"she cut her throat loose" 😂 I love how unsettling this movie was. My only gripe is that they showed the car window head drop scene in the trailer. It would've been awesome to see it for the first time while watching the movie so I didn't know it was coming.
As you were explaining the movie, it seems to support my initial theory that the plot is an allegory for people who move through life acting like everything’s fine (“grinning & bearing it”) until it makes them crack mentally. That entity is similar to pride, which goeth before the fall. Those disingenuous smiles cover something much more sinister among those that SEEM like the perfect role models. A PhD student, a cop, a therapist, a professor… all supposedly intellectual/respected positions but people in those positions be twisted den a mf on the inside & all it takes sometimes is someone else’s trauma to trigger that spirit to surface. I’m gonna watch it still, spoiler and all. I love how you considered us who haven’t watch the whole thing yet, but we come here specifically for your tells lol
I was thinking the exact same thing. While I hate horror movies, I watched this one and loved the metaphor they were eluding to. Also the fact that we're the ones who gives trauma it's power over out lives. It was dope to me. 👌
My daughter and I will be seeing this today 👍🏾 And I agreed Oscars should be given to horror movies. Toni Collette was good in Hereditary. Because watching that movie made me feel like I was doing something wrong and I should be in church all day Sunday.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU FOR going back to theatre!!!! I think I know why I like this format so much. It's feels more intimate between you and the audience. You look in the camera more and you are more animated when you do the theatre. And it's nice to have the background music back too. Well done Mr. Baker
That first scene where that chick is just standing in the dark in the kitchen looking at her, that's my favorite shot of the movie as well, and the way they shot it and the camera work, it was so great, letting the tension build and the camera slowly pans and doesn't cut, and then they let it linger, freaking loved it. Reminded me of the scene in Hereditary when they girls just up in the corner in the bedroom.
Yah that hereditary scene always reminded me of the grudge. The girl ghost did that too in grudge As far if the smile thing, it reminds me of Lights Out
so relieved to see you back in the theater!!!! I took my niece who THOUGHT she was ready to go see this at the theater. I realized this whole movie is a metaphor for unresolved trauma. Happy to be a guest to discuss my thesis :)
🎷You’re back!! THANK YOU! I was curious about this movie but I DO NOT do horror! I ain’t got time to be staying up all night for a week after lol 😂 . Thanks for reviewing, Tony! 🎷
I haven’t seen smile, but when I saw the trailer I knew it would be creepy. And im never creeped out by horror movies. But I always felt like the best horror movies are made from turning things that are ubiquitous or non threatening into being disturbing. If you can turn an everyday item or occurrence into something that triggers fear or at least kinda creeps you out, that’s a winner in my book. And the marketing for this movie was amazing. Having ppl stand at sporting events and smile through the entire thing while looking at the camera. That was one of the dopest things I’ve seen in a while.
I don't actually understand watching people suffer as a form of entertainment...but I'll listen to any story this man tells me...with hearts where my eyes should be.
Good movie. Basically "It Follows 2." Bacon's acting was really strong. I was trying to recall where I saw her bf > A-Train of The Boys ... hahaa, thanks for that. Enjoyed your reviews as always.
Lol this review didn't miss a beat. And yes, thank you for addressing the lack of horror recognition in Hollywood. And Toni Collette is one of many recent iconic performances stacking up. Daniel Kaluuya in Get Out, Essie Davis in Babadook, Maika Monroe in It Follows, Lupita Nyong'o in Us, Florence Pugh in Hereditary, Gong Yuu in Train to Busan to name some more. Horror is dominating but I guess the critics are too scared to watch the movies 🤷♀️
And the cinematography was amazing, BUT gotta give credit to audio team as well. From the scare moments to just ambient sounds in the background during "trivial" moments, the audio had me buggin👌
Same, I was so anxious. I desperately wanted the movie to take a break so I could relax and breathe, but they kept on the gas! I was so uncomfortable and I loved every minute.
@@lessismore8533 I'm talking about the scene with the patient smiling in the kitchen or the scene where the mom turns into the entity. I don't watch trailers for that sole reason. There more to horror than jump scares.
Man I'm a grown man n when i tell u that this movie fucked me up after the credits started to roll and omw home this movie had me shook. Very few horror movies get me like this n this one is included. Predictable yet how it's executed is truly terrifying
And that scene when the girl was in the dark smiling man straight chills down my spine. Visually the movie is pure terror n the reveal of the entitiys true form is the stuff of nightmares
There were so many grown men screaming and talking back to the screen when we went. It was funny, but sorry refreshing to see men sitting in their emotions. Lol
My daughter and I went to see Smile yesterday, we loved it..... We might be a little too silly because we were definitely laughing at moments that we shouldn't have been lol, but all in all I would've given it a solid 🎷🎷🎷🎷, jus because of the ending. I legit thought she beat it, but having that be an illusion was a mad dope twist...... Also the girl that was smiling from the birthday party, her face stuck with me more than the girl she saw kill herself...... Dope movie overall, definitely recommend it
I feel that it was really good because it wasn’t the typical horror film. It casted a cure more so on mental health more that ominous horror. In the end, she ended up being consumed by her own mental breakdown from seeing a patient kill themself right in front of her. Think about it. Her mother had mental issues as well, and her sister (and therapist) said she took after her. Just like “Us”. People made it overrated because they wanted it to be that overly scary film, when it was just a good dobbleganger classic. I loved it.
