"Why did that seem so sexual?"
The network initially placed strict limits on how much physical intimacy Willow and Tara could have onscreen, so magic is used to substitute for other forms of intimacy. If you rewatch some of their earlier scenes with this in mind, you'll never unsee the innuendo.

A note on the PTSD. I dont believe it was that, although Faith is very casual with sex, it was more that Faith was experiencing affection and love on a level she hasnt before. She was fearful of it so she pushed Riley away. To her you don't get something for nothing. Plus shes well aware she's in Buffy's body and i think its at this point that she's starting to understand what she's done and also what she's opened herself up to. Cut to the church scene which is so heartbreaking. It's unfortunate that not long after this Buffy finds out Faith slept with Riley, because i think she really could have changed her attitude toward her from feeling her pain.

I love the contrasts in how "Faith" says "Because it's wrong." First it's all mockingly, in the mirror, but by the end, when she's in the church, she actually says it like she means it: "You're not going to kill those people... because it's wrong." And I do believe she means that in the moment. She's a messed up girl, but deep down she does think it would be wrong for vampires to kill innocent people. I like that we see these deeper facets of Faith.
I also think it's really interesting in that final fight how Faith (as Buffy) is basically pummeling herself and calling herself nothing. It really shows how Faith feels about herself and how troubled she really is. It makes her such a sadder character than I ever realized before.

Faith's return in this 2-parter for me was a highlight of season 4, especially when she wakes up to ruin as much as she can for our characters. Also, to be fair Willow did not pick up on things being off with Buffy because she was hyper focused on Tara, she was hoping that everyone in the gang would like her just like she does. It's a very believable and relatable situation, again such amazing writing for this show. Another brilliant and fun episode

    • @Girl4Music
      @Girl4Music Год назад +1

In a later episode when Buffy and Willow are apologizing to each other, Buffy says that she wasn’t paying attention because was too wrapped up with Riley and then Willow tells her that she hasn’t been Miss Available either because she was too wrapped up with Tara. They were both hyper-focused on their significant others that they didn’t see each other and what they were going through. It’s a very relatable situation indeed. When you get a romantic/sexual partner, you tend to forget about your friends because suddenly something new and exciting happens to you. It’s not intentional that you would ignore your friends for it of course, but it does happen like that. And I love how this season showcases that ‘growing apart from each other’ aspect because of there’s more going on in their individual lives. There’s other people in it. And therefore I think Willow’s reasoning for separating Tara from the Scoobies is valid.
Her feeling is that of “She’s mine and only mine”. Unhealthy? Yes. Relatable? Yes.
So as much as Willow wants to reassure Tara that she’s not an outsider, I think part of her is grateful that Tara isn’t as involved as she could be. Part of her likes that she only belongs to her. And she can be possessive like that. Early signs of co-dependency showing with this.
And if anything this episode shows us just how useful Tara could be to the Gang as a witch. Tara is smart in ways all the other characters are not. Especially Willow. Her intelligence is deeply imbedded in her empathy and respect. She comes across as an ‘old soul’. Wise beyond her years. A mystic. A yogi. A master. She’s naturally the right person to be the voice of reason after Giles. Naturally the mediator.

The irony of Faith saying she’s the one and only slayer is that she’s *correct.*
Buffy is an anomaly. Her death triggered the activation of Kendra and passing of the slayer line. Buffy is “a” slayer, but not “the” slayer.
Faith is actually the official “true” slayer. The slayer line runs through her. If Buffy were to die several more times, bones slayer would be called. Only Faith’s death would do so, as she is the true slayer.

  • @Girl4Music
    @Girl4Music Год назад +5

“Are they going to astral project while Faith … is doing what she’s doing?”
Not exactly. They’re empathically connected to Faith and Riley’s intercourse. There’s a piece of written fanfiction that explains the whole ritual.
And it’s really clever the way they write it. Everything Faith and Riley are feeling is something Willow and Tara can feel and because of the magic, it’s amplified by their own sexual energy. So technically it’s a sex scene between them.

