Thank you for another video. Am getting ready for a kitten with supplies I did order 12 cans of the wellness core. Am looking for another one for variety & keep cost down avoiding dry kibble.
YAY! You featured BOTH brands I was or am using! I had been using Authority ever since Blue Buffalo changed their product line after the company was sold. I've been satisfied with it and the major reason I had to replace it was unavailability. I normally bought 30 (5 oz) cans at a time, 3 cans each of 10 flavors, so a 10 serving supply for 6 cats. Recently it has been scarce on the shelves with multiple flavors missing, so I had to move on and move up once I expended my backup supply. The first phase of the Rawz test went well. I purchased one (5 oz) can each of 12 flavors and each cat got a sample of 1/6th of a can daily for supper, mixed with some dry food to make up a full portion. They had no qualms about any of them, they scarfed everything down and were looking for more. I went ahead and signed up for a Tomlinson's membership and bought 36 cans, 3 each of the 12 flavors, and began feeding a full half-can serving to all 6 of them every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evening. This will allow me to see if any have any digestive issues with the full servings. Once we successfully near the end of this phase, then I'll go ahead and order entire cases of 24 cans of each of 12 flavors. It will cost a fortune but I anticipate the cost will only continue going up if I wait. Rawz seems to have addressed the aluminum can shortage by packaging some of their products in steel cans. While the product is expensive, becoming a Tomlinson's member yields a 10% discount on the prices. Ordering by the case will drop the prices another 4%. I am now subscribed to this excellent channel.
I don't know of you get it in your country. But I use canagan wet chicken cat food for my boy. Its the best food I've bought. Which you can see in the can Its chicken breast 67% and 32% broth with nutrients. He won't eat anything else. I spend around £2.80 a day on 2 tins. Really work checking it out if available to you
I fed my cat the Authority brand chicken pate for a couple months after watching this video and it gave her urinary crystals!!! The vet said it was very high in sodium and NOT to continue feeding it to her. She has since been switched to a urinary care food that she likes way more anyways. Just a warning for anyone in the comments that might wanna try the budget brand!
how much did u feed the food to him though? id think if u switched or mixed the food with some other products itll decrease the sodium but still be economical for u.
@@cyberpunklain It was the only wet food we were feeding her at the time. Her new food (Hills Prescription Urinary Care) is only about 79 cents more per can than the Authority brand so it’s still on the cheaper end of cat foods so I think I’m good just switching it out entirely :) She’s been on her new food for about a month and her appetite is still great (which was our main concern when she started refusing to eat her old food, the vet said it was because she was in pain due to the urinary crystals) so I am hopeful the new food can stay for a good amount of time :)
Thanks 👍 good to know I had a tragic experience with crystal being stuck in male genital a few years ago. I will take your comment too ❤️ your time and attention is appreciated greatly. TakeCare gooddays
I personally don't recommend instinct to anyone. I was feeding my 2 with their canned pate (plus their freeze dried raw as treats, BOTH containing montomilite clay)for a couple months and we found out at a dental cleaning that one of my boys had a UTI. The montomilite clay was the only cause that came to mind. I did my own digging and deemed it an ingredient to be avoided. It was also fairly lucky that we were trying out pretty litter at the time since both of them had started turning the litter blue, yet my other cat's UA came back clear. We are now feeding Tiki Cat After Dark and they love it!
Rawz is based right down the road from where I grew up, in Cape Neddick Maine, nice to know I’m supporting both a local business and some of the best cat food in the industry!
my cats love tiki cat but one of mine is particular about specific lines 😅 she hates it if it’s not their shredded foods and she would rather starve if it’s not chicken or tuna, i got her to eat their mousse line though surprisingly (only chicken though)
I'm on the weruva with my boy it took a bit of expirimenting, but the answer for him is it must have bird in it, and it must be crunchy dry food or a perfectly smooth pate. Wet chunks are not at all acceptable.
We recently stumbled across Reveal brand. The cats absolutely adore the Chicken Breast in Broth. It's grain free with absolutely no carbs or plant material in it. It's a bit expensive at about $1.50 for a 2.47 ounce can, but they devour it. We don't give it to them everyday, more like a treat like Sunday dinner.
I don't think this brand sells any cat food that is a complete cat food. Make sure you check the can. I bought it before and it said it is incomplete and needs to be fed alongside a complete cat food.
@@ashley8321 I’m a new cat owner! Also stumbled across this cat food and made the same observation except it said to be fed with dry food which I don’t plan to do. I do want to make sure she’s receiving all her proper nutrients though, what would make the food not complete??
Thanks for adding Rawz, 3 of my 4 will eat it. For those that dont know, a case can either be 3oz or 5 oz and usually 18 to a case. Was informed by them that a possible variety pack will come out by next year.
I would love to see a series of videos based on urinary issues. The types of urinary issues, the best products (fountains), best dry food and wet food. I know it’s common
I just baught my cat a fountain. Plus I leave water in bowls out in two places in case the electric goes out. Doesn't use the fountain that much. She also has urinary issues. Was on the prescription food. But started vomiting after eating every day. So I switched her to a low protein food. Weruva then the Tiki cat. No issues.
@@craftyfox1959 I didn’t want to do low protein because a cats diet is meant to be carnivorous. In all reality there isn’t a single dry kibble that isn’t garbage and urinary issues result.
