- Let's talk about LAUGHING GAS! What is it? How long does it last? Is it safe for all ages?
When it comes to laughing gas, dentists need to make sure you’re healthy enough for any type of dental sedation, including nitrous oxide. Be sure to review your medical history-including any allergies you have to things like eggs, medication you’re taking, or if you’ve had recent surgery-well ahead of your planned appointment. And if you feel super congested to the point you can’t breathe out your nose, then you probably won’t be able to get laughing gas that day or will want to reschedule.
Can you feel pain with laughing gas? Usually not. But it’s not because of the laughing gas, it’s because your dentist will still numb your tooth. Without any local anesthetic, you’ll still enjoy general relaxation from head to toe, making your brain less perceptive to uncomfortable stimuli.
Not all dentists offer laughing gas, so be sure to ask your dental provider if nitrous oxide is an option. Some of them may not use it if they or a staff member are pregnant, for example.
Bottom line: nitrous oxide is safe, effective, and used worldwide because of how well it works. If you have anxiety or don’t like trips to the dentist, laughing gas may be all you need to take the edge off!

Just tried NO2 for the first time yesterday for a wisdom tooth extraction. Had severe anxiety before the appointment and requested it. Felt great the entire time, not so much giggly but more so I didn’t care what was going on. Would definitely get it again for future dental procedures.
Same, I got my cavities filled today and it made me pretty much forget my body existed, also didn't care about anything, 10/10. -100/10 for the numb mouth
How was recovery? I’m getting mine removed in a few months… idk if I should to anesthesia or this… I don’t like the idea of IV sedation and have grown up with laughing gas… but my biggest worry isn’t the removal itself, but the recovery and I want don’t want to be in too much pain…

I get dental anxiety and am about to get a wisdom tooth extracted and will get N20 for the 1st time. Glad it worked for you.
@@islandluvr let me know how it goes, NO2 is what I get during fillings usually… it’s amazing just focus on breathing then just relax and even try and sleep
I went through a traumatic dental emergency that has left me feeling extremely fearful with a lot of difficulty looking at myself. Laughing gas helped me so much to forget what was going on. At first I did have a bad “dream” as it was just the incident replaying in my head while I was super sleepy from the gas. After I relaxed further it was the only way I got through my first of what may be quite a few visits to fix the trauma. I’m very grateful for it
I had all 4 of my wisdoms pulled in 2018. Had nitrous oxide first then anesthesia. I woke up and busted out laughing my ass off and was hitting on the hygienist. The funny thing is that me and her are together and adopted a child from her home country. Amazing.
that gas got you a waif and a kid 😆 glad it worked out 😊

for me, i started enjoying it after 10 minutes. i was in a dream state, and awake. (this always happens to me btw) when i feel the dream state and being awake, i start to try to wake myself up, but i'm already awake, so i just ask myself "is this real?" i really never laugh or anything after that, i always enjoy my experience somehow, everytime the dentist asks me "would you like laughing gas?" i always say "yes"
@@julianmarsh9765 Crazier stories exist, including personal ones. I wouldn’t be too surprised if this was true.
I have PTSD and severe anxiety, even moreso at the dentist. Anything more than an extraction, and the laughing gas is necessary and worth any additional costs if needed per your insurance. My eyes go from adult man who has experienced terrible things to as fearful as a child. It's necessary and worth it.

