So, about the MV… first, the name of the song “Domodachi” is a word that RM came up with… it resembles the word “Tomodachi” which means friend in Japanese (in Japanese -> どもだち= Domodachi / and ともだち= tomodachi) so the difference between the two words is the ど and と with the “ which in English is used as “” to point out that a word might not mean it’s real meaning or even to denote a little bit of sarcasm… so … when you say Domodachi, instead of tomodachi, it means a “friend” (someone that pretends to be your friend)… in the lyrics at the begging, RM is basically talking about people taking advantage of him, people that constantly want something from him… while in the second part, Little Simz is the real friend showing up for him… So, in the MV that’s also what’s happening… the little girl in the middle of what looks like a chaotic crime scene, she feels lost and tries to get a long with a group of kids that don’t look that friendly, but just when she’s getting lost she meets the boy who helps her to scape the chaos (the boy also appears when little simz starts to rap)

I’m going to add some context to understand the MV: back in 2022, when BTS announced their hiatus bc of military enlistment, every member went on to make solo projects and discover themselves. RM mentioned feeling burnt out and having difficulty writing lyrics for the group at all. His album Indigo was made during this time, and while it’s incredibly mature, it’s more reminiscent of the latest BTS pop sound. Then, he met musical collective Balming Tiger, and collabed with them for the song Sexy Nukim.
Member San Yawn and RM immediately clicked, and formed a very interesting friendship. We recently got to know from the RM-Jimin album exchange (MiniMoniMusic) that 2023 was a hard year for the rest of BTS regarding their relationship with RM. He took some time apart from them, because he found in San Yawn the freedom to experiment and try things he never could before, not only musically, but regarding life experiences. This rebellious and chaotic time, and the synergy between RM and San Yawn, gave birth to RPWP.
I think this video portrays exactly that. The kid (who I guess represents RM) is peacefully biking with his friend in the beginning (RM’s biking hobby is widely known), and then is welcomed into a world of danger and chaos, while his friend has to wait outside bc he’s not allowed. Inside he meets morally ambiguous people and kids who are not really good friends to him. But there is one boy (presumably San Yawn) that genuinely cares for RM and guides him through all the mess and craziness, to help him get out safely. Once he’s out though, he looks at his peaceful life and decides he wants to go back to experience that chaos with the boy.
Back to 2024, we now know bc of MiniMoniMusic that RM is back on close terms with his members, and feels satisfied and grown from his experiences away from them. It’s also very moving to me, hearing Jimin talk about how they missed and worried about RM so much, but knew they had to let him be and return to them when it was time.

@@a.murillomelgar I think it has become very clear that despite BTS being very close and very supportive of each other that making music together has come with a lot of compromise musically and I'm sure they have each very much enjoyed being able to do their own thing and take time away. It really shows just how much they love and support and trust each other that they are able to give each other this space. I do hope they will come together again after the military to make music, but at the same time chapter 2 has shown that we don't need to worry that we won't get content of them together anymore or that they won't make music anymore.

That’s very interesting, something to ponder. I agree that San Yawn has helped in challenging that RM just needed a break from his part in BTS and just be lost/not having to keep up the expectations of his role (not just the team) but status/living breathing world of BTS. This will be my first time talking about my interpretations out loud (or at least online lol), so here’s just my take. In my opinion, that wasn’t what I got out of MMM in terms of the members. Him needing to turn off the side of him where he’s the leader of BTS has nothing to do with his personal relationship with the members, but he himself was lost and gotten confused in all the chaos that came with (and kept coming) being in BTS while being the leader yes, but the expectations and how people/everyone (not the members) who are friends or seemingly friends (which could be various types of friends) seemed to also be influence by the hype of RM of BTS’s whether it be good, weird where they only want something to gain from him, or actual romantic relationships. Relationships are weird, seeing how people react to success or lack of, people can change. Anyway, as we all know, people are constantly vying for his attention every time things happen which seems to be every moment (opinions from the public, friends, media, fans, haters, political figures/groups, etc. etc.). I would understand why this could confuse and overwhelm him as he’s only human and hadn’t had time to relax to see himself. Everything is moving around him (top, bottom, all around him, and beyond him, at all hours) and hadn’t had much room to let the Kim Namjoon breath and see himself and grow that he’s having a hard time writing. Since the song is Domodachi, like “thank you, friend”… it’s like thank you but at the same time it’s sarcastic to the ones who aren’t really friends or not anymore of the real RM/Kim Namjoon. He is not ungrateful, he just needed to find his way out of the chaos to let his true self breath and even love/accept his real self and voice (things he want to say) to find life again, so in the end, he can be healthy/healthier condition and not feel restricted by the life they’ve had in the past, where he’s ready to continue to challenge/take on the world he/they live in.

