Shin megami tensei v the long awaited sequel the critically acclaimed 4th shin megami tensei game. This addition to the smt games is no slouch when it comes to the real world inspiration for the important characters in shin megami tensei V. This smt lore video will go over all of the figures of bethel and their shin megami tensei lore. With heavy hitting religious figures like Odin, Zeus, Khonsu, Vasuki, and a secret one that is also talked about in the video, there is no shortage of things to talk about for the bethel leaders of shin megami tensei v. Shin megami tensei 5 lore runs deep with real world inspiration and they are treated very respectfully in smt5. This shin megami tensei v lore video will go into detail about the myth of the leaders of bethel in shin megami tensei v. Each one was chosen to be a representative of their entire region and encompass a wide swathe of people, so hopefully I do a good job explaining them all. The smt series has my favorite games of all time and shin megami tensei v is quickly becoming one of my favorite smt games. Not to mention having some of the best smt lore.
In Shin Megami Tensei V Bethel is an international organization headed by gods of every denomination and region. These figureheads are depicted prominently throughout the game and play an important role in the overall narrative and conflict of the game. Who are these gods though? They were deemed so important that they would be the representatives of their entire religion so let’s learn a little bit more about them. Odin of the Nordic branch, Khonsu of the Egyptian branch, Vasuki of the Indian branch, Zeus of the Greek branch, and a special one we’ll get into at the end of the video. Let’s dive into the lore and backstory of each of these divine beings and see why they are the specific divine beings chosen to work together in beating back the forces of chaos.

The monochrome design of Zeus might also be a reference to Zeus's alternate personality Alastor. Alastor is said to be a spirit of vengeance and retribution, particularly associated with familial crimes. It was said that Zeus would dawn this persona to avenge evil deeds. Well that's what was said at least. Theirs a lot of confusion regarding Alastor, but that's not really important here. Notice how Zeus's right side is soft and has a sort of cloud motif, reflecting his role as the kind jovial father of the heavens, while his left side is darker and jagged, reflecting his more vengeful side as Alastor. Out of all Doi's Strange Journey designs Zeus is probably my favorite due to how unique and simple it is, along with how subtlety it references a more obscure part of his character.

Zeus is not a big fan of familicide and actively punishes mortals who commit acts of patricide, matricide, infanticide and others... this is shown in the case of Tantalus who killed his son, Pelops, and offered him as food to the gods. The only one who didn't notice they were about to eat a human was Demeter because of seasonal depression. Tantalus got his punishment in Tartarus of being eternally hungry and thirsty in a lukewarm pool of water with a fruit branch on top. The fruit and the water will pull away if he tries to either drink or eat and he is stuck in the pool of water.
I feel like one of SMT 5's biggest strengths is how fine trimmed and streamlined it is. It has alot of quality of life improvements and I appreciate it for that. Another of its biggest strengths is the fact that the composer YET AGAIN caught lightning in a bottle with the soundtrack. My God the soundtrack...

I've listened to a lot of SMT music.
SMT V has the best music. Period.
My only fault with 5 is how badly it tries to be "Nocturne 2" and constantly harken back to Nocturne. It hurts its own identity with it.
It was charming at first, but the constant call backs and references became grating. They dropped the ball a bit, but the game is still fun even if it isn't narratively amazing
To be fair, it is somewhat their vision of Nocturne if not for the technology incapability at the time. They even went out their way to remaster (albeit kinda lackluster) Nocturne for that. It's definitely on purpose. A little cute as well since it means Atlus actually has a soft spot for Nocturne, lol
@@snailthelostcow63 before 5, nocturne was the only game I’d ever heard of in the series. Persona 5 got me into persona and interested in SMT, so V was first and I do plan on doing nocturne. I doubt I’ll do the others but it’s a start. I’ll probably play both series going forward unless they shit the bed.

Zeus's design since (I think) Strange Journey has been one of my favourites in SMT, and his Keraunos ability looks amazing in V
Hard agree. Zeus's design gets a lot of hate, but it's actually really great
Doi designs seem to be very polarizing in general. At least there are somes that are universally loved(Adramelech)

I had a huge crush on Zeus when I first saw him in Strange Journey Redux and now that he's in V, I love him even more! Both design and his personality really solidifies how much I adore this guys so much
Lemme just say how much I love Odin's design for smt 4 and 5. I mean the Odin that appears in most other games is just a naked guy in a cloak, so...

