I don't think I've ever seen Jerry on stage without a GUITAR! It's kinda weird.
its weird to see a guitarist with a guitar??? ok...
@@jacknife10000 he said without, doofus
I know thats what he said, doofus. Why would a guitarist be WITHOUT a guitar???
Agreed!
@@jacknife10000 THAT IS WHAT THE ORIGINAL POST IS ASKING YOU INCREDIBLE WAD.
This was how Will and Jerry met. Will opened up with his bad for Jerry and volunteered to do his show. Quite fitting. I love William DuVall. What a way to become friends.
*band
They met a few years before this
they met in 2000 at a concert and quickly became friends because according to Jerry Will was a lot like him. First a guitarist and a singer out of necessity. Jerry actually played bass for Will's band in a few shows when their bassist was unavailable
@@rumblefish9 thanks for the info
Haha
Jerry Cantrell doesn't get enough recognition. Is there a cooler guy doin' music? NO, there ain't.

New album coming from Jerry October 2021 New single “Atone” already out

The moment a fan throws a Layne Staley shirt up to Jerry, who holds it up to a cheering crowd..
Jerry Cantrell, the best songwriter of the 90's
Best songwriter period.
@@scottyj871 true
Nope. Billy corgan.
Layne had some great tunes as well.
Of all time I would say.
You can tell Jerry looks he hasn't had a decent rest in a few days. The pit he crawled out of is a true inspiration and highly overlooked unless your a diehard fan.
Layne showed us to be who you are, and Jerry showed us the power of who you can be.
He said he needed to do this, that the down time would’ve been really bad for him after Layne’s death and he might not have been able to get back up from it. Tho He was in a really bad place struggling with drug addiction and mental health so it did take some balls to do this whole tour. Luckily in 2003 he was able to get cleaned up which has lead to Jerry still being around today kickin ass today. Fuckin legend and an absolute inspiration after all he’s been through, guy has endured so much loss. Also Deg trip is way underrated, deserved way way more attention, the full 25 track album is a masterpiece, should’ve sold millions of copies like AIC albums or other big albums From the grunge scene. Anyway I’m rambling now but Cantrell is a God who deserves so much praise, one of the absolute best songwriters ever imo. Glad he made it through this period in his life, he was in a very bad place and it showed on deg trip which is so dark and depressing, made for a masterpiece album Tho.
@@puppetmaster8551 I couldn't have said it any better than you just did. I love Jerry's solo work. Yes degradation trip is a true masterpiece. Thank you for giving him the recognition he deserves.
@@puppetmaster8551 I 100 percent agree!❤️
That’s a good way to put it
This was literally 4-5 DAYS after Layne's body was discovered (ugh - whether or not the time of death was put at 2 weeks earlier), so Jerry was probably in a very deep dark space at this show. He never wanted to be a singer or the front man, but Layne's antics more or less forced his hand, I'm guessing. He knew the band was imploding, their lead vocalist was going to die, and so he had to do something to keep going/put bread on the table, you know? Thankfully, it all worked out over the years, but at this particular show, I'm guessing that it was probably all he could do to keep it together in public. If you read the lyrics in Degradation Trip and BGWTB, you get a sense of the emotional trauma he went through.
Jerry is clearly on the edge of losing it, emotionally, angrily, but he just just manages to hold it together, somehow, to give hurting ALICE fans a taste of what once was, and will be again. What an incredible gig to watch. I've been an AIC fan for years, but could not bring myself to watch/listen to songs without Layne. But, to Duvalls credit, he pulls it off. And does it well, like with respect. So I'm slowly letting him into my ears....hehe...you know what I mean. I love their new releases a lot, the nothing to do with Layne songs. (And yet he is there, with Jerry, singing, I swear I hear him sometimes)
I feel like Jerry was on a lot of drugs here to get through it. I think he got clean in July of 2002
In his own admission he coped with Layne's death by doing a ton of drugs for a few years.
@@ShadowKiller571 he got sober in 2003, a year after Layne passed away
Wow. Only 8 days after Layne was confirmed to be dead. The emotions he must’ve been going through... can’t imagine. Love u jerry Cantrell!
