    Thank you for addressing this. Many years ago (early 80s), my ex was a deboner. He cut the meat off of mainly cows to go for pet consumption. By law, they had to add charcoal to the meat before it went out so that it didn't go for human consumption. This meat was usually quite gross. Glad to hear there have been changes. Surprised it has taken this long.

    I work at a pet food store that sells Just Food for Dogs and Just Food For Cats. We had some people from the company come by and they told us that they are going to be coming out with more textures and formulas for cats! Some minced and shredded options are going to be available as well as more protein options. Don't know exactly when, but it sounds like soon.

      I live in western Oklahoma, where can I find Just food for cat's. My cat had surgery for UTI crystals. She can only eat urinary tract stuff. I've been looking for another brand. I've been getting her Purina UTI formula (when I can find it) can. Other than that I have been giving her Iams urinary tract formula dry. I am having a very hard time finding any thing she can eat. Plus the price of everything keeps going up. I'm disabled and on social security, so have to watch the budget. So where can I get the just for cat's food? Any suggestions?

    I fed Smalls to my cat almost exclusively from about January through October 2021 (last year). I fell in love with the quality, choice, and eco friendly packaging. And Mittens loved it!! Over the months, though, my order would be incorrect, freezer burnt, or I got a batch of one protein that was horrible quality that either smelled awful or was off in color or texture, and my cat wouldn't touch it. They were great about communication through text and gave me a full refund on the (seemingly) spoiled batch, though. Also, their fish recipe (Mittens' favorite) just disappeared from their supply. It was never communicated with customers, and I only got an answer when I asked customer service directly. They were apparently going to start working with a new/better supplier starting in late summer/early fall, but I see from their site it hasn't been back yet. Overall really disappointing to have something my cat and I used to love decline in quality quickly, and we haven't been back since.
    *Update February 2023* I returned to Smalls once they introduced the "pulled" texture, and we are back to loving Smalls! It's still a bit on the pricey side, so I'll only work it into her food rotation every now and then. But we love the pulled chicken and turkey!

      @lillywhite4021 Hi! They unfortunately don't do the pulled texture anymore, which she loved. Since adopting a kitten in the summer, I gave Smalls a try again since they're approved for all life stages, not just adult maintenance. I've ordered the ground chicken and turkey recipes since then and they're both winners here! New packaging is so much better than the old, too.

    I can't remember if it was nom nom or smalls, but they wouldn't share information about the minimum protein or how much of it was from animal sources. It was really great to see your food analyses. One of my boys really likes Darwin's, and the other one only eats dry. We were using instinct high protein kibble (~45% protein) and we've just settled on Dr. Elsey's clean protein duck kibble. It's pretty amazing from a macronutrient perspective (~60% protein, ~90% protein from animal sources). I also like the N&D brand, but I couldn't get their all stages kibble when I needed it for my youngest.
    Also I'm really glad you discussed the regulations because there's a lack of awareness about them that makes me sad. Also glad you called out Susan Thrixton since I'm really appreciative of all the advocacy and investigation she does.

    I think it would be worth doing reviews on meal plan formulation services offered by vet nutritionists.
    I gave up with human-grade cat food considering the quality control issues (i.e., Smalls) and price (i.e., Darwin's), so I decided the best option was to pay a vet nutritionist with experience in raw food to formulate a meal plan for my cat. WAY cheaper (about $1 per day), in the long run, buying my own (human-grade, of course) meats and organs, absolutely no unnecessary ingredients, completely species-appropriate, and my cat gets exactly what she wants texture-wise (she likes stuff ground and wet). The biggest downsides are the time needed for meal prep, freezer space, and struggles finding organ meats at a grocery store (organs are more difficult to store and transport in a way that meets USDA standards so lots of ranchers just opt to turn the organs into biochar or compost).

      Yes! I just started making my cats' food, with a veterinarian recommended recipe, and it's going very well.
      What I don't get is when people who feed their own children are more intimidated by the idea of feeding their cat than their kid! Twinkies and Froot Loops are cool for the human child, but go to Whole Foods for the organic chicken for the cat! It's kind of funny... I don't do it that way.