Easy pick for me. Khonsu is my favorite of the 4. His quest also made me have some feels to the point that I left him live. Is a pretty sweet subquest tbh. His rematch was also a spectacle for me. The design is so damn good
Yeah, a shame his questline is so missable. He really is a great character
My first reaction to him was more or less a "meh", considering how he is easily overshadowed by the other leaders at first.
Of course, doing his side quest quickly reversed my opinion. He's clearly the best of the bunch.

I'm of mixed feelings on smt 5s story. It feels very intentionally stripped back. I've seen some people guess this was because of the western backlash to apocalypse but I kinda doubt that. It seems more likely that since this game is trying to be a spiritual successor to nocturne it wanted to kinda go for that lonesome feeling where you're on your own for massive spans of time. However I don't believe this game has quite the same atmosphere as nocturne because you aren't alone, not really. I also just don't think it was the best way to go with this story.
On the other hand, I like how a lot of the world and story is expressed. For one, sidequests provide important context for the main story. I actually think this is good, it forces you to engage with the world to actually know more about it. I like when a game doesn't hand hold you but forces you to find out things for yourself. Hell there is a whole storyline that is kind of actually vastly important to two major plot characters that you can just miss if you don't care about the world.
I think it makes sense. These games are about changing the world, so it should be expected that you actually engage with that world.
Ps. It's a nice touch that all the people vying for the throne are either those who usurped creation or played a role in some creation. It's very fitting.
Yeah everything in the story feels very intentional if you look into it, but also very subdued. They did the best with the new engine and style, I bet their attention was elsewhere for a lot of development. Overall, it's an amazing game still
@@Tony4You certainly, exploring the world feels great. Each time I pick it up I remember how good playing it feels. The dungeon traversal is even more technically impressive than the last atlus gold standard of persona, and there is so much that evolved the typical smt formula. I'm very excited to see how they can build on this foundation for the future.
The demons were so well written and interesting I just wish people like yuzuru got any sort of development .

I’ve found multiple “side quests” that seem to effect the main route. SMT5 reminds me of 4 in that the exploration and world building really elevates it. I personally like 5 more than 3, but SMT4 still has the best story to me
SMT V seems like the most demon focused game in the SMT series yet. Which is kind of off-putting considering the focus marketing put on the human characters. But it's great if you're a mythology buff like us.
Yeah I tried to avoid a lot of the marketing going into it, but looking back I can see why some people were caught off guard. Oh well, it still turned out great

SMT5 made me realize I like SMT like I like Godzilla movies in that I'm here for the funny monsters and have to sleep through the boring human moments to get to them
(spoilers) I like that Zeus is bestowing blessings and divine protection left and right in the Iliad at the yearn of the pantheon and humanity alike, but in this game his 'Knowledge' human dies off-screen, unnamed, unbeknownst to Zeus. A clever way to show he doesn't have the same overlordship of war and that he's objectively lesser than he once was. Hence why he wants the throne.
My favourite was Khonsu since he was a very non-standard lead deity choice. I didn't know much about him, so this video was enlightening. I very much liked how he chose love over the temptation of power, an unusually very human segment of the late-game story. I think the most popular Bethel lead is Odin maybe, but I'll never forgive him for the mimans in his cube maze 😫

Missed opportunity of not including Amaterasu into SMT V since it would've been a nice chance have a special discussion or even side quest that if you have Amaterasu in your party, Tsukuyomi ask the player in his private office to summon her to express his apology for his murderous outburst upon Uke-Mochi for Amaterasu ask him to show proof that he did change for the better.
That could have been really interesting to incorporate the story of both gods. Would have fleshed out the character a lot more too

Yeah I think Tao is actually supposed to be Amaterasu based on her design and the constant light emanating from her, she just simply still goes by "Tao" still for sentimental reasons.
It was undoubtedly unexpecting to have Khonsu as the leader of Egypt's branch, specially since either Ra, Osiris or Horus would had been the more likely options.
Cleopatra was the leader for some reason before him too.

A major part of Khonsu (more with his second form), there was the rules of how Egyptian Gods have faces and aspects with different selves, as various roles, and names
This explains his second form called “Khonsu-Ra” as he takes his aspect of both Sun and Moon, so close enough…
Well, Ra ended up getting diabolized as Amon, so...
I like Khonsu the most. He's charismatic, wears a shit-eating grin, and is very caring.
Next is Zeus cuz I thought he was funny, then Odin for being cool, then spoilers, then Vasuki

SPOILER: I was surprised that Amaterasu didn't appear in the game. Although I don't know what goddess Tao is. I wonder if she was meant to be Izanami. Given that she resurrected and all.
Yeah I had a similar thought. Her Panagia form wears what looks like a sun crown to me, so I think Amaterasu makes the most sense, even if her Goddess of Creation form doesn’t have as strong of a motif.
I was so sure that Tao at one point was gonna be revealed as Amaterasu's knowledge. Kinda surprised she just retained her name.
Maybe the writers thought it would be awkward if Tao and Koshimizu were technically a divorced couple.

