I feel like being Tom Hank's son has given Colin both the obvious advantage of name recognition in Hollywood and also freed him up to do a wider range of roles. Tom is very broadly typecast as a 'Nice guy hero'. That still means he can do many different roles, but not darker roles, even if he isn't the villain. I can't imagine Tom Hanks in Fargo, for instance, especially in the final confrontation with Billy Bob Thornton's character. If it was Tom I wouldn't be able to take that scene seriously.

I hate to disagree with Colin, but his father was a national treasure in our house during his Bosom Buddies days too. We enjoyed him and that show very much and we were very sorry when it was canceled.
It’s funny how everyone loves Tom (and I like him too) but Rita Wilson (his wife) is so underrated in my opinion. She’s a good actress & an intelligent woman (look up her Ted Talk). Her acting roles seemed to kind of dwindle & I’m guessing it was because she wanted to focus on motherhood or other career pursuits perhaps. Kind of like how Julia Roberts (who was mega famous) at the peak of her career just disappeared for over a decade after having twins & then suddenly rose like a phoenix from the ashes. Haha. Maybe Rita will too, it’s never too late. 🙂👌🏻
Rita Wilson is great, very talented actress and I think part of her acting parts dwindling, besides family commitments, is she is also very involved behind the camera a lot more now. She's a big part of the production company her and Tom own, Playtone, so I think her focus is more there these days. She also has a music career as well. Also, just as an aside, she isn't Colin's mom. I'm sure you knew that, more just leaving it here for casual fans who may read this.
