Angels are much more interesting than you might think. If you've been watching smt lore long enough you'll know this, but if there's one thing I've learned from making this series and playing the smt and persona games, it's that there's always more to learn, especially about angels and demons. Even in my own religion and the entirety of the abrahamic faiths as a hole, there is so much to learn, even for a person who grew up with it. When it comes to demons, it seems there is an endless treasure trove of unique, and horrifying entities. The word itself brings to mind something unique to each person that hears it. The word angel though elicits less fantastical imagery. Usually an angel is seen as nothing more than a human with lily white wings and a halo, and to those who dig a little bit deeper, maybe they are aware of the biblically accurate angels floating around. The most common depictions are rarely the most accurate however. With Abrahamic religions being so prolific and inspiring many other spiritual practices, there’s much more to the holy side of the divine spectrum than many might initially think. Let’s go over just a few angelic beings, from many religions, that have been forgotten to time and learn more about the roles they serve in each one. Going over Aniel, Kazfiel, Camael, and the Zoroastrian Sraosha, my mind feels like it was expanded tenfold with divine light.

Eh he wasn't too difficult if you leveled enough. Only took me a couple tries as with most bosses.

Sad too see that Uriel got the short end of the stick. No wonder Michael, Raphael and Gabriel ended up being the popular ones thanks to them being mentioned prominently in biblical scriptures.

To be far, I've never met a person named Uriel but Michaels Raphaels and Gabriels are everywhere. So maybe that tidbit has something to do with it.

@@thegeneral4943 The Book of Enoch, and the Book of Tobit; he's also mentioned in the Qur'an (not by name, but implied to be him).
I like the SMT design for Sraosha, feeling very alien which I like (well except for Angel and the SMT 4's Archangels being exceptions). Plus who is that Zoroastrian devil next to Sraosha because good god he looks cool.
Yeah when side by side, the Zoroastrian demons all look really cool. No idea where the idea came from, but it's great
@@Tony4You all of the Zoroastrian deities have insects as a motif for them although I'm not sure why. You can mainly tell because of all the insect wings though.
Oh yeah, the demons next to sraosha are SMT IF's depiction of Ahriman on the right, and to the left is Armaiti (debut design from soul hackers)
I sorta saw it as a way to contrast with the christian angels, like how Melchizedeck is a different style
He also has large ears lending to his role as listener, he also had the rame red cloth as his artistic depictions.
Sraosha is easily the coolest angel in the series design wise

And the amount of information he digs up. Like I look up an obscure angel/demon and don't find much (granted- my search is like 5 minutes or less of google because I just try to find something breif). Yet Tony dig's up entire books worth of information on these guys

We definitely need more Zoroastrianism in SMT. Christianity is cool, but the Zoroastrian mythology is just so much more compelling of a base for designs and stories. A lot more cosmic and astral in nature. I'd love to see Sraosha (my favourite demon design) as a major character and some of the Zoroastrian gods as villains.

I think it is because Christianity insofar as ideas for fiction goes is very legalistic. Christianity is a highly legalistic religion, which essentially means that to use it at all you are operating within confines that if you break it is no longer Christianity. SMT goes far beyond the confines.
While religions which are more mystic lend themselves better to fiction, this is why norse mythology is so good in fiction. It is highly mystical, but also has a distinct physical presence that makes it alluring in a fictional setting much like the Greek/Roman mythos.
Peacocks are known in Christianity as symbols of the sin of pride so it would make sense that a prideful angel would be depicted with peacock feathers on their eyebrows, arms, and the centerpiece of their sword if you look closely

Technically angra mainyu is an original character. He's just a regular guy posing as the zoroastrianism devil unwillingly by his people to the point that he became a heroic spirit.

Camael having armour that looks close to a Power’s is very appropriate, give. His station. Very nice touch.

About the whole "bibically accurate angels" schtick, angels, being spiritual beings, have no form. They can assume any form they must. Ergo, they can appear as the beings described by Ezekiel, or as humans with wings and a halo (tbf, an angel in either appearance would be intimidating enough).

