This channel has been such a big help for me! I had my first dental appointment in 6 years today and had to have a middle cleaning. Not a pleasant experience, but so worth it to fix how my teeth look and feel. I can’t stop staring at them and how great they look now! And the tips from your channel actually helped me get a good seal of approval from my hygienist and dentist! They were shocked, for all the build I had, what great shape my teeth and gums were in. I only had one slightly deeper than normal pocket. Thank you so so much for all this great content you provide for us 💕

So I went to a dentist for a checkup for the first time in more than a decade and that was about 13 years ago and he just got stuck in and gave me a deep clean, I had a ton of tartar which I never even knew I had, wasnt what I would call painful or anything but he was scraping around the teeth for a good hour. Luckily he said it was not serious, but if left untreated, over time it would lead to serious gum disease, The tartar seemed to come back again at my next visit, but since then ive never had the need to have a deep clean, so i must be doing something right!

Thank you for explaining how things work..

I've learnt so much from you Whitney. Here in my country, deep cleaning is called Root Planning or Root Surface Debridement. Middleman cleaning is often called deep cleaning by regular dentist and subgingival scaling by my periodontist. And regular cleaning sometimes can clean into subgingival area as well. As you can imagine, it's all very confusing when you call up the dentist and the receptionist say Yes! We do deep cleaning. But their deep cleaning is just slightly below gum line. Not the deep cleaning as you mentioned here, which is called Root Planing/Root Surface Debridement. I wish everyone in every country just sticks to the same name as per described by you.

When I went to the dentist last last month, my hygienist performed a debridement, while not a full cleaning, she said she wanted to see if that would negate the need for a deep cleaning. :) You're right about the x-rays... one of my upper molars look perfect from the outside, but underneath the filling, there's a problem area, so she was surprised when I said I didn't feel any sensitivity, etc. with the tooth.

I had a deep scale and planing done 2 months ago, after 2 years without a hygienist appointment. I was offered no numbing at all. It was all done in one session and OMG, when I got home I felt like I had been punched in the face!!! I had to take 2 ibuprofen and go to bed for a couple of hours and feel sorry for myself 😂 I also had an x-ray done 2 weeks ago which showed minimal bone loss and long healthy roots and the good news is, I went back to the hygienist today and she was really impressed by my cleaning and maintenance. She said my gums had tightened up already and the cleaning was a LOT less painful. I’m down for regular 3 monthly sessions for now to keep on top of it.

Experienced 'Deep Cleaning' for my very first time by dental hygienist following dentists novocaine oral vaccinations, was quite painful where I felt the needle was in my gums for way too long, and then another shot following 5 - 10 min. I was also surprised by the financial cost, i was expecting somewhere just under ( $ 350 ) however no way I had to pay ( $ 575 ) cash on hand with no dental insurance, my Dentist was my Hispanic neighbors friend who pursuaded me to go through this dental practice for future gum disease prevention and prevention of tooth decay. Things felt good following Deep Cleaning appointment, to visit my Dentist once in every four months for cleaning and a checkup for ( $ 100 ) per-dental-visit, and he tells me it's a friendly favor he does to his family and relatives. Idk at this point whether I'd go through Deep Cleaning for a long time, as I believe once in five years is enough. It's not for everyone, especially for those with a tight budget towards dentistry

A dentist I went to 10 years ago recommended that they do a deep cleaning on me. I didn't agree to that because I wasn't sure about it, and I was about to move to a different state. After the dentist suggested a deep cleaning, I've been trying to brush my teeth better. I went back to using an electric toothbrush I used before going to that dentist (because he suggested a different electric toothbrush brand and it was a nightmare. Nothing but bad dental appointments). I started using a different toothpaste and a waterpik. I have been having great dental appointments ever since. But if the dentist I go to now suggests a deep cleaning, now that I know what it entails because of your video, I won't be afraid to say yes.

I'll be having the deep cleaning and I'm nervous I had PTSD from dental trauma. I also have a heart mumur and although I'm 47 I still need to take the antibiotics before the deep cleaning and of course my anxiety meds
..I'm really nervous but also feeling very courageous. Because years ago I wanted to do be in Entertainment, film theater and I use to do commercial modeling . But years later I was in a horrific car accident and lost my my front tooth I was 25 years old ..then I went to the dentists that a year later was sured for nsl practice ..in other words I wasn't the only patient that he injured both physically and mentally ..and every since then I became afraid ..no . Terrified of the dentist even getting X-rays would trigger me and cause me to cry . Luckily for me I have a dentist now where the whole office down to the janitor lol is sOOO kind and patient with me. They totally understand. And they are all watching my bravery progress 😊 I believe I'm in good hands .but alot of times people don't understand the story behind why someone lets their dental hygiene go . Before the trauma I would often get compliments on my smile , now I barely smile and have learned to even talk where my missing tooth doesn't show .
But I trust that soon I'll be able to smile big again ..in fact I love smiling , laughing ..sometimes I feel guilty for being so afraid . I'm pretty courageous in all other areas of my life .but again , you just never know what a person has gone through. I can do social media very well because I can hide my smile or the condition of my teeth better . But in person there will be no meet and greets lol 😂 not till I get back my smile . It really has affected my self esteem although I'm attracted. Id much rather be healthy annnd attractive.