@@paulinerobertson6836 this is such a weird take given everything that Buffy did to faith when she first arrived. Buffy was IMMEDIATELY hostile towards faiths the second she started feeling insecure. So she became INSANELY Territorial over her friends, mother, home AND even her French fries Lmfao. They even have an argument about it the first episode she appears in. People seem to forget that faiths younger then Buffy and has NOTHING, no watcher, no friend and Certainly no mother to Lean on for support like Buffy has. Not to mention growing up in the foster system and experiencing vampires as a CHILD plus creepy men has given her SEVERE trauma and trust issues. Buffy has an insane amount of privilege and comfort compared to faith and still CONSTANTLY made her feel like an outsider. Faith is 100% in control of her action and knows what she’s doing your right about that but to pretend like Buffy’s and more importantly WESLEY’S actions didn’t directly PUSH faith into the arms of the first person who was willing to treat her decently and care about her would just be denial. Wesley DESTROYED any ability she had to trust people again that Angel was getting out of her so she doubled down to protect herself and that makes perfect sense given her history. It’s sad when you realize that this teenage girl got swept up by the biggest evil in the area just because he treated her kindly and cared for her, that’s literally ALL Buffy and her friends had to do. Instead they treated her as the backup slayer and CONSTANTLY gave praise and love to Buffy for being a hero. Everyone’s to blame for her downfall 🤷🏻‍♂️ 10/10 character 👊

We of course are seeing Faith have great fun in Buffy's body, sexually teasing Spike, but she does the ultimate betrayal technically raping Riley whilst inheriting Buffy's body we know at this point Faith is amoral having tried to sexually assault and murder Xander is S3 Consequences as well. Tara of course uses her powers to deduce that it isn't the real Buffy. A great conversation with Forest and Faith in Buffy's body. A super ending in the church when the two fight again and everything is restored. Riley feels guilty at the end, but he was totally unaware who it was. Faith of course is a great character in the Buffyverse, but an interesting juxtaposition at this point in that Faith with a soul is as evil as Angel or Spike when they were soulless, even though we see her human side at the end . This episode and the preceding one were a great two-parter.

This ultimately is such an awesome episode. In Faith's case it's actually much bigger than many initially realize.
One thing the show never does is really openly discuss Faith's history, but they've hinted at it plenty, and all the hints point to a very bad life, full of abuse and trauma. Basically, Faith grew up a military brat with her father in the military somewhere. It's doesn't say if he died or left, but it's likely he wasn't good. Faith hints at her mother being neglectful and physically abusive. More, she also mentions how any relationship she ever had with a man ended up with them hurting her. Also, she never really had any friends and she dropped out of school.
Worse, her whole life before becoming the slayer, nobody ever cared for her or felt she was good for anything.
So, when she became the slayer, it was not just some powers and a mission to her. Suddenly a watcher comes into her life, someone who gives her all sorts of attention and tells her she's not only special, but vitally important. Now she has all sorts of skills and is so good at so many things. She's saving all sorts of people, and for once, nobody can hurt her.
Then she messes up and the one person who ever cared for her in her whole life gets brutally murdered due to her mistake. She escapes to Sunnydale and Buffy saves her.
Initially this is not bad. As time goes by though, she sees that every aspect of being the slayer that made Faith special, made her worth anything to anyone, Buffy is so much better at. The one good thing she had in her life, Buffy stole.
It's any wonder the Mayor was able to suck her in, with all his paternal attention and affection. She was worth something to someone again. Then Buffy takes that away too.
Now, she's barely been awake for a day and she's taken Buffy's life. It seems initially a good way to escape the repercussions of her actions, but it ends up being much more than that.
Being in Buffy's body, all her baggage she's been carrying around for all her life is removed. She gets to see the world in a whole new light. She gets to see what life without all the limitations of her past is like. Having friends who love her. A paternal figure who is proud of her for doing good. A boyfriend who wants to make love, not just use her.
That was her mistake though. She just couldn't help but stab at Buffy that way.
If you watch that scene where Riley professes his love for Buffy, you will notice some strange cuts, where her face is flashed at slight different angles quickly. This is an old school filmmakers trick to signify a mental break, a schism of the mind. Something in Faith's mind is broken open and some past trauma is revisited on her. Note how her voice is different afterwards, as if she's regressed into being a child.
We can only speculate as to what it is, but it's likely it's not great. In any event, it changes her forces her to see how she's become.
This change is signified by a statement she keeps repeating throughout the episode. Because it is wrong. In the beginning, she says it with disdain as a joke. By the final time she says it, she says it with conviction, because she believes it.
She has no more excuses. When she meets up with herself, she judges herself worthy of death and tries killing herself. Fortunately Buffy switched bodies on her so she doesn't kill herself with Buffy still in there.
    [Spoilers ahead]
When we see her again in Angel, she starts the episode right from the start with a mission to get killed. Many think it's just at the end she wants to die, but everything she does that episode is with the intention of it leading to her death.
Initially, she didn't know Angel was in LA, so she was doing everything she could to get on the cops radar. She was hoping the cops would gun her down. She even broke a cops bone, which would really piss them off and make them in a shoot first type of mindset.
When she learned Angel was in town, she quickly switched tracks to try to get him to kill her. That's why she accepts the contract so quickly. Dying at the hands of the cops would probably mean she would kill a number of cops before they could take her down. If she went up against Angel, it would mean a lot fewer innocent bystanders would be hurt in the process.
She had already decided she needed to die in that fight with Buffy. Angel's episode was just the execution of her decision.
    It's such a crazy episode.

