What most reports on the grocery hostage situation leave out is that Lassana Bathily, a Muslim employee originally from Mali, hid 15 people in the cold storage so they would not be hurt. Then he slipped outside to warn the police. They held him as a possible suspect for a time until they could prove he wasn't involved. He gave them information on the interior of the store and helped save many lives.
The exact comment I was looking for! Let me add some more information to this : He was an ‘irregular’ immigrant at that time. He hadn’t any legal document to reside in France. His procedure was on going. So he was working in that cocher shop without a declaration as a worker. In France no document = no declared job which means no healthcare, no insurance nor retirement…
But after the heroic act he did that day and helped saving those people, the government gave him a french citizenship directly. A nice gesture tho. He’s now a ‘french’ 👍🏻