V tries to be a combination of III + Apocalypse, and while I wholeheartedly love the story, more exposition on characters could definitely be appreciated. Amazing video, I wish you would've gone into Abdiel as well and how in lore they originally decided to fall with Lucifer but then changed their mind. It's interesting Abdiel is only an Archangel but given the job of ordering the entire Angel Army by the Seraphim.

For me it’s almost like a battle between new law of deities and humanity
The law and chaos characters didn’t interest me that much compared to other games
The big emotional drive for me is that I love a lot of these deity characters and a lot of demons in SMTV are just vibing so it becomes a question of do I want them to live or do I wanna make a world for humans alone which imo is prob the best option for humans in SMT as a whole but it’s at the cost of characters I love like aogami/Tao
Typical neutral route player, putting humans on a pedestal like they're somehow more important than everything else. lol
I'm just messing with ya, although if I'm being honest, I think that a world only for humans would be the worst one, because it would be the most boring one to live in. For people who like peace, prosperity, and everyone being stunted by weakness and mortality, I could imagine it being appealing, but I much prefer a life of excitement where one has the potential to become a god if they have the will to rise to that level. That's why I prefer Chaos in every SMT game.

Atlus really searched for small SMT youtubers for this one. Sadly SMT on its own still isn't as big as the spin off series Persona, but at least you are getting recognized in some way.
Still as long as you guys keep throwing up great content, maybe FINALLY more people will give this franchise a shot.
If there's something we all can agree on, is that SMT always makes people feel interested by mythology, for me, I got curious by the deities in Persona, but thanks to the rest of SMT I got to understand how a few mythologies and religions are

Has El ever been in a shin megami game? El and Baal were chiefs before Yhwh became chief god having them in a branch would be interesting. Id imagine it would be way more personal for them considering yhwh was once apart of their pantheon and they have all since been usurped.

Question: Are the gods in this game meant to be demi-gods to the all-powerful God (notice the capitol "G" instead of lowercase on the second use of "God") who's real last name can't be said?
They ARE gods, but they were all overthrown by YHVH. The expanse, godhood, and creation are all complicated in SMT
Essentially, Yahweh did a political coup against the other gods, so they either have to be subservient to him or get diabolized, such as Baal becoming Beelzebub, Amon-Ra becoming Amon, etc. In Cleopatra's DLC quest, she says that it was her who managed to convince Bethel not to make the Egyptian gods end up like the Mesopotamian ones.

Remember to use Dampeners and any block Phys skill you have. You can do it! If have to use Apotheosis and give the strongest demons you have spells that have his elemental weakness and unload on him. He WILL go down. Also make sure you use Spyglass to see what he uses against you so you can null or resist it effectively. Another small tip is to make sure you grind enough to be at least the same level as him. You got this.
Isn't Abdiel one of the heads or the Leader of the Angels? 'cause She seems to be the most important or the one that stand united the High Gods of Bethel.
It's complicated really. She isn't a representative per se but rather the leader of the whole "angelic" operation. I omitted her since she could use her own video at some point along with some other archangels

Joking aside, great and helpful video. I remember during the Bethel meeting going "Who's that" when Khonzu started speaking for Bethel Egypt. Thankfully, his late-game quest and your video helped me appreciate him a lot more.
Now, if only I hadn't forgotten to check on Shiva before saving my clear data on my pre-final boss save ...(please don't spoil if there's anything interesting there, I'll eventually get to it).

Yeah his "true" form doesn't appear for very long so I didn't show it. The nahobino forms aren't very interesting as a whole, so I just focused on their initial appearances
one thing I don't really like is how Odin doesn't have a beard. I mean, one of his titles is "greybeard" and is always depicted as an old man, sure, the design of SMT is nice, but the lack of a beard undersells it for me
Yeah previous portrayals of him were more accurate, but they wanted to go a little over the top in the newer games. There's always next time to hope for a redesign. Hope you liked the video!

I hated Zeus's design at first because it was too weird/out there kinda like how SMT4's Lucifer and other choice demons were designed was but it grew on me a lot. He has a very powerful pose.