@@oklahomafreedom5536 My boy is only about 2 and just healed from his PU surgery. He didn’t get an infection but he blocked up so they had to basically cut off his penis. It was better to pay for this than to pay for him to get unclogged so often and his quality of life was poor.
my 16 year old male cat has been enjoying the Tiki Cat line for a while now. We started by giving him the Velvet Salmon Mousse and he couldn't get enough! He can't have chicken which can make trying other brands tricky. luckily Tiki Cat has a great range of seafood flavours as well! We've tried out the Grill & Aloha variety packs as they are both chicken free and contain different fun flavours & he absolutely loved the brothy/puréed parts but as he's an older boy now chewing is harder & I could feel his frustration when it came to the fishy chunks. he just couldn't chew no matter how small I broke them up.. so I now purée the cans with our blender instead.. 2 months in and he still licks the bowl clean every single time!! I know puréeing the food yourself might seem taxing for some people but it works for us and he is healthy and happy! Fur is nice and shiny, bathroom breaks are healthy and regular, weight is stable & he never refuses a meal. Very pleased overall. I am also interested in trying out Weruva as I've heard it is great for senior cats as well.
Our focus is on texture. My two girls were adopted from two separate rescues during the same week years ago. Both rescues had fed Fancy Feast. Both cats agree that their preference is a shredded texture. So we have compromised with Shredded Chicken and Shredded Turkey options from Weruva and Fancy Feast. My girls are beautiful Seniors now.
Great to see Smalls on the list. My recently diagnosed diabetic cat, was fed SD dry his whole life. When we found him dropping weight, excessively thirsty, and limping, the vet recommended SD m/d wet. At $55 a case, my cat refused to eat it, smelled awful and greasy. We tried so many brands of low carb food before we found Smalls. He LOVES it, literally screams with excitement for it. I love it for the packaging, super easy meal prep (I thaw and dump 2 bags into a glass jar and use a kitchen scale to weigh out portions.) I've had great experiences with the customer service, and their product line is constantly growing. Our meal plan averages out to $4.63/day. Considering prescription food and premium wet (that he hated} was about $5/day I feel that the convenience and quality are well worth it. However, I did need to buy a chest freezer...
@@peterrabbit1234 I only let them thaw halfway. Then flip the bag label side down and saw straight through the middle with a knife. Then I dump into a jar
Hello, I have 7 cats and considering smalls. Cats have varying issues. Three are extremely overweight, one underweight and the rest normal. How many ounces should you feed them daily? They currently are on dry food only but I want to switch them completely. I am clueless as to how much they need. Thank you if you have time to help me
My kitten loves Koha! (Haven't seen many reviews of them, happy that they made the list) She loves their duck paté & shredded duck, beef, lamb & chicken. She's not too crazy about turkey, kangaroo or the poke bowl line. It's not labeled for kittens so I try not to give it to her too often, but I like to break up the monotony of chicken with different proteins 😊
My cats love Tiki cat. I’m not sure if it’s the absolute healthiest option available, but I’ve tried others and they would stop eating them after a few days. Tiki cat seems to be a winner!
With the exception of Open Farm (it was some bad freeze dried dog food actually) and the company's response was to deny, deny, deny....I like this list. I appreciate your effort and the info provided. Thanks.
What was your experience with open farm? Curious because I tried it with my kitties and it gave them horrible diarrhea ! I was convinced it was toxic some how
I love that you post these videos. You’re so helpful. My cat was 17 pounds and I switched to the Tiki cat succulent chicken and he’s now between 11-12pounds. He lost the weight in about 6 months.
Is that the only change that you made? No increased exercise/activity? How old is your cat? What was your cat eating before? Is your cat only eating the Tiki now or do you supplement with some dry food? Just picking your brain because I have a female (about 6-8 years old I think, only had her 1.5 years, her person died and she was surrendered to the humane society by a third party who knew very little about her) who is a few pounds over what the vet would like and I'm trying to figure out what to do. She gets hangry and will seek out and eat things she shouldn't (plastic mostly so I have to make sure there isn't any around) but I also avoid this by feeding her multiple small meals of wet food a day and giving her a few greenies throughout the day to satisfy her need to crunch. She gets dry food at bedtime so that I can sleep. She's not very active or playful, she likes to lay around and sleep a lot. She'll kinda play, mostly by sitting in place and half-heartedly swatting. Your cat's weight loss is impressive, so any help you can give would be much appreciated 😊
@@KatarinaS. I ONLY feed my cat Tiki cat wet food. Succulent chicken, wild salmon and a salmon and chicken mix. I do not work and I stay at home mostly so I’m able to feed him throughout the day. (It’s actually really annoying!) lol. I used to feed my cat Iams, Rachel Ray and Tiki cat hard food. I did research and took him off hard food completely and he just shredded the pounds. My cat is 7 now but I did the diet change at around 5 years old. He is not a very active cat AT ALL! I feed him the larger cans of Tiki cat but it is super expensive. Most humans won’t pay that much for their pet. I’m sure there is a better priced alternative out there but I do know that the Tiki cat is pretty much PURELY PROTEIN! I hope my response makes sense? Let me know if you have anymore questions. 😊
@@amber.cosette one large can! The one that is a step bigger than the 6oz can. I divided the one can to feed it to him 4 meals throughout the day. He shrunk quickly!! I hope this makes sense.
How is Rawz not a more popular brand?!? I bought a couple cans last week along with a few other high quality foods after doing a ton of research. A lot of the other high quality brands I noticed contained either tuna, legumes or a lot of gums. Rawz has none of that! And I personally feel like for the quality, it’s not TOO pricey. And the texture!!! My girl hates shredded or really thick pate. Rawz is a super smooth pate and she loves it. Im so happy I found this brand through your video. I’m so surprised more ppl don’t know about it!
My cats only eat that brand🫶 dry and wet food! I think its the best cat food🙌🏻🙏🏻 it’s a little bit expensive for me because I have 4 cats 😅 but I don’t mind, I just want the best for them🥰
On your budget option you said the protein sources were clearly labeled (no mystery meats) while at the same time pointing at a label that says ocean fish. That is a deal breaker for me because my cat tolerates salmon and tuna fine but often things labeled with vague 'fish' names like ocean fish result in him vomiting quite a bit. I'm still on the hunt for a good budget cat food.
