    Just got this today, didn't have a clue how to use it.
    Everything is easy when you know how!
    Thankyou for the great video tutorial/ review.
    I'm looking forward to sharpening my old beat up chisels and blunt plane blades now.👍

    another issue that may present itself in time is the knife blade guide; as you run the blade over the guide, the blade may cut the guide causing a weakness and eventual failure..just a thought.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  6 лет назад

      And a very good one Andy, I thought exactly that, once you start to cut a sharp edge on the knife, specially as it's a bit jagged, it's not gonna take long before you end up sawing through the guide, but of a dippy design really!

    • @HalfdeadRider
      @HalfdeadRider 6 лет назад

      No need for the guide anyway in my opinion :)

    I used to work at ships service, Merchant Marine Academy Great Neck N.Y. supplying recruits with all their gear. From paper to underwear EVERYTHING! Each recruit got that same knife, in the U.S. it's called a Rigging Knife. It just reminded me of how old I am!

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  6 лет назад

      Damn that's the name Gary, a rigging knife! I'd clean forgotten that... my grandfather even told me that when he gave it to me, and yeah, don't age catch up with ya all of a sudden lol

    Appreciate the effort Del, not the most interesting and maybe a bit long - penny had it right @25.50 ;)... but I'm 100% with you on ease. Have you seen the Lansky sharpeners? They're quite pricey, but similar versions are easily obtained from Aliexpress for cheap. They work best IME with kitchen and bigger knives, but can do pocket knives. It also comes with different grits/grades, but hitting those exact angles it what makes them great.
    With that people often say "just learn to use a whet stone properly", but the reality is once you've sharpened all your knives properly once, they don't need to be resharpened often enough to keep your skills... honed. Of course if you're a chef using a small number of blades all day you will develop and maintain that skill, but cooking 5-7 meals a week? Get real.

    Best thing I had is a kit that clamps blade. Has stones of different grits to use starting low going up to 2000 grit. It's pretty quick. Few minutes to get blade sharp and polished. Think was about 30 quid on evil bay. One stone alone isn't really much good

    • @3charactersforkhandle
      @3charactersforkhandle 6 лет назад

      Edit: I think that is a knock-off of a different "system". The name escapes me.
      The Lansky is an original / proper design. It's the one with the coloured plastic backs. But it is pricy and although many rave about it its still a fair bit of cash for what could be a punt, so I went for a knock-off. One of the threads on mine wasn't great, but I just fixed it and it was so cheap I bought a 2nd for my dad at the same time. Idk if it's true, but some say the stones are superior. If that IS the case then you just replace the knock-off ones with the originals as they wear. Realistically once you've got your knives in good shape you're not going to be using the course grits again, so it's likely to only be the cost of a couple of the high# stones.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  6 лет назад +1

      Oh wow, Christopher that you so much for your input mate, it's wonderful to hear a logical feedback from a professional, as a carpenter you'll know the importance of sharp chisels, and am sure you saw those excuses I own for chisels lol, they truly were £1 for a pack of 6, so they are proper junk, but I was amazed how razor sharp it made them, just by grinding the steel to the right angle, it grinds upwards away from the edge, so zero burr on the underside, but they were truly sharp enough to shave the hairs off your arm, and I didn't even know about the double beveled edge, as none of them came with that when I bought them... and as for the plane, it's another of my Grandfather's tools, and I've only ever used it on household DIY, but it made it razor sharp again! Thanks again for your feedback, it's wonderful to get an endorsement of the trade!

      Thanks Ollie wow, Penny works very hard at it, and does a lot of the post production too... like I said in the video, this really isn't designed for knives, I get the impression they've included that little clip to widen it's uses and make it more sellable, in reality knives should be hones on a stone, I think we all know that!

    20 degree is the best angle of a knives that may be why it fells a bit jagged. a steal will hone the bade to finish them off

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  6 лет назад

      I think you're right mate, it did feel like quite a steep angle, but the tool doesn't offer any shallower edge, tbh I can't imagine why you'd grind a knife as opposed to stoning it, unless you were putting the first bevel on a thick bladed hunting knife, and then you'd make a proper jig for it, it really was a bit of a fail on the knife side... I've cleaned them up on n oil stone now and they're perfect... but I was amazed at what it did for the scissors !

