No. You should still concentrate normal fire on cohozuna, just not at the exclusion of all else. Shoot cohozuna, use extra eggs on it, fire on lessers if threatened and eliminate bosses ASAP
Another factor to consider is on what tide level you fight the Cohozuna. Low to Normal tide is more managble, though a larger space tends to make people split apart instead of stick together.
High tide though will make you sweat for those scales.
High tide is definitely hard mode
@@VaskoGames When I was fighting the Cohozuna, I initially thought that it only high tides because the first three times I fought it has only been on high tides :(
On spawning grounds...
Though it certainly can be harder during high tide, it's worth noting that it is much easier to hit the cohozuna with the golden eggs since he cant travel as far away (just my experience). High tide really starts to be a problem when one or more flyfish(es?) spawn in to remind you of how limited your space is. Remember to use your specials especially if its on the flyfish lol.

One thing probebly worth mentioning is weapons that are "chonozuna killers" basically main weapons that pump out a ton of DPS and should focus on luring chonozuna into good positions and dealing consistent DPS over boss killing and egg firing.
Big examples including:
Splating class in general (hydra and ballpoint espcially)
Both Splatana's (melee charge slashes)
Dapples (dodge rolls hurt)
Sploosh
Some grizzoco weapons (G-splatana, G-stringer, G-charger)
Usually a rotation has at least one of these weapons or something slightly weaker like e-liter, glooga, 96, blob etc. There are DPS chart's if you want specifics.
Also don't wait on using crab do it at the very start of a wave less hectic then.

This is why I love the hydra
E-liter is one of, if not the best weapon for Cohozuna damage, one charged shot doesn't fall too short of Golden Egg damage
And for the crab tank, as long as you use it, the time you do doesn't matter too much, but it should be used when there are too many bosses
Im no professional when it comes to splatoon dps but i learned from a random coho encounter that dynamo and flingza (andnmore recently big swig if youre lucky) are good rollers for shavin off hp if you just so happen to get stuck against cohozuna for a bit
What's really weird about scale rates is that you can get golden scales even after a defeat, I've gotten more golden scales in this way.
If you go to the Splatoon wiki, it shows you the probability of scales. Higher hazard equals higher chance for silver and gold. The total amount of scales is determined by the amount of damage the team does, and how quickly you do it. You get additional scales for every 12.5% dmg done, and bonus scales depending on how much time is left.
The % chance of silver and gold are per scale. Each scale earned has the same % chance of being gold and such

I've defeated Coho twice (once after time ran out so I got cheated out of a scale but got a gold still) I have gotten I think 3 golds and 9 total silver (almost enough for yellow suit :( )
My biggest problem is that teammates ignore other teammates that have a ton of eggs and often lead the giant coho salmon into difficult to reach areas. It’s best to keep it near the mountain of eggs instead of panicking and running away.
Month one everyone went hard on "throw eggs, don't waste time shooting him" and I've had a worse time fighting him ever since.
One situational thing that i saw a while ago on Twitter was that if you can find a way to roll into the Cohozuna many times in a row with a strong roller (like the dynamo) you can deal a decent amount of damage (Similar to those crazy overfishing waves during goldie seeking with a dynamo roller, look it up if you haven't heard of it). It's very tough to pull off though, since you need to position yourself between a wall so that you don't get pushed away and the Cohozuna as it targets you. But if you happen to have a roller during an xtrawave, keep it in mind.
Dynamo hits for 400 damage when rolling, so as you can imagine, many of those hits in rapid succession . . . .
Exactly! I found a clip of someone elses where they just got stuck against cohozuna with a dynamo it just kept bumping into it so. Its hp was draining like crazy and all bc of they couldnt move
The worst is when he shows up and the game thinks the best thing ever is to give you the Undercover Brella.