I saw that, too! "Ocean fish" is very vague. I would stay away from any brand that isn't transparent about their ingredients, sourcing, and processing. Makes you wonder, "what are they hiding?" Can't trust a company like that. You may need to pay a little extra for a better pet food, but at least you won't be paying for "who knows what"!
Recently watched a video about a trainer that was feeding her dog a commercial raw diet and found her dog had heavy metals building up in her body because of it. The trainer suspects it was from the protein in the food containing a high amount of organ meat vs muscle meat. Could be where the heavy metals in fishless cat food are coming from as well. She adjusted the dog's diet to have more fiber and less protein to fix the issue.
Oh my gosh! What an amazing coincidence :D Was hoping there were some great new foods this year, remembered all your stellar reviews from the past and BAM! Here's the perfect video, fresh off the Tubes. Thank you so much You're the most thorough cat reviewer and we're so lucky to have your passion about cats!
Hi Mallory! I love your videos, they've helped me a lot with my cats. I'm wondering if you would consider making a video about food/water setups (if they should be nearby or separated, approaches to feeding multiple cats, etc.), and also your thoughts/advice on how often to feed cats (timed meals vs. free-feeding)? This is something I've played around with since adopting my 2nd cat who loves wet food, while my other cat isn't too enthusiastic about it. I would definitely value your advice on the topic of feeding routines. Thanks!
for multiple cats it depends on their personality. if they fight over food n r very territorial over it they should be fed in different rooms with the door closed! generally if u feed dry food u should ALWAYS have a water bowl. fountains help cats to keep hydrated bc its more engaging than just still water i guess. mixing wet food and dry food together will help to keep ur cat hydrated; an alternative is to hydrate ur kibble. some cats prefer eating on the ground while mine needs to have a little guiding for little sneaky snacks i give her 😭... a little bit (i mean like a pea sized amount) of rice, cheese, whatever u have isnt bad for the cat usually unless they have an allergy.
Great video. I switched my 7 year old cat to completely wet food. He won’t touch pate and is pretty picky. He loves Tiki after dark chicken assortment & Tiki Aloha!
@@yhaliak.1511 Here's my insight: While most cats will prefer one brand of food over another, I've found that they actually prefer _any_ food to none at all. They all make the switch.
Bought Fetching Foods for a trial run since no minimum purchase required. Had to mix it with a another wet food to gradually transition. Got to almost 50%. I've run out. I think the food is great, but way too expensive for me and high shipping cost. If you can afford, great! They have a lot of options, such as with ground bone or boneless. Boneless has lower phosphorus which is better for senior cats since cats are more prone to kidney disease. However, bone can be ok if it's further down on the ingredient list and no more than 1.5% or even 1.6%, if no urinary issues. But some raw has higher levels. So now that I've run out, I'm researching others. I'd considered Viva Raw, but since has ground bone, I called the company for percentages. I got them, then found discrepancies afterwards. Also, the woman I spoke with seemed impatient with me. Mmmm..... It's a no go. For a senior cat anyway. Percentages were high. I'm considering freeze-dried raw now as a possibility. I already use Dr. Marty's Nature's Feast unhydrated as a "kibble substitute", just for two very small snacks twice a day to somewhat satisfy their "kibble cravings". They love it!!! They get so excited when I open the bag, they jump up and down!!! 😂 It is very balanced, species appropriate, great ingredients. Although bone is a great source of calcium, egg shell is used instead. Which is better for seniors. (But like I said bone can be ok if percentage of phosphorus isn't too high.) I may use it as a hydrated meal sometimes. Two other brands I liked from research, but haven't tried are Simple Food Project and Steve's. Also Small Batch, which I feed sometimes instead of Dr. Marty's - has ground bone, but some varieties have lower phosphorus levels.
Tried Tiki Senior. My cat left the shreds and only took the broth. But they always do that. So back to Rawz we went. I use Rawz dry too. 75% wet 25 % dry. But Tiki has so many options. They have such a fun variety.
Hurray!! Recently I switched my cats to Wellness Chicken Pate and they seem to really love it! I just add a little water for extra hydration and they lick their bowls clean :P I noticed that by buying the larger 12.5 oz cans, I can lower my overall cost by a bit, so I started doing that. It doesn't consists of any potatoes or other grains but I do see that they add some cranberries for "Urinary health", so I hope that works out. Also, really excited for you guys to hit 100k!!
I've tried the Wellness brand. It looked pretty good. Can't remember if I tasted it myself but I probably did. I taste all my cats food after seeing a millionaire eat one of her dog biscuits. If the food is premium enough humans can eat it too and yes I found the cheaper brands taste disgusting while the more expensive brand taste palatable. Also you can't feed the cat the same food everyday but Wellness has a bunch of flavours too choose from 😍
@@midwestmasocist Well cats eat raw meat in the wild. They even sell raw meat at the Japanese store, that sashimi or whatever. So if your cats food taste rancid you should go for a better brand. The most expensive is like $2 a tin anyway. I hate it when people cheap out and just grab the same box of whatever and feed it to the cat every day. But you should also be wary of switching brands all the time because it can upset the cats stomach.
Thank you! These product reviews are so helpful! I would love to see new versions of the best wet foods for kittens with the lab reviews since I’ve been using Whole Earth Farms Kitten Recipe based on your recommendation. It would be so nice to have the “Best of…” lists for wet food based on ages (like kittens, seniors, etc.), but also best wet food lists for chronic diarrhea, IBD, diabetes, etc. I know it’s a lot of work and research so thank you so much! I didn’t know as much, unfortunately, when I had my two previous kitties but feel like I’m doing better with my two new ones now that I’ve found your channel. Everything from insurance to litter to nail clippers - your videos are so helpful!
Thank you for this review! What other paté cat food is low in phosphorus? My cat hates Weruva. He's eating Soulistic Chicken paté but I'm ready to switch if this is high in phosphorus. Thank you!
