  • Welcome to the Sawtooth Mountains of Idaho, my favorite place on earth. On this adventure I take 3 Sawtooth newbies on a 2 night, 28 mile backpacking trip from Redfish Lake in Stanley to the Sawtooth Lodge in Grandjean. A boat shuttle takes us from Redfish Lodge to the Redfish Lake Inlet on the south side of Redfish Lake. From there we hike up to one of the most spectacular lakes in the Sawtooth's, Saddleback Lake. On day 2 we scramble back down to the trail, hike past Alpine Lake, up over the Baron Divide and down to Baron Lake. From there it's an 11 mile hike down to the Sawtooth Lodge in Grandjean.

      Jon I’m coming out in July! I would love to do a hike with you. Trying to get my sister who loves the outdoors and lives there to do a hike with me but she is scared to camp out in the wilderness. How do I change her mind? She is missing out on what she enjoys.

    I’ve watched countless videos of the Sawtooths over the years. I finally got to experience them, and I am completely in love with them. I’ve enjoyed your videos, Jon. Thank you so much for sharing these beautiful mountains with everyone. I also love that you go backpacking with your Mom sometimes. I got my own son hooked on backpacking, and love sharing the adventures with him. We’re in Nampa.

    Your videos have gotten so badass! I started following you a few years ago and planned my Idaho camping/hiking trip around your videos. I spent 9 days hiking my way through the saw tooths, soaked in hot springs and got lost in the beauty of it all. Planning my next trip now. Thank you!

    I totally agree with your sentiment! We share and protect what we love. And more people knowing means more advocates for our favorite places. Now, this does have limits … I don’t add all my favorite places to public maps 😂 but I do tell other people about them!
    I did a 23 mile loop (day hike/run) from Grandjean up to Trail Creek Lakes, then up to Sawtooth Lake and around down Baron Creek just after you did this (early October … but 4 inches of snow up at 9k’!) … such a spectacular place! Thank you for sharing these 😄

    Love the video and attitude, You are not giving away secrets you are sharing your love of the sawtooths. You are 100% correct hiking the sawtooths is work and most folks watching your videos will never take the time and effort to hike even to sawtooth lake and bock. That is a great 10 mile hike but so many people will never take the time to do even after watching your videos. I however get the urge to make the redfish to sawtooth lodge and really like the idea coming over from redfish vs the other way around 3000 ft is some serious gain

    • @JonConti
      @JonConti  2 года назад +1

      Ya we nailed this trip. Did it perfectly! If you go I highly recommend redfish to Grandjean and not the other way

    Great video! I appreciate your commentary about social media, keeping things a secret, et. al...However, I do think there is a conversation worth having about the ethics of "geotagging" wild areas. To your point, the time, the cost and the effort to make it to Saddleback or other places is significant and most who do it seem to have, at their core, a respect for the wilderness and sensitive habitats. On the other hand, there's also, in my opinion, a level of outdoor stewardship that goes well beyond LNT and extends into extra efforts of time and finances to help conserve and restore wildnerness areas. That comes with education, and deep consideration of what it means to profit of off the posting of photos, and videos of wild places. I'd love to hear your thoughts!
