I’m from Louisiana. No one is paying top dollar to see a team that has been mostly horrible to mediocre for most of its existence here. Getting hyped for Zion died the minute they showed how unhappy he was at the idea of coming here. The new CBA has crushed a lot of these teams hopes of quick change. Most people know their teams are just okay. Not to mention the NBA is fighting for a piece of a pie that has more people fighting for a slice than ever before.

That would not mesh with fewer people watching. Leagues declining revenue from ticket sales has been offset by the success of their betting partnerships & growth in overseas markets. Player empowerment killed the NBA. People have become fans of players instead of teams. The NBA has done a terrible job marketing their younger stars, they relied on LBJ, Steph, and KD for too long and now they can't get casuals to care enough to tune into a game unless those three playing.
Yeah ratings are typically just TV ratings, and the methodology was always super flawed anyhow. Its based off a very small sample of people, I would bet you've never met anyone who was in the sample. So it doesn't include any streaming, particularly illegal streaming which the NBA is forcing people to go to when they have games on 15 different networks
The problem with the streaming argument is that NFL and MLB TV ratings are up. There are definitely people streaming illegally, but that doesn't explain the bad ratings. It's been reported NBA ratings are down 48% from the last 12 years. Other sports don't have the same issue

Don’t forget the monopoly on the ticket selling sites and their “fees”. You can get a ticket for a reasonable price but then the ticket seller adds 30-50% in fees and makes it no longer worth the price

If I’m Adam Silver I have two approaches I’m taking to improve the NBA product. 1.) SLOW DOWN THE PACE. Fast pace means more scoring which is exciting. It also means more blowouts when one team starts out red hot and goes up 25 in the first quarter, then the game is over. Implement rules to slow the pace down to the levels of around a decade ago and we will get more close contests and more exciting action. 2.) Make rivalries matter. Outside of Lakers Celtics what rivalries are there in the NBA? In college you develop rivalries with your conference opponents because you are competing for your conference title and a tournament berth. In the NFL, MLB and NHL it’s the same with divisions. Divisions matter because you are competing with those teams for the playoffs. When the NBA expands to 32 teams, create 4 divisions per conference. Winning your division guarantees you a top 4 seed in your conference playoffs, so home court advantage in the first round. That would make games like Bulls vs Bucks or Sixers vs Knicks mean more for both the players and the fans.
Even at an above average 40% 3pt completion rate. That's still a ton of bricks. Most teams shoot 40 3s a game. Some are hitting 50. That's at least 20 bricks per game.
Soccer cup games are interesting because you face teams outside your league that you typically wouldn't. And then there is a nationalism aspect to it, teams from different countries facing off. Nba Cup is just regular season games with extra steps.

The biggest problem with the NBA is you can tell a distinct difference between regular season play and playoff play. If the difference wasn't so dramatic I'd say it the regular season would be worth watching but it's like half speed compared to the playoffs sometimes

Ratings and ticket prices have dropped for these reasons: Extremely overpaid entitled players who don't even play hard on a nightly basis and could care less about the city they represent, zero defense allowed during the regular season, absolutely horrible officiating highlighted on a nightly basis, insanely overpriced tickets, they brought mainstream politics into the sport(this is the smallest issue but it still is definitely a reason). Over the decades the average fan has become wiser and can see that their time and money isn't worth investing into this current product.

As a former Presidential Candidate who lives in Vegas, I’ve been paying close attention to our economy. I just released an article whereby I discuss how we as average Americans are at record high credit card debit, delinquencies have doubled in the past 2 years and “Buy Now Pay Later” is on the rise. Vegas has had 3 months of down revenue. All of these, to me, speak to reason why prices have had to fall on these tickets. Formula 1 just happened here a few weeks ago and they under way performed financially. The cost to come here is ridiculous. People are working more and more hours with 60% of our population living paycheck to paycheck. Viewership being down is a result of cost through existing services and a fragmented experience on top of people having less time to give to a game that has turned into 3 point shooting contest. Thoughts?

Carry, discontinued dribble, crash into defenders etc etc. Shits hardly basketball. I said it long ago this 3 point shooting nonsense was going to ruin the league...when GSW and Rockets started dismissing bigs and opting for shooting wings instead. That GSW vs Rockets conference finals was so boring to watch. Now everyone in the league wants to make as many threes as possible no matter how many times they miss.
If I’m Adam Silver I have two approaches I’m taking to improve the NBA product.
1.) SLOW DOWN THE PACE. Fast pace means more scoring which is exciting. It also means more blowouts when one team starts out red hot and goes up 25 in the first quarter, then the game is over. Implement rules to slow the pace down to the levels of around a decade ago and we will get more close contests and more exciting action.
2.) Make rivalries matter. Outside of Lakers Celtics what rivalries are there in the NBA? In college you develop rivalries with your conference opponents because you are competing for your conference title and a tournament berth. In the NFL, MLB and NHL it’s the same with divisions. Divisions matter because you are competing with those teams for the playoffs. When the NBA expands to 32 teams, create 4 divisions per conference. Winning your division guarantees you a top 4 seed in your conference playoffs, so home court advantage in the first round. That would make games like Bulls vs Bucks or Sixers vs Knicks mean more for both the players and the fans.

