In the "Post Defense" series Coach Mike uses video analysis and coaching experience to introduce new techniques, tricks and tips to defend against post mismatches.
Part 1 lays the building blocks for physicality, different defensive positions and a subtle trick to prevent a classic post up. Using these starting techniques, defenders should be able to eliminate deep post catches and frustrate an opponent. If the post up becomes a mid-range face-up, the advantage should sway back in favor of the lockdown perimeter defender.
    Part 1:
    Physical Jam
    3/4 Position
    The Push Out
    Front Position

I'm 5'11 so not tall but often I guard much taller players in the post because I'm strong for my size and pesky. It's really about the physicality, you need to look at it like a battle especially against bigger players. In addition I often do the "wrap around". That's useful if the offensive player already has position. So I try to invite the bounce pass and watch the opposing guards eyes, then when I sense the pass is coming I push the arms of my opponent away to give me an boost and I quickly take one step in front of him and intercept the ball. It works really well especially against inexperienced players.

How do you guard taller players that basically live in the paint and have very accurate point blank shots? I find it super tough to contest their shot

    • @ballislife9924

@@arai6147 Against players like these you have at first admit that you won't shut him down. You can make it tough, get him out of his rythm and maybe he has a off night then. Secondly the key to defend players like these is to make sure that you don't let them get into position. Once he has the ball in a good spot it's basically over. You have to get into his knees and hurt him little so that it is uncomfortable for him to get to his spot. You find that often these players will settle for mid range shots over you and sometimes they will make them. If you are athletic these shots will become relatively low percentage tho. Also it's key that you have good help defense behind you so that you can really pressure the offensive player.

As a 5’9, and I happen to expect or anticipate a mismatch. I just pressure the player to prevent him from getting the ball. I do front when it’s really deep but I used 3/4 or Jam on mid range.

Hit the guy with your abdominals - not too strong to avoid a foul call -, and when he gets the ball in the post, keep your arms up and your legs low enough to remain strong, if you can't play the block, put a hand or two in his face. You can also try to strip the ball. If you front, put your hands as much as you can in front of your opponent's hand(s) because he will necessarily catch the ball there. Deny him the possibility of contacting you to get position. Pay attention to the guy who has the ball to see when he will throw it to your player : when the ball is in the air, it's unprotected. Always keep your opponent's feet squared by yours if you're between him and the basket. Try to force a catch as far from the basket and close to the baseline as possible to stuck your opponent. Foul if necessary to prevent a sure basket.

Though I’m smaller I’m usually just as strong or not far off especially in the leg area so I usually match force for a bit to get them to play more physical and Begin to use that against them to then pluck to the ball to a teammate , get a face up, or cause them to turn over or atleast pick up the ball. I also try to stop them from getting great positioning in the paint by trying to dictate them one way then play tall in the end or play pressure defense on them to pick the ball up or turn over. I focus a lot of times to be lower than them for more strength knowing I can’t win in the height category.

A simple yet effective swim over move to steal/poke the ball away during the post entry pass. I saw it from Thinking Basketball's video on Russell Westbrook (search Russell Westbrook analysis, 2019: Who needs efficiency?) at the 7:00 mark.

@@LockdownDefense No problem , Coach ! I have found that timing the swim over move as the pass is being initiated is best. If you time it right the offensive player passes the ball straight into your hands with a lob/or bounce pass. #defenseneedsarevolution
