  • In this video, we look in detail at how Honda's vtec work, we look at every component from the rocker arms and pins to the vtec solenoid. we also disassemble every component to see how they function.
    This is the most detailed "how honda vtec works" video!
    VTEC stands for "Variable Valve Timing & Lift Electronic Control".. so VVTLEC or VTEC because that sounds better.
    VTEC was developed in Japan by Honda to improve the volumetric efficiency and to produce more power with less displacement, this is due to Japanese regulations that taxes cars based on engine size, unlike the USA where more power was gained by increasing the engine size.

    We use a PO8 sohc vtec cylinder head from a Honda D16Z6 engine in this video, however, in principle, the Honda Kseries and Bseries vtec systems work the same way with just minor differences in layout.
    D16Z6, D16Y9, B16, B18 GSR (B20V) and the performance variations of K20 and K24 (F-series and H-series (H22 - H23) and even J-series also use the same vtec system just with a different layout.

      @@RisingBoostYT Very much indeed! I have a D-Series in my own civic from 2001, and since I worked mostly on french and german makes, I greatly appriciate whatever info I can get on these engines. Mine is a D16W7 engine, and there is barely any info on those anywhere I tried to look for so far. In my understanding, the heads on the D16 series are cross compatible, so most I find are DOHC, while I have to stay on SOHCs. I'll have to rebuild that engine at some poibt in the near future, since that thing keeps hiding oil (no idea where it goes, it's dry underneath, no blueish smoke) I am sure it burns it tho, so your videos on this subject are an enourmous help. Thank you!

    • @RisingBoostYT
      @RisingBoostYT  2 года назад +1

      Hi Ramimax, the newer D17 / D16 motors with the coilpacks from factory, the heads are not compatible between the pre 2000 motors. Oil drains don't line up, so stick to the coil pack motors if you swop plan to swop heads. Hondas sometimes just use oil, if it runs good just run it, will probably still do 100k miles 😄

      @@RisingBoostYT Now THIS was very helpful. It runs fine so far, however I will have to check the spark plugs, seems they did their run lately. In worst case, honda engines will run even without oil anyway haha. Autobahn seems to drink most of it up, so yeah... Your response made my day. ^^

    Been looking for a 90’s Civic Hatchback. Just don’t know what model or engine type yet. Thank you for this

    • @RisingBoostYT
      @RisingBoostYT  3 года назад +1

      Hi Chillenjack, for the 90s civics you will be looking at an EG or EK model. if you on a budget, try to get a D-series vtec model, if you want more power and turning potential you should look for a car with a B-Series engine. I currently have a D-series but it is just because they are way cheaper where I am from. to check if it has vtec, look for the vtec solenoid on the back of the cylinder head on the left side. also, Google the engine number on the front of the block, wiki will tell you exactly the specs of the engine. but know there is also economy versions of vtec that won't help with performance. so always google the engine number so you don't get a vtec-e motor.

    do you have one for the I-VTEC for honda ?

    • @RisingBoostYT
      @RisingBoostYT  24 дня назад +1

      Hi, sadly no. However, ivtec normally just means it is vtec and vtc combined, vtc is an adjustable cam gear controlled by the ecu and oil pressure. So the vtec system remain the same, some cars have vtec but it is an economy version of vtec that works slightly different. However the tech stay the same.
