 16mm f1.4, on a tripod for landscape, or with a gimbal for video - fantastic lens, sharp and bright. No other lenses needed, altogether the cost this kit for the quality was amazingly low.

    I have to say that in terms of value for money the ef-m mount system is now cheaper to get than ever. I bought 3 new lenses for under 550 euros($600) on sale. On the RF system that would've costed me a lot more for sure. Also there aren't many small RF mount lenses specific for aps-c and the only two of them are also quite expensive for what they offer.

    Maybe I am an old git but I have a Canon M10, M200 and M50Mk2, this "beginner camera" talk baffles and irritates me and as soon as a vlogger mentions beginner I stop watching. This time I watched to the end just to see if there was anything nice to be said about the M50. Almost ANY camera is a good camera, the good results come from the brain directing the index finger pressing the shutter button (I use the middle finger to press the shutter, it gives more stability). People cannot tell the difference when I take a photo with a 2007 Canon SX200. Going out of production? I still have 10 years usage available until I replace these cameras.

    • @villerasku
      @villerasku  Год назад +8

      The review was made from the point of view of content creation (should have been more clear about that) and I've pointed out to everyone who's asked about the photography side that the camera is great for photography when paired with a good lens just like pretty much any modern camera.
      So, while for photography, it's mostly down to skill and glass, for videography, bad quality video is bad quality video and skill won't make 1080p into 4k.

      @@villerasku Thank you for your reply, my real beef is referring to these types of camera (all brands) as beginner cameras. It is almost as though vloggers have been coerced to say that by the manufacturers in an effort to sell more cameras. I love minimalist things and my "old" M10 has delightfully few buttons but you would not notice that in the images it presents. I own a 1970 car, a 1982 motorcycle and a 1991 motorcycle and motorcycle vloggers call a motorcycle that exceeds 180km/h as a beginner bike because it is 650cc in capacity.

      @villerasku  Год назад +4

      @@GavinThomas-pix I think you're talking about content creators when you say "vlogger". Not a big deal but it just bothers me a bit since all content creators are not vloggers.
      But more on the topic, the "beginner" terminology mostly comes from the fact that the majority of professionals use more feature rich, full frame cameras. I'm not saying that you can't be a professional with something like an m50, but more-so in reference to its aimed audience.
      For the timing skill vs burst, it's a choice in workflow. If someone becomes perfect at timing their shot so they only need to go on instinct and they get fantastic shots, that's fantastic! And they can be less dependent on their cameras capabilities for that.
      But if someone wants it to be less "risky" and "cut corners" by shooting in burst, and they're willing to do the culling of a lot of images for it, that's completely okay as well.
      In the end, what matters is what the end result is and whether or not you, or the client is happy with the outcome.

    I just want to say that I have this camera and have tested it with many lenses for photography and I agree with everything you say here. If the subject is perfectly still this camera will be good for you. However, even slow moving subjects like a cat you will struggle to get focus on quickly. I also find the crop to be a huge downside for my use case as most of my subjects are very close to me and most of the beautiful lenses I've tried are not usable due to the crop. I would not recommend an APSC sensor unless you tend to work with subjects that are quite far from you and quite still

I will say though to be fair that I have also used the Canon m50 to photograph an F1 race and it did okay, so it's not that it will be a poor choice for all fast moving subjects, just in my opinion ones that are closer to you as the photographer. I also do think that it is ultimately best for still subjects. I have to be able to move back quickly from my subjects, focus and snap a photo within seconds and this has been harder with this camera. You may be able to rent it and test it out to see if it will work for your use case. I have rented lenses before and I'm sure they offer a similar service for camera bodies. I bought the camera a few weeks ago and I am happy. I already had some EF-M cameras and lenses and therefore was with me the decision now still M or RF but quite honestly did not want to buy all the lenses new and in that way this was the right decision.
    I can control my studio flashes, Godox flashes everything. It makes great photos both macro, landscape and in the studio and quite honestly if you already have the appropriate equipment why then switch to RF. Admittedly, in the future I will certainly no longer buy EF-M lenses and the next camera will certainly Eos R but until then I have now probably only a few years rest and save me the money to then buy the RF lenses used.
    So I must disagree.... of course if you change now from a DSLR and ask yourself RF or M Mount then RF, but has you had to date M-Mount it is a great camera