When they rehearsed this, Sarah and Eliza originally played the Buffy and Faith parts, respectively, while the other watched and memorised their mannerisms. Then the actresses swapped roles for the cameras.
I don't think there's anything strange about Buffy's friends not realising that she is actually Faith. Even in Sunnydale, if your friend is acting a little peculiar your immediate reaction is more likely to be "What's up with her today?" not "Oh my God, she's an imposter wearing our friend's skin!"

"The one and only". Faith is trying to be Buffy. To not be Faith anymore and wash away her sins by becoming someone else (Buffy). So when she says "The one and only" it shows that she always considers Buffy the real Slayer. Whether she considers her chance of being the Slayer stolen from her because Buffy was still around, or whether it's something Faith doesn't feel she was able to live up to is debatable. Maybe some of both.

Interesting that it was Tara, a "stranger" and not a close friend, that recognized Buffy wasn't really Buffy...and also that it was Faith (in Buffy's body) that recognized Willow "wasn't driving stick anymore" while Willow's close friends hadn't picked up on it yet.

This episode gives Spuffy and Twillow shippers plenty to work with 😯 3:39 / 22:35 Yes, the Tara + Willow stuff is very clearly sexual, either subtext or metaphor. Apparently plenty of viewers in 1999 and 2000 didn't see it, but I think it's pretty obvious to most viewers in the 2020s.
It is a bit odd that Willow didn't notice the swap, but she was quite wrapped up in her own stuff (being nervous about introducing Tara to her friends) and thus wasn't really paying enough attention.

If this had gone on for multiple in world days with the group interacting I would completely expect Willow to notice. But given that she spent maybe 15 minutes with "Buffy", it seems reasonable she wouldn't jump to the rather out there assumption of possession or body swap just because she's a little off. Plus the subplot of the group this season is that they are all being pulled away from eachother, Buffy entirely wrapped up in Riley and ignoring the others, Willow quietly struggling through a pretty dramatic life change, Xander and Giles being a bit adrift and feeling forgotten. I always liked that it was Tara who noticed both as the outside and through her power as a witch as honestly that makes the most sense.

Dakara is over here shipping Faith and Buffy yet not quite seeing Willow and Tara as a couple until it's made blindingly obvious. I think that kind of speaks to the whole way that we've been conditioned to look at same-sex pairings on TV, always getting a few crumbs of potential that never really goes anywhere (like Dean and Cas or Rizzoli and Isles, for example), so when we finally get an actual same-sex romantic pairing, we distrust it until we get incontrovertible proof of its existence. Especially on a show this old, where they were legitimately breaking new ground in representation. And it really matters that this show actually went there with a main character. Willow isn't Larry (RIP). Willow is a fan favorite regular character who has been with us since day 1. It really means something to see her in this new blossoming romance with Tara.