I currently feed my a cat wet food from Instinct, Tiki cat, and Nulo. Instinct has pate style food, Tiki cat after dark has a lot of moisture and is most of the time is shredded style (i usually get the chicken, chicken and lamb, chicken and beef). And Nulo has slice styles and i usually get beef and rainbow trout, turkey etc.
I have been using Open Farm for about a year and all three of my cats are kinda over it. They will not eat it anymore and wont even bother eating the dry kibble either. I really appreciate you creating this video because I am a little lost to do as far as wet food. My vet keeps recommending Science Diet and again my cats will not touch it.
Your videos are so helpful!! I’m a new cat mom and I’m wanting to switch my cat to a wet food only and throw out the kibble because he doesn’t seem to get enough water intake. I’ve learned so much from watching your videos on what to avoid and what to get!!
As a general rule my cats don't seem to like pate. Also, they seem to love dry food, but I refuse to feed them dry food because on the rare occasion they do get dry food intermittently added to their normal wet food diet they have a tendency to vomit it back up. As kittens they would eat the Royal Canine kitten food wet pate but now that they are a year old, they seem to prefer the Core Signature Selects shredded chicken or turkey. I order most of their food online from a subscription service that discounts purchases. Another of their favorite foods is the Nutro cuts in gravy packets, again chicken and turkey. I don't recall ever having a cat who could tolerate any seafood at all. One of my subscription's sub'd the chicken for some kind of sea food which they ate like it was the best thing ever then immediately regurgitated it back on to my carpet!!!! I know that cats are carnivores, and I don't understand why so many foods available have added sweet potato, peas and other vegetables! I have 2 indoor and 1 outdoor cat (that I wish would tolerate the indoors) and spend upwards of $400 a month on food for them. I love my cats and would spend any amount necessary to give them the best diet possible, but I am so confused about what is best for them and torn by what they will actually eat. It's almost like trying to get a toddler to eat his vegetables! It a constant war!!!! Also, no cat I have ever had would eat the Wellness, Tiki, Weruva, or Instinct, brand of cat food. They refuse to eat beef, lamb. or rabbit. They seem to only want or tolerate poultry.
We have 2 kittens. Our Siamese Lynx point has many allergies and stomach sensitivities. The only canned food we have been able to feed him is Wellness Kitten Core Chicken & Turkey Pate. Our Vet said Fish is the #1 allergen in most cat food & said extensive studies have shown this. He said giving a kitten food with fish can cause severe allergies as the reach adulthood and it can manifest in many different ways ( Hair loss, bloating, rashes, vomiting and more) We have literally tried every canned food out there that didn't contain fish. He said fish oils like salmon were fine as oils don't contain the proteins which cause the allergies. We tried a grain free 95% protein food and it was way too hard on him.
Good idea, there are a lot of ridiculous cat diets online (2 cups rice, add a cup of meat--yikes!). I think it takes a lot of knowledge to do this well. Though you might look into a premix like Feline Instincts or TC feline. They are essentially mixes for raw meat but you can cook it if you follow directions. It takes the meat as well as liver and adds vitamins, egg shell powder, etc.
I am a new cat mom and have two sisters who like and eat the same things, and I boil strips of chicken and liver and hearts in water, which only takes 5-10 minutes and I then make rice in the chicken water and add a little rice to their food. I mix this in with their canned food or sometimes on its own. I also give them a little dry food. I love knowing they're getting good protein.
Thank you SO much for doing these. This has really been a life savor. I’m so sad that nom nom discontinued their cat food. I was able to purchase their last few batches for a long while until they ran out of inventory and now I’m back here to find the next best thing. Can’t thank you enough!
This is great . I see Feline Natural’s pate didn’t make it , just wondering why ? I ‘m hoping it’s good since my cat luvs it . Also is there anyway of testing out these foods for your cat before buying a case? My pet store doesn’t carry most of these and my cat is sooo picky. Thank you.
Our kids like Ziwi Lamb and Ziwi Venison, but I saw Rawz for the first time a while back and it went over really well with them, so thanks for all of the extra info that you wouldn't normally get just looking at the can in the store. I'll consider Rawz again since I'm a bit taken aback by the Chinese acquisition of Ziwi. I have to think that it's still made in NZ? The change to Ziwi, BTW, came about when I noticed that Instinct seemed to have a higher- than-average rate of recalls, so we're pretty much done with them. Thanks Mallory!
excellent video, i always really appreciate the way you break things down and completely explain your selection process. genuinely one of the best channels and i always reccomend to anyone looking for cat info.
Thanks for recommendations! Just a suggestion: when sending samples for analysis provide the company with a generic name like cat food sample# 5, or something. The lab doesn’t need to know what exact food brand/type they are testing at the moment. Eliminates potential bias
Thanks Mallory for the honest and invaluable reviews of the best wet cat food! From my experiences, Tiki Cat is the best of all cat canned food and it’s made in human grade facilities, I love Tiki Cat the most and it’s certainly the best brand. I also love that they have zero carbohydrates! 👍✌️😄😺😸
This is the best, most researched video of its kind, Thank you so much, this was amazing, thank you for including Ziwi, we had no idea it was high in carbs. Just wow, you have lab results and everything. Now this is an informative video.
My cat really loves Smalls, but I agree that their customer service can be hit or miss. You can only email them and when I recently tried to send an email, it bounced back because their inbox was full. I called the number on their website and it said phone calls must be by appointment open. Luckily it prompted a text thread so I could at least text with a customer service rep. I had some questions about food discoloration is a few of the packets. After looking at the pictures and asking some questions, the rep just issued me a refund, which was kind of strange. I had to clarify whether or not the food was okay, and they said it was. But it was just odd to be given a refund without much comment. I'm going to continue ordering Smalls for now, but I really hope they step up their customer service.
My experience is the same. My cats generally like the food a lot, they’ve been eating it for a long time, but the customer service is a real turn off. The company really needs to do something instead of just offering excuses.