I really like how smt has one classification of demons for the ranks of angels and one for specific angels. Hopefully you can talk about Azrael if you make a part two (assuming you haven't already talked about him in a different video]
Yellow is also the color associated with betrayal as it’s a reminder of disciple Judas so kazfiel being yellow and his name possibly being translated as he who lies to God could have a symbolic meaning
Outstanding work! There's so much involved in Zoroastrianism that we don't know, and what we do know should have a lot more discussion than it gets. You did amazing work with your research. Fun fact: of all people, Freddie Mercury was a Zoroastrian, though he probably wasn't an active worshipper most of his life. Still an interesting historical note.
My only wish was that Atlus was making a new game for you to talk about, maybe with some new demons. Sure, there are a ton yet to get to with lore aplenty (Alilat is a personal favorite), but it would be great if the dark gods at Atlus would gift their community with something to push them further up the charts. Instead, we're getting an $80 digital-only release of three games I still have on my DS that I have no intention of rebuying. Solid business strategy!

To be fair, Etrian Odyssey III never got re-released before, and got insanely expensive. Re-releasing the original versions of the other two, rather than their remakes though? Yeah, that's a bruh moment.

I'd love to see smt depiction of Turkic mythology. There are a lot of material out there. Erlik, for example(devil figure in Turkic mythology)would suit well with the series.

Camael immediatelly threw me some Date a Live vibes and how that series works with the Sephiroth e the Qliphoth (even if the core anime is some harem fanservice fantasy...)
Anyway! The designs for Aniel and Kazfiel actually surprised me in how you can take the "accurate" Seraphim idea and apply it without it being creepy and unnerving. Bonus points for the artist for that interpretation, I liked it a lot.
The Zoroastric entities have a very outlandish design but they are not alien enough(at least for me) to the point of being... huh... "Chuthullu"-ish levels of alien and different. In a way, you can say that while the world moved away from Zoroatrism, our interpretation of their entities got "distorted".
Also, one thing I just noted, Aniel and Kazfiel have a very "metalic" detail in their arms (I'm talking about the ball joint on their elbow). This link them to Metatron and Sandalphon (at least when it comes to their SMT depiction) and this got my theory gears turning. As far I know, only these four angels have these metallic designs. I wonder if they have something in common? Metatron and Sandalphon have, but these 2... I don't know enough to draw enough conclusions.
As someone that loves the mythology of angels, I greatly appreciate this video and your content as a whole.

The SMT II version of Haniel is my favorite. It's an adorable design.
Maybe the Zoroastrian designs being more alien is to help separate them from the Christian angels, to make it clear that they are a separate group of entities while giving them a sort of unique theming of their own

I just recently finished that game and while I loved it, I absolutely despise Ouroboros and Mem Aleph for forcing me to grind so much.
Camael is super cool, the angel of war, how more epic something can be! Btw, because of this and because he associated with planet Mars, his sprite in SMT II is recolored one of Ares! Sure, this is economy, but a smart one!

Okay, I thought this was a video on SMT creature design. I didn't go into this expecting to learn about the design of Rin from Catherine Full Body.
Right down to the Metatron connection, given the rough similarities between his brother's appearance and the depiction of Metatron in SMT.
Sraosha desing looks like something out of a Del Toro movie. All of these are Kazuma Kaneko desings right?

Why are angels sometimes referred to as "demons" in the SMT games?
A quick google search gave me a glimpse of why: Translation issues.
Demons in SMT are refered as 悪魔 (Akuma), which roughly translate as "Evil Spirit".
"Demon" is a word that can be used to refer to Evil creatures and spirits. It's that we associate that word with the Devil and Hell (in oppose to the Angels).
Maybe "Monster" would be a better word but now it's ingrained in SMT to change it.
Technically all beings other than natural creatures on earth are referred to as demons, despite their actual denomination. Same with Fairies and the like

Zoroastrianism is something I really heard about through games emabarassingly enough, through SMT and Sid Meiers Civilizatrion in particualr, when you start doing a bit of cursory reading on the religion you really start to see the syncretism between Abrahamic religions and Zoroastrianism where parts of myth have been inscribed into literature or absorbed into other religions.

Angels in general aren't really a subject with much information. The beings of the heavenly realm aren't touched upon much,except for the 9 orders of God, ophanim, cherubim, Yada Yada. So I'm surprised we even know about them. The demons touched upon this video. Correct if you want you are free to do so.