@@Haylie_Jade Yep, I was able to eat before the removal, after I had the teeth removed, I could drink water but no eating for 3 hours after. I was way too sore to eat for a day after, and I had to be careful not to dislodge the blood clot so it didn't bleed again
My heart is racing judy reasing these comments and i hsve a tooth infection this fear of dentist has been horrible 😢
I have 2 root canals I have to get. First one will start next morning, Feb 1st. It will be performed by dental students. And they have a program where all procedures done cost $30 per visit. $30!!! For a root canal or a filling or whatever!! This is in a dental clinic in Northern California. They offer Nitrous Oxide. God knows I need need it because I pass out from needles.
I hope you were able to get the treatment you needed! I was so anxious about my wisdom tooth removal, but the laughing gas significantly helped.
How did it go because I have extreme anxiety and have to get a few teeth done root canals and maybe extract my canine tooth and they keep mentioning guess if I ever had it, and I never have a nervous😢😢😢😢
Yesterday I had my first laughing gas experience. I was TRIPPING HARD. I was tingling all over, moved like I was SUPER out of balance. I was listening to Kids Bop, of course, I am a child, and I THOUGHT IT WAS AN ANIMATION. The way I was tripping made it seem like EVERYTHING WAS HUGE. The dentist's face looked unreal, and I was closing my eyes because of how relaxed I was. Don't be afraid of laughing gas. I honestly think you trip the hardest during your first experience. The procedure I was having was getting a cap on my tooth. Teeth Talk Girl, why do they take a plastic thing that has a powder mixed with water and put it in your mouth to get a mold of your teeth? I only got one cap, but they molded both top AND bottom.
They take a mould of both top and bottom so they can get an accurate bite for your cap. If the cap was too high you wouldn’t be able to close your mouth all the way; too low and you would have a gap between your top and bottom teeth.
I’ve used nitrous for about 15ish years, maybe a bit more. Without it, the numbing doesn’t work properly. My dentist said I might be so anxious the numbing isnt able to work properly, but I’m not sure about that science haha.
I’m autistic, and I’ve recently learned that in your brain, where you process sound is directly over where you process pain. It makes sense why noise is so painful. My guess is the sound of the drill is just so high pitched that once it hit my tooth, it messed my brain up and I thought I was in pain when I wasn’t. At least from the drilling.
My dentist is awesome. They turn the nitrous up, let me wear my headphones so I only hear what I want to hear, and I get sunglasses. My last appointment I think I actually fell asleep! Normally I remember the pressure from the poking and prodding after the drilling, but I remember absolutely nothing. Nitrous for the win!
I had laughing gas when I had my wisdom teeth pulled. I could barely keep my eyes open, didn't care about what they were doing, and it smelled like bubble gum. Made a 30-minute surgery feel like 2 seconds
I have my wisdom teeth pulled tomorrow and am having laughing gas and this makes me feel so much better! I’m nervous 😬

Thank you for an awesome description! Going tomorrow for a tooth extraction, and never had analgesia nitrous oxide. Thanks again!
How did it go 😢I have to get my work done this week 😢
Thank you for uploading this. It helped put my mind at rest and ease my anxiety. I have a dentist phobia and have recently attended for the first time in ten years. I was so anxious at the first appointment, that I had to go back to finish off with gas. I was also super anxious about the gas. Anyway I watched the video and was able to have gas without too much drama and the appointment went well. Will definitely be having gas next time too. I do however still feel a little "out of it" five hours later.
My dentist offers laughing gas for free, so i will definitely be doing this. i feel like a wimp at 25 years old, but the last time i had an extraction, i went pale and almost passed out from anxiety, my appointment is tomorrow morning so im in the feels right now hopeful this makes it a better experience
I was given NO2 at my last visit to get a root canal, and I discovered at its highest setting combined with the lowest O2 setting (and my completely breathing as deep and as fast as I could because I was freaking out they were drilling a long time, but it didn’t hurt) is the perfect level to feel NOTHING. One moment I was with it, then I lost my sense of hearing except for what was going on right next to me. Music? Gone. Voices were muffled. Tunnel vision and it was getting narrower with every deep breath. Then I couldn’t feel my body at all, super muscle relaxation and my vision was wavy and focus severely diminishing. I realized I was about ready to lose consciousness (of which I didn’t care and actually enjoyed) then my hearing came back and I could start to hear the O2 sensor on my finger beeping. The dentist was calling my name and asking me questions, which slowly came into hearing focus as well. This happened twice during a 2 hour root canal.
I can say I didn’t feel any pain at all and my anxiety was self made. The nitrous totally helped, but I will say do not hyperventilate…..it’ll be cool for a moment then you are off to another planet. lol

last time (and all the times before) that i had nitrous oxide at the dentist i freaked out and panicked so bad they had to reschedule everything. it was like someone turned the saturation up all the way and made me hyper aware of everything (especially the scraper, i've got sensory issues so even if i'm numbed the noise alone will cause my teeth and jaw to hurt). let's just say that's most definitely the reason i've got a severe fear of the dentist

next time don’t just read the article title.
I also had a complete anxiety ridden reaction to the nitrous but once they showed me my vitals were fine I was able to recognize it was in fact just in my head and they lowered the concentration so I wouldn't pass out, after that I did well and stayed pretty relaxed.
I always get it when I go because I'm autistic and have a lot of sensory problems, including with dental work.
One time they got it started and then the dentist left for a bit to go do something else. The assistant asked if I wanted the TV on and she turned it on and asked if Spongebob was ok. Of course it was!! And they had all the old, nostalgic episodes on then for some reason. The dentist took a while to come back but I didn't complain. I got to sit there on nitrous and watch Spongebob. That was an awesome experience