This surprises me...a week after the death of Layne Staley, and Jerry picked a way to move on...and keep him in memory...this is beautiful totally
Those feels Jerry must have went through when they start playing the Alice songs.
This concert was less than two weeks after he died too
Big Ole Nate
happened a week after he was found
Omg yes 😢😭
@@bigolenate1678 actually a week. Not that it matters. Jerry was probably a big ball of stress and sadness.
That was beautiful to see will give Jerry a hug- I know he was hurting!!
I don’t know how he did this. So much pain in his life during this time. He’s truly a lifer!! 🎤🎸💔
Pretty sure he was a bit drunk. Not much, just enough
Gosh, this video was RIGHT after Layne was found. Ugh. The poor guy, I'm surprised he even managed to be vertical at this time. I still struggle to read through some of his lyrics because they absolutely stab me in the heart. Layne really did a number on Jerry and the guys....how painful that all must have been for them. I'm sure the long drawn out process didn't help any either.
Pardon my French, but Jerry Cantrell looks fine as f*ck here. 🔥
Yea I thought the same . . . this is where he really started to step into lead rock god. He was comfortable with Layne doing that but you can tell he is ready. At the beginning he makes a joke about how he has to figure out the microphone as the lead. He's such an adorable human, humble and funny (and fine as hell, lol). I am sure his family and friends are crazy about him.
You can see clearly that he was emotionally overwhelmed, heartbroken, constantly asking the crowd for good vibes and feedbacks.
How many touching songs he wrote about his personal issues and feelings.. every notes, every words..so beautiful!
Gifted artist and amazing soul🖤💜
Lucky who had the chance to have him so close...
Can't wait for the new solo album.
I've always respected Jerry so much. Boggy Depot is one of my favorite albums. I hope he comes out with another one similar to it. I can also appreciate the simmered rock that he puts out just as much as his heavier stuff. He's a rock god to me, to say the least.
yep boogy is a great album..
Jerry Cantrell is the master 😎
Honestly! My song is my favorite song by Jerry and one of my favorite Alice songs even though it’s a Jerry solo
Hell yeah he is .,.,and awesome! Peace love @ human kindness always Kim -n-Carolina 🚣
Jerry is working on a new solo album now, can’t wait to hear it. I’m sure it’ll be great like every piece of music Jerry writes
Jerry was hurting here. Everything was still so raw. 😢 😭
2002 a tough time for Jerry, but he’s come so far now
This must have hurt like hell for jerry just to be able to pull himself together you can clearly hear his pain . we miss you Layne!RIP angry angel
Poor Jerry, he was hurting so bad...
hes a good guy, stopped his show to bring a girl up on stage to sit beside him on stage because she was getting crushed by the surges, he cares about his fans, he's really a good, good guy, I don't know him, but I do think he's a very down to earth guy/
***** sure is. this was filmed only a 1 week after Layne died.
I saw them in June of this year
at what time that happened?
In June of 2002 In Boston, MA (Club name: Avalon)
i mean, at what time he helps the chick in the video brah
Im sorry I probably didn't make myself clear enough, this happened at a different show in Boston (June of 2002).
Solitude is a fucking amazing song.
yea Solitude is one of my favorites! It's so beautiful. Also love Anger Rising and Locked On!

Thank you
just found this video...I'm saving it for future reference, but I don't think my heart could handle hearing him do anything after "Anger Rising." Will have to wait a while...
You can tell jerry is really trying to hold it together. What a stand up guy, if that was me up there performing id have to walk off stage and cry my eyes out because that's insanely hard to do. Fuck...
I think you can tell about Jerry's pain because of Layne's death from the punch he gives to that cymbal right before he gets off stage...
wish we could see Jerry better down in front on the crowd.
We're seeing the birth of new age AiC here. Historic!
Duvall rocks it on What The Hell Have I?
What a gorgeous man
I was shocked at the first song where he was up there with only a microphone! I'm like wait a minute...... Jerry Cantrell without a guitar!?!?!..... will...
