    “This gives me enough time for my defenders to come over and go for the ball”
    Me: “In a random pickup game this gives me enough time for the big guy to get back into position, post me up, and make the layup over my head - all while my defenders watch it happen”

  • @Chandasouk

    Tough defending the post as an undersized guard. If you front, you better hope your teammate is pressuring the ball handler. I 3/4 all the time if stuck on the low block, one a good bounce pass can lead to a drop step and easy bucket.

    • @Kevin-kb
      @Kevin-kb 6 лет назад +2

      That's exactly what I thought: guarding front in the post means you are really confident in your teammates or if you are TALLER than the offensive player.

    • @ThincPROBasketball

      Weak side help ought to already be in the lane. When the pass to the post is made, weakside help D can dig down on that bounce pass / drop step and strip the ball. And with proper defensive rotation, the two weakside offensive players will be guarded by another rotating defender.

  • @joelbenefiel3829
    @joelbenefiel3829 4 года назад +21

    An important item to note while in a 3/4 front … if the ball is above the free throw line, you should be on the "top" side; as this allows you to be in a "help" position if a perimeter defender gets beat into the lane. As the ball transitions to below the free throw line, you need to make an "X" move to the baseline side. This allows you to remain in a 3/4 front AND if the wing defender gets beat baseline you are already in a good help position to close off that baseline drive. This also prevents a good post player from "pinning" the post defender to the top side, thereby creating a driving lane for an offensive perimeter player.

    Great info. A Good base is the key and you talk about that not just defending. Guarding from the back allows the defender to go straight into "boxing out" as soon as that ball is released from shooting which is very important to me. A lot of coaches don't really honed in on this anymore. Great job coach, keep up the good work. I'm sharing your info to some of my son's team mate's.

    How does a shorter defender prevent lobs when fronting? Is it all on the defender defending the ball handler or should he rely on help defense or some combination of both? Is there anything a short defender can do to prevent his man from catching the lob?

    • @the25thchromosome5

    Summary?

    Actually I would shoot over short guys guarded close as if they were not there.
    If I got the ball it was over for you. Did not matter how you guarded me after I got it.
    Main thing is keep them out of the paint. Offensive 3 second rule. No defensive 3 in Highschool and College basketball.
    When I guard other players that post up I ball deny them and then they don't get it usually and they run away and open the lane up for layup game.

    I'd came here because the bigman that i'm getting posted is so tough and bumping me kinda intentionally.

    Im a small guy who is 15 years old and 5'6-5'7. My problem is that I play 1v1 with some fat strong guy who is like 6'2 and he keeps posting me up and scoring on me. I try to play post defense, but I keep getting bodied du to his strength every time he puts his back on me. That is the reason why I'm trash at ball cuz I keep getting bodied by taller guys in the post. Ik it's a mismatch, but there r a lot of my friends who are same size as me that can beat that guy.

      In a one on one taller and bigger players have an advantage especially if you have the same skills and athleticism
