TBH I personally wouldn't include the new scream in it but imo, the horror movies this year I can remember post- Scream were pretty good to me. Like Barbarian, X, Pearl, Orphan First Kill (this one really went above and beyond to change expectations since it was a prequel where we all knew how it was going to end) were pretty good as far as the typical horror movies go....I mean better than damn Halloween "Evil Dies ToNigHT" from last year anyways.

I honestly thought the same thing. Her being a mental health professional and listening to everyone's story's and experiences and her telling them what they are feeling and seeing are not real (until the one time when it was). And then her trying to explain her experiences to another mental health professionals and her therapist disregards her almost immediately and suggest that maybe it's a past trauma they have talked about before that she didn't even mention during her session.
For me, it was a moment. Regardless if it's in the person's head or not it's really happening to them and that's how it feels. Take them seriously. Listen, and to them and try to understand where they might be coming from. Instead people just offer the generic response treatment of "it's on in your head, it's not real, just smile, and think happy thoughts." Imo

I actually thought they did a good job of progressively making Rose go more and more crazy as the movie went along. Because when she first starts seeing signs of it, she is still goes about it in a rational way. But the longer she has the curse, the more desperate she is to get rid of it, therefore making her more defensive when the people she trusts just assume she’s going crazy. I mean, just imagine that you’re literally being tormented by an evil entity to the point where you are physically harming yourself and the people closest to you just write it off as “This b*tch is crazy. The way it jumps to the next person is a metaphor for trauma - traumatized people will traumatize others (hurt people hurt people...). And the way she gets upset about not being believed - it's when a person finally, when they can't take it anymore, reaches out to someone about their mental health as a cry for help, but only gets "it's not that bad, don't be dramatic, you just want attention, etc" as reply...

I haven’t seen it, but I read a review that said it’s main theme was mental health and being dismissed, so maybe her trying to explain the curse and getting angry was symbolic. It’s like someone either with delusions trying to explain what they think is happening, or someone with something like depression or anxiety trying to explain how things feel to them and being dismissed.

I told him “it’s like when you tell someone about your trauma and they react thinking it’s impossible to feel such things, no hate to them, they just don’t understand it bc they’ve never been trough it so it doesn’t fit in their head how that is very much a reality for you” I think the only way the director could convey that was through having rose try to explain an “entity” I think the entire point of the “entity” in the movie was to symbolize her trauma, this was never a paranormal movie

People can know you have these issues and think they’ll be able to deal with them but they have no idea what it actually looks like, and people you’d thought would be your biggest advocates just sit and stare and let you run out like everyone else. That party scene had me dissociating, the way everyone sat back and didn’t help was an attempt to let others who don’t deal with these issues get a taste of what it feels like. Rose grabbing the wine bottle, and me thinking there would be something when she closes the fridge's door but there isn't). There would even be entire sections of the movie that turn out to be not real that make for some really good scares. The one where Rose drives to her ex's place and it turns out she didn't even leave the abandoned house and the scene where she was talking with her therapist but it turn out she was calling Rose on her home phone the whole time. I think Rose's reactions were pretty realistic actually. She was going through sudden trauma and mental problems from Laura, and then with the curse she became paranoid. Eventually she just wanted someone to believe her, and she'd do anything. Her getting mad at her fiance is because she's already pissed at her therapist for rejecting helping her when she asked, and when she asked her fiance to believe her he refused. These two things combined with just finding them talking in her home would piss anyone stressed like she is, off. Her husband, who didn't want to talk about it with her, instead wants to talk about her behind her back to her therapist who has seen the worst parts of her and knows so intimately the things that scare her the most that SHOULD be confidential. It's a breech of trust. He's getting rumours of her behind her back instead of talking to her because he's a coward, and doesn't care to hear it from her own mouth. I would have called it off.

I enjoyed the movie. I think it’s a metaphor for trauma and how we all experience it and struggle to cope. Especially those with mental health conditions that feel neglected. Each person’s trauma is their own, in a way no other person can truly understand what they are going through. Similar to how the main character didn’t believe her patient at first, and how she herself felt dismissed about her hallucinations later on.
I think another theme was that trauma spreads. The more we give ourselves to others the more we can end up hurt and traumatized ourselves. We inherit each other’s pain. It’s up to us to respond with kindness and empathy to those who are traumatized, and in that regard, I wish the movie had a different ending.
I wish she confronted the evil being at the end with love, rather than animosity, for it feeds off trauma and pain. Without that source of pain it would simply cease to exist. And acceptance of that trauma and dealing with those emotions head on is the way to overcome some of that pain, and at least, learn to live with it.
Then again it could be a social commentary that we, as human beings, should be closer to one another and never dismiss one another’s pain and/or suffering as hers was dismissed.
Either way, I think there is a lot more to this movie than at first glance.

Most horror films just throw away the plot and focus on the jumpscares but with Smile, there is just enough plot armor to say that it is worth the watch. I was smiling myself because good horror movies are rare and the directors put in a lot of creepy scares like the whispering from the bathroom or when it showed her previously known to be dead patient smiling across the hallway in her house in a dark corner. Really good stuff, I think they ended it well too even though I called it from the start.
