This also provides a potential in-universe explanation for why they decided to make it suck: When bringing it to the masses they were worried it would be to easy to kill people so they toned it back... Covering turf is what separates splatoon from other shooters, so they're gonna focus on that, so they explain how to use it in the mode where covering turf matters the most.

On the dualie squelchers: I actually really like calling its playstyle "stick and move". That phrase refers to motion in things like boxing where you are trying to simultaneously land hits while remaining evasive and dodging any counterattacks. It's not dead on, but that somewhat fits the weapon's vibe of using dodge rolls to both kite the enemy and be in your more lethal firing mode imo.

I think with "Jr" and "Pro", Sheldon's more talking about the skill floor than the ceiling. Like, a Jr in Turf War can just happily spew ink everywhere without having to worry about silly things like "ink management" or "aim". And I think the sub and special are easier to get value out of, especially compared to the vPro's kit. Not really a factor in comp play of course, but I can see why they start Level 1 players with the Jr.

Fun fact about elevators: for a lot of elevators, maybe even most elevators though I'm not sure if I can say all, the close door button actually doesn't do anything to the door! It exists to make an impatient person feel like they have control in the situation but the door closes at the exact same normal time regardless of if/when it's pressed. Which is what Sheldon is referencing here.
Edit: so looking into things closer this is mostly a US thing. If you live outside of the US or in NYC you probably have a working close door button. It was also a result of disability legislation which requires the door be open for a minimum of 3 seconds which prompted elevator manufacturers to disable the button as a button that circumvents the 3 second rule would violate the law.

the flingza's explanation of it changing shape when flicking it horizontally vs vertically IS something more specific to the flingza roller's design
the roller (the part that touches the ground when rolling) has an extendible sort of "cap" (like a two-segment telescopic tube) that's only extended in horizontal mode, making the rolling cylinder resemble that of other roller weapons. when held in the vertical position, this cap is retracted to expose the fountain pen inside
other rollers don't really have this form change and only pivot the whole rolling part of the weapon

My main grievance with the Splattershot Pros is how ink-hungry the weapons are. Once you throw a sub, you have only a dozen or so shots in the tank before you run out, which is bad in the heat of a fight. So it’s not exactly the most “beginner friendly” as you say it is.

    • @DragonOfSummer
      @DragonOfSummer Год назад +8

Gonna second this. I play casually and the Pro is way harder due to having a higher aiming requirement and the limited ink tank. Stuff like that is a hurdle for newer players. With the regular Splattershot I can afford to panic and wave it around and I'll usually get enough shots in to splat an opponent in a casual match.
At least for me it's one of the shooters I find hardest to use. You can't waste shots with it.

After watching this video, I think a lot of the kits that don’t make sense are a result of nintendo believing that certain subs/specials serve a different purpose than what their actual use case is, the biggest example i see coming up multiple times is the sprinkler. As Gem says in the video, nintendo seems to think it’s a zoning tool and there are a few kits that I think would make a lot of sense if the sprinkler was actually able to do what sheldon is saying it does.

What I think the distinction for "pro/experienced players" regarding the splattershots is cone firing radius. The wider cone of the jr makes painting much easier and pinpoint accuracy in combat more difficult. You can spray areas a little more comfortably but also don't need to be as accurate with your shots to kill as long as your enemy isn't returning fire with equal or better accuracy. On the flipside, the poorer ink efficiency but better range and accuracy when going from jr to splattershot to pro makes it a poorer painting tool but better dualing weapon. I believe the devs are saying beginners should find more comfort in painting primarilly while pros can compensate for worse painting abilities through splatting. I believe this is also reflected in the difference of priorities painting vs splatting has in turf vs ranked modes (not that splatting is deprioritized, but painting has much heavier nessecity in turf and the objectives are much less confrontationally oriented). If my guess is correct the connotation simply just means better dualist and worse painting makes it easier for experienced hands to pick it up, though as you had said as far as dualist focused weapons the pros are fundimentally more basic and a good starting place. Jumping straight into other dual-oriented guns like .52gal or squeezer may leave newer players frustrated with less mobility options for escaping or navigating ontop of poorer ground paint covering.

I think the slosher deco line is about ink as the actual sloshing projectiles. So it rains down ink with it's pretty decent fall damage shots. I think there's a few more references to 'ink' in the same way and that is how they've worded some patch notes like the 2.0 splatana wiper hitbox buff.
L-3 curling bomb line is potentially hinting at contact damage + 3 tap combo.
Mentions of Damage/Power are almost always per shot/hit.
The sprinkler lines are mind boggling though I think the Aero MG is the only time it's even vaguely accurate.

I feel like expecting meta-relevant commentary on a weapons' overall performance is a bit unrealistic. I don't think Nintendo is specifically designing weapons to be good or bad, presumably they want everything to work and think everything does. They're not gonna call a weapon trash in the description meant to draw people to use it, and when they wrote the description they probably didn't think it was bad anyway.
I think the context they're using "power" for most of these is damage per shot, ,and somewhat relative to the weapon class. Not overall DPS. The stat bars that come with the weapons also seem to reflect that.

It's crazy, "power" seems to be used simultaneously for damage, time to splat, synergy, and viability.
Like, the Rapid Blaster does less damage than the other Blasters and has a slower time to splat, so lower "power". N-Zap is towards the lower end of Shooter damage, so less "power". Splat Dualies and Suction Bombs are, uhhh... I guess _they_ think this is a bad combo or a weak kit? Which is funny when you think of all the weapons with a lack of tools that WISH they had a Suction Bomb.
Though in general, I'm baffled SO OFTEN by how Sheldon sets up his transitions! Rapid Blaster has Ink Mine, so his setup is "well this weapon is low in power, _but_ you have ink mine for that"
Like... No "The Rapid Blaster's shots already keep the enemies away from you, so you've got Ink Mines for the ones that get too close" or anything like that? The Ink Mine "makes up" for the "lack in power"?

I like how Sheldon literally quotes Marvel (spiderman theme but "slosher can" instead of "spider can") then the Bible ("your bucket runeth over" instead of "your cup runeth over") then Gem literally marked him off for that.
Also, right now people only use the reeflux for missiles, but I think the weapon itself has potential.
It can play like a squiffer, inkbrush, or kind of like an octobrush/slosher in that it can quickly snipe at medium range, can kill quickly at close range (given great aim and vertical shots are used to their full potential), and apply some pressure over ledges (30-45 random damage is nothing to scoff at).
Curling bomb is great for it, and I have found a niche use case for the 20 damage from hit. If you throw a properly fused curling bomb at someone, it can be used as pressure, it could hit them and reduce a four tap to a three tap (or a three tap to a two tap if you use one 45 damage shot), or it can be used to get close to someone, but generally close range is used for when you sneak up on someone, similar to how inkbrush plays.
Missiles is nice, but I think wail would be useful and zipcaster would be fun, given that it can zip right next to someone and two tap them (potentially one tap with arm explosion and triple tap hit). Also, with a different special people might have tried the weapon as a weapon, not a disposable tool only used to get missiles.
For a second kit, fizzy would obviously be good, but burst or splat are probably the best choices for its playstyle. Applying pressure with splat and sometimes hitting them with the 30 damage from the edge of the explosion is really helpful and the 30-60 damage of burst would be really good, seeing as hitting them with a partial charge (I think half of first charge) then a burst would kill (kind of like carbon deco, but a little weaker).