Wow, I’ve had zero issue with their customer service but yes, I do have to wait for someone to get back to me. I’m fine with that and know it’s a small company. I’ve had discoloration too… rather, the food color can vary but I’m ok with that. Apparently the recipes are the same even if the coloring and packaging can vary.
I still think the Nulo Freestyle is by far the best budget option. There are plenty of local pet food stores (at least in the greater los angeles area) that offer a 12 pack case of the 12.5oz cans for around $33. This would put it at about $2.75/can or $0.22/oz, and it is a bit cheaper than Authority, and Nulo seems to be a better overall brand and have slightly better ingredients. If anyone is on a budget, I highly recommend Nulo, but try to find it locally! Edit 2022-06-08: Prices have gone up way too much! Nulo now (bought most recently in May 2022) costs around $45 after taxes. I checked my receipts, and Nulo cost $33 just as recently as March 2022. In the span of less than two months, Nulo increased prices by over 25%!! I may now have to consider other brands for something a bit more budget friendly, but I still like Nulo.
Have you tried Reveal brand? If so what's your take on it? I have been trying to avoid cat food with sunflower seed oil in it, because I read that it's an inflammatory in cat's. I don't know if that's true or not, but my cat does have a tendency to regurgitate most cat food and avoid patte's like the plague, so that makes food shopping for him incredibly challenging.
As always, awesome job and very thorough! I know you have reviewed The Honest Kitchen's dehydrated cat food before but was wondering if you will be open to reviewing their wet cat food. Thanks again for these great reviews!
My cat has digestive issues and I tried Darwin’s. Really worked well for my cat. I recently found Souly Raw. It has lots of novel proteins options. I doesn’t have anything but protein, muscle meat and organs all from the same source. I get from Hare Today a nutrient mix to add to the meat. I use it with my homemade cat food as well. My kitty does good with Tiki Cat if I don’t give it to her daily. Weruva seems to be tolerated well. Thanks for your suggestions. I’m gonna look into Rawz
Wondering what your opinion is on Purina's new "Pro Plan Prime Plus"? Meant for cats aged 7+ and "proven to extend the life" of cats. I recently put my 2 older cats on it, in the seafood variety flavors. They love it and they look so much healthier than ever (coat, etc)...but I don't see Purina Pro Plan anywhere near any top/best cat food lists on the web 😬 They eat the canned/wet, btw.
Recently been trying new wet cat food because one of my kitties has early stage CKD. He hasn't liked anything until today when I had him try the Raws chicken pate. I also bought the one you recommended for seniors with low phosphorus. Will be finding out soon enough if he likes that one.
My elderly cat recently died from CKD. I kept him at a good quality of life for over 7 years on a diet of 50% Royal Canin kidney food (wet) and 50% regular brand Weruva, which has LOTS of choices with low phosphorus. He absolutely loved all the varieties of Weruva, which I rotated regularly. And Weruva's website publishes ALL nutritional information about every single variety of food they make.
Neither of my cats like Weruva unfortunately but I did finally have success with my kitty with CKD. I tried raw, bonelss chicken thighs mixed with water and EZ Complete - a mix made with egg shells instead of bones so it's low phosphorous. He's eating that and some other wet food (Rawz) and has been eating a lot lately and hasn't seemed to need the sub q fluids lately. He even got the zoomies the other day. Just going to keep my eye on him and see how he does.
Hi Malorie, Thank you for your super informative videos that has helped me greatly since I adopted my first furbaby. I swear by your videos and always look into them for reference. Could you do a review on Petco brand foods?, specifically their Easy Digestion and Weightloss line?
my base wet food is weruva/soulistic, but i feed a lot of different brands, proteins, textures. I am always glad to see it on the list! makes me feel like i am feeding well, within my budget
We agree about Koha’s limited ingredient rabbit. We have a kitty with major vomiting and digestive issues and this is THE only food he is willing to eat and is able to keep down. He still has flare ups, but we truly believe this food has saved his life. This may sound dramatic, but it is 100% true.
Currently feeding Open Farm as the base food which I mix some "gently cooked" into. My cats eat all the varieties. When they're done, completely empty bowls! I like to rotate their foods. So did a little research. Koha looked pretty good.
I did not want a cat 'til I found Mallory's website. I built cabins in the north woods and embrace wild life, consequently, contracted Lyme disease. I needed to control the primary carrier of the disease, white footed mice. I knew I needed a cat. Thanks to Mallory, I now a have a super well cared for, working cat named, Mallory.
my sweet precious kitty ONLY ate fancy feast wet canned food (especially shrimp) and had no health issues at all for 21 years. she wouldn’t eat anything else. she started getting sick right after the shots required to travel outside the US to another country at 21 yrs young. her health quickly deteriorated after the shots and now became an angel. fancy feast worked so well for her for 21 years. I called her granny coco by then but she looked like a beautiful young kitty with silky fur. 💖 i hope they are not changing the formula. i wouldn’t have fed her anything else. When i travelled long term with her to another country where you can not get fancy feasts, i packed my suitcase with month’s supply of fancy feast. i hope one of your precious kitties will join the healthy live long fancy feast diet 💖💕but avoid the risky shots 🚫💉
Hello! Thank you so much for your reviews! They are so helpful. Please, could you make a review for Carnilove can cat food? Thank you so much! Best regards! ♥️
Hi! Sure, we'll consider it. In the meantime, you might appreciate our written review of this brand on the All About Cats website: allaboutcats.com/carnilove-cat-food-review
My two cats totally hate smalls. Which is a pity, because the food looks terrific. They are all over the Authority - but PetSmart is the only place you can get it (it's their in house brand). Right now you just can't get Authority - there really is a nationwide shortage of Pet Food.