I got nitrous before my wisdom tooth surgery cuz I was nervous. They put that thing on my nose and maybe 30 seconds later I started thinking to myself "I must look dumb with this thing on my nose" and I started giggling like an idiot. The surgeon said, "That's pretty good stuff, huh?" I said "Ooooh yea" then I got the whole "count backward from 100" and I don't even remember getting to 98. Then next thing I remember my friend was helping me to the car. I could barely walk on my own. My mouth was all swollen and packed with gauze. All I could taste was blood. What a fun visit!

What about those of us, that the local does not work. When I was 16 I busted the dentist nose because he didn't believe that I wasn't numb. I still have this issue, I have never had NO2 but have been strapped into the chair for a cleaning before
So my experience with nitrous only comes from a deep cleaning where they went deep in my gums because I had some tartar build up from skipping the visits since covid, and I have terrible, terrible anxiety. My last visit a few years ago had me going into full panic mode and I had to walk out. This time with the NO2, it was very manageable, still had some stress and white-knuckled a couple of times early, but I was in "la-la" land for the most part, and before I knew it, she was done. I did tell them to give me more because the regular amount wasn't enough (not sure if they just said that to make me feel better, but I told them to crank it up a little bit lol)
I actually got it when I had surgery in my wrist so it’d be easier to put in the IV. I was laughing at first because it was like I was in a bubble and everyone got funny voices. Then I started panicking. Yeah, safe to say I was not relaxing.😂
That wasn't ⃢ nitrous

My experience with Nitrous Oxide is very different than what I have read from others. Mine was just complete amnesia. One moment they put the mask on me, the next moment we're done with the procedure. I was in disbelief when they were telling me they were done. It felt like I had jumped in time, but they told me I was fully alert the whole time and was even talking to them (which I had no memory of).
One thing I am worried about is how agreeable you become under it. Like, what if the hygenist or dentists asks me a personal question I don't want to answer?
If they are a respectable practice, the hygienist/dentist/other staff on premises won’t ask you particularly personal questions that aren’t directly related to your dental care. The most they are permitted to do is small talk (such as: “do you have any pets?” Or “how did work/school go today?” Etc.) They’re supposed to keep things on a professional level with you. If they don’t, immediately look into switching to a different provider if possible. (Source: I work in a dentist office, clerical and dental assisting). You can also have a friend or loved one come back into the exam room with you so they can recount anything that happened while you’re affected by nitrous, since you have a very unusual side effect.

idk who might see this but I'm going in to get two extremely eroded teeth out, they're all the way in the back on each side of my top jaw, I'm terrified because I've had one tooth removed a while ago when I was 12 (I'm almost 19 now), I had nova caine put in at my dentists office, waited 3 hours to get an emergency appointment, drove two hours to the office, and then waited hours for the surgeon, and at that point my nova caine had COMPLETELY, and I mean COMPLETELY, wore off, I told him and he said "okay okay" "just let me look around", and within seconds I had two nurses holding my shoulders to the back of the chair while he went full in, he pulled 3 times, in attempts to get it out, each followed by begging and screaming, after the crack and the pull, I went into shock and couldn't speak or think, up until the wind hit me in the parking lot, where I broke down harder than I ever have, it was horrible, I felt him reach into the socket and pull the infection out from underneath where my tooth was just 20 seconds prior, felt all four stitches too, its never left my mind and I didn't go to the dentist since, I'm terrified and my insurance said no to covering any laughing gas or IV sedation, I'm going to have to pay out of pocket, so I dont know, given my intense trauma, if I should just get laughing gas

I had general anesthesia for my wisdom teeth extraction
I’ve had it twice. The first time, I was in a comfortable haze right above sleep. I knew it could create a floating sensation. I thought that meant just floating slightly off the chair like in a rocking boat. Oh, no lol! I floated through walls and then a mile up the road and back before going 8 feet up in the air wondering how the tiny dental assistant could reach me way up there. Then I realized I never moved and went back to relaxing. She told me I was at the highest setting, so I made mental note. The second time I had it, I was relaxed but not in the hazy area. I asked for the highest setting, and then after a minute or two, I don’t remember anything till he was done. As far as I’m concerned, I was out 😴. I'm pretty sure my dentist knew it too because of the way he explained things afterwards like I had no idea what had happened. I’m normally terrified of sedation (horrible experience) although hazy relaxation isn’t bad, but I trust my dentist enough that it didn’t scare me when I was waking up and realizing I had more than expected.