I agree with part of this. But its definitely not the only horror film that has a main goal that isn’t just scaring ppl. For Smile, it was mental health (tho some ppl felt they approached it insensitivity) but for other Horrors it was something else. When I remember examples I’ll come back. But the mental health thing alone is not enough to call it a “classic”. Smile derives from SO many other horror films it’s crazy. It Follows, Fallen, Drag me to Hell, truth or dare, Ring, It, and Lights Out and couple more. Now I know every film has atleast one inspo so that’s fine or even 2. Nothing wrong with it but Smile got the longest list I’ve seen so it owes lots of its success to those movies before it. Apparently if the mental health subject was enough to get movie standing on 2 feet , Parker (his 1st film) would’ve only done that. But apparently felt he needed all those influences. So no Smile isn’t original enough to be a Classic. It took a specific scare out of It follows. But I feel horror been declining lately so Smile was nice. Same for black phone.
That damn scene when what we thought was her sister knocking on her car window after their argument! Holy shit!!! I haven't jumped like that in a long time!
It's the consistent eye contact and manufactured grin held too long that makes a smile creepy. Had a issue with a woman placing herself in my private stairwell at all hours. She would leave but hang around out of sight, my neighbors keep catching her lingering after repeatedly being asked to leave. She screams to herself things people shouted at her, sometimes in another language. This is daily. Just the other day I saw her coming through the alleyway I grabbed my items and quickly locked the gate behind me. This lady powerwalked into a jog towards my stairwell just to peek her head around the corner and made direct eye contact while simultaneously smiling at me. When I say she had me shook I mean that. She produced this eerie smile saying nothing, just staring not blinking smile affixed like only someone out of their mind. With all that said I still plan to see this movie. I'm sure it will deliver.
This movie will make you wanna call the cops next time lol........ Sorry to say that, but if that's happening to you now and you can hold it together, this is gonna change that lol. Jus reading this had me ready to move🤣🤣🤣
They pull off the creepy smile by not smiling with their eyes. Big smiles, showing teeth, but dead eyes with no warmth. The only time someone smiled with their eyes was when the monster confronted her directly, and it was TERRIFYING.
The acting was top notch. Every time she said she wasn’t crazy, they had her lookin crazier every time. Between her mannerisms and makeup she looked unhinged at every turn. The mom growing into the monster was great.👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Yeah man!! Toni Colliet was amazing in Hereditary.. so glad I went to see that movie in theaters!! Actually changed the way I watch movies now! Especially horror. Always in theater!! I enjoyed Smile it was a little slow but the last 20 minutes were good and a lot of the good parts was already in the preview
YAAAAAAAAAY! I’ve missed the reviews in the theaters!❤❤❤. Also. Her fiancé as trash. He gave up on her real quick. And shoutout to the monster for dressing up in a cute outfit for the kid’s birthday party.
Because some of the horror movies too keep it 100 with everyone is copy and paste... Smile is actually a copy and paste of 'It Follows", it just has something that is the same. And the Academy thinks that even with a good casting they believe it's trash.

It was ok. Wasn't bad. I think A-Train could have not been in the movie and it would have been fine. Other than the first girl and the entity revealing itself, none of the other people had creepy smiles to me. Also, the scene where the entity opened its mouth, showed all those teeth and the lady looked hypnotized, reminded me of that scene from IT.
The most effed up part about the movie is that the catalyst to the situation is almost avoided as the doctor was literally walking out of her office en route to going home for the night. Over zealously she feels obligated to answer the call due to her own secret trauma. If only she was black that damn phone would still be ringing.
It was good. Overrrated but good so your rating makes sense. I didnt hear any negatives tho so I'm curious with all the praise you gave it, what brought it down to only 3.5/4 saxs.
I 🖤 your commentary! We share some of the same sentiments. Which characters pissed you off? It's the other cop that kept talking sh*t about the mental patients, Sosie's husband for not truly supporting her (even if she sounded crazy to him), the sister for being stuck up, & her boss for being an a**. 😂
I also enjoyed Smile! A creepy horror and trauma movie! I agree that horror movies actors don't get the respect that other genres do. Sosie Bacon did a great and exhausting acting job. Toni Collette did an amazing job in Heriditary! She should have been nominated for an Oscar!