With all the fantastic acting and fascinating interactions in this episode, there's one thing that usually gets overlooked that I want to point out - the reason WHY Tara was the first person to know about the bodyswap.
When she's talking to Willow she says that most people's auras have a natural flow, but Buffy's was fractured and not natural. Why doesn't anyone realize this means Tara sees people's auras ALL THE TIME?!? That's a big part of how she's so empathetic to the people around her, because she can read their auras and know how they're feeling... and she can see how her words can soothe their auras if they ask for or need her help.
This is my personal headcannon here and ***MINOR SPOILERS*** for anyone who hasn't watched past the middle of season 5:
We find out that Tara is a witch who is the daughter of a witch, with implications that it has run in her family for generations. She's a natural witch, born with magic, and grew up seeing magic in the world around her that is hidden from most people, unless they can perform a spell allowing them to see for a short time. In fact, later on Tara says "I saw a world enchanted, spirits and charms in the air. I always took for granted I was the only one there."
On the other side, Willow studied and practiced spells until, as Giles warned would happen, when she was weak and in the hospital trying to do the spell to get Angel's soul back SOMETHING powerful posessed her long enough to complete the spell properly. Whatever it was left her body afterwards, but it also opened her up more fully to the magic. After that, Willow was able to do spells she couldn't even dream of before, and she kept studying and practicing because, in all honesty, she enjoyed being able to be a stronger part of the team and feel more equal to her best friend and able to help Buffy more.
By the time they got to Uni, Willow was pretty equal to Tara in power level, even though Tara had probably been trained by her mother up until she died when Tara was 17. I also believe the reason why they were able to connect enough to move the soda machine to block the door in Hush is because Tara was used to meshing magical energies with her mom, so it took her a few seconds to get on Willow's wavelength so they could move the soda machine on sheer magical power alone, no spell required. Since then, they've been sparking and meshing in a lot of ways, both during spells and just being together. I believe that's also why Tara told Willow that she was her's in this episode - she was being as outspoken as she knew how that she was in love with Willow and ready to commit to her. And I love love love her incredibly sweet heart that as shy and introverted as Tara is, she put herself out there like that, even though she knew Willow wasn't completely sure about them being out as a couple, just to give Willow that extra reassurance that she needed.
Yes, Willow and Tara are tied for my #1 spot with a couple that doesn't get on equal ground until the second half of season 7. And yes, I know I've thought about it way too much!

    • @Girl4Music
      @Girl4Music Год назад

She’s an Empath. I fully believe that. As a natural witch but also just as a person. Her natural ability is to feel other people’s stuff. Willow’s not a natural witch (as in she wasn’t born with magic) but she has all the potential to become one with Tara’s help. Willow only gets better at magic because of Tara. Before her she was incompetent.

Posting my BUFFY REWATCH recap for ‘Who Are You’. May contain spoilers.
This is such a beautiful little scene. It’s not the big reveal for everyone that they’re in a romantic relationship just yet but it does definetly allude to the audience watching that that’s where the writing is heading. A big reveal.
Willow finally tells Tara why she hasn’t been introduced to the friends she talks about non-stop to her yet. It’s not because she’s ashamed of her or that she wants to hide her from her friends. It’s because she wants to keep her to herself for a little while longer. Not have her be a part of the “Scooby Slayage” responsibilities just yet.
A little later in the scene, Willow is ready to introduce Tara to Buffy when they see her in the Bronze - or so she believes at the time - but she’s not ready to confess that they’re lovers to her. Not just yet, anyway. However, as Buffy and Faith have swapped bodies, it ends up being Faith that is the first one to know. I mean, she really only guesses - but Tara’s very bad at playing poker face when she brings up Oz. Tara figures out that that was not really Buffy and got worried.
Willow and Tara go back to Tara’s dorm room and Tara explains what she knows and gives an idea as to how to potentially switch Buffy and Faith’s energies back into the right bodies again... which then has them performing a ritual to contact the Nether Realm (very clever name by the way, writers) through magic that is ...er... for lack of a better phrase... intensely sexual. Especially considering they mix and mash it with Faith’s attempt raping of Riley while in Buffy’s body. And honestly, my thoughts on that whole montage are ... too much to talk about. I am aware that Whedon went for the metaphorical sex approach... but was that really necessary?
Anyway, they eventually meet up with the real Buffy, who is at the time in Faith’s body, and explains that they have the solution to the problem. All is well again because of two insanely compatible witches. They save the day without fighting but by having some sweaty spell fun. Lovely suggestive writing indeed.