    1. Either RM did not have the time to shoot an MV with him and Lil Simz bc of the military enlistment or he decided it’s better to tell the story this way.
    2. A critic (i forgot where i read it) but they described the whole album as an “organized chaos”.
    3. Remember the title and theme of the album is “Right Place, Wrong Person”. It’s perfectly conveyed in this MV.
    4. RM went through a lot of $hit last year. He said it was like something happened to him everyday. (as ARMY we know a few of them such as: A monk revealing to the media a private conversation they had when RM visited their temple. He alluded to this in Groin. Another one is a KTX employee-let’s just say a subway employee was found to have accessed his personal records and not sure what he did with it but it was big news. Next is pretty much what happens every 2 business days in social media-a lot of haters keep targeting him for literally nothing. Kpoppies like hating on him.) So anyway, in this specific song you can infer what it’s about thru the song title: Domodachi. A play on japanese words: Domo=a way to say thanks and tomodachi=friends so domodachi is “thanks friends” but in the song lyrics you can infer that RM is being sarcastic. His so-called friends just wanna use him or is around him because he’s famous and wanna leech off him.
    5. Because of all the sh*t he went through (fake friends, a toxic relationship and break up (alluded in multiple songs in the album), media and people not respecting his privacy, fans and non-fans expecting him to speak about political and other global issues and be a diplomat (Groin lyrics), his work, plus his impending military service on top of ALL that-you can understand why this album is full of chaos, anger and frustration. This is why it’s better to listen to the album from top to bottom cos it tells a story.

One of the things RM said about the whole album is a purposeful feeling of 'off-ness' or 'wrong' since the theme was RPWP. It's supposed to be a bit unsettling, so the contrasting or different beats/instrumentation & visuals help showcase this. His genius & Sam Yawns inspiration/production made an amazing album, listening top to bottom is *chef's kiss*!! Enjoying your sincere reactions & love of good music. I agree with you saying it’s so “unafraid”. I was talking to a friend about this album and I said that I thought it was a very “brave” album for Namjoon to make. It’s so different from his usual sound and it’s not what people would expect.
A lot of people won’t get it. Which is fine. And Namjoon has never cared about chart positions or trophies so for him I’m sure he thought “fuck it”.
That being said, the album has been critically acclaimed by music publications and has been listed as one of the albums of the year in several publications (Rolling Stone, NME, Associated Press to name three). So he’s obviously doing something right.
Wonder if BigHit will submit it for Grammy consideration 🤔
Appreciate your reactions and I’m so glad you’re back! 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

my very messy domodachi interpretation: i think the kid who went into the chaos represents namjoon and the chaos he enters represents his journey through fame and attention. he leaves his friend outside (or someone kept his friend from going because the idol life is NOT for everyone). then you see all the absolute madness he witnesses inside, the cramped spaces, fighting and pushing to find your way through while a lot of other people are doing the same. finally, a friend on the inside grabs him and holds his hand, leads him through the madness until they come back to the outside. namjoon's friend is still out there waiting for him and namjoon almost makes the choice to go with him. but he turns around at the last minute because the inside might be insane, it might be painful, it might be unknown. but at the end of the day, it's his choice and he wants to be there.
or even, namjoon thought he wanted out but once the opportunity presented itself, he realized that he really does want to be in there instead.
idk if that made ANY sense lmao and there's probably much better interpretations but that's just my initial thinkings of it ♡

This song blew my mind 🤯 clarinet, sax, bass, drums, changing time signatures, all to create a beautifully unorthodox sound, idek what to call it but neo-jazz. Talking friends, I thought, how many times must he have been asked or expected to speak English? Simz speaking Korean in her last bar feels like “I care enough about you to know you.” The end of the MV to me seems like, because he found a friend willing to help him escape his chaotic life, he could choose to go back in, knowing what to expect *and* the way back out. Idk, this whole project confused me in the best way, too, I love it & can’t wait to hear your reaction after you hear it, top to bottom. Tysm, as always 💜

This song reminds me of the first time I heard progressive jazz, trying to find the groove. But it does come together- even the Japanese chanting over... Afro beats?
Little Simz is a British rapper. I just heard her in a Bose commercial with Coco Gauff and recognized her voice right away. I would not have been able to do that before this album.
Tomodachi in Japanese is thank you, friends. Changing it to domodachi makes it thank you, "friends" (quotation marks intentional) sarcastically, as in fake friends. I could be way off, but I think it's about people who want to hang and be seen with Namjoon, but aren't really friends. In contrast, the kids in the video are friends, but that's as far as I got.

