    I have a '23 Cayenne E-Hybrid and a '24 M3. The Cayenne is our second, and when we purchased, we compared to the X5 45e. The 45e suspension was a mess, particularly compared to the Cayenne. Also, the hybrid range and EV only power level of the Cayenne was higher. Fast forward to now, and they have both been refreshed. The Cayenne has gotten cheaper inside (there is evidence of cost cutting apparent if you look at the two cars back to back you can easily spot) while at the same time getting more expensive. And the BMW's electric performance has gone up, both in range and in terms of electric power. The PHEV component for us was important as 80% of our use is local around town driving; in the 14k miles we've put on the car, over 10k have been with the ICE switched off, which is fantastic.
    I will say that having driven an X5 for over 1,200 KM all over Southern Germany last summer, in addition to the 5k miles on my M3 I'm not sure that I'd make the same choice again. Yes, the Cayenne virtues are there but the way I'd spec them, you're talking over $35k difference now in as-tested prices, apples to apples. And with the cayenne getting cheaper inside and the BMW's electric performance continuing to remain strong, plus the larger cargo capacity, the much better tech and the lower operating cost.....I can't make much of a case for the base Cayenne. And the PHEV struggles to justify it's price.
    I think you guys nailed the pros and cons to a tee in this video. In the end it comes down to what you want. Both are excellent vehicles and the Porsche handling really is fantastic for what it is. But is that worth smaller interior, worse tech, a worse base engine, worse transmission tuning, higher initial cost and higher running costs (MPG plus service)? I don't know. I'm like Jack, a Porsche homer but lover of both brands. My take is if you can get used to the iDrive 8.5 screen (it doesn't bother me) the X5 is the winner 9/10 times.
    Nice video.

      People who afford them buy them. At the same time, they depreciate like crazy. Sure expenses are high, but ok, how much exactly are they? I watched a video of a previous entry level X5 previous gen cover at least 600 miles on a full tank, which actually, is quite efficient. Electronics do wear off, but this rule applies to all modern cars. I believe that pure ignorance and rumours drives people thinking that such cars are money pits, but in reality, they are as much of a money pit as every other brand, considering the largest ones by volume.

      @@rahulmandala4930 I had an X5 off lease with a CPO. In the 6 months I owned the 3 year old 45k mile car, the HVAC blower went out, the rear differential blew out, and the sensor went bad in the transfer case. I didn’t pay for anything with the CPO, but got rid of it before that CPO ran out. Mine had a B58, which with the ZF was a great drivetrain. It was the rest of the car that was an issue. Also lack a some basic stuff like an adaptive cruise is just stupid this day when a $25k Corolla from the same year has it standard. The X5 had a $75k MSRP when it was new.

    • @hungson215
      @hungson215 2 месяца назад +21

      @rahulmandala4930 unreliability is not all about the engine or the transmission. German cars have a really complex electronic system and the cost to fix them is quite expensive. Also, they are not really thoughtful when designing the engine to make it easy to service which explains the high cost. Finally, the depreciation is worst because the demand for German cars out of warranty is low compare to other brands. So, leasing is the best option

    Great review! I cross-shopped these two early last year when it was time to replace my wife's X3. Disclaimer: I'm also a P-car fanboy. I loved the way the Cayenne drove, and loved the legroom in the backseat. But there wasn't a $12K difference in price, as stated in this review - it was more like $17K when compared to a moderately equipped Cayenne, and a whopping $22K difference when checking off all the Porsche options to make it nearly identical from a feature perspective to a well-equipped X5. This made the decision a relatively easy one - a BMW X5 4.0i is sitting in the driveway with nearly 20K miles on it. Zero regrets! One feature that the Cayenne didn't have: remote start (not sure if this has been address by the Cayenne refresh). Since I make my wife park her car outside so that my P-car gets the comfy garage spot, this simple feature is one that we both agree is a huge advantage to the BMW. Love the reviews - keep them coming!!

    I bought the 2024 BMW x5 couple of months ago. It is my wife's main car but I drive it on the weekend when we go out together with the little one. Actually, this was the exact two car my wife and I were deciding before we landed on the X5. The main thing came down to price, the Porsche, at the highest build was about $30K CAD more than the X5. I test drove the Cayenne, it felt like driving a truck, which the X5 also did but not as much. Cayenne was more comfortable and you were spot on with regards to the stableness of the suspension especially on bumpier roads, and spot on with regards to comfort when driving long road trips. Within the 1st month of ownership I drove the X5 600KMs (there and back) and honestly it was not the most comfortable experience I've had. Regardless, it's a great daily family car and my wife loves it. It's also great for child seats in the back and the price for us was pretty good. The B58 is a beast and actually has about 375HP. In Sport / Sport + it feels like you are driving a X3 M40i or M340i, the thing is a beast. Overall pretty good all around car for a decent change, and the truck space is insane, I can fit a full size stroller + 8 bags of groceries with very little issue or nuance.

Had a Macan S a while back that I loved before I swapped for the BMW 540 and immediately regretted that decision (that face you make when your dealer drives away in your Porsche). BMW was great and agree the B58 was smooth. So smooth and strong. I had lots of issues with the auto start stop in the BMW, not so in the porsche, it feels more integrated and smoother in the 2024 Cayenne. The only way to turn off the auto start stop is puttin git into sport mode. I test drive both the 2024 Cayenne and 2024 BMW X5. The Cayanne won out. My wife drives a Macan base now and we don't have kids. We love and value the way both Porsches drive and are willing to pay a little more for that. The car felt too unsettled over broken roads and the steering felt twichy on highways. Then, I drove a Cayenne coupe with the new two-valve air spring. Night and day difference like they were two completely different vehicles, the air springs is a MUST.