      If you just want 1080p, the M50 mk ii is fine, but the Sony ZV-E10 is simply better in that use. But of course, I do recommend checking out a couple of comparison videos.
      The ZV-E10 paired with something like the Sigma 16mm f1.4 would be such a great setup for a relatively low cost.
      You will need to figure out a powerbank charging system or use a dummy battery because the battery will die around a 100 minutes in 4k.

    I'm just a novice but have been using camcorder since 1987 just for family recording.
    Few years back I began to love "cinematography" by watching RUclips for that matter and read some books on cinematography.
    Recently I have watched RUclips videos about Sony FX30 which I found interesting due to it's "Cinema Line" category.
    How about Canon M50 Mark II? Can this camera produce cinematic or film look quality by using Sirui Anamorphic Lens and using Film Look LUTs or DaVinci Resolve for color processing equivalent to Sony FX30? or can be used to enter Short Film contest?
    Your advice is very highly appreciated.

      For that use the two cameras are in totally different worlds.
      If you want to do cinematic stuff and want something around the price of the M50, go for the ZV-E10, it's much better for video and as an added bonus, the mount is the same as the FX30, so all lenses will be interchangeable if you upgrade to the FX30.

The R10 is very close to the same size but with full-sized lenses. The R10 is superior and doesn't have the 4K issue - but lenses! If you buy any R-series camera you're going to need an adapter to run EF and EF-S lenses unless money is no object. EF-M mount lenses on the other hand, are plentiful, have great 3rd party support, and are very affordable. I would still recommend the M50 Mark II on this alone.

      For photography I'm assuming based on the disposable and polaroid usage? In that case the M50 Mk II will work perfectly fine when you pair it with a good lens. But for that matter, almost any relatively modern camera will work perfectly fine when paired with good glass.
      In terms of specific cameras, the R50 is the newer and significantly improved version of this camera, but it will set you back more depending on your market. If you're on a budget, I would probably opt for the R50 with an RF to EF adapter and the EF 50mm f1.8 that you can find for really cheap, since that will supplement the kit lens very nicely.
      If you want a different system though, the Sony a6100 is around the same price as the R50 but it has access to the really budget friendly Sigma lenses. You'd be compromising in terms of video features but for photography, it works better than fine.

      This video (and your comment) made me confident to commit taking my film-making journey a lot more seriously! Maybe in a few years you'll see me again as a professional vlogger with an even better camera ;)

      @wildwildsouthwestchild Did you get the camera? If yes, what are your feedbacks. I am also interested in doing content creation so I'm wondering if it's still worth getting

      @@tashoi876 Hey, I got the camera and I use it for all my videos now (and a lot of amateur photography). I did a quick comparison against my phone camera in one of my vlogs, and - obviously - the M50 is miles ahead! I got two lenses with it, a 15-45mm and a 18-55mm wide angle lens which, for a couple of hundred pounds, makes it more than worthwhile for me!
      it's comfortable, the UI is fairly straightfoward (even for a complete noob such as myself), the stabilisation is surprisingly responsive (although the lenses help) and... yeah, I recommend for a beginner, for sure! :)
      what sort of content creation are you planning? :)

    I compared it to my Samsung S23 and it got destroyed in low-light. Only good for zoom (sports/wildlife). Though times for traditional camera producers.

    Ok but the critique was all about the video specs, what about for photography only?

      For photography only, it's good when you pair it with a good lens. Just like almost any modern camera.
      As long as you don't try sports since it's burst is slow and the buffer is really small.

    Is it good to shoot beauty products and beauty videos? I’m a beginner and my budget is limited

      If for video resolution, you're satisfied with 1080p, then it's great when paired with a good lens.
      For photography, the cameras great when paired with a good lens. But that stands true for pretty much any modern camera.