I have seen some people who were uncertain about this, I always advise them to keep listening, I think that as its meant to create a slightly ominous tense uncomfortable feeling,... initially some people cannot initially get past that. It's very musically exciting( I used to play in an orchestra). So I just adore the creativity and experimentation.
... Then there is RMs lyrics and the great mv. Little Sims shredded too. Brit Grunge, afro beats, well the list of references goes on so in short LOVE THIS.

The song is about fake friends. It's about those leeches who hang off of BTS because of their fame and when sh!t hits the fan, they're only there for their exclusive "insider" knowledge rather than to stand by their friends.
Namjoon was calling out a lot of bullshit they have put up with through the years in this album. It's full of raw, emotional callouts with a sarcastic and sardonic tone.
The music video shows that same thing too. The kid meets a lot of random people but only his true friend helps him out of that dystopian situation and once the kid is out, remembering the good friend still stuck there, the kid goes back.

there's a quote from a video RM did with Jimin (MiniMoni Album exchange, super interesting if you wanna hear him talk about the album, basically he and Jimin listened to each other's albums and talked about their thoughts on them) where he talks about his personal inspirations for this album and feeling like people naturally want what they don't have, and he specifically says something to the effect of "when you're wandering, you want stability, and when you're stable, you want to wander" and I feel like this video is the perfect encapsulation of that concept. The kid finds himself in a CRAZY situation, and through the whole video is just trying to get out, but once he's back on solid ground, back to normal, he jumps back into the insanity.

It would be like calling Brockhampton or JID American pop. K-pop is essentially music (w choreo/fashion/etc) pushed via the idol industry/spaces.
This song definitely fits experimental jazz-hip hop. It works better on a playlist with Digable Planets and A Tribe Called Quest than with SKZ and TXT.

@@goeienachtAlt Kpop was coined by Balming Tiger as a way to show how vast and weird the genre can be, and they heavily contributed their sound to this album. Alt Kpop is a lot influences in one! Pop in general is vast and encompasses all sounds and styles--from Björk to Beyoncé. Alt Kpop is a nod to all of that. Lots of music transcends genres and I feel that label is weird enough to attempt at giving it a name. RM doesn't care what we call it of course, cuz it's all music in the end.

I don't know what the video is meant to be about but my take is:
He's a young boy living a peaceful normal boring life. He gets flipped in to a dark, chaotic world. There are people rioting, people running around in a frenzy, and then he gets trapped on a train with faceless, depressed and angry business men commuting and spending their time mindlessly waiting in lines. I feel like this represents the dark aspects of life: capitalism, social justice, the rat-race of life, the Matrix, etc. And then another kid shows up and guides the young boy out of the chaos, and helps him escape but for some reason doesnt/cant follow. So at the end, the kid has an opportunity to go back to his normal, safe, boring life, but he turns back to go back in to the chaos (maybe because he loved it? or) maybe because he wanted to save the friend who helped him.
    Domodachi means "thank you friend".
I saw someone suggest that this could be a commentary on RM's own story. Being a normal kid, then joining the chaos (riot/party) of the entertainment industry (suits), and longing to escape to a simpler life. But also secretly loving the chaotic world and wanting to be part of it. 🤷‍♀ Its a really really great song though. I LOVE how it goes from super weird and wrong, and then finds these pockets of PERFECTION and then dives back under to the messy noise again. It's a rollercoaster of a song for sure!

@@faithslayer500 I like this. I think it shows well that sometimes you long for what you don't have o ly to realise that it isn't the right thing for you (anymore). He might long for a simpler and more private life but he knows that the peaceful secludedness is a farce. It doesn't erase to he rest of the world. He might want to go back because of the people he knows on that world, he might want to go back because there are also positives about it or maybe because he feels he can make a difference in that world. Maybe he also doesn't feel like he belongs I that quiet life anymore.... He whole album is about identity and it doesn't necessarily provide answers, which I think is beautiful.