I have a very senior cat, she is 19, she didn't like senior food, she likes Friskies. She is getting skinny, the Vet said nothing wrong with her blood work. The kidneys and liver are going bad. She has all her teeth, and still jumps on the sofa, and windows. Sometimes cheap food is all they will eat. Its keeping her alive.
Thank you for doing in depth reviews like this! You really save us so much time doing the research! One of my cats actually has a chicken allergy and she is eating Rawz rabbit recipe! So far so great and vet recommended too 😊
Now that the Authority has altered it's ingredients I'm wondering if it's still a good option? Chicken broth is listed first now before chicken. It also now includes 7th - Dried plain beet pulp, 8th - Flax seed. Anyone else have an opinion? Really appreciate your excellent videos!
Compared to the gums you'll see in other wet foods, tapioca starch is a much less controversial ingredient. It could spike your cat's blood sugar, but the amount in the food is so low that it wouldn't present an issue in that area.
Hey Shaun, thanks for mentioning that! I've been working on this video for a while and wasn't aware of the change before publishing-sorry about that! Both of these changes seem like moves in the right direction, and though the guaranteed analysis is still the same, I'd be interested in re-testing the food to see if this change affects the heavy metals or nutrient levels of individual batches. Thanks again for commenting!
@@AllAboutCatsYT Certainly no need to apologize, I can only imagine how crazy it is to keep up with all the information. 🙂 I wanted to add one more thing about the new recipe: I noticed that Dicalcium Phosphate is new and relatively high on the ingredient list, so I contacted Instinct regarding the phosphorus. It went up significantly from 1.3% to 1.8% (DMB). Just thought that would be of interest for those concerned with the phosphorus levels. Thanks for all your hard work!
Interesting! I had fed Instinct for years - it kept my senior cat’s kidney values stable after she was diagnosed with CKD. But their kitten food landed my kitten in the ER for GI issues (that she has never experienced again since switching to Weruva). If they’ve changed their recipe, I wonder if it is safe to try them again. It’s definitely a struggle to find healthy, affordable cat food.
Great reviews! Love that you sent them to a lab. Would love to see a taste testing w/your cats. As we all know, no matter how great the ingredients or nutritional value, if they ain’t eatin it, it all goes out the window! I probably went through 20 different cat foods when my cat developed an allergy to turkey in her older years.
Excellent video, as always. I feed my cat Weruva Nine Livers and Paw-lickin’ Chicken, along with Dr. Marty Nature’s Feast freeze-dried raw cat food (prepared with filtered water). I alternate between his three daily meals.
Yay! Dr. Marty's Natures Feast is what I've been using unhydated as a "kibble substitute". I only feed it as as very small snack twice a day because although nutritious, species appropriate, very healthy ingredients, it's still a dry food unhydrated. It's just to satisfy their "kibble cravings". I also feed them two wet meals a day and even add a little filtered water and broth to the wet food. So they're getting plenty of hydration. I like to rotate the different varieties, too. And wow! They get sooo excited when I open the Dr. Marty's bag. They jump up and down! 😂😻😻 As much as I like it, it's too pricey for me to use hydrated as a meal. So I'm looking at some other brands that "might" be more affordable. Simple Food Project (they have sample bundles available to try the food, not free, but free shipping for them). And Steve's. I spoke with someone at Steve's today. Very impressed.
What Ive seen about those generic brands is that are loaded with sodium and the gravy has so much fat. Some people said their cats went a bit crazy whole esting that brand 😮😢
We tried Nom Nom for cats this winter. It looked and smelled good but my cat would not touch it. I ended up donating a month and a half supply to my local shelter. The quality seemed great - my cat can be picky, though - so I’m surprised it has been discontinued.
I'm sorry that it came across like that, Neal. I know I responded to your other comment on the dry food video, but I want to clarify that my cats did taste-test all of the foods. I cut out their reactions for brevity and because I don't think it's the most important factor when evaluating a food (what one cat thinks may be very different from another cat's impression), but I understand that people do want to hear about those experiences. To be clear, my cats both adored Smalls, and my cat Wessie was a fan of the Rawz cat food. They didn't love but would eat most of the others, except for the Ziwi venison and Koha rabbit food.
Would you ever consider doing a breakdown of just Purina Pro wet food types? There’s so many different ones and the ingredients appear good with some of them but idk about lab testing.
I don't recommend any food from Purina! Big box brands such as Purina have too many carbs, are not species appropriate, have nefarious ingredients such as meat by-products, carageenan, etc., and the "balanced nutrition" is mainly from synthetics. Many cats and dogs have died or have gotten very ill from such foods. 😢
My local pet store has a few of these brands. Of the literally dozens of varieties tried, my cat will eat ONE of them (Wellness complete turkey and salmon pate smooth loaf). She used to eat two different wet foods each day (from different brands) but the formula changed on one of them Purrfect Bistro Surf and Turf pate became Merrick Surfin and Turfin Recipe. The pate became a dry brick.
Thank you so much for all your videos. Unfortunately, I had a bad experience with Smalls cat food. Just like you said, the subscription and customer services have been the worst experience I've ever had. I think I'll try Rawz.

Thank you for another video. Am getting ready for a kitten with supplies I did order 12 cans of the wellness core. Am looking for another one for variety & keep cost down avoiding dry kibble.
Thanks for a top 10 video on cat food 😊. How about top 10 treats?
Really work checking it out if available to you
What happened to Hilks Science Diet, Pro Plan...ones I've heard of ...Thank you ...pate is no ...stew kinds ! Yes 👍
😬 Thanks for sharing this
how much did u feed the food to him though? id think if u switched or mixed the food with some other products itll decrease the sodium but still be economical for u.
@@mikaylabuan9207 oooh i see ty
Tikki Cat keeps my 12 yr old kitty happy💜
Rawz is based right down the road from where I grew up, in Cape Neddick Maine, nice to know I’m supporting both a local business and some of the best cat food in the industry!
I bought TIKI CAT's tuna, whitefish and pumpkin. Apparently our cats would rather starve than eat it. Thank you for all the great info you provide.
