RM & the creative director / leader of Balming Tiger (San Yawn) are really good friends, and he was the one that encouraged RM to create RPWP before going to the military so he could get stuff off his chest.
He was also the creative director for the majority of RPWP and if you look under all of the music videos & live videos & visuals for RPWP, they all list “creative director: San Yawn”. Great collaboration between RM & the whole Balming Tiger team.
yeah, Balming Tiger's San Yawn was the creative director for all of RPWP and him and RM met on the Sexy Nukim project - so it really was the start of a great creative partnership. I feel like the Flying Lotus/Kendrick comparison makes sense
RM actually wrote poetry before he got into rap, so he kept up that aspect of his pen throughout his whole music career. That poetry continues through a lot of BTSs songs because he does a lot of writing.

Namjoon actually has a mixed tape before Mono called RM, it was released in 2015. Again, he tells a story. This mixtape has original beats from various artists ie: JCole, Drake, Major Lazer, etc

Rappers in my opinion are some of the most intelligent and literate artists - the ability to articulate a message on the fly that rhymes and maintains flow and makes sense is so impressive

mono holds such a dear place in my heart
it's kinda interesting because i didnt immediately fall in love with it on my first listen (listened to it on a random night at home) i liked it but it didn't resonate too much
then (i think it was my second listen) in a car, on a day i was so fucking exhausted, i put it on to block out the noise in my head n noise from outside
and man that shit hit different

namjoon has such a way of making you feel like you can sit with negative emotions and not fight it.
this album is like noise canceling headphones for me
i use it like a crutch on days i'm outside when i dont want to be. it has this effect of drowning out all noise but just enough to negate it and give me a little space to breathe.
the name mono is so fitting in my opinion because this album truly feels colorless. it's like white static.
that feeling you get with noise canceling headphones where your surroundings are muffled but your ears feel full.
i've listened to mono so many times and it's never failed to aide me on difficult days
i really hope namjoon knows how much people treasure his music.
there are records that you enjoy, throw your favorite songs on a playlist maybe, sing along whenever you hear it,
and there are records that melt into your life and become an integral part of it

2015 RM mixtape isn't one that you fall asleep to lol. He does have those melodic smooth beats on there but then there is Do You, Monster, and Joke that will toss you out of bed. Joke makes my brain vibrate. It is my favorite album of RM.
The "RM is waiting for someone to give him a reason" is so real and immediately reminded me of when bts announced their hiatus and the media was calling it a disbandment and namjoon wrote that letter for us ❤

More amateur than underground. It's very connected to being active in the local (mostly Hongdae in Khh) scene and RM was not. He was not "established" or known in the scene apart from some online forums. He mostly just uploaded some stuff on those sites and performed a couple times with other amateur kids for fun. The other rappers he dissed at the time were also all amateurs on those online communities, only later did some of them become "professional rappers".
Which is why he himself has never called himself an underground rapper. If you pay attention, he himself always uses the word "amateur" when he refers to that time because he knows the difference.

Underground rappers are professionals who move more locally and outside of the mainstream industry, usually they're independent or signed to underground labels. I guess a lot of people confuse that with someone who dabbles for fun.

mono. is my go-to when I’m feeling anxious. It doesn’t put me to sleep, it helps me get out of my own head and relax. I’ve listened to it so many times I’ve lost count. Someone said that Namjoon couldn’t hug us all so he created mono. That’s exactly what it feels like to me. It’s a hug from a caring friend when it’s needed most

Mono is album that works for catharsis. You need to had been in a dark place, like RM was at this time, and then this album helps you find the way out.
It’s a trip from dark madness or depression to a sweet enlightenment, and then the calming feeling of it is what it is. You’ll see as you listen to the last songs and check the lyrics.

I’m always here for the journey and the insights but your friendship and laughter is the true bonus! Mono is such a special album. It’s not like anything I’d heard a “K-pop” artist put out before. Raw vulnerable and unique. It held the title of the single album with the most #1s in the most countries on iTunes until Taylor Swift finally broke the hat record recently (yes we are working to get it back for RM). This is a true gem of hat deserves the accolades and love.

The best places to listen to everythingoes over and over again until you feel better are: in a rocking chair, in your car on the open highway, on a long, long walk when you need to calm your mind. It is the moment of catharsis in the story that is mono. If you just listen to mono on the surface you won’t understand that Namjoon is both a poet and a psychotherapist.

48:17 it's totally one to fall asleep to. I listened to this album on repeat for months on end, while going to sleep and through the night, when I first found BTS. I still put it on whenever I can't sleep, it's like a hug from someone who understands.
Side note; the thorns on the lamppost etc is called "hostile architecture" as a concept. It's really fascinating (read: horrific) to look into.

Mono is a work of art that really helped me when I was facing a toxic home environment. I remember struggling to balance my life at home and outside of it while working and going to uni. I'll always be thankful to namjoon for releasing mono it truly is a masterpiece

Mono is one of the albums that many ARMY say helped them through a dark period..when they needed comfort, they turn to this. It really is beautiful. I find Bangtan's music to be very powerful, thought provoking, relatable and truly does transcend language. I love mono and listen to it all the time. It's like a meditation, a conversation I have with myself. The lyrics are really good, well worth reading a good translation of them.
Btw, there are 5 subscales to the intro/ extroversion scale of MBTI ( Level II certified since 1995). This can bs the hardest scale to identify for others. My very best friend who I,ve known for 55 years. When I was training in MBTI I thought for sure she was extrovert ( not arguing with your personal choice of extrovert for yourself, this is just a story). Anyway after really digging and discussing I finally saw she was introverted . It is just that she is very good and energetic in the world. An awesome public speaker but needs to regenerate after, also doesn’t have a lot of company over, has a few good friends vs a large social group, She processes information internally. Other than easily engaging with others she has more introverted traits but we think of that one trait ( being social with others) as defining extroverts which is not true. Anyway.