100% spot on with what I said from the start. N.E.R.D vibes, with an alternative twist. RM respects Pharell and is a big fan of his. They also did an interview together. And Little Simz was a perfect touch at the beat drop. Such a great song and shows RM's range as an artist, which is limitless

  • @cboz6137
    @cboz6137 2 месяца назад +6

Love that you enjoyed this. It is one of my faves from the album. "Thank you, friend." While being sarcastic because he lost a lot of friends along the way and people he thought were friends who turned out to just want a part of him. I like Simz' bars because it feels like support from a colleague who doesn't actually need something from him.
There is an excellent weverse article called "RM Writes Place" that goes over some of the various intricacies within this album. Here are just couple of excerpts with parts related to Domadochi (WV articles are incredibly well written by informed authors with access to the boys for interviews. This article is written by the same author of BTS' 10 year biography Beyond the Story.): Excerpt 1) "Someone who can be everywhere and yet belong nowhere. How do you describe someone who was born and raised in Korea but speaks English and works all over the world, who loves Whanki Kim and Epik High of Korea but also interacts with artists from all over the world? “Domodachi (feat. Little Simz)” features RM’s English verse, a Japanese chorus, and an English rap by the British rapper Little Simz. The moment when Little Simz raps “내 선은 넘지 못해 (You can't cross my line.)” in Korean symbolizes the stylization of Right Place, Wrong Person. It may sound strange if you speak Korean. It may also be strange for those who speak other languages, but the auditory freshness of the pronunciation and tone of voice, not the meaning, will strike first."
Excerpt 2) "The chorus to “Domodachi (feat. Little Simz),” with the line, “みんな友達ここで踊りましょう (Everyone, we’re friends, let’s dance here),” leaves a strong impression, and it’s not just because it switches up the mood of the song. The moment when the anxious and confused mood that gradually built up in the previous three songs gives way to a powerful and grandiose chorus in “みんな友達ここで踊りましょう” is a turning point not only for “Domodachi (feat. Little Simz),” but for the album as a whole."
You haven't done LOST yet, I think. You can probably end that with "Credit Roll" at the same time since it is less than 1:30. Isn't it awesome you can still be surprised by them? After a bit you know you don't know what to expect... yet somehow they find a way to make us say "Well I wasn't expecting that!" Even if we knew we didn't know what to expect to begin with. LOL. They can go Super Pop, Super Dark, Super Cheesy, Super Chaos and hit absolutely every subtlety in various vibes in between. Loved your reaction as always. Hope your day is great. Thanks for doing this with us. Love and Peace. 💜✌

Yaaas! Finally, a reaction to this song. This is one of my favorite songs in the record next to Around the World in A Day ft. Moses Sumney. 🫶 The song personally reminds me of Snarky Puppy’s Soro (Afriki) in Family Dinner Vol. 2. (I know you’re a music lover, so you should check that out. Amazing album.)
Anyway! Back to the song. My interpretation actually is that Domodachi isn’t dedicated to his “real” friends, per se (I mean not until Lil Simz’ part), but to all his “friends”- a “thank you” to ALL the types of friends (and relationships) he’s met in his life.
What i understood from the first verses, esp when he said, “All suckers wanna get it, take a sip, pour it in that glass silently,” was how everyone around him wants a sip from their glass, and how each one of these “friends” cunningly take and take from their glass even if it were only crumbs (or what’s the beverage counterpart of crumbs? Lol) or til it runneth over. “All the suckers wanna hit it, I'ma lead you to the heaven, blow the flute,” lol I think this is pretty self-explanatory. Everyone wants a piece of the RM meat. He does guarantee taking one to heaven though. Lol.
“All my friends wanna get around in O’s, all my friends wanna take another pose
Yeah, I’m knocked out, what a bullshit (Get the fuck down),” is that O's refer to the SAME social circles that he’s running around in this career. RM's “friends” push him to socialize or party in exclusive settings, seeking benefits from his status like event access and luxury experiences. He criticizes the superficiality of these relationships, pointing out his friends' desire for clout, and expresses that he’s “knocked out” (burnt out) by the fakeness of it all.
“I'ma stay calm when they come up with that new shit,” bro was and is TIRED. I think as ARMYs we witnessed how troubles trailed them from all fronts especially since they stepped into chapter 2 and announced their “hiatus”. It was like every single week people came up with some new BS against them and Namjoon was a punching bag for akgaes. And he had “friends” calling him, perhaps fishing for a reaction from him.
“Just light up the embers of this bonfire, my friends gather around me, one by one.” -this was actually a very interesting verse to me and i could be wrong of course, but it seems to me like he’s offering himself up for some sacrifice or something. Like he’s giving his “friends” the permission to just light the fire and dance around him. He’s not only dancing with them, but he’s offering himself up since that’s what they wanted in the first place.
Then Lil Simz’ verse came along, and she represents the true friendships he’s made along the way too. His real homies (coughs in BTS). I mean… “Cause that's my dog, that's my homie, you and I know I don't do phoney
I set the tone listen up closely, you know my name but you do not know me
    I got
Got my broski's back til the end, you can't put one hand on my friend”
Yeah they’d burn the whole world to keep each other warm.
And in some ways, I find the video representing that too. Like there are a lot of ways to interpret it, and nobody’s wrong tbh. There’s just so much imagery in it that reminds me of BTS too like the running train, the bicycles, etc. Like the little kid who sort of parted ways from his friend from the beginning most likely represents Namjoon. He got thrown into the chaotic world where adults live in, and he was thrown in all directions, but he met a friend that held his hand and guided him through the other side… even going as far as allowing him to to be or allowing him to leave. But in the end, he chose to come back to that friend, even when it meant he had to live through that suffocating life again.
So yeah! These are my two cents about the song and the video. RPWP as a whole is really a solid record. I don’t say this lightly but it’s so deserving of AOTY. You can def hear Namjoon’s overall growth as an artist. Also glad he found the right team to help make something truly remarkable out of all his dark, conflicting emotions during this time, and to give life to his creative indulgences. 🫶