@@nick3805 true I don't think it's the absolute best and it definitely needs someone to paint for it but under the right situations I think it's a really great weapon for most situations
Salmon run is a game of priorities and managing the salmon AI, and pretty much everything in this guide further proves that. The fact there's exact times the boss super jumps and that luring is still a required strategy means everything in this mode can be optimized and perfected with enough planning.
Yeah, but 90% of the Salmon run players only focus on delivering eggs and when a really big horde in high tide arrives they keep delivering eggs while only one member fight against all the horde alone.
But yeah Prioritizing should be what players need to play, if the situation demands to fight you fight and if the situation is favorable for gathering eggs, then gather the eggs.
I didn’t know about the auto targeting
Lillie tip: Don’t be like me and just fight at the entire round at the Cohozuna with your main, you might do damage but it little and the other boss will surround you.
Fire but don’t focus unless you’re close by.
Also make sure you have a good crew. My role is a mix of medic to help other to recover from splatted and have known for my dodging skills.
Also use your special, it the one thing I see repeatedly not be used.

Er... Your role depends on the weapon you get, and really you should strive to be an adaptable jack of all trades at all times. Dodging is good, though- I think the skill that will make anyone instantly better at freelancing is learning how to stay alive no matter what
This heavily depends on your weapon. If you have any high dps weapons: hydra, heavy, dapples, reeflux (half charged shots surprisingly have very high dps) sploosh. Any weapon that can lay down high consistent damage should focus on absolutely nothing but firing at cohozuna unless another boss is in the way. The rest of the team should clear bosses and throw eggs. All those weapons do far more damage with the main weapon than you can get by egg hunting. Obviously if your team needs help, help them but you should spend every available moment firing at him.
A hydra alone can more or less solo him.
If you have any decent shooter, like splattershot or zap, you should also put a good bit of focus on him too
The rewards for defeating him are abysmal anyway
This is the most frustrating part of Salmon Run. I absolutely love this part of the game, but the scale rewards are way off. If they just increased the scale output and made more prizes to choose from, it would solve a lot of the frustration. I rotate between ranked and salmon run and still struggle with saving up enough to get the top prizes/rewards.
That's why I'll be only happy with my green outfit, not only my favorite color, but the farm to at least get another one is unnecessary tedious and don't seems worth it besides flex

It’s funny how Cohozuna is the king fish when Flyfish are arguably far more powerful and more terrifying than the behemoth salmonid.
Also good luck fighting Cohozuna on high tide! Want a cherry on top? Max flyfish and a dash of small fries.
The egg cannon gives everyone a tool to help dealing with Flyfish . . .
The only problem is not enough people actually use it that way.

After months playing Salmon Run, I put Fly Fish lower on the tier list, they are annoying but blow off one launcher and they become a minor announce and no more spawn in. Stingers and Big Shots are FAR more dangerous and annoying. I even have noticed that Fish Sticks are actually the nost dangerous support, alongside Slamming Lids. They are weak but their support abilities make them extremely foolish to ignore. They are one of the immediate bosses one should kill or they give Flyfish an extremely higher chance of killing you. Less room to move, you die
Not getting splatted is also definitely important in order to successfully finish waves as well as for the extra wave, more important for sure on higher difficulties. It is equally as valuable as getting kills/splats. This is something that I think a lot of players still struggle with, same in ranked. How much will kills actually matter if the player in question also dies a lot? Finding the right balance between splatting and surviving is certainly the key here.
one thing i struggle with is timing and aiming specials and golden eggs at bosses, i wish there was a video out there showing exactly how to use each special for each boss the best

The best way to deal with cohozuna is to manage the amount of backup he has. The problem is, it's hard to do that on high tide spawning grounds with an angry Godzilla fish man

golden eggs should pierce on overkill (like, if I shot a chum, the egg should continue through and deal 700 to the next thing it hits)

A big thing is: if you have hydra splatting focus on the cohozuna, your shots do more dps than eggs will, same for if you have crab tank

