Had one of these for years and have used it without much success.... until now. Just sharpened an 8mm HSS drill and on trying it was like the proverbial hot knife through butter. Given myself another job now though - sharpening all my other drills!! Easy to follow demonstration, well explained. Thanks

I have had this drill sharpener in the garage for near on 15+ years and never used. I found it today in the garage covered in dust. It's been cleaned up and I came in to watch the reviews on this sharpener. Thanks for the review Del and looking forward tomorrow to sharpening the many blunt and worn out drill bits in my tool box. Great stuff and thanks.

Your video saved my day to get a project finished after all my bits went blunt! I have never been great at sharpening bits on a grinder. I always tended to discard bits once they are blunt, however I had this drill sharpening kit for many years, but never got round to using it. Your instructions worked like a charm, and in my opinion are much better than the official instructions / video, which I think are poor. Thanks a lot for uploading this.

If you put 2 nuts so the flats are together you get the perfect angle for a sharp drill. Weld to together and you have a perfect way to check the drill angle is right. A little tip I learned from an engineer. I used one of them for years until said engineers taught me how to sharpen drills by hand. They really do the job and have been about for 30 odd years

Excellent video. I've had one of these sharpeners for about 12 years and was sceptical about how well something made of plastic would perform and last. But it's a very clever design, works brilliantly and is still working perfectly after sharpening thousands of drills over that time. I'll probably need to replace it sometime in the next few years as the stones are wearing down, but will definitely buy the same thing again. Works much better than the sharpener made from metal which I previously used as the angles are much more accurate and consistent.

  • @pootin1312
    @pootin1312 5 лет назад +5

Firstly, before I stretch the boundaries of this topic, there are 3 angles we need to use when sharpening drill bits; 90° for plastics and perspex, 118° for generally everything else, but 135° is the angle recommended for steel and stainless steel. I thought it important that the other angles be included here to make your vid more complete.
Still, thanks for the vid. Like a few others and you yourself have said, "companies only show vids on basics setup of tools and not detailed vids on their capabilities," so thanks for the 'hands-on show" - This reply is now quite long, but, it's what I consider to be valuable info for people choosing to take on this endeavour. Akso, I have a much better, self powered drill bit, chisel, scissor & knife sharpener which was only $24 AUD, about £13, and it's capable of taking 1mm bits, however it is restricted in size to 8mm, so I guess it might be a trade off.
That said, with a decent protractor, one can easily acquire the skill of sharpening bits on a bench grinder in no time. I'm a mechanic and, in Sydney, it's a 4-year in-shop and 3 year part time college training program to acquire a trade, and although sharpening drills was not part of the knowledge required for the trade, it was something taught so one could keep drills sharp until the end of their life; 25-40mm long. When we were shown this, it was a 10 minute display and something to be practiced in your own time. If the skill was practiced and owned especially if incorporating the use of a "golly stone," one could also do chisels, plane blades, gasket scrapers, et al.
I have always been able to sharpen all of my own tools until recently because my eyesight is failing; failing as in, I now need 400% mag just to read my Playboy. I can still do 6-8mm up, but with the smaller ones I now need the help of a machine.
Still, a keen eye, a good flat grinding wheel and some practice, and it's a skill that you can never forget.
All the best, I look forward to seeing more of your work.
    Cheers.
    😎

Hey Malco, good to hear from you mate, you'll be glad you made the investment, and it's one of those things that will pay for itself in due course... it takes a little practice to get it right, but you'll see, once you use the drill bit afterwards, it does make a big difference and will definitely save you buying new drills before their time!

Lovely. Glad I've got this on order. It looks a little complicated to set up, so I wonder if that's why it has a lot of bad reviews. People just not setting it up properly.
UPDATE: Tried this out yesterday. I'm currently restoring a 50 year old bike. One of the lower shock bolts was snapped and completely seized inside the frame. Theres no way I would have been able to drill it out with my dull drill bits.
It took me a little while to figure out how to use this device but the instructions were very clear. It worked really well and I was able to get through about 2cm of seized bolt and drill it out to about 11mm. Which would just not of happened if I didn't have this sharpener!

Just bought one so many blunt drill bits.........ADVICE Best way to check the 118 degree angle is TWO hexagonal nuts ( normal nuts) put flats together they form an angle 118 degrees learnt this at trade school back in the 60's better than a piece of paper GOOD video by the way.

