“This gives me enough time for my defenders to come over and go for the ball” Me: “In a random pickup game this gives me enough time for the big guy to get back into position, post me up, and make the layup over my head - all while my defenders watch it happen”
Tough defending the post as an undersized guard. If you front, you better hope your teammate is pressuring the ball handler. I 3/4 all the time if stuck on the low block, one a good bounce pass can lead to a drop step and easy bucket.
That's exactly what I thought: guarding front in the post means you are really confident in your teammates or if you are TALLER than the offensive player.
Weak side help ought to already be in the lane. When the pass to the post is made, weakside help D can dig down on that bounce pass / drop step and strip the ball. And with proper defensive rotation, the two weakside offensive players will be guarded by another rotating defender.
this really opened my eyes to the fact that i was so worried about the big man scoring, i never thought about making it harder for them to get the ball in the first place
An important item to note while in a 3/4 front … if the ball is above the free throw line, you should be on the "top" side; as this allows you to be in a "help" position if a perimeter defender gets beat into the lane. As the ball transitions to below the free throw line, you need to make an "X" move to the baseline side. This allows you to remain in a 3/4 front AND if the wing defender gets beat baseline you are already in a good help position to close off that baseline drive. This also prevents a good post player from "pinning" the post defender to the top side, thereby creating a driving lane for an offensive perimeter player.
My coach always told me about putting my hand in their “pocket” obviously they never actually have one. Back of your hand on them, wide strong stance, and don’t jump for blocks. Last one is useful *_sometimes._*
Great info. A Good base is the key and you talk about that not just defending. Guarding from the back allows the defender to go straight into "boxing out" as soon as that ball is released from shooting which is very important to me. A lot of coaches don't really honed in on this anymore. Great job coach, keep up the good work. I'm sharing your info to some of my son's team mate's.
The profile may look like I don't care about ball, but I really do take it seriously thanks for this man I'm gonna try some of these tips today at the park, see how it benefits me as I develop and try to make my high school team! Thanks!

How does a shorter defender prevent lobs when fronting? Is it all on the defender defending the ball handler or should he rely on help defense or some combination of both? Is there anything a short defender can do to prevent his man from catching the lob?
Since most tall players depend on their post moves i do my best to push them out just a bit. When he get the ball i hold him bakc as long as possible as my team doubles him up thus forcing him to pass
I’m a lockdown perimeter defender and a good post defender when it’s someone my size but I’m 14 5’9 and 150lbs most of the time I play with people 6’2 and above who are at least 215 all the defenses I’ve skill in the world still doesn’t stop someone from backing you down so I wanted to see if this video could help
I'm here because I play with a friend of mine who is roughly 20cm higher than me (I' 172cm he's like 193cm for americans I'm 5'7 3/4 and he's like 6'4). I'm faster than him and we're both athletic but I have to really grind to defend on him when he's playing in post. I manage to do it most of the time but that's just because he's still getting better at the game and has more to learn
i Always put my hand away from there a splitt second before they get pass or around 3 seconds and steal the ball because i load up my feet before charging for the ball
I destroy my older brother cant touch me but I played good defence and stamina advantage too fit and I am too quick amazing dive and good shots. I been working hard one year strength and cardio at home and I keep going. I love my body good genetics
Allen Iverson crossover, Shamgod, The Smitty, Behind the Back and thru the legs. Then just do some jelly layups, and kyrie irving spin layups. Also check InTheLab, Professor Live and IlovebasketballTV for tutorials on all these. Then GetHandles once you pearn all these.
Yannis Karageorgiou some of those may be a bit complex for a beginner. There is no need to learn that many layups. I play extremely well in 1v1 by attacking the basket and either finishing normally, or faking a layup then doing a fadeaway.

Any more tips? My best friend is 3 inches taller and 50 pounds heavier than me but I'm always the second tallest at pickup so I still have to guard him. Hard to have good help defense in pickup since people scared to get scored on and sometimes he just finishes over them
I know this is a bit late and not even who you were asking but basically, muscle up to gain weight, strengthen your legs so he can't post you up(body) so easily Edit: wear shoes with a lot of grip and develop your vertical.
Just stay lower than him and try to lift him. This will take away his traction under his foot because there is rless weight on it. It doesn't matter how strong you are, leverage and geometry are king
Im the second tallest guy on my team. Im 6"0 and I have to guard 6"5 guys all the time. I like playing like a guard. My bestfriend is our point guard and I play with him a lot. We play this one guy who is like 6"8 and 250lb l. We call him Moses because he can just part the way no matter how hard you try lol
Its annoying to play in the post because our back up guards are let's just say not on the grind. I am faster and a better dribbler but I never get to express that because I am too busy trying to guard a huge guy. I know its more fair for me to guard them than my teamates but it still kinda sucks
Tyler this is kinda my situation while playing pick up, how do you guard their constant post hooks. I contest as well as I can but most of the time it goes on.
Actually I would shoot over short guys guarded close as if they were not there. If I got the ball it was over for you. Did not matter how you guarded me after I got it. Main thing is keep them out of the paint. Offensive 3 second rule. No defensive 3 in Highschool and College basketball. When I guard other players that post up I ball deny them and then they don't get it usually and they run away and open the lane up for layup game.

Toh Nic not really, this is why zone defenses work so much better. A tall man should be at the post zone. This way he can guard the center.