I would want cohozuna to be a bit more common. 2 great ways without changing how many matches you need for the meter could be:
Meter not resetting after each shift. The resetting feels like a middle finger for not beating wave 3 and playing cohozuna as your last match of a session. Please Nintendo.
Guaranteed cohozuna when anybody's meter is full. Currently each full meter in a team increases cohozuna chance and 4 guarantees it. If this makes them too common then make the chances bigger and guarantee lower than currently
I ended up cutting this from the video, but I did have a segment about how frequently it appears and yep, in general you run into him once every 30-60 minutes, which is not very often at all... I feel like they did this so that even the hardcore salmon run players can have something to play for years later
@@VaskoGames yeah, i get wanting to have it be a rare thing but it feels a bit _too_ rare, it should be every 15-30 minutes i feel
8:09 - I feel like its more similar to Genshin's artifact RNG than the probability of you getting a 5-Star character, because there you actually have a pity guarantee system (Every 90 wishes you're garenteed to get a 5-Star character, if the character you get is a standard character then you'll be garenteed to get the limited 5-Star character)
Its kinda like how most of the time when you farm for artifacts in Genshin, you get stats that you don't want or have no use for, like how in Salmon Run Cohozuna fights you'll get scales you don't want or have no use for and have a small chance to get what you actually want
This is exactly why I have almost every character at level 80, but only like 6 of them have artifacts that are good
When I used Killer wail 5.1 very close to cohozuna, (Right up to it) it shredded the boss's damage. I recommend that if you have Killer wail 5.1, you should go right up to the boss and then activate it.
I was stuck at 8 silver scales for at least a week's worth of rotations and only recently got the 2 i needed for my first different colored slop suit (I then proceeded to completely botch the next few jobs that I did for my 2nd super bonus and completely fail the next Cohozuna 😭) so thanks for the tips!

I remember being swarmed by glow flies and was confused because I normally never got targeted first but as I stopped to figure it out I got rushed by salmon bois and that's when it hit me that my team was doomed. ... my team ended in less than 10 seconds after I got wrecked
I would recommend Hazmie for anyone looking for advice on individual rotations for salmon run- they even point out which weapons are best for focusing Cohozuna when there is a weapon that does notably high damage to it
As somone whos gotten 216+ Coho Wins, I do have some valuable tips!!!
Crab is the MOST VALUABLE DPS special against Coho. I practically shoot 100% of my shots at it. It shredss and takes a pretty big chunk out of Coho. All the other specials are pretty bad at attacking it directly, so you would rather prioritize taking out bosses with them.
ALWAYS have a Golden Egg on you when you can. Bosses do tend to come to you eventually if you give it time and you want a Golden Egg at the ready to throw when they come near you to take them out faster. (So basically I throw 2 eggs, then hold onto 1 for the next boss)
ALWAYS have at least ONE person (preferably the worker who has the highest DPS weapon) constantly shooting Coho at alll times to capitalize every valuable second you have. While the other 3 kill bosses for eggs.
Learn to Dodge Roll for invulnerability frames to avoid taking damage from Coho Belly slams.

i think the absolute hardest part is playing freelance where you cant really communicate these tips/instructions to your teammates 😭 like even if i do all of these things, my teammates might not know what to do, and theres a high chance we’d still lose the cohozuna
The main problem for me with cohozuna is not enough gold eggs and the limited timer for the chunky boy
I'm really glad you went over that the eggs can take out most other bosses, giving you a net gain in eggs.
Another thing to keep in mind is that you can use your specials right at the start to hit the cohozuna and get rid of the bosses at the same time, since they generally spawn in right next to each other. If successful, you're not only efficient but it gives you time to wail on him with your main weapons for a few seconds undisturbed.
Whether or not to use your special right at the start is a quick call you need to make based on which bosses spawn and if your special can take them out while the chonky boy is there.
This mostly works for high and low tides, since you can immediately spot where they are spawning from. On mid tide it can take too long to spot them and then they are too spread out already for this.
However, using your specials early also gives you big momentum to start with, and the round ends when you drain the HP, not when the timer runs out, so it's generally a good idea.
There is little significance about winning an Xtrawave. The difference between a win by a second and a loss by a second is only one scale. The goal is not to win to the exclusion of anything else, it's to deal as much damage as possible as fast as possible.
It's interesting that the game doesn't let you demote yourself all the way down to Go-Getter, mainly because it's something my group has done as a challenge during Big Run (the challenge being: could we get ourselves back to VP before Big Run was over)
HLM warrior here. Good video, but I would expand #3 to say that pretty much any downtime by anyone should be used to get a few hits in on the guy, especially on weapon sets that simply lack DpS. As in, control enemies first, and once they are controlled, deal chip damage to the main target. It makes a difference. It's easiest to do with long-ranged weapons because they don't have to move up to deal damage.
One thing I do that I find helpful is utilize the fishsticks! Getting up high helps me clear out bosses and dead teammates. I also like popping my specials from up there, specifically the crab and jetpack specials. Unless a Maws pops up, being up on the pole keeps you free from the mobs on the ground that would swarm you and waste your special. Using a jetpack from the pole gives you extra height to attack from too!
One bit of advice with the jetpack is if the Zuna goes to jump while you're hitting it you can actually aim and hit him in mid air with the jetpack! No wasted shots!