Will God allow that? Lol. He's usually glued to his guitar
Music is therapeutic, it's healthy to keep your mind occupied in dark times.
Truth
i have nothing but love for Jerry
me too
I've never seen Jerry on stage without his guitar.. he doesn't know where to put his hands
Dear god Down in a hole gave me chills...i felt the emotion in his voice from losing layne
I love listening to (and watching) Jerry up there singing extremely well. I think a lot of people think of him only as the lead guitarist who sings good backing vocals. He is so much more than that.
The way Jerry and William are singing the chorus in Anger Rising together is epic
"Ya'll got me too hot, I broke my f'ing amp, sh*T!!!!" lol
Oh, wait, I liked this not realizing it was my own post. This stuff is hilarious though, and so priceless. Making my days.
I was pressed up against the steel not 3 feet from the stage. The whole time. It was my little brother's 1st concert. The best concert I ever had the pleasure of attending. Stoned Temple P opened that night. I fell in love with Scott Weilend. lol.
Its not stoned temple pilots. Its stone
@Tonya Hagerman - Oh yeah, didn't we all? Lol. That would've been the tail end of prime Scott "The ultimate frontman" Weiland. 😍 Now he and Chris are gone too. Rest easy boys. Thanks for the music & so many memories.
@@jacknife10000
LOL.... I'm sure she knows that it's "STONE TEMPLE PILOTS"! That was just her subtle way of putting an Inside joke out in the universe!! It was just a play on words!
And I actually like"Stoned Temple Pilots"!! Fits perfectly! HA!!!
To clear up the dates that some people have been posting; Layne died on April 5, 2002, or at least that's what the autopsy said. His body was found on April 20, a little over two weeks after his death. Regardless, I don't know how Jerry did this, major props to him.
***** What are you trying to say? The concert was on April 27, 2002, a week after he was found.
*****
oh, my bad. I think so, It's kind of hard to make out.
***** Yes, it is!

jerry didn't give a fuck about layne that is the truth!
+Gordan Bosic if so, why he dedicated his entire solo album to Layne?
I love Jerry ❤ 😍 💖 ❣ 💕 💘 ❤ 😍
"Solitude" is an awesome tune!
William DuVall is so talented! I'm glad he's helping Alice in Chains family live on!
Huh? Duvall is the weak link in Chains. Layne was the true voice although Jerry is the mastermind regarding songwriting and music.
Duvall sucks.
Layne is dead, deal with it. Duvall is good and never tried to be Layne
@@-C.T.- I really think Duvall is capable of doing way much more with his voice but maybe for Layne's fans sake they have decided not to bring him too much to the front. Is just my opinion having heard some of Duvall's work aside from AIC.
@@Godsmack289 i heard his voice on hung on a hook. The man can def sing
Degration trip is an excellent record, thank you for this
I don't know how he managed this only a week after news of Layne's passing. He's really something else.
I was there i took my 8 year son im a 30 year musician now due to him seeing this from my shoulder in front row if u look close when jerry steps down u can see us.... any way my son 18 is one of the best damn young guitar players in this damn country....he can play any lick jerry can!!!! i started teaching him that year.......damn good time sorry to bragg on my son but when you herehim play youll tripp...
Keep on Bragging until your last day!! He's your pride and joy and you have every reason to be proud! Hold your head up high your the reason he got into it by taking him to that show! And grin every time he plays Jerry's RIFFS they aren't easy to do and rightfully so!!! This will be the coolest memories that the two of you can share with everyone!!! Great Talent is hard to come by and you formed it that lucky night you got to see the best band in the world with your son!! ROCK OUT TIL YOUR BLISTERS ARE BLEEDIN AND THEN SOME!! HA!
@BRIAN ROARK
Lol that was supposed to be at the beginning of my reply to you about your son! LOL Yeah it's getting late! TeeHeehee
Jerry is awesome !!!