I experienced laughing gas, So when I placed it on my nose it had a smell kinda sweet and then after my hands very giggly and i saw rainbows lightheaded and dizzy and then i was flying! And then i fainted for 10 mins and i was in the backrooms 😅 and then. I woke up and my teeth extracted :)
My mother said when a dentist tried to use laughing gas on me when I was about 11 years old, she said I stopped breathing and turned blue. She demanded that the dentist take the mask off me immediately. He then wanted her to sign a release form. She told him where to shove that. I'm going in for gum surgery tomorrow. I'm thinking about passing on the laughing gas because a hygienist said it doesn't work if you are highly anxious. I'm anxious about the laughing gas now because I stopped breathing when I was a kid. Nitrous Oxide isn't for everyone.
Bro i just had it today and I was dying laughing at the dumbest things like chicken butt😂
i had to get a filling yesterday and they gave me laughing gas. it helped a lot. i felt super calmed andd didnt care and my body went kinda numb and i actually did get giggly at the dumbest things.
@@Angela-zv1fw theres a paper that explains everything and shows side effects and warnings etc. it's up to the parent to decide if the kid gets laughing gas.. but yeah of you dont get laughing gas then its just the normal procedure without the laughing gas.

highly recommend when i say it calmed my nerves down i was completely stressed abt getting my wisdom teeth extracted after it set in i was much more calm , along with the numbing agent i was good , i did a full 180 and was super relaxed ! Even afterwards the doctor allowed me as much time as I needed to rest i felt real good im totally getting it again if im feeling overwhelmed by a dental procedure
They should put you on it so we can get a better understanding of it!
hey how long your fillings lasted?are they still in good condition
im 16. long story short, i have a huge phobia of any kind of medication. i can barley take allergy pills. i also can never ever imagine wanting ti feel like this?? i dont want to feel floaty, i dont want to be out of control. nothing will convince me that i would like this. just the idea makes me extremely uncomfortable. i know there are no side effects. i know itll be fine. but i do not want it and i get more anxiety just thinking about using laughing gas than i do without it. i have to get a root canal soon. I just got back from the consultation. The doctors highly recommend laughing if I don’t decide to use a sedation pill thing. I told them that I hate this kind of stuff and with much more feel comfortable without it. They just kept saying we’ll see how it goes will use it during numbing needles. I told him unless it’s absolutely mandatory. I do not want it and I would be more scared with it. I feel like they’re not taking me seriously when I say this is literally a phobia. I know I’ll probably end up having to get it but I seriously do not want it. If it just calms me down, I don’t see the point in it. yes i have dental anxiety but once im in the dental chair i know theirs no going back and i just deal with it without laughing gas. thoughts??
Sadly in my case, I must have a high-tolerance level to NOx because both times I've had it, I felt like I was just breathing oxygen. Only when I closed my eyes did I feel any semblance of an effect; I felt just the slightest amount of rotation, but the moment I opened my eyes it was gone. Didn't really feel any more less anxious :| the 3 shots of septocaine helped though.