I love that Cohozuna has no concrete strategy to beat it, it just enforces the idea of meeting this ultimate boss you cannot defeat. I fought him like 20 times and I have beaten him only once (it actually was yesterday)

You covered a lot, thx! Although, you did miss a few things, it shouldn’t be the one closest using their main more, it should the one with the highest dps weapon, every weapon rotation I check to see which has the highest dps, so if I get that weapon, I know whenever to focus on big boy or the bosses and chums.
Another thing is the tide and the map, some maps are better at high tide (all are basically) but getting normal or low tide on some maps are good too.
Also please use a booyah bomb/tristrike at the start of the match, it gives you a really good start and gets you set for the entire match

Thanks for the video, the three tips are really helpful! I felt like they were something I should have known already, but didn't. Actually, I think I did know about the third one. But that's only because my first (of two) Cohozuna takedowns was helped along by my use of the mini splatling I'd been given to do some DPS on him. So I can back you up on that one.

Building upon what was said here, Generally the player staying close to Cohozuna, guiding his movement while attacking him (the term for this is Kiting) should be one with a higher DPS weapon.
Here are some examples: either of the Splatanas, any of the Splatlings, E-liter, .96 Gal, .52 Gal, Bloblober, Splat Brella, Dapple Dualies, Splat Dualies, Sploosh-o-matic, the Grizzco Stringer, or the Grizzco Splatana.
Some of the slower weapons, like Hydra Splatling, are harder to do this with, but can have an IMMENSE payoff. (A tip for these slower weapons is to keep an egg on you, using it on lessers as needed to keep yourself alive. I did this in the recent Snipewriter rotation, and it worked quite well, as I saved myself multiple times, contributing to us winning)
This is good advice. I never thought of keeping an egg on me when I had a slower weapon. Will do that now!
My last round with Cohozuna I got landed with the paintbrush. I occasionally slapped him while trying to keep paths open for everyone, especially the target player, and controlling the lessers to the best of my ability (I’m not a paintbrush main). I died at the very end but we did it.

Hazmy, in their community posts, uploads guides for rotations, including difficulty, what weapons should focus on, and usually tips applicable to extra waves
Some things to note are that one, he has a secret weak point, his belly, and two, he takes more egg damage if someone is attacking him.
“Too many deaths by chum.” I felt that in my heart and soul.
I’m so close to owning one of everything in the salmon shop, all I need left are the x999 silver scale banner and the x100 gold scale Goldie decoration, it’s such a grind 😤
one thing that's personally helped me with cohozunas is watching overfishers and how they deal with him. overfishers are the best of the best when it comes to salmon run, pumping out more eggs in a single wave than a lot of (lower ranked) players can in a whole shift. not only do they have a lot of good overall tips (that work much better in a group, most you shouldn't try solo) such as luring, how to deal with shore bosses + their eggs, etc. but they're especially insane with king salmonids, often times killing it way before that 30 second cut off for the most amount of scales. my personal favourite at the moment is brianthedrummer and his friends. they're insane overfishers, and hold the sockeye random rotation record at 241 eggs (and did another shift [244 eggs] during which brian had no voice and couldn't communicate past the in game options). watching their shifts and actually observing the strageties they use has made me a way better salmon runner. go watch brian and his fellow overfishers because they're insane.
I've played a TON on salmon run on splat3 (enough to get the yellow and pink suit) and I remember all the times my team managed to kill conozuna

So I've only encountered the cohozuna a mere handful of times and it's a big panic allll the time. I didn't even notice you can shoot the other boss salmonid with the eggs too. That's a tidal game changer
I was actually able to get 10 scales from a loss once. I think it was because we dealt the last bit of damage after the "times up" tape covered the screen. Not a super important correction, but an interesting one.

i would like to add that some weapons are better for shooting the coho over others because of dps (you can check in the main lobby by how quickly the unkillable dummy gets to 999) so weapons like ballpoint (paint mode), 52, 96, splash, shot, pro, all accell at this i would also like to say that 2 people shoot it and the other 2 grab eggs (this also only applies if the weapons are mobile enough to fight other things that aren't coho)
Many weapons have increased damage in Salmon Run (E-liter hiting for 600 damage on a full charge, for example) so this isn't as sound a strategy as one might think. They should put a dummy like that in the Salmon Run lobby.