My issue with the NBA cup is it means nothing. Last year was the first one so there was interest but after that, it seems pointless.
Soccer cup games are interesting because you face teams outside your league that you typically wouldn't. And then there is a nationalism aspect to it, teams from different countries facing off.
Nba Cup is just regular season games with extra steps.
The NBA grew because of personalities...Magic Bird in 80s,, MJ in 90s, Kobe & Shaq in the 2000s, Lebron & Steph in 2010s... the new CBA that limited big market teams which are more globally recognized and now are not contending WILL NOT cause the "casual fan" to look for other teams... they will LOOK FOR OTHER SPORTS! The biggest problem with the NBA is you can tell a distinct difference between regular season play and playoff play. If the difference wasn't so dramatic I'd say it the regular season would be worth watching but it's like half speed compared to the playoffs sometimes

You must not have watched Hawks vs Knicks the other day. Or any OKC game. There’s a lot of great defense in today’s league.
Reasons ratings are down.
1. Not on TV enough(regular TV, not 8 different streaming services)
2. Players don't care because money is guaranteed
3. Referees and replay is trash(to many fouls and flagrant fouls called.
4. Everyone is a diva
5. If game is on TV, it's the same teams playing
6. Show more games, not just the NBAcup
Ratings and ticket prices have dropped for these reasons: Extremely overpaid entitled players who don't even play hard on a nightly basis and could care less about the city they represent, zero defense allowed during the regular season, absolutely horrible officiating highlighted on a nightly basis, insanely overpriced tickets, they brought mainstream politics into the sport(this is the smallest issue but it still is definitely a reason). Over the decades the average fan has become wiser and can see that their time and money isn't worth investing into this current product.
It's great to try new things but the Lakers are exhibit A that "the cup", play in tournament,or whatever they choose to call it,means nothing.
I hate that ppl keep bringing these ratings topic up.

As a former Presidential Candidate who lives in Vegas, I’ve been paying close attention to our economy. I just released an article whereby I discuss how we as average Americans are at record high credit card debit, delinquencies have doubled in the past 2 years and “Buy Now Pay Later” is on the rise. Vegas has had 3 months of down revenue. All of these, to me, speak to reason why prices have had to fall on these tickets. Formula 1 just happened here a few weeks ago and they under way performed financially. The cost to come here is ridiculous. People are working more and more hours with 60% of our population living paycheck to paycheck. Viewership being down is a result of cost through existing services and a fragmented experience on top of people having less time to give to a game that has turned into 3 point shooting contest.

I'm older so I don't care to invest that much into major league sports. Regular people are not going to invest in it when the economy is hitting them hard.

Players have no loyalty to teams, cites but to money only! Team emphasizes in their marketing one or two players like Lebron and the Lakers instead of marketing a whole team! In the 80's the team not just the star was emphasized! It was a much enjoyable to watch and root for? The started to emphasize star marketing for shoe sales and uniform sales only. It gets boring seeing everyone shooting 3 out of 10 outside shots from the 3 line. Having super athletes on teams don't generally produces championships in the end!
Ratings are down because you need to pay to see every game, typically ticket prices are crazy high, the refs are terrible and not held accountable, and the industry even ranging to the media has become super woke. NBA is on a decline

The most IMMEDIATE thing they can do is give the top seeds to division winners. That alone would improve the league by bringing back TEAM RIVALRIES.

The game itself is angled towards way too much offense. Offense is allowed to do whatever with the ball. Carry, discontinued dribble, crash into defenders etc etc. Shits hardly basketball. Way too much emphasis on a 40% rate shot(3pt)
On top of offense becoming out of control, defenders are at the mercy of referees. Are penalized for even trying.
Other good reasons, you need like 3 subscriptions to watch games. Players sitting out for whatever reason. And the nba getting political. I know a lot of people that didn't left and never came back after that.
I think ratings are down because it’s a different era. There is some much more to watch on tv and phone than you would not be able to back then. Also season is 82 games and 3 hour long games. Attention span is short now due to the internet!

The end of the Rockets and Warriors game would be my guess. It was a great game, ruined by terrible officiating and I am the point that I seem to get to every year for the last 3 years where I see something like this and I just check out until the playoffs.

NBA kind of sucks now. All teams plays the same way, 3 points shots, pick/roll at the top of the key, isolation ball when they switch off pick/roll. No teams have their own individual offense like in 80's like LA fast break, Knicks tough defense. People are tired of a few things. They are tired of warm cities, get all the stars, and colder cities can not keep them. People are tired of calls getting reviewed and still be wrong or new rules made. People are tired refs getting more attention than they should. The nba is the only sport where people know the refs and for all the wrong reasons. People are tired that stars decide not to show in certain games for load management. You see across the board this year injuries everywhere more than normal. People in Detroit or new Orleans know they will never see a chip because stars refuse to go there that's an issue. All these combined people get turned off the nba. Half the league right now is unwatchable because stars refuse to go to certain teams. Then stars say the regular season doesn't matter, that too doesn't help. Even lebron comes out to say he doesn't go all in on the season until after the all-star break makes people say well if they dont care, why should I. If people can't see these are real issues, the nba will continue to suffer.
