Making a biogas digester // free gas at home // PART I

  • Making free gas at home with a biogas digester using household food waste. The first part of my series trying out a small biogas digester, setting up the digester so it is ready to produce gas. This could be a great addition to any household, especially if you are off-grid or in an area where propane is expensive or difficult to get.
    There are quite a few videos out there about biogas digesters. This looks like a great way to produce gas for cooking and even to generate power. Before I jump in and make a large out capable of producing enough gas to supply a home I start with a prototype to learn the details.
    If you want to make one yourself you will need:
    1 x 220lt (55 gallon) drum
    2 x 3" uniseal
    1 x 2.4m 63mm PVC Pipe (PN10)
    PVC cement
    2 x 63mm end cap
    2 x 63mm 2" Male BSP PVC Threaded Adaptor
    1 x 63mm 90 degree PVC Elbow
    1 x 63mm 90 degree PVC Tee
    8 x 5/16" Uniseal
    3 x 3 Ltr Clear plastic jar
    2m x 5mm plastic pipe
    I hope following me doing the building and making the mistakes means you won't have to if you come to make one yourself.
    Chapters:
    0:00 Intro
    0:48 The digester barrel
    1:38 All the other materials
    3:33 Scrubber and gas outlet lids
    4:55 Setting up the scrubbers
    8:25 Cutting the PVC pipes
    12:13 Explaining the gas outlets
    12:56 Holes for the input and digestate outlets
    14:09 Assembling the digester
    17:31 Digester setup so far

    I love the trial and error parts included. It lets people know that they are going to run into challenges. So many time I have found myself in the same situation. "Okay how do I make this happen" then you just climbed up on top and made it happen lol. Love it. Very nicely done! new subscriber gained.

    When using that type of hole saw, it is possible to enlarge the hole by fitting the original size hole saw, inside the larger hole saw. This will help, centre the larger hole saw, and stop it sliding about.

      Hi. Dog poo is tricky one as it can have some nasty bacteria in, so using the outputs as fertilizers would be a no go. Apart from that dog poo could be used as a supplement but it couldn't be the main base of the digester that would still need to be ruminants manure.

      @@GetMeOffGrid_ Thanks for reply, I’ve set up a basic mini system using what I found in skips etc, it’s a 5 gallon container connected via some fish tank rubber tubing. Attached directly to an old Pushbike Innertube, just to prove to myself that I can make BioGas, and to give me confidence to chuck out my old Electric cooker. To I have room for a Digester about the same size as the one in your vid. The Innertube has inflated so a small amount of BioGas is being produced, that’s without any heat and being in the coldest room in my flat. By what I’ve done so far is seems it isn’t necessary to use Cow Dung as most people do. As I only want to use Plant matter, and perhaps some of my own shit. What do u think?

    I feel like I'm being lazy just asking here, but I had assumed that other plant matter (not kitchen waste), such as grass clippings, weeds, etc ("green" compost material, not "brown" compost material) would be fine to add to a biodigester - is this the case?

    • @GetMeOffGrid_
      @GetMeOffGrid_  2 года назад

      You can add it but it is what would be classed as "low energy" feed so you'd need to make sure you were still feeding it with kitchen waste to keep it going. You could also supplement with extra cow manure.

    • @hola2esta
      @hola2esta 2 года назад +1

      grass and other "green" compost that i think you are talking about, contains a great deal of lignin, which is the main component of leaves, ligning cannot be breakdown easily by anaerobic bacteria, and a pretreatmentshould be added for these kind of "green compost" in order to get a considerable amount of methane.

    • @GetMeOffGrid_
      @GetMeOffGrid_  3 года назад +2

      Hi Joe. The pipe is 2" diameter. The in-pipe can be just a bit longer than the height of the barrel, so around 1m (double check that as some barrels are slightly different heights). With the out-pipe you will want to put an T-piece so that can also be 1m, then add the T-piece, on the vertical coming from the T-piece you can add any height. I have left mine without as that means I can see into the T-piece and monitor whats going on. I hope that helps.
