Nobody wants to see armed police on British streets but the situation is forced upon us by those who use violence to achieve their aims. The officers who carry firearms have my full support and total respect.
There are thousands of ex infantry soldiers, who have done many many hours of this exact training. And have also did this for real on many occasions. Lots of them/us would gladly, volunteer to be re-trained. And for those that pass training and all other tests and evaluations. Many would happily join as a special armed officer, or civil defence force. It would increase the police copacity as we could even be sent out with an officer. So they can then go single handed. It would also cost very little, as pay would only be paid on duty days. Similar to TA. We know this will never happen. But it would be good if the government did something sensible for once!
I feel bad for police officers who would be in this situation because they have a few mini-seconds to decide if someone needs taking out or if they aren’t a threat but the rest of the world has hours and days to decide if they made the right decision

Rishi Rai they’re called the Gendarmes, they’re a military police that cover large areas with a small amount of people. Just like how the Brits do it. U wouldn’t of seen the GIGN and if u did u wouldn’t of know it was them as they’re the special forces and have no specific identifiers so they don’t get targeted
Well considering there are over 5000 armed police operations in London alone each year (about 13 per day on average) with over 80% being by ARVs on routine patrol duties, not specialist firearms teams, they will gain experience quickly. By the end of their first year they will have more experience of live ops than most squaddies get their entire career.

This is a complete different world from the SAS though. Plus being trained to be an armed officer in the UK is actually something that's pretty hard to do, and should be respected.
@@ciaranbrk That's incorrect, SAS hardly ever deploy in public. In a issue like the Iranian Embassy, yes. SAS will deploy. However to any other calls around London or wherever, Armed Police deploy. Then if it's worse CTSFO deploy.
I am British and I like the system. We have obviously done something right, we have very low gun deaths and police have killed a very small number of people. Part of the difference is that in Britain guns are on the most part illegal and thus criminals can’t get hold of them, ie police don’t need guns so therefore it is sensible to not equip all officers with guns. It works for us.
If in Britain if guns are on the most part illegal I would think that would only stop those who are law-abiding from getting them I would imagine. The fact that they are illegal wouldn't really figure in the thinking of a criminal, assuming of course that criminals could in some way still get access to guns which may indeed be more difficult because of reduced availability on a 'black market' so to speak.

i couldn't do a job like that, i just cant kill to save my life, but i would fight to try to survive. i would feel like a murder, so its just as well i am not in that position, but i could nurse the injured. if i was in a scenario where i came upon someone injuring attacking someone, i could not run away, and i have intervened in the past, but its so hard to kill!

The police need to get more ex-forces into their firearms teams, it would beat these muppets that can’t fire 5.56 without hitting the ceiling. Half the stocks aren’t adjusted properly for their draw lengths, and there’s a lack of weapon handling on most of these officers
yes and no. HK do have multiple variants which include carbine versions of the base rifle, however specifically the HK 416 is an assault rifle which closely resembles something like an M4/AR-15.
I don't think that every police officer in the UK needs a gun; they wouldn't accept that. But there needs to be a lot more. In rural areas like mine, if a group of people decided to go on a knife or gun spree, there would not be anyone around to stop them for at least half an hour. Tasers and perhaps handguns need to be a lot more common.

Yeet tbh u have to join the police of a certain area and then be “on the beat” for 2 years before joining any specialist roles. After that u apply to be an AFO and have to pass the tests to then be trained. In other words, it takes a while
what I question though is why the police seem to have better rifles than our military, like our military mainly use the l85 which is a carbine rifle and when talking to veterans and soldiers currently in the army they seem to mainly complain about the rifle
L85 is not a carbine, it's a bullpup rifle. It has not been manufactured for decades. The requirements for police weapons are different than military, and the SA80 would be unsuitable.
plus theres deaccessions of the L85/SA80 being replaced soon. Think the marines were deciding to change it to the Canadian-made C8 Diemaco although im not too sure.

Well obviously due to the higher amount of guns, they’d also probably have different ROE due to the different laws and carry laws in the US