    Hi Mallory. Thank you for this video! I'm actually already feeding my two cats two of the five pet foods on here. Open Farms Rustic Blend and Raised Right.
    Open Farms, yes, the legumes (low glycemic, for fiber). Not a deal breaker, because I love their sourcing and transparency.
    Raised Right, yes, that spearmint 🙄. You spoke a lot about cats not eating it. Did you and the person on your staff try to gradually transition? I had the same problem. My cats wouldn't eat it by itself. I was ready to send it back. Then remembered that sometimes when introducing a new food we need to transition.
    This is what I did. They liked Open Farm Rustic Blend, all the varieties, from the start. So it's my base. Then I mix in the Raised Right. They say to start with 10% and increase. I started with only 5% because of that spearmint! They ate it! I did that for a few days to help them get used to it, then kept gradually increasing the amount. It took a few weeks, but now I'm up to almost 40%! I also add a small amount of slightly warm water. That's also helpful when transitioning.
    With another cat food that I used to feed them before changing to the Open Farm and the Raised Right foods, there was always some food left in the bowl. But now, when they're done eating, the bowls are completely empty! ❤ They must really like it! 😻😻
    I just wanted to share this if pet parents are having difficulty with their cats or dogs not eating Raised Right. With such a great nutritional profile and quality ingredients, transitioning is worth a try!

  • @abigailhollister6515
    @abigailhollister6515 2 года назад +4

    My cat * loves * Raised Right food (I thought the spearmint might be a problem but it wasn't at all, he dove right in).
    I add couple tablespoons of water to it bc the moisture level in the food as it arrives in the pack is lower than usual, which decreases the cost of it -- and that makes the texture smoother.
    So relieved to finally find a food with almost all vitamins and minerals from whole foods -- never ever using synthetic "vitamin paks" from US industry again if I can help it.

    If your (all about cats) recommendations weren't so good and actually improved my cats life, I'd be a little wary of you(but not super wary.) There is a survey that comes up and literally has "funnel" in the name. I'm thinking the person who takes care of marketing is either really good or really really bad at what they do. I know what a marketing funnel is. It's not necessarily a bad thing but sets off my inner skeptic and makes me curious on what is up. I just wanted to point that out in case you are not aware.
    Your reviews seem fairly objective and really helpful so I subscribed and watch every video you guys put out. I think you put out great content.

      Hi there, thank you so much for the comment. I had to do some digging to figure out where you saw this, and it seems this is the default name our survey platform (Outgrow) uses for surveys hosted on their site. We may use the survey as an email list signup tool at some point, but for now, participants are only being targeted for followups related to the survey. This is a great insight, at any rate, and we're planning to embed the survey on our own site soon, which will mean that it won't say "funnel" in the page title. Hope this explains a bit, and thanks again for the great comment. - Mallory

      Yes I tried smalls and the food came in looking strange like it was curdled. Or freezer burned. And this has happened to other people I know too. So to me it sounds like smalls don't know how to handle their cat food when it comes to storing.

      I haven't had issues with freezer burn, but the packages are impossible to open and I always end up using scissors to get into them. I've had a couple batches where the order was all wrong and one package where the food was a suspiciously dark color. Getting ahold of them was a challenge, but when I eventually did I ended up getting refunded for the suspicious looking packages. No issues currently, but I'll just have to see. I really hope they step up and have better customer support and quality control because my cat loves their food.

    Which Raw food do you recommend for Senior Cats.

    • @janislevy1ify
      @janislevy1ify Месяц назад

      Roxanne, good question! Many Raw pet foods have ground bone as an ingredient. It's a great source of calcium. But older cats are prone to kidney disease and need to eat lower phosphorus foods. There should also be a good calcium/phosphorus ratio. A little more calcium than phosphorus is best for senior cats. Like 1.2/1.
      I really like Fetching Foods. They have options with or without bones. And a lot of other options, as well. I ordered from them first because I didn't want to have to buy 10 lbs or more on the first try. Great ingredients, great sourcing and they even have custom meals available.
      There's one drawback. Prices are very high and shipping is high, too.
      I didn't order a lot, so now I'm almost out. The trial run was a success. Scamper, my 5 year old, loves Raw! Cookie, my 10 year old almost Senior cat, not unless I mix it with another wet food. Gradually transitioning. At about 40% Raw now. I consider that a success, too.
      So now, I'm also looking for another raw food. Viva Raw, which has ground bone would be fine for my 5 year old. But for my 10 year old, I was concerned. So I called to get the percent of phosphorus. The Turkey and Beef are 1.5%. But the other varieties are more. So, since Cookie doesn't have CKD, the Turkey and the Beef ones would be OK. Rabbit has 1.7%. Maybe OK occasionally. You didn't mention CKD. If your cat has CKD (chronic kidney disease), I don't recommend.
      I don't know about other wet raw foods. But I have another possible option for you. Freeze-dried Raw. It's very convenient. No need to store in the freezer. Just add (filtered) water and mix. Dr. Marty's doesn't have ground bone in it. Again, high cost. But it's another option.