    Another comprehensive and very helpful demo. Thanks, Del & Penny (it's good to hear your dulcit tones again, M'lady).
    My own seaman's knife is at least 38yrs old and, although sharp, has been butchered to be so, so this device has a lot to offer. I should add that this knife has been an everpresent part of my biking toolkit and, as such, deserves to be kept in tip-top condition.
    The chisel sharpener is a godsend because I've abused my chisels for decades and they deserve proper treatment after all this time, and, after all, you can't go wrong for £21,surely?
    This channel is priceless. Del and Penny I thank you 👍

    • @Moonfleet41

      Thanks so much Keith, its interesting that you've had to get rough with your knife too in order to cut an edge on it.. before this i gave up a long time ago trying to sharpen it.. its still not really that good for knifes, as it doesn't hold the blade at a fixed angle tp get a consistent cut.. maybe much longer knives, but not there pocket sized blades.. Thanks again for your kind and loyal support, its always good to hear from you buddy.. take care and have a good weekend.. D&Px (Penny says hi !)

      Certainly for the money, I agree, probably wouldn't pay much more for it, as I wouldn't use it very often, but these days even when cheap tools let you down, it's inconvenient to buy new ones when you're in the middle of a job, so could to be able to knock an edge on them when you need them!

      Exactly that mate, it took just seconds to put a perfect primary and secondary angle on a buggered ol' chisel, well worth the money!

  • @JapsDmz
    @JapsDmz 6 лет назад

    The degree of the tip is not as important as keeping the two sides even and making sure the leading edge is always higher than the trailing edge and no high spots in between. Even if you get the angle slightly diffrent to the " specified angle" it really isn't as important as the other two.
    In all honesty it's really not that hard to learn the feel of grinding them on a stone wheel.
    It's just a bit of practice and you will definitely surprise yourself.
    But the cheap plastic bit sharpeners out there really are terrible.
    Just a bit of practice.
    You will soon have sharp and easy cutting bits.

  • @loganmedia1142

    I learned to sharpen a blade correctly on a stone and frankly it was a waste of time. The amount of hassle involved in getting the gear out, holding the knife at the correct angle and so on is simply not worth the result. Yes, the knife is very sharp afterwards, but I found using a tool to assist made the job quicker with same resulting sharpness. Not this particular tool though.

    Sorry Del, it looks like you sold your soul. As you mentioned those company you advertise are your sponsors. As for the review it's ok but it doesn't mean there isn't anything better on the market but you only advertise Recon and Sealey because as you mentioned they are your sponsors. Very disappointing.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  6 лет назад

      Sold my soul..! Hardly mate,, i made it clear what i thought of it, the blade sharpening side is pretty useless, and its little more than a good wood chisel jig for the DIY user....but for twenty quid, where else can you buy a spinning wetstone ..! you can even use it for screw drivers. i made it clear that there are proper ways for professionals to sharpen tools, and never said "there isn't anything better on the market".. (feel free to send us a link mate, happy to review you chosen option)... As for sponsors mate, the world of marketing has woken up to RUclips, and we get stuff thrown at us every week... some of it pointless crap i wouldn't look twice at...99% of it i turn down.. but this made me think twice so i fancied looking at it.. i made what i saw as an honest review mate, warts and all. ... And as for advertising, you need to wake up to the world mate, without it there would be no MotoGP, no F1, no Premier League, no Olympics, no NASCAR,... in fact nothing that we watch every day hasn't been touched in some way by advertising.. and those who berate and slander it, are usually those not getting it..(and never likely to either..!!!)

      @MrRafal0989 6 лет назад +2

      Del, I have no issue with your review. Actually I was surprised you pointed out the bits that didn't work. But the fact there is no other brands to review only Recon and Sealey is hard to believe. It took me 5min to find the same product but cheaper from 2 different suppliers and if you wanted save money for your viewers that what you should mention. When I said "you sold your soul" I referred to your clip from some time ago when you said that sponsoring would be last thing for you to do but it seams not a case.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  6 лет назад

      Oh I see mate, well tbh I had this master plan, ages ago, to try and get companies rounded up to send us competing products for the same job, but in the end it's practically impossible ... people won't just send you goods to test for free when so many people on You Tube these days are being nothing but destructive and obnoxious, it's putting companies off being generous as they used to be , and I don't blame them really... but we've built up some trust with RECON, Russ Gratton, one of the owners, is a friend of mine, they're a small, single unit facility that sells mainly to the electrical trade , he's a fellow biker, and am happy to work with him cos' RECON isn't the brand of the tools, he's just a supplier... MultiSharp is a brand and yes, available from lots of places, most people go straight to Amazon anyway , even if it's a penny cheaper... I just made the point that if the reviews we give get RECON a few sales then that is a bit of reciprocal respect, but the guys there know full well what people are like, we live in an Amazon world now and they will undercut any product by a penny and then put small companies out of business, it was just some respect for a small firm that was willing to send us a tool for testing.. As for Sealey, we dont't 'promote' anything from them any more, again, too much insulting and obnoxious trolling has put them off like most of the bigger companies... RUclips themselves are sick of it, and as it continues to get worse its why many of the bigger YT creators have now left the tube for good... what a shame aye.. the minority always spoil it for everyone... Have a good weekend mate, ride safe.. Del.