And go ahead! I hope you end up enjoying the album (and the artist too). Just a fun fact in case you didn’t know it yet, Snarky Puppy is a band and that album series, “Family Dinner” is a live recording of songs they either reinterpreted or originally produced with the artist they feature in the track. So basically, they invite artists they admire from all around the world (Lalah Hathaway was one of them in vol. 1), and it’s this communal experience between them and these artists in one room jamming along and live recording it. Hence, “Family Dinner.” The live performances are on YT too if you wanna watch. 😊

For me, the mv is about comfort and safety vs unknown and the simplicity of childhood vs the chaos of adulthood. The main character leaves behind the idyllic time with his childhood friend who is still protected by his parent and enters the chaos of the real world. There the main character experiences fear and excitement and learns there is a lot more to life beyond the safety of childhood. They escape back to safety but choose to turn around back to the chaos and the unknown to experience a more exciting, and real life, rather than a safe one.

I see this as kid RM on his bike being introduced (through the underground tunnel of underground music) into adulthood in the music industry. That's the crazy, collapsing world with the riots and the fast trains, the monster, and all those people about to crash. That's the world of the fake friends that the song is about. But in the video, he makes a real friend, and that's the one who saves him and leads him back to the exit. He has a chance to leave it all behind... but ultimately decides to go back (for his one true friend? is that BTS? or maybe because he can't leave music behind after all...)

I love the whole album so, so much, and Domodachi is probably my favorite. The whole melting pot of beats, languages (english, korean and japanese), the jazzy vibes, the BASS (yeah, I am a bassline enjoyer ^^"")... It gives this jarring feeling that conveys in itself the message of the song. Lil'Sims is rocking this so hard, I loved it and I am thankful for another artist for me to discover !
As for the MV, I have so many interpretations !
To me, it's a metaphor of relationship and life. The boy is meeting with friends but launches himself in the adulting chaos alone, except for this other boy that stays by his side all the way, guiding him, protecting him, even. The train moment represents the monotony of adult life, where you tend to not stand out, to conform yourself to what's expected of you, collecting fake bonds and rinse and repeat your days. A suffocating thing from where he escapes to thanks to his everlasting friend (or his inner child, or his dreams and passion incarnate, maybe?). And at the end, he returns to this friend that stayed through thick and thin, to himself maybe, like, the person that is always here for you is yourself, and you often forget this, right?
Welp, ended up doing a huge wall of text, sorry ^^"" RPWP really hit me deep in my feels, and I can't help but dissect their works everytime ^^"""

It's a little bit of a competition-- they're all playing these super technical, weird rhythms,, but in the end, they're creating music together. As each one comes in, they just hit the pocket instinctively and somehow it all comes together.
Man, I can't wait for you to hear the rest of the tracks. Around the World in a Day is my favorite.
Also, I appreciate you giving Jimin's album a little space before you do a reaction. It shows that you really respect the guys, and I feel like a lot of reactors are losing sight of that.

This is my favorite song on this album. Love the discordant sounds and beats, and I love the flow of Little Simz verse. So good. Still excited that you are back and posting!

Domodachi and Interlude are the best songs on the album to me. So fresh. Interlude is just beautiful, and Domodachi is exactly that weird unpredictable track that goes all over the place but everything blends in perfectly. Weird in the most beutiful way.