    • @cynthiahand7193
      @cynthiahand7193 2 года назад +2

      I was reading your post and I noticed you were saying you feed your cat dry food and you tried can food Fancy Feast your cats refuse to eat it. I have 7 cats and they are picky eaters. I tried fancy feast myself .they either don't want it or they throw up. Cats need meat for them to live a healthy life .they cannot live without meat. Dry food is a bad source for good meat . it has too many carbs in it. Which causes your cat to need to eat more, making you think they really like it.. but because they are not getting the right nutrition they need they will eat more. But not to rule out can't do like dry food. So
      I am on a fixed income, but want my cats health. I've done a lot of research on nutrition and talk to veterinarians and trials and errors . Vets recommend can food . I find Wellness canned cat food comes in a large can like dog food does. so that's a plus it has good ingredients in it you can get it at PetSmart or buy online it's about less than $3 a can. seems like a lot but I use two cans a day. About $5.60 a day. Buy good food lower vet bills . They have chicken recipe chicken and tuna recipe turkey and tuna recipe and beef and chicken recipe. Note a lot of cats don't like turkey but if it has some fish in it or chicken , you have a better chance that they will eat it . Wellness canned cat food it's very moist Pate cat food. Cat need as much water as possible because they naturally don't drink enough water so you need to make sure your cat does drink a lot of fresh water it helps with their kidneys. Can't prefer fresh water or water that is moving because they look at standing water is being not a good source and they don't drink enough of it or won't drink it unless they really have to. This can't be the reason why so many cats die from kidney disease. So getting a cat fountain may help them drink more water. Wellness cat food They also have different textures of cat food. If your cat really don't like Pate. Can cat foods actually has more meat in them than shreds or chunky cat food and more then dry food.. because they need to use fillers to keep the food together. Plus the wellness food is grain-free don't feed cats gluten wheat or corn because it's bad for them another good food is Halo and nuro

    • @cynthiahand7193
      @cynthiahand7193 2 года назад +1

      Nuro is a good can cat food. If you are only feeding dry. Mix can cat food in with dry slowly increase the amount of canned food vs. Dry food overtime until you can get them to eat just the canceled it's okay to give them some dry food but the main diet should be wet can food hope this helps.

    Not sure why Raised Right would include spearmint in the food. It is an odd choice considering most cats don't like anything in the mint family with the exception of catnip.

      Hi Timothy, I wanted to follow up on this. After talking with Braeden Ruud, I learned that the spearmint is added as a whole food source of manganese and potassium. While they didn't say exactly how much spearmint is in the food, they say that it's a small enough amount that it wouldn't cause problems, pointing to the fact that cats have safely eaten this food for 4 years without health issues. The foods are formulated with the oversight of Dr. Karen Becker and pet food formulation expert Steve Brown to ensure that they're nutritionally complete, balanced, and safe for pets.

    • @timothyneiswander3151
      @timothyneiswander3151 2 года назад +1

      @@AllAboutCatsYT Their statement that "cats have safely eaten this food for 4 years without health issues" is debatable. I never suggested mint was unsafe for cats. My implication was that of a desire to eat their product. Which many people have noticed a lack of desire in cats to consume this food. So if you can't get the food into the cats belly to absorb the nutrients then that will cause health issues.
      I was merely suggesting that mint was a poor choice of additives and they should find an alternative if they want to increase sales. I had no idea that mint was something a cat food company would add to their food. Something I need to check for now.
      Most of the cat buddies I have shared my home with over the years, don't like the smell of my breath after I brush my teeth and will be stand-offish and give me grumpy looks when I drink mint tea. I also use mint as a natural deterrent to keep them away from or off of things.