Your videos kick other tangential culture channels ass, mainly beacuse you dont cramp them with unnecessary details and you often are very intelligent in selecting groups of demons/personas.

I like how you mentioned several times that these gods are important to plot, but I have literally not heard of or seen any of non spoiler gods as of my 24 hours into the game and just defeating Ishtar. The story in this game has not been told very well.
I disagree. The story of smt 5 is very stripped back. This is different from told poorly. For one, the leaders of bethel are important to the plot, just like Lahmu is important to the plot. They just are not part of the chiyoda act of the story. You can however learn a little bit about just how divided the branches are through the sidequests, such as by talking to the Valkyrie who tells you the Greeks just loosed a monster that kills friend or foe. I've actually been quite enjoying how much of smt5s larger narrative is not apparent unless you actually engage with the world.
Still far from my favorite smt story. I am not personally a big fan of this style of story, it's why I don't like nocturne as much as smt 2, or strange journey or even 4. But I wouldn't call it bad story telling.
The story isnt that good but you're at the part of the game where it gets better soon after

Would be hard to attribute him to a specific region. Baal was in the Canaanite lands a LONG time ago. Not really representative of many people now
@@Tony4You I guess, but its the same with most of them no? Nobody really is worshipping any of the gods in bethel save maybe vasuki. I'm guessing that these 5 are chosen because they are the most well known mythologies in pop-culture. But yea, best region I could vaguely attribute him is the middle east/ western asia.
They explicitly make a point all of Babylon rejected being God’s minions, thus their demonization.
I'm going to try to look at the lore, but avoid the cutescenes xd

@@Tony4You Came back after beating the game just now, it was a fun dabble into the myths of the gods with Khonsu specifically being new to me. His story in SMTV and how it ties back to his Mythos was very interesting, thank you!

Liked his design because he looked like ultraman. Im kinda torn with zeus, maybe because of his long arms or his pose.

SMT5 keeps trying to be SMT3 when it suits best as a sequel to SMT4 considering YHVH is dead (Ya know, Lile how he was killed in SMT4A)
Ever since I played SMT4A I really disliked Odin's design, it looks too much like some superhero for smt in my opinion. Zeus sort of suffers from the same fate though the design is much better.
Yeah I can see why people would think he is over the top, but it still encapsulates the character fairly well

I'm a bit disappointed about odin's role in smt v, because of all the trailers of him during game development
one big missed opportunity is not having Zeus and Odin become Nahobino, with their older designs as their starting forms and their new designs as their "true" forms.
All Bethel leaders could have been nahobino'd in a rematch fight. the way it stands, we beat Zeus, Odin, (skip Vasuki and go for Shiva) and Khonsu because we were complete restored nahobinos and they were incomplete. I would rather have them restored and prove to them we were BETTER nahobinos even after they were complete with their old knowledge. We have so little student characters in the school setting, adding one per Bethel leader would have made the game less lonely.
@@Gooong I feel like all the Bethel leaders should have had their own alignment based on their mythological portrayal. in fact, I think Tsukuyomi shouldn't have had his own alignment, or perhaps even been axed entirely in favor of giving the other gods their own routes.

But then I got a different one with a slightly different description, and I decided to keep both of them in favor of traditional strength moves.
Why would I use both? Cause they look cool, duh.
When I first saw Khonsu, I was like "Who's this young dude?"
I was pretty disappointed with him however. I expected more.
My main issue is that bosses have too much hp and not enough turns. Like Zeus should have had 4 turns and 1/3rd less hp. Maybe make it so gathering Magastuhi takes more than 1 turn if that's an issue.
And all quality of life imprisonments that 4 and 4a automatically came with are not only assessable via Glory which makes the early game a slog of fight and run back to the layline, rinse and repeat.
And if instead of having a Layline system, I'd have liked it if smt 5 protagonist just closed his eye's and "focused".
The support skills being .... Genuinely worthless unless tied to something else (like Fang Breaker and Golden Apples do). Maybe make them as strong as the old support skills but cost almost nothing in mp (the single costing 2 or 4 for example) and every 9 levels they last an additional round. Every proficiency in the support element adds an additional round, every minus removes a round to a minimum of 3.
Not to mention that the gane would flow better if we got Aogami Essences from killing Absences or story encounters (like getting type 3 from Lupin Garou would have been cool) instead of random drops.
the bethel leaders was the greatest concept in Smt, but a bad execution(just like the entire story)
Konshu is a side Quest and the others are just bosses except for Odin who gets interactions with Artemis and Demeter Quest
