I absolutely loved this movie!! The way that it began with Nat Love being forced to watch Rufus Buck murder his parents was a touch of brilliance, IMO, because it made for the perfect prologue while giving you every reason to invest in Nat Love's revenge. And given the simplicity of it, from a narrative perspective, it felt remarkably fresh.
So much of that, I believe, has to do with the writing. The action and violence were completely unsparing, which they let you know early with Nat's parents, and I think that allowed for them to really lean into comedy without it seeming like some kind of spoof -- something which would've been all too easy as an all-black western starring a number of famous comedians.
Of all the directors out there capable of threading that needle, the only one that comes to mind for me is Quentin Tarantino and this film felt like it could've been one of his own. It had the revenge element, the brilliant twist (with Rufus Buck's confession at the end), and was visually just incredible -- not to mention cast to perfection.
Regina King was amazing! Lakeith Stanfield was amazing! Moreover, the lesser known actors who were outstanding; Cuffee, Jim Beckworth, Bill Pickett, etc. Even Deon Cole as the mayor of Redwood, a mostly serious role, where he was (again) just brilliant!
One of my favorite scenes, by the way, was in the very beginning when the Nat Love Gang was setup in the mountains trying to ambush the Crimson Gang. I love when they're all taken out and it's just Damon's character left, and he goes; "You killed my brother!" and Fast Draw Jim goes "Half-brother, calm down". 😂
Favorite film of the year, at least for me, is still far and away "Judas and the Black Messiah", but on pure entertainment value alone this one deserves to be somewhere very high on the list. It felt exciting the whole way through, and honestly by the end I almost felt for Rufus Buck. I can see how they were able to land so many stars to do this film, because the story itself really is so much more than just a western. Not to say it's the deepest film I've ever seen -- it's certainly no Inception -- but it absolutely hit on what it wanted to be, which I feel like earns it a very high grade. Overall: 8.5/10.

I really enjoyed the movie and the twist at the end. I wished that Jim buckworth didn’t die the way that he did (without getting the shot off) but how else would they have set everything off?

That movie was amazing. I agree with just about everything you said. The cast was amazing and the action scenes were lit. My favorite was Cherokee Bill, because He just stood out to me the most. Now that being said, I didn't like what he did during the Final showdown, but it is what it is.

I enjoyed this movie. The cast was great! I loved the attention to the details. The use of color, costumes and music made this even better. It was also amazing to see us so confident and capable of having our own. Great job! Hopefully more movies like this to tell our history.

Cherokee bill was dishonorable with the kills . He didn’t honor the 5 count and he shot ol’ dude in the back . I don’t understand why he did that . They made his character seem so honorable up until he killed them

the real Cherokee Bill was a cold blooded murderer and robber who who spread terror and death and destruction wherever he went. he wasn't an honest man and was not above shooting people in the back. his boys turned him in for the reward because it was was safer for them without him around. and he did all this shit before he turned 21.

I watched this movie first day it hit the flix. It was so good. Everyone did great. Surprises for me were Rj Cyler as Jim Beckwourth, I remember him from the last power rangers movie, meh. Deon Cole as Wiley Esco, I like how he came back on shit (also peep the scene where they catch him in the woods, his golds is gone, then he turn around and they back). Those my two surprises as great performances. Cuffee caught me cuz I didn't know her and Zazie too.

What I thought was powerful at the end was when Mary asked if the devil was dead and Nat Buck replies "I don't know". All this time he was going after "the devil" only to find out, he's got a little bit of "devil" in him too because of who his daddy was before he "changed"

I really liked what you said about making more westerns. The violence was a bit much for me but it gave me Quentin Tarantino vibes so I dig it. Cuffee was my favorite character, I feel like she stole the show, especially with her being less known than the other actors. I loved how they gave the women the hand-to-hand combat scene cause it usually goes to male characters and they killed it! I can't wait for the next movie!