He went through a bunch I'm certain. This is 7 days later after his friend Layne was discovered deceased.Very tough for him:(
Willhelm Kirkpatricka Jerry hadnt talked to Layne in more than 2 years before he died
@@OcelotDAD How do you know that? And even if he hadn't it doesn't change anything. He lost his best friend, you can see the pain on his face in this video, it must've been very hard for him.
Much respect for Jerry for keep making great quality music for us all.
Long live to you Jerry!
Watching again . . . jerry had tears during the end of the performance of Anger Rising. This concert. Holy shit. I wish there was more live footage from this era.
Me too!! I’ve come back to this video SO many times over the years. I hope it’s never taken down!
You should have seen the Stone Temple Pilots shows that immediately followed. It was a magical night. I remember laying in my girlfriends band at 7AM still high from the show and unable to sleep, no drugs.
I was at this show too and STP covered Shine on you Crazy Diamond as a tribute to Layne
I love Jerry's voice plus he is a fucking amazing player/compositor
If anyone can replicate Layne's voice it's Jerry, I mean he just completely embodies him on Them Bones
I was just thinking the same thing. He is truly a master of his songs. I could listen to any of then anytime.
It's because jerry was the one who wrote most of the alice in chains stuff. it's like linkin park. chester was amazing but mike shinoda had the most songwriting stuff.
i ain't talking bad about layne but i'm saying that jerry can replicate layne's voice because he was the one who helped layne to develope the aesthetic we know today. he's the heart of that too
“It’s hard to start things over”
Jerry Jerry Jerry!
Wow. Slice of history here. Would've loved to been there.
he is so hot goddamn
I bought Degradation Trip when it first came out for Anger Rising and then later my wife bought me the double album of it which I did not know at the time only had a limited number of pressings. Damn you people that only have the single Degradation Trip cd are REALLY MISSING OUT on some great songs.
Powerful voice during 'What the Hell Have I"...i'm very emotional and sad looking back on this...
Reading the comments, I could see a lot of people surprised about William´s presence...guys...
THE WHOLE BAND IS GREAT! They´re Comes With the Fall, a fucking awesome band!
Ohhh. . . Mr. Cantrell. . . . cut me in!
I love watching and listening to Jerry in a raw form , right after Layne died, on his own great guitarist needs to be in Rock n Roll Hall of Fame
Jerry's singing to the heavens ! He's going thru pain that a lot of us can't even fathom! They may have been at a distance for a while but that doesn't change how much he loves and loved his brother! They had a bond that can never be broken NO MATTER What!
And I believe that MUSIC helps us get thru some of our worst times and Gut wrenching pain..... This was probably the Best thing Jerry could have done to help ease the pain and bring Him Closer to Layne up on that stage gripping that microphone!
Awesome performance Jerry... and a shout out to Will for being there in their time of need..Well Done my friend!!!
But I have to say IMO... Will you sound great and keep getting better... but you have some awfully BIG Shoes to fill !! THX GUYS AWESOME SHOW!! NOTHIN BUT RESPECT IS ALL I CAN SAY!!!
RIP... LAYNE... You are truly Loved and Missed, Always and Forever My Friend!!!
I can't believe Layne threw his life away. What so many people would give to have had his talent. It sucks! I want him back. 😭
LOL. No one gets out of this life alive.
Anger Rising is an awesome song and Willy Will nails it.
This man could sing jibberish and it would sound amazing ❤
Jerry is one of my favorite singers of all time. Honestly.
i think he's really good man.
I saw JC at the Viper Room around this time. Duval's band Comes with the Fall was opening act. When they did some AIC songs with Duval, I knew it was the start of something great. Those were awesome shows!
would've loved to have been at this show
I was at the show ! Saw the original Alice but I drove to Charlotte NC from Knoxville Tennessee with my 8 year old son .his fist show mine was kiss when I was 7 in 1979
Brian Roark hell yeah man! I’m from Knox area too
You can just tell that Jerry respects his fans when he called out that crazy man during WHAT THE HELL HAVE I!!!💯🤟
VERY good showmanship by Mr. Cantrell and the test of the band!!!💯
Yes jerr and layne were very close despite the distance between them in the end- Jerry really was heartbroken and a part of him died when Layne did-
Nice to see him open up a little now- lol!!