I do have a question I have to go to the dentist next month cuz I have some cavities but I'm terrified of needles they told me they are going to use laughing gas on me with the laughing gas can I still feel the needle?
@@RobloxPlaysRainbows ah 😅 I have always been afraid of needles and my teeth are full of cavities but I'm too nervous to go into the dentist
I had 6 metal fillings taken out and replaced. I only got numbing cream for the shot site than the lidocaine shots. It wasn't too bad. Ya gotta go, you don't want your cavities to get bigger. Your cavities could be very small, it won't take long to drill them.
Yes, me too. Please do tell whether it really can feel the needle and do we have pain. I have breathing trouble too
When I was 10 I went to the dentist for the first time and had the worst time ever which made me not go until I was 14 then 18 and so on. When I was 10 I had an older male dentist who was rough, yelling at me, I was crying and rolling constantly. No numbing first, just the needles. I was terrified. I wish they gave me the gas first. It would've changed my whole experience. At 26 I'm still anxious and a crybaby.
I just discovered that I'm terrified of going to the dentist.
I tried requesting Nitrous Oxide when I was about to have my wisdom teeth pulled and was promptly mocked for asking. They basically told me its for kids only and to suck it up or leave. So I opted to only have the 1 tooth that was in pain pulled that day. I'm going back for the last 3 at a different office soon(its been 6 years) and I'm worried ill get the same treatment if I ask, which sucks because this sounds perfect for me.
I feel ya with this. I'm afraid of pain, and I am also afraid of being mocked. I can't say for sure, but it may have happened to me when I was younger, asking for laughing gas at an appointment.
Reading my dentists website, they seem like the kind of dentist that are more than willing to offer it. They seem to pride themselves on a good dentist experience.
You might be going to a not so good dentist. I was given anesthesia to get my wisdom teeth removed last Tuesday. I suggest going to a better dentist and having them refer to you an actual oral surgeon that will give you anesthesia for the wisdom tooth extraction.
that’s horrible!
Pretty messed up. When I had my wisdom teeth out, the surgeon provided both IV propofol and a nitrous mask. Also a demerol script for later, no questions asked. He was so kind. They had to dig the top two out, so that's prob why. Face swelled up like a chipmunk.
I'm 19 and they had no problem with giving it to me. There's no way they should deny you it either.
This video helped me so much!! I have to get my cavities removed and filled and I was really nervous about the whole laughing gas thing 😅 I have a quick question though… would they still numb you if you are just getting cavities removed and filled or no? I’m really sensitive to pain and I really don’t want to feel a lot of pain 😭😭
In the video she says they still numb you.....

Hello, Thank you for posting this video. It really helped to inform me and reduce the anxiety of receiving fhe laughing gas before my dental procedure. However Im concerned because when I was breathing in the N.O. I felt a lot of pressure in my chest and now though it’s hours after my procedure I have a sore throat. I’m concerned that the gas wasn’t administered properly. Is this something I should be concerned about. I’d appreciate any information you could offer. Thanks so much.

Last week I had laughing gas before I got sedated to have my wisdom teeth removed
I self induced myself with about 20 whip it's while taking as little oxygen as possible. The only side effect that you get other than relaxed is it kind of looks like the light are flashing. I was still able to perform everyday things. You really feel the flashing when you close your eyes
Chillin' like a villain on Penicillan, Dillan! LOL ;)
I definitely felt a fear of the needle being used to numb my mouth where I got my tooth out! It hurt
I got a root canal and the dentist used 2 needles. One to numb the area and another bigger one to numb the root I guess. The first one was light pinch, no biggie. The second one hurt like a $%^$%! So much that I jolted and grabbed his hand. He got soooooo pissed at me. Sorry, but it was a natural reaction to severe pain in my skull as I felt the needle hit bone or something. I won't go back to that guy. How is it my fault that he can't do the job right?

Is it bad to do the gas mask with getting you’re wisdom teeth out ? I am instead of iv there was those two options I am getting my wisdom teeth out August 8th.

I didn't have any sedative when my wisdom teeth were extracted. 😒
Did they just numb your mouth? I have an appointment coming up they do not use sedatives. They just numb the mouth.

When I was growing up, I was terrified of bring fillings because it hurt when they. They always gave me nitrous oxide but it had no effect on me. It was no different than breathing regular oxygen. Weird!
It will eat up your body's vitamin B12 stores. I wonder if dentists recommend their nitrous oxide patients supplement with B12 pills? When I was young, we used to suck out the remaining gas in whipped cream cans because it contained nitrous oxide. I wonder if they still make it that way? It only lasted a few seconds but it was fun.

I had laughing gas for a tooth extraction once. Never, never again. Never Again! I didn't laugh at all, but instead screamed so loud and cried that the (experienced) dentist said he had never seen the experience go so wrong and thought I was going to pass out. Even when the procedure was over, I was still screaming and crying. A few years later, I was suggested by another dentist to receive laughing gas and it was a definite no. I have never had it since and still, 10 years later, look away at the medical practice that did this procedure. I have yet to be proven on myself that laughing gas can make me laugh. What was a very nervous experience turned out to be petrifying. Never again.

@@shba9300 Gonna answer myself on this one, I am now after several dentist visits with laughing gas and it does work. Depending on the level it will reduce the gag reflex very significantly or even eliminate it completely. It feels as if you do not care at all and have little awareness how deep inside your mouth the dentist operates.

My dentist said I still seemed nervous during it. I don’t know if it worked so well. I just got sleepy,
