I am a machinist/toolmaker and will never use this jig. Agree, it does drill the hole in the video, however, as the drilling process started I can see that the drill is not done properly. Unfortunately, this is not the correct way !
Another great advancement!.. One that shares it free!.. To help the average mechanic do better job sharpening his bits!.. Good man!..deserves everyone's support!.. How many just go shopping to get new bits!.. every time they need a bit to just do the job???...
I am almost 84. I have watched thousands of RUclips videos on topics from an atom to zebra fish. My grandfather was a wheelwright in West Virginia I have a natural affinity for working with wood. This video, by a knowledgable craftsman, is the Best Presentation I have ever seen on the Internet. Congratulations & Thanks!
Thanks Jim. It is always gratifying to hear that someone finds useful information on my channel. Thanks for watching and taking your time to write. Keep in touch and thanks. Allan
I've watched a number of videos on this subject tonight and yours is the simplest and most effective for an old codger like me. Thank you very much. Going to watch the one on how to make the wooden thingy with the groove in it now.
@RavenShield78 Thanks for the tip. I actually made mine out of a bit of scrap steel and put a couple of clips on it so that it's always in the same place when I attach it to the grinder. I might be able to grind a bit off the back edge so that it tips up a little at the front.
THANK YOU ! I've read a few articles on bit sharpening and viewed the countless pictures they contained, but there's nothing like watching it being done . Great explanation and very good views of the process.
Simple, Efficiency, You work well and clean with 59 degrees and 0 degrees in the center, wish you the best inventions and thank you for your contribution.
Real easy jig to make and use. I have been sharpening my drill bits by hand for the last 42 years however my eye sight is definitely not what it was, your jig will make things much easier
This is the best video on the topic. An easy to do sure fire way. You will always get the angle right because of the jig. Also I like how the effectiveness of sharpening is proven by actually drilling into metal. Thanks for sharing.
Precise sharpening guide i will make one for me cause im using drill bits often im a goldsmith and also a welder hobbiest this will help a lot thank you very much for sharing. More power to you.
Excellent, I have tried, jigs, (both shop made and commercial) and free handing, but this is THE clearest and seemingly simple method I have seen. Thank you for sharing. You are a natural teacher.
I have used a lot of drill bit jigs, but yesterday, July 30 2014, I watched your video and made the jig you had. My bits are now sharp. Thanks. Gene Frost, TX
Thanks Gene. I am in the middle of big steel fab project and have been using the jig constantly. What I like is there is no fuss or setup. I am glad to hear you found some useful information on my channel. Allan
Thanks.. He was my american bulldog Diesel sadly he passed away a couple of years ago.. Big softie, very loyal & loving breed of dog.. i'll defiantly get another one in the future. I've just placed an order for you're sharpening jig, cant wait to try it out on some of my older chisels :)
Yup great video... I live up in the mountains, with no city electric power Just solar and small generators...to make things. This is just up my street...perfect... So...many thanks for such an informative video...as so used to doing sharpening by eye and freehand...👍👍👍👍
Thanks for this video I love it when obviously talented people give usefull and simple advise without all the any pretence Like everyone else Im of to sharpen a box of bits Thanks mate
I watched this video years ago and always had it in the back of my mind. A couple days ago I was drilling through steel and the bit wasn't going anywhere. I decided to just touch it up on the grinder and see what happens. I did it free hand and was sloppy but it literally took 15 seconds. Went back to the workpiece and was drilling through the steel like it was pine. Perfect, long spiral shavings. My mind was blown. Had to come back to see the jig. Now I see you're offering it for sale. I could make my own but will probably buy one just to show my support. Thank you!
A very helpful video. Thanks for your honesty about misplacing your sharpening device. I now know, it is not just me that misplaces a tool or neat device that I built to make jobs easier. Carry On Sir!
Thanks for this! I build one and it works super well! I never successfully sharpened any drills before, but it works now. I found that cutting the relief is most important. I made my jig so the sled has a grove and the bench grinder now has a channel to slide along.
Allen you have one of the most in depth channels on the tube. If it is your subject matter you cover the bases well. Your videos are jam packed with information and you are well aware of the safety aspect. You don't shove safety down my throat but give me the dangers and risks. Thank you for all you do.
I an very glad to see kind of men like you thats helping people all over the word . God bless you ... this vide showing the best way to tech how to sharp ... thanks again .
You've "sold me" after completing google i was convinced the answer to my lack of free hand sharpening tallent was a fancy sharpening machine, as soon as im well enough again to go down the shed ill make your jig!
Thanks. What I really like about this setup is that it can be done right in the middle of a drilling operation with practically no time wasted. Stop, touch up and get back at it. Thanks for watching. Allan
There was a chain called “Tool Depot” that I used to take my drill bits to for sharpening. They have now gone out of business. Your video got me trying this on my own and this has worked out wonderfully. Thanks for sharing this video and your great insights.
Love it!! I've had a drill doctor for many years, don't use it because it's just too slow. I've got one grinder with wheels just for drills, but never have been able to get them consistently right. This is just too simple and too effective. I've got many dozens of bits which need to be sharpened at any given time. Putting a lip on the edge of the plywood to guide it at 90 degrees on the tool rest would help.
Your simple application showing how to sharpen drill bits of deferential size really excited, thanks you for sharing your talent/know how once ang. Thanks from phil.isabelcar.
Excellent. 👍😄🏻 I was surfing for to procurement drill grinding attachment. While i got this vdo. Good idea. Tomorrow i will try on this. Thanks a lot. 🙏🏻