    FORREST:
    “Yeah, you’re a killer.”
    FAITH:
“I am not a killer! I am the Slayer. And you don’t know the first thing about me!”
    FORREST:
“You really care what I think?”
    FAITH:
    *Pauses*
    “No. I don’t care.
*Thinks. Tries to process her thoughts. Gets distressed. Finally turns around and walks away*
    God, I don’t care!”
That’s SO Faith. That’s what her reaction would be entirely!
All I see is Faith here. I see no Buffy even though it’s Buffy’s body. That’s how good of an actress Gellar is. The way Gellar played that. Reacted to him in a way she knows Buffy never would have reacted to him. The way the eyebrows move and the creases in the forehead show up. He clearly hit a nerve in her and rather than spend the time to figure out why that is, she just shuts out her emotions. Even in somebody else’s body she’s still uncomfortable and unsatisfied with who she is.
Buffy wouldn’t talk like that. Wouldn’t move her body or face like that. Likely wouldn’t even answer to Forrest’s comment at all. In fact Buffy wouldn’t have given a shit what Forrest thought. The most she would have done in reaction to his comment would be to scoff then turn around and walk away.
But that just shows how well Gellar has got Faith’s mannerisms down. Facial expressions and everything. Tone, vibe. Her entire energy. It’s just spot on Faith’s reaction every bit of this performance. She’s fucking incredible in this episode as Faith. She’s so damn convincing portraying Faith that she makes Faith’s portrayal of Buffy seem so damn unconvincing. And therefore shows just how much Faith doesn’t know herself and doesn’t understand her own feelings. Has 0 self-awareness and self-security. It’s bloody brilliant. Figures Faith would only come to terms with just how much she hates herself while she’s escaping from it. And as soon as she’s back in her own body, she doesn’t know what to do with herself but just rinse and repeat. If she can’t face the trauma and the pain what else can she do but purposefully self-destruct? That’s what she’s always done.
It takes a lot of self-reflection to truly know one’s self and become at peace with being it. Faith never gives herself the time, patience or opportunity to truly learn who she is. She’s always too busy crawling into someone else’s skin in effort to distract herself from it. And as disturbing as it is, I really do think it’s genius writing how Faith takes advantage of Riley while in Buffy’s body. Therefore taking advantage of the BOTH of Riley and Buffy. Because it doesn’t matter whether she’s wearing somebody else’s body or thrusting herself on top of it or even all at the same time, the whole point is that she doesn’t have to see herself. Doesn’t have to face herself. Because then that means self-reflection. And she wants to avoid doing that at all costs because she’s afraid of what she will reveal.
And Gellar 100% knows how to portray that complex in her. Knows that that’s what the character Faith would do. Instead of self-reflect, deflect and then self-destruct.
Faith’s the kinda girl to wear 25 different faces all at once and not a single one of them is her own. Yet because of that, you can see right through her. Then you look at somebody like Tara,… and while she also harbour insecurities about herself… every single time, the face that reacts when they’re brought to the surface is always her own because she’s always self-reflecting. Faith is more like Willow. Shows you who she wants you to see rather than who she actually is. It’s always a performance. It’s always a way to escape from or avoid self-reflection, and therefore self-growth. The only real difference is Faith chooses offence instead of defence. She prefers to act out rather than cover up. To attack rather than hide away. But it’s all the same to someone like me who has played both sides of the chessboard of identity and came up the loser no matter what strategy I tried to win the game with. Whether it be internalizing or externalizing, it doesn’t matter. Neither works. Neither are a solution or fix. Reflection is the way to go. It’s hard and it’s gruelling but it’s fucking necessary. It has to be done. It is much more worth it to do the hard work required and to meet the pain and the trauma head on rather than waste time and energy trying to escape from or avoid it because all that tends to do is just make it so much worse.
People try relentlessly to either be somebody that they’re not or distract themselves from themselves. But you can’t escape from or avoid being yourself. It is relatively impossible. And lying does you no good either. Better to be honest. With yourself as well as everybody else because it’s you that has to face yourself no matter what in the end. Delaying the process only ensures one thing. That it’s much more difficult to do everything else. Faith believes letting loose and going wild is the easy way out of her pain and trauma. But it only makes it harder to handle the next time something bad happens. She’s making things much more difficult to deal with in the long run by escaping and avoiding dealing with it now.
And the fact that that’s only realized while in somebody else’s body is storytelling poetry.

Sarah Michelle Gellar did an excellent job playing Faith but Faith did not do an excellent job playing Buffy. I know that was the point… but still. And it really does go to show how little attention people pay to Buffy that a god damn random ass girl that has never even met her - a stranger (a very perceptive stranger but a stranger nonetheless) figured out that Buffy wasn’t Buffy when neither the Scoobies or Riley did.
Especially considering Faith’s act was that bad. I think it says a lot that none of them know Buffy that well that they’re able to tell that it’s definitely not Buffy. You could say it speaks to the theme of the season. The Scoobies losing contact and communication with each other. Too much going on in their individual lives. Too much focus on their own respective endeavours. But even so… these people (sans Riley) have known Buffy since as long as we have known her following the show. They’re familiar with the supernatural and magic and weird shit happening all the time in Sunnydale and (again, sans Riley), they know Faith.
What gives? It’s actually quite sad to be honest.