Same with mine. They are not fans of the fish but they do love the chicken.
Mine too. He likes the Petco brand wet food (Whole-hearted) and Wellness Pate food, cheap vs expensive, but not mid-price Tiki.
my cats love tiki cat but one of mine is particular about specific lines 😅 she hates it if it’s not their shredded foods and she would rather starve if it’s not chicken or tuna, i got her to eat their mousse line though surprisingly (only chicken though)
I tried tiki a couple of years ago with my cat and she hated it too
I'm on the weruva with my boy it took a bit of expirimenting, but the answer for him is it must have bird in it, and it must be crunchy dry food or a perfectly smooth pate.
We feed our cat this brand as well. She loves it so much.
I just found this and the cats seem to like it so far! Have yours been eating it for a long time? Have you noticed any changes
I don't think this brand sells any cat food that is a complete cat food. Make sure you check the can. I bought it before and it said it is incomplete and needs to be fed alongside a complete cat food.
What about Sodium?
@@ashley8321 I’m a new cat owner! Also stumbled across this cat food and made the same observation except it said to be fed with dry food which I don’t plan to do. I do want to make sure she’s receiving all her proper nutrients though, what would make the food not complete??
Thanks for adding Rawz, 3 of my 4 will eat it. For those that dont know, a case can either be 3oz or 5 oz and usually 18 to a case. Was informed by them that a possible variety pack will come out by next year.
Amazon has a variety pack.
I would love to see the best picks for urinary safe cat food as its such a huge issue for so many cats!
She mentioned that the weruva chicken fricassee has low phosphorus which is easier on the kidneys.
@@OllieT123 thanks!
Me too!

@@oklahomafreedom5536 yes so if there are any supplements or anything she can explore so I don’t have to, that would be great!
my 16 year old male cat has been enjoying the Tiki Cat line for a while now.
My cats need shredded or minced in gravey lol I’m glad fancy feast working out because that’s all I can get right now
Great to see Smalls on the list.
How do you open the packages?? I find it impossible to open without a knife
@@peterrabbit1234 I only let them thaw halfway. Then flip the bag label side down and saw straight through the middle with a knife. Then I dump into a jar
Love Smalls, and she does too. Their customer support is great and their product is superior in my opinion.
I was convinced it was toxic some how
For anyone having issues with the pop tops, and opening the lids (I have arthritic hands), an electric can opener works perfectly.
Yes it does 🙂
I love that you post these videos.

Yay!!!! Can you do a specific one for kittens? Wet and dry maybe for kittens?
Recently watched a video about a trainer that was feeding her dog a commercial raw diet and found her dog had heavy metals building up in her body because of it. The trainer suspects it was from the protein in the food containing a high amount of organ meat vs muscle meat. Could be where the heavy metals in fishless cat food are coming from as well. She adjusted the dog's diet to have more fiber and less protein to fix the issue.
Very much appreciated. Health is everything. Long, healthy lives!

My cat will only eat dry food. So I mix the dry food with water. So she has to lap up a bowl of water to get to her kibble.
Great video. I switched my 7 year old cat to completely wet food. He won’t touch pate and is pretty picky. He loves Tiki after dark chicken assortment & Tiki Aloha!
would you be able to give insight on how you made the switch? i’m having a heck of a time with my 2 yr old😂
@@yhaliak.1511 Here's my insight: While most cats will prefer one brand of food over another, I've found that they actually prefer _any_ food to none at all. They all make the switch.
Hi Mallory, Can you Recommend some Commercial Raw food for my Senior Cat.I don't feel comfortable making homemade Raw food for my Peanut.
Are you still doing rawz?
Also you can't feed the cat the same food everyday but Wellness has a bunch of flavours too choose from 😍
Research phosphate binders like Calcium carbonate ie TUMS...in regard to an old cat with CKD...
@@jhowardsupporter you're braver than I am lol 😂
My cat hates pate style, chicken, and salmon. I've been feeding him the Nulo beef & rainbow trout and beef & mackerel.
I use the same with the addition of solid gold food instead of tiki cat foods
Thank you I am so impressed with the thoroughness of your research, and the cost per day calculations, very informative. Thank you.
Glad you appreciate all of that, Jacquie! Thank you so much for stopping by.

Thanks, Amanda! Glad you're here.
Can you tell us the nutrient composition (phosphorus and sodium)? Also can you tell us which ones do not have the vitamin packs?
Thinking of getting a cat and your video’s really help thanks :)
She's great. Also Senior Cat Wellness has a lot of great content about health and behavior (for cats of all ages)
I like you. You give a nice balance of technical information and telling me what to buy.
Do you have any opinions on N&D? Specifically the urinary line
You should do an episode on what is the best way to do homemade cat food.
I’ve been waiting for a new video like this !!!!
Thank you :) ❤️
This is great . I see Feline Natural’s pate didn’t make it , just wondering why ? I ‘m hoping it’s good since my cat luvs it . Also is there anyway of testing out these foods for your cat before buying a case? My pet store doesn’t carry most of these and my cat is sooo picky. Thank you.
Our kids like Ziwi Lamb and Ziwi Venison,
but I saw Rawz for the first time a while
back and it went over really well with them,
so thanks for all of the extra info that you
wouldn't normally get just looking at the can
in the store. I'll consider Rawz again since I'm
a bit taken aback by the Chinese acquisition
of Ziwi. I have to think that it's still made in NZ?
The change to Ziwi, BTW, came about when I
noticed that Instinct seemed to have a higher-
than-average rate of recalls, so we're pretty
much done with them. Thanks Mallory!
Yes, it's still made in New Zealand.
excellent video, i always really appreciate the way you break things down and completely explain your selection process. genuinely one of the best channels and i always reccomend to anyone looking for cat info.
Aww, thank you for the kind words! Grateful to have your support.
