A brilliant visual here of an artist, alone, inhabiting his own world, creating a new reality with his instrument. So mesmerizing!
Well thought out comment and I quite agree. Nigel and Dowland are a perfect combination. I really hope this video and the like can encourage people to listen to music such as this.
Next performance will be alone vacant derelict housing estate. Cannot wait.
I never realized how beautiful of an instrument this is. Thank you.
Absolutely wonderful musicality and tone!
Lute is chamber instrument whose acoustic dynamic range & Dowland repertoire is ill suited for public gymnasium. How can you speak of musicality & tone?
This blows me away...that last one.
that was awesomeness personified. he is sitting in the very middle of the gymnasium. that hard-wood floor extends outward a good 40 ft in all directions and the ceiling is a good 30 ft above him.
uno de los mas grandes de todos los tiempos...
Beautifully handled.
wonderful
Sounds lovely.
Very nice playing. That was a different version of Can She Excuse My Wrongs (Mrs. Whites Thing) at 4:25 than I had heard for accompaniment with voice. Well done.
perhaps a different edition? definitely not standard
Great soft tone!
That noise at 1:10 really adds to the performance
Heaven
Bravo!
Well done Nigel it reminds me of Bream in many ways.
Mmm....have to disagree here: sure, it's lute and it's Dowland, but stylistically they're very different, as is the case when you compare Julian Bream to most authentically correct lute players, for that matter...
@@tmjcbs I think Bream handles it like guitar. He plays it very beethovnish. I am greatfull to Bream - he opened the world of vihuela - but I now I prefer much more North or H. Smith.
@@TheBlues088 I like Hopkinson Smith he has a rare Vancian lute recording that is Fabulous. But for my taste this is the best version of fantasia no. 7 :ruclips.net/video/mRDETBHwhjw/видео.html and for my taste proof to that he will stand the test of time. As for beethovnish? I like his dynamic contrast as opposed to the subdued musicianship of most lute players.
👏👏👏👍
Why no singing of the ayre?
These are John Dowland's own solo lute versions of tunes he also published as "Songs or Ayres."
How many courses?
Seven looks like
4:26
Great we must educate the yanks about music.
John Williams cant be playing this instrument.
Such a sparse, drab setting & dress for performance of exquisite music. How miserably impoverished modern musical world is with its college gyms & worker's overalls. Can North be expected to bring delight of heaven from lute & Dowland composition with such choice of stage? No. He really has to bash out chords & melody. Whatever this music is, it is not Dowland.