Looks like I will be making one of your jigs thank you for making this video to help others a very Happy New Year to you and your family Regards Steve UK London
I finely get it I have just been buying new bits after new bits could never get it right I did it this way and it works not only works but it works every dame time great video I am now the sharpest tool in the box thanks to you that is.
wow wow wow fantastic jig indeed..ive been sharpening my drill bit for years free hands...get frustrated at times..after watching your excellent video,,im amaized trully amaided....its perfect...you a guru man ...indeed million thanks frm me,,,
Nice, I have a 3 lb coffee can half full of broken and burnt bits , headed to the shop to find my protractor.😀. I used a lot of bed frames to make things that are free at the local dump thay are very hard and strong but hard on drill bits. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Thank you for the jig idea. Made one and promptly fixed some drills that were broken in half and now they are just shorter than they were new, but cutting nicely.
Sharpening broken drills only works marginally. This is because the web thickness increases the further you are from the designed cutting edge. This forces the larger non cutting web to have to plunge through the material or requires a larger pilot hole.
Thanks David. I know this is not a precision machine shop method, but just a technique for us small shops to get our work done with what we have without breaking the bank. Thanks for watching. It is always gratifying when I hear from people who find some useful information on my channel. Allan
a very good instructional video for the home handyman, good focus on all the elements required for maintaining a sharp edge on your bits, thanks Woodman.
outstanding I really like seeing stuff done the old fashioned way good for the brain not to many old schoolers around who can do this and to many machines out there that claim to do a good job some can with practice but who has all that time when there work to do thanks this would have been how my grand father would have sharpened a bit all though I have seen him with out a peace of wood I like your idea and I really like your idea with the wood
Thanks Jack. I just wanted to share this so guys can freshen up all those dull bits we all accumulate without having to spend money. My motto is there is no twist drill bit I can't make cut one more time. This method shows it is possible. Thanks for taking the time write such a positive comment. Allan
I like this simple jig. I'm not bad with free-hand now after 30 years of practice but I might still make myself a jig like this. BTW, your largest drill would probably have cut fine even without coolant if you slowed the RPM's a little.
Best video on hand-sharpening drill bits I've seen. I think I'll make a jig and see if I can do a better job than my disappointing Drill Doctor 750 SP that I've tried to use for many years without good results. I can see making a tool rest that has a 118-degree notch ground into it that would always be ready to touch-up a bit. (and the dog can't carry it away). Thanks.
+DFWKen The problem with fixed grooves in the tool rest is you wear your stone so unevenly you are constantly having to dress it. It forces you to park on that one spot on the stone. The grooves are also a pain when you want to do other grinding operations. Just an irritating spot for stock to get hung up in.
like you I have enough bits that I use mostly on steel I have tried all kinds of stuff but don't like wasting the time and I also free hand it.i have the notch on my grinder but its stationary so good job,
Wow--now I understand why there's a groove cut into one of my grinder's tool rests. It's a bit sharpening jig! Thanks for this video--I always wondered what that was meant for.
+TheMadroaster That is what the groove on your grinder is for. But since it is stationary relative to the wheel you tend to wear the wheel in just one location which causes problems and requires dressing the wheel frequently.
+AskWoodMan Thanks--That's good to know. I don't sharpen many bits (or often) so I may be able to use it instead of making the jig. (Not that it's any trouble to make the jig--thanks for the video!)
Gracias, Gracias, Gracias. Las tres veces con mayúsculas. He visto muchos vídeos sobre cómo afilar brocas y el suyo me ha parecido una buenísima forma de hacerlo. Es fantástico. Impresionante y sencillísimo de hacer. Fenómeno, muchas gracias.
WOW, Whatever you are doing,, it works.. I will be making one of these jigs and trying it myself as I have lots of bits that won't go through hot butter.. Thanks for showing us that jig ....
😲 wow! Simply terrific job! Brilliant idea 🙂💡 👏 you've completely simplified this subject for me! Thanks 🙏 awesome that you've shown your freehand option also. +Peter Metaxas The problem with the fixed groove is that you are forced to use just one part of the grinding wheel so the result is either over wear in that one location or constant wheel dressing.
Great videos 1 & 2 ! I got a Drill Dr for $12 when the local hardware store went out of business. It does a good job but I have to read the instructions for 10 minutes before I use it. I think your method is more intuitive and better and available to anybody who has a table saw.
Need to make a jig for my plexiglass bits. They are at an 82 deg angle ( I think), sharper angle helps with edge blow outside when drilling. Some of mine need attention. Thanks for the top

great vid, been sharpening bits for 40 years by hand but that was before I saw this video. Thank you!

that's bloody good idea ...gonna make me one of those ....thanks from the UK
Very good I`m like you on freehand, the point keeps growing, thanks
Very well done. I would add that pilot holes are required when the web area is big (at bigger diameters) so you use the whole cutting edge
Nice job !! I have a bunch of bits I have to try this , I can't wait

Thanks for sharing this knowledge. This will greatly improve my freehand approach. Looking forward to watching 2nd video.
Great little jig!! I was trained to sharpen drills free hand using gauges if it needed to be super accurate. A skill not many have been able to learn from experience of trying to teach over the years and whether it's just coincidental but sharpening drills more and more pointy is usually the most common mistake I see in the workshop also !!! I can definitely see how this could benefit the workshop!! And so simple to make!! Great video 👍
You could grind the cutting face slightly - this is known as negative / positive rake. Doing this reduces breakout especially on plastics.