I love your channel! Thanks for the great content!
Thanks for recommendations! Just a suggestion: when sending samples for analysis provide the company with a generic name like cat food sample# 5, or something. The lab doesn’t need to know what exact food brand/type they are testing at the moment. Eliminates potential bias
Good point! Thanks.
Thanks for the helpful information 👍 🐈
Thanks Mallory for the honest and invaluable reviews of the best wet cat food! From my experiences, Tiki Cat is the best of all cat canned food and it’s made in human grade facilities, I love Tiki Cat the most and it’s certainly the best brand. I also love that they have zero carbohydrates! 👍✌️😄😺😸
I’m glad you mentioned Koha. I discovered it when my one kitty was having digestive issues and was only able to digest rabbit.
Also finally someone mentioned the provenance line of Ziwi. People always mention their original formulas. My cats love their provenance line.
Yay! It's wonderful to hear that the recommendation lined up with your experience. Thank you for commenting!
I think they went through some kind of shortage for a while, I think the price has gone back down a little bit, at least on Chewy auto ship.
Yes I feed my cat that I sure hope it’s healthy
As always, awesome job and very thorough! I know you have reviewed The Honest Kitchen's dehydrated cat food before but was wondering if you will be open to reviewing their wet cat food. Thanks again for these great reviews!
any reviews on snappy tom or happy cat? cheers
Is there any wet cat food, apart from prescription food, that's appropriate for renal cats? Mine does not like the prescription food.
We have a few recommendations here: allaboutcats.com/best-cat-food-for-kidney-disease
I appreciate your videos they are definitely helpful. What do you think about the cat food brands Hills, Merrick, Weruva, and Pure Bites
Just going to keep my eye on him and see how he does.
have you looked into Nulo? Looking at the ingredients it seems comparable to these brands but what do you think?
I've come to really like it! It's a great budget option.
Hi Malorie, Thank you for your super informative videos that has helped me greatly since I adopted my first furbaby. I swear by your videos and always look into them for reference. Could you do a review on Petco brand foods?, specifically their Easy Digestion and Weightloss line?
Will consider it! Thank you for the comment and kind words.
my base wet food is weruva/soulistic, but i feed a lot of different brands, proteins, textures. I am always glad to see it on the list! makes me feel like i am feeding well, within my budget
Is it better to serve wet food room temperature or direct from fridge. And how long is most wet food good out of fridge.
Room temperature is ideal; you can warm it up by adding some warm water. You can leave it out for about 4 hours.
I just ordered the Koha sampler. Hoping it helps my senior kitty who is doing poorly.
We agree about Koha’s limited ingredient rabbit. We have a kitty with major vomiting and digestive issues and this is THE only food he is willing to eat and is able to keep down. He still has flare ups, but we truly believe this food has saved his life. This may sound dramatic, but it is 100% true.
That's great to know-thanks for sharing!
Glad to hear you found a food he can stomach 🙂
koha is seriously some of the best stuff you can give cats.
Gary, it's an honor. All the best to you and your new mouser.
my sweet precious kitty ONLY ate fancy feast wet canned food (especially shrimp) and had no health issues at all for 21 years. she wouldn’t eat anything else. she started getting sick right after the shots required to travel outside the US to another country at 21 yrs young. her health quickly deteriorated after the shots and now became an angel. fancy feast worked so well for her for 21 years.
Yes, Authority's availability is limited. I was able to find some in a local PetSmart, but it's not consistent.
So far so great and vet recommended too 😊
👍 Your reviews are over the top. Thank you.
Hello everybody. Can I have your opinion on Sheba wet cat food?
Here's our review of Sheba: ruclips.net/video/06I1ilY8zzI/видео.html&
Hey, what's your take on tapioca starch in the Rawz formula?
Compared to the gums you'll see in other wet foods, tapioca starch is a much less controversial ingredient. It could spike your cat's blood sugar, but the amount in the food is so low that it wouldn't present an issue in that area.
Try weruva ..my baby loves it ...
Thank You, Mallory! Very thorough and honest.
Can you please share links or info on where you purchase your bowls ?!
Most of the bowls shown in this video are reviewed here: ruclips.net/video/HKPPscUkRos/видео.html&
Fantastic information-thanks!
FYI, Instinct has changed their recipe by changing the fish oil to tuna and by removing the clay. Does this affect your opinion on it?
I'm sorry, Neal. Will keep this in mind for future videos.
As much as I like it, it's too pricey for me to use hydrated as a meal. So I'm looking at some other brands that "might" be more affordable. Simple Food Project (they have sample bundles available to try the food, not free, but free shipping for them). And Steve's. I spoke with someone at Steve's today. Very impressed.
I’d love to see the fancy fest broths line reviewed. Not the highest quality food I know, but the only wet food I can get my cat to eat
What Ive seen about those generic brands is that are loaded with sodium and the gravy has so much fat. Some people said their cats went a bit crazy whole esting that brand 😮😢
my cat won’t eat fancy feast it causes her to blow ass :(
@@shelbypowley7460dude same 😂
We tried Nom Nom for cats this winter.
I have been successful with Purina Pro Plan essentials canned food. It’s the one that gets shopped for the most on shelves
Awesome, informative video! Thank you so much!!
The pate became a dry brick.
great content! Thank you!
Glad you liked it, Shona!
Thank you so much for all your videos. Unfortunately, I had a bad experience with Smalls cat food. Just like you said, the subscription and customer services have been the worst experience I've ever had. I think I'll try Rawz.
Fantastic video. Many thanks.
Have you heard of RedFord Naturals brand? Can you please do a review on them? 🙏🏼🙏🏼🤗
We'll consider it! Thanks, Stephanie.
Thank you so much for sharing that beautiful topic❤️❤️
Hi Mallory, Could you Please do a review on Purina Friskies Glazed & Infused Wet cat food.
We'll consider it!