      Thanks Del for taking your time and explaining the situation. I do understand it and probably would do the same myself. There is noting wrong with helping friend and I'm big fan of supporting small businesses. I was bit concerned that you turning into heartless advertising YT channel and lost that goal you set up on the beginning to be 100% independent. I didn't mean to insult you in my comments just I'm long time subscriber and I don't want your channel to drift (in my opinion) in wrong direction. But that's only my opinion.

      @Moonfleet41  6 лет назад

      Hi again my friend, thank you so much for that kind and understanding reply... many of us intend when we set out to be independent and do our own thing, but this stuff is so expensive to keep going, making videos isn't cheap, cameras, mics, editing equipment, even having to upgrade to a big iMac to use iMovie, was a silly expense, but it has made a difference... so when a little help comes along, you just take it, because you're a mug if you don't... the only people bleating about it these days seem to be those who don't have it and wish they did, once again, if free stuff is on offer, you're a mug not to take it...and I can assure you my old mate, I will never turn in to Barry Scott from Cilitbang, if I really don't like something from the off, then I usually refuse it, but the stuff I do review is because it looks like it works in principle, it's affordable and looks like it might help us mortals who aren't expert engineers... take it easy buddy and have a great week, D&Px

    nice Review Del, Its always handy to have a tool sharpener around, and although the price is cheap it looks ok,I have a whetstone and on some tool its really hard to get the correct angle.
    Nice work mate,

      Cheers Dave, I think you're right, this little tool does give you the exact angle to grind a chisel, etc., and it's cheap as chips!

    Nice informative review, you two.
    Glad to see the lovely Penny is back in harness (so to speak), and feeling "a bit better".
    Hope that very soon turns/turned into feeling VERY MUCH better, Penny.
    And now that you have that blade & tool sharpener to hand, Del, you can restore all Penny's 'best kitchen scissors' to their former, unsbused glory. 😜
    Take care you two.

And you're right, I am always wondering where my stuff has gone, knives, acetone, scissors, you name it, all appears later in the garage... hmmm! lol Thanks so much for your kind message, really lifted my day, have a great week yourself, Pennyx

    Wow, there some edgy comments in here. For a guy who spends a lot of time working with wood, no this isn't something they would need. We do it by hand. I sharpen my knives by hand as well. But for a guy who doesn't know anything about sharpening, yeah it's not a bad product. As for you selling out? Really? A company sends you something, you give an honest review and that is selling out? If that is the case, then every professional athlete and actor has sold out. Every musician that gets instruments handed to them must be a sell out. Or those motorcycle racers who get corporate sponsors with free motorcycles and factory mechanics. The people in the motorcycle industry that sell out are the writers. They give good reviews to pieces of junk so they have access to the industry. That is selling out. A company handing you something and saying, what do you think and giving an honest review? That's not selling out. That's giving an opinion. Go to the grocery store and a demonstrator hands you something to try. You like it and buy it and tell a friend or two. Did you sell out? Or did you give an opinion? Just my take on it.

      Totally get what you're saying mate, and agree with every word... I think the problem is that a great deal of You Tube criticism is driven by jealousy, and especially when it comes to the possibility that you got something fro free, and they didn't... you're dead right, an opinion is valid as long as it's reasonably honest, it's when it descends in to insult and criticism it starts to lose it's relevance, too many people just don't know where to draw the line!

    Another great little tool review, just goes to show that if you follow the instructions correctly it's possible to achieve good results and, for £20 it wouldn't take long to get your money back. Nice one Dell and Penny.

      Hi buddy, don't be mistaken, they're not our followers, our viewers and followers are like yourself, polite and well mannered, even in criticism, the people who turn the air blue and get insulting, they are the viewers of a very different fraternity of You Tube creator...

      I usually refrain from commenting but I guess i'll chime in :)Well, I watch and enjoy both you and "the "different creator". Im not gonna comment on the whole situation since I don't really care as a "bystander", I just enjoy the content of both and chime in in the comments when I feel the need to in a decent manner(be it criticism or not) :). Careful to not generalize too much, even some of "his" viewers can behave ;)Cheers!