8:19 These Genshin odds are correct, unless if you put the pity system into account. It gets way more crazy and complex when you involve the pity system.
The best method I've seen and done is one player focuses on leading Cohozuna around while the other three focus on killing bosses and pilling eggs up. During that time make sure to hit Coho with those golden eggs and NOT just pile them up, the one leading him can grab eggs too. Many players NEED to remember to shoot cohozuna with their main weapon, do not be afraid too. Honestly Coho isn't that dangerous outside how his health and mass. His bellyflop will kill you but his slam isn't always an instant kill. You can even get him stuck in a loop if he is following you and you go up a Fish Stick tower, everytime he tries to attack you you can jump over it. Your weapon will do more damage than you think even if weak. Small damage is better than no damage at all. And with damage, CONSTANTLY attack and damage him. Yes dealing with other Salmonids is vital but every amount of damage done adds up, like saving coins and taking them to the bank. Besides Big Shots, Stingers, or Fly Fish, never waste your time at the shore unless you have chosen to lead Coho there to bombard him with golden eggs. Once you have lowered his health to about, maybe the 10 to 20% margin, this is the time where the team together needs to focus on attacking Coho with their main weapons especially when the time could be around 20 to 30 seconds left. At that point, focusing on golden eggs is a gamble but any left to use helps. Every time I've won the extrawave or was about too, his health was low and we began to all shoot him with our mains. Coho is easy to dodge, he doesn't hurt you unless he does an attack. Your weapons that rotation do make a difference but I've found that the methods I've used will work no matter the weapon combos. Obviously Grizzco weapons will kill him easier and will certain other weapons. Seriously, be close enough together, don't run off far away to the shore, constantly damage him, listen to teammates(use voice chat if friends or discord if real friends), kill bosses and have your coho guide lead him near them, know your surroundings so you don't get trapped, have an escape route, shoot him with main when his health is low, and you will more often than not win. And yes the scales you get are determined by Time, Damage, Level, and I've noticed how many times you got Splatted. When I was Splatted less I got more scales, I've even got where I get all three types at the end.

These rates are nothing compared to the drop rates of a Rathalos plate. Monster hunter has either taught me to be patient and put in the effort or has made me numb to the idea of grinding (especially since that’s half of the fun I find. Working for the end goal).
@Hikaru Not really a fair comparison. You usually only need a few Rathalos Plates or Mantles when crafting weapons/armors (unless you're trying to make like, every Rath weapon or something). The benefit that Rath Plates/Mantles have over Koho Scales is that you can exclusively go after Rath over and over again until you have the material amount you need. Versus Koho, where you need to play around 4+ matches to get him to appear, and then the fight begins. Then you need to pray you get more than just bronze scales, rinse, and repeat.
With Rathalos, you just have to single him out and constantly hunt him until he is done. That shouldn't take very long. With Koho, you have to get through multiple RNG waves, win at said waves, get him to show up, and then hope you get the scales to drop, and you need FAR more scales of each type than Rath Plates/Mantles. It also doesn't help that you could win and get no silver or gold scales, but lose and get a silver or even a gold scale. Koho is WAY more RNG dependent.
While i do agree that playing with friends has a much better chance of defeating Cohozuna, playing with random isn't that bad, im on EGVP and all my random team have managed to mostly kill the king cause they all know their roles. I say in profreshional is where the struggle with randoms is really at
Got 20 gold scales currently spent like 10 all from random matches.
Another RUclipsr claimed that hitting his belly does more damage than hitting his back, though I don't know if that and hitting his head has different damage as well.
i have no friends who team up w me during salmon run consistently enough to find a conozuha, and when its w randoms theres little coordination 😭 i try and take my weapon into consideration like is it high damage? is the fire rate high? can i guess effectively what my teammates need? i get overwhelmed too easily though 💔