On the strength of your demostration of the chisel sharpener which worked brilliantly I have now also bought myself Multi-sharps drill bit sharpener. I could read the instructions but reading instructions is not my thing so your demonstration is once again invaluable.

Thanks! Bought one at Screwfix, and after your video, sharpened dozens of drills. Tested them with excellent results. I like the way the cam produces a curve from the cutting edge. I'm sure my more expensive model I had in earlier years, where you stuck your drill down a hole, didn't do this. And it didn't take long to work out some short cuts in the 'official' sharpening process to half the time it took.

Love the safe way that you work. You obviously do a risk assessment before working with tools as is clearly evident as I seen that you always wear safety specs while sharpening and using the drill bits. Your review, explanation and detailed demonstration is most definitely the best on You Tube about this awesome drill sharpener. The manufacturer should sponsor you for positive marketing you have done for them. This is the best value for money tool that that actually works that I own. I highly recommend this awesome tool for all DIY guys. Many thanks and kind regards. Stay Safe Dave from South Africa

Hi Dave, thank you for that kind feedback Sir, obviously it's not the best quality tool in the world, but all tools are a balance. A balance of cost in relation to how often we'll use it, and in relation to have effective it is... and you're right, us home guys will maybe only use this very occasionally, but when we do, it works and does the job and the money it saves us pays for the tool pretty quickly, so a wise buy... keep safe my broer, Del

Buying one, would prefer a wet grinder, but one can adjust the drill speed. The majority of my bits cost more than this device. Bench grinder like you said... ,but the stones need also need to be dressed correctly, but still no speed control or wet option on a normal bench grinder. Great review, thank you for it!

Good approach and detailed instructional video on how to set this device up and get going. Unfortunately the device does not seem to be sharpening correctly. It would appear that its removing too much of the cutting edge and not leaving enough relief. @13:21 you can hear a droning sound, the speed here is a bit fast for mild steel . When you see chips from cutting mild steel thats the hint that the drill is dulling or its time to adjust your speeds and feeds. The drill is generating heat and not doing the job efficiently. That being said if the drills have been sharpened correctly by this device maybe a lower speed and a downward pressure to suit might help the cut. A nice even swarf that runs evenly up both flutes tells that everything is set correctly. Overall theses devices struggle to maintain repeatability over their useful lifespan.

Awesome, I took my first walk round Lidl that they just opened near us, and was actually surprised to find some unique and fascinating things, I found a socket set for £1 which is handy for keeping the door open in my shed, I found a plastic grandfather clock about a foot tall, a torch that clips on your forehead (very handy!), and it seems, they still sell Nesquik! What more could you want, I'm sold on Lidl!!

Just a tip for you Del from an aerospace engineer of 34 years, the bigger diameter the drill the slower you run the spindle, HSS in stainless try at a surface speed of 16 meters. So a good formula would be Vc1/(vc2 X pi) vc1 = surface speed, vc2 = drill diameter pi = 3.142 eg
    for a 12mm drill, 16000 / (12 X 3.142)
Try at 22 meters for steel ie 22000 for vc1
6 meters for titanium ie 6000 for vc1
36 meters for aluminium is 36000 for vc1
Running a drill too fast will shorten the life of a drill by generating heat build up on the cutting edge and ultimately leads to excessive wear due to the edge breaking down
If you have a bench grinder keep it dressed and maintain a good corrner on the wheel, as this can be used to thin the centre of the drill web if needed.

Thank you very much for the insight Gavin, it's great to get some help from the experts... take care, much appreciated!

    • @grlaycock67
      @grlaycock67 6 лет назад

No idea why but part of the original comment has gone missing.
The example for a 12mm drill in stainless 316L should be as follows
      16000/((12X3.142)
      (12X3.142) = 37.704
      16000/37.704= 424.35
This gives a spindle speed for a 12mm drill of 420rpm
Sorry this was missing, just substitute surface speeds in VC1 for different materials & drill diameters in VC2
      Have a peachy day.

Hi Adam.. glad you found it useful mate.. its a little flimsy TBH, it'd be great if it was a metal construction, but with a bit of practice you can put a useful edge on a worn out drill again..