My dentist refused to clean some yellowish material (probably tartar) that was sitting on top of the very last molar tooth. He said cleaning that would result in sesitivity issues.
My question is, should I see another dentist to get it cleaned? Or can it be removed by homecare itself?

    • @0neInTheChambie
      @0neInTheChambie 11 месяцев назад

Tartar cant be removed at home. If your current dental provider refuses to do it you can always ask another dentist (with the original dentist's concerns mentioned) for a second opinion. If this dentist is willing to do it and you have no issues with switching dentists then you do that. No use in staying with a dentist that does not listen to the patient's wishes.

Each practice is different like how some dentists think some cavities are small or some think they are bigger, it’s up to their interpretation of your mouth not that they ripped you off more that that’s what they were trained in their dental school training. Some states teach different guidelines and not every hygienist you go to in your state graduated in your state. So different guidelines. Or newer and improved guide lines for newer graduates where more veteran hygienists are not updated to new information, could be either or.

I have a lot of bone loss caused from wearing orthodontics as a kid. Mainly on the bottom front teeth. But they said my roots are good. I have gum receding or higher pocket all around. Also they said caused by orthodontics. They haven’t recommended deep cleaning but just the regular 6 month cleaning. Is there anything else I can do? I do brush and floss regularly.

You are able to receive more frequent appointments to prevent build up in the pocket. Some patients request every 4 months (3x/yr) or every 3 months (4x/yr)- you may need to pay out of pocket for additional cleanings, but definitely worthy.
Recommend - Electric toothbrush (Oral B or Sonicare)- gently rotating the bristles towards your gum line while brushing- when brushing near the gum line, your grip and pressure of your grasp on the toothbrush should be very light, flossing daily using the “c-shape” or “hugging” each tooth gently, Waterpik’s irrigate the gums with pressurized water, and using a good oral rinse. With the recession, recommend getting fluoride treatment every time you go to the dentist in order to protect the exposed root surfaces and the enamel of the crown.
Calculus will harbor quicker in more porous areas, such as exposed root surfaces.

I caution anyone that your Dental coverage may not cover 100% deep cleaning and this may cause the facility to have you sign a promise to pay including a 3rd party credit form where you will incur a hard inquiry on your credit report. You may have easily covered such costs with your credit card. The facility may obscure this fact. Be diligent. Present your credit card for additional costs. You probably don't need the credit application for service in a normal cleaning scenario.

@@musicgirl999 yes- usually the time is set for your first appt to do all assessments including a comprehensive examination which is a detailed exam.
Establishing patients takes quite a bit of time and there may not be enough time for the hygienist for the schedule patient to complete the gingival inflammation cleaning.
Typically a new patient appt includes full medical history and accuracy, blood pressure, oral cancer screening, periodontal charting, dental charting (any restorations or missing teeth present- which takes quite a bit of time, alone) full series X-rays (which can be 18-19 pictures- with time to process the X-rays if they are phosphor plates), reviewing these X-rays in great depth takes some time, intraoral pictures may be taken for establishing the beginning of your time at an office for documentation, sometimes a diagnodent is use to detect early cavities, then speaking with the dental team about the best treatment options for your case. The dentist (-mind you, while the hygienist is working, the dentist is more than likely in the middle of other procedures in another operatory, like doing fillings or crowns) then reviews every piece of documentation collected by the hygienist and checks every tooth individually. With all of the assessments that may be completed- the schedule may not be allotted for a gingival inflammation cleaning. Gingival inflammation cleaning =more bleeding which means more rinsing and suctioning. detecting buildup which is covered by the inflammed gums takes more precision than a typical cleaning as the buildup is scattered and not just in one spot on the tooth.
Yes, prophylaxis cleanings are precise, but by this point, patients are established and the hygienist is able to complete the cleaning in the allotted time.
Once the treatment is planned for a gingival inflammation cleaning- the front desk has to get confirmation with the insurance and evidence for why this treatment was decided, that it is okay to proceed as this is a different cost and this should be reviewed prior to proceeding so the patient is aware of the APPROXIMATE out of pocket cost.
Many times hygienists are given only 60-80 mins for a new patient.
And when splitting up all the procedures, this would leave MAYBE AT MOST - 20 mins to complete a cleaning after assessments.
      I hope this helps.