    We're most like going to be buying a Cayenne to replace our aging '17 Touareg, which has been a very good vehicle and has the refinement that is still relevant and I think is actually better isolated than the current X5 shockingly. I like knowing what to expect which isn't much in the long haul as we haven't had any repair on the Touareg after 80k miles compared to some BMW and MBZ models nowadays. There are a shocking amount of both of these SUV's in my area which should say something on how good they both are. The BMW is a good choice but like you all say it comes down to preference and which is better at isolation which is what we want. My biggest grip with German SUV's is staggered tires, these suv's weigh a lot and can blow through tire very easy and 315 section tires aren't cheap to be throwing some on every year or two.

    My dad cross-shopped both of these vehicles and chose the X5, it comes close to a base Cayenne from a performance standpoint for a lot less money, it’s a lot cheaper to maintain too, additionally the X5 has the superior infotainment system and smoother ride quality, M Sport Pkg is a must-have with the X5 imo, I’m a fan of both these SUVs but would get a fully loaded X5 40i M Sport for right around 90 grand, a V8 Cayenne is def the ultimate driver’s SUV but idc to have that level of performance in a SUV personally

    The B58 motor I had in my 2020 X6 still takes the cake as the best performing, smoothest powertrain of any vehicle I’ve ever owned! I am a proud Defender owner now and even though I prefer German engineering specifically in relation to their powertrains, the size, ride height, pedigree and less popularity of Rover products has completely locked me with the Brand! To date, the full Size Range Rover is the most luxurious and glorious SUV I’ve ever driven!

    I'd go with the refreshed Genesis GV80. These are all 5000lbs SUVs so I would not mind sacrificing a bit of handling and driving dynamics for the increased cargo space and legroom. Both the Cayenne and X5 have more cramped rear seats and less cargo space than a CRV or Santa Fe last gen.
    GV80 seems to do the family and cargo stuff better. I also prefer its design inside and out. Turns more heads than any base X5 or Cayenne ever will and for a good reason. Lastly reliability and maintenance will certainly be less expensive considering Genesis has had an amazing track record by avoiding all the plagueing Hyundai/KIA engines/trans stuff.
    Main thing I'd miss out on is the B58 efficiency and power with the ZF8. Aside from that i wouldnt ve missing out on much. Honestly I find Genesis interiors to be more premium. If you dont pay for the optional leather packages, the Porsche and BMW have more plastics and stuff instead of stitched leather on the dash, door panels, etc over the Genesis.

  • @didinos
    @didinos 2 месяца назад +1

    The reliability issue with many of these cars arises when, after the lease ends, they are purchased by someone who couldn't afford them new, taking advantage of the depreciation. However, what many buyers overlook is that maintenance costs don't depreciate. Whether you buy the car new or used, the cost of servicing remains the same. Additionally, these vehicles still require replacement parts that wear out over time. So, even if you bought the car for $50,000 instead of its original $100,000 price tag, you'll still face maintenance costs as if it were a $100,000 car.
    So it’s less a matter of reliability and more a matter of people not knowing what they are getting themselves into, leaving the cars bad maintened which leads to even worse problems.

    For their comment regarding the Cayenne riding more smooth vs the X5 - this particular X5 has the optional 22'' wheels which will make the ride more rough by comparison. The Cayenne looks like it has base 19's or 20's with more rubber, therefore, yes, it will ride smoother.

    We had a Cayenne Turbo S, traded down for an X5 M50i (no X5M could be found at the time), and now we're back to a Cayenne Turbo (the Turbo S is no longer offered 😭). We regretted trading for the M50i from day one. If you're a person who likes driving "excitement" (as much as can be had in an SUV), the Cayenne is a much better vehicle than the X5. That said, shopping in the price range of the vehicles in this video, you'd have to be either insane or a huge Porsche fanboy to buy an entry-level Cayenne. The quality of materials is nowhere near up to snuff for what you're paying for it. For that price, the X5 is a much, MUCH better buy.

The X3 has a better drivetrain and more room though not quite the same material quality. I recently drove an X5. It really didn't feel much bigger than the X3 as far as passenger space and did not feel anymore premium as far as ride and quietness.

    • @MrBeckPJ
      @MrBeckPJ 2 месяца назад

      Not impossible. If you do a simple search for used 2020 models for both X5s and Cayennes listed to sell as of today, the price ranges available show clear differences in depreciation.
      2020 X5s listed to sell range from $33K - $48K, depending on options, engine, mileage, etc. 2020 Cayennes are listed between $39K - $66K, again depending on options, engine, mileage, etc. The difference in depreciation grows more pronounced the older the cars are, favoring Porsche (not the case for certain models, but generally true overall across the respective brands).
      The X7 is BMW's flagship SUV. Flagship models typically have different depreciation rates (some better, some worse, depending on the brand--I'm looking at you MB & Audi) than the down range models. There isn't a Porsche equivalent to the X7, so you can't compare depreciation between similar class of models as you can with the X5 and the Cayenne.
      Of course, IMO depreciation rates shouldn't be a significant factor when considering buying a car for personal use. But for those who do appreciate those differences, that's what they are. At least as of today. With today's market that could change significant a year from now, so... 🤷