Cut you in DEFINITELY... Flamenco grunge!!! VERY unique not many songs like that!!!💯🎸🎸🎸🎸🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟
He's such a hottie, but I love the music, too!!!!
Jerry has a beautiful voice he is totally awesome!! 😊🤘💓🌹✌️
This is like therapy
I feel that way also. It takes you down into a space where you can grieve and process a lot of emotions, which then lifts your spirits.
he's an angel : D
Yep
Omg I’m in love 💗
Interesting interlude into Love me TWO times by THE DOORS before No Excuses!!! No Excuses has a deep meaning for me... I was 13 or so around 30 years ago and was told too rake rocks and I just so happened to hear this song and it had a VERY profound effect on me!!!💯
I was at the Providence ri stop of this cantrell 2002 solo tour I was 22 at the time just saw him again in Boston on April 6th of 2022 4 days before my 42 birthday both shows were at lil clubs amazing shows don't remember much from the 2002 show as it was so long ago but the show a couple nights ago was amazing I was about 4 rows of people from the front amazing times
this is 2002 but I don't know why I feel it like a weird very old stuff, maybe for the quality of the video, but that makes ths a piece of art! epic
Holy shit thank you for posting this, such a rare vintage set. Damn…..to think that Layne had just died literally less than a month before this show, you never would’ve known from watching him here. Can’t even imagine what he must’ve been going through. 🥺😭
I've lost many friends to smack ....I do not know how Jerry is keeping his composure ...but ,sometimes we just have to bite the bullet ..and I feel Jerry mourned Laynes death way before he actually was found ...when someone you love is dying from dope you find yourself planning their funeral ..way before their heart takes its final bow / last beat ...Layne hadn't lived in a couple of years ...we all know that ..Jerry knew full well his best friends fate .and it wasn't in April of 2002 ..more like April of 98 / 97 ..such damned senseless death ..such a loss of talent ..Layne was such a sweet sensitive young man...who unfortunately lived by way of dying ..this being said Jerry has my respect ..and so does Will Duvall , can you fathom how difficult it must've been to sing ALICE Lyrics that were once Laynes bread n butter , his babies ? ..Sh- it , took a lot of audacity and confidence...Greaat jobs mateys considering the elephant in the room or on stage ...peace baby ! Layne I hope you found contentment on the other side sweety ..we miss you. Your absence is felt daily..
Jerry 😍
Them Bones just rips... 'Nuff said on that!!! Good song all around!!! Nice reverb at the end!!!💯🤟🤟🤟
Down in a Hole DEFINITELY 💯 has that feeling of being so low that all you can do is dig your way out... Kinda a prelude into Man in a Box!!!💯
Me encanta la voz de Jerry!! I've always loved the Jerry's voice!!🤩😍😍🥰
Awesome stuff - Jerry is a rock god and the best news is that he is still rocking as hard as ever with AIC reformed - I am just thankful a few of the bands from the early 90's are still putting out some new material here and there, a lot of deaths and carnage from that era - some things in rock and roll never change I guess.
Jerry is holding it together like a champion. He makes a superb frontman with "Heaven Beside You" harmony and unforgettable riffs. Sometimes PTSD kicks in six months later if you let it in. Getting up on stage after your BF has just died takes a kind of courage not too many people possess.Don't step down you were made to be a genuine frontman.
I love jerry!!
Jerry Cantrell is the Keanu Reeves of his peers man 🖤🖤🖤🖤
Good analogy . . . he is the sweetest, kindest man. Also flying solo, like Keanu, without a wife or kids.
Honestly besides the quality of the recording, rhis is the best solitude performance ive heard, better than the studio imo.
Jerry is such a cool front guy, he can get crowd going! He connects the crowd idk its weird to explain, but Jerry imo is a fucking genius.
Jerry rocks! DuVall rocks! Long live Alice in Chains!
Anger Rising just hits ya like a ton of bricks 🎸🎸🎸🎸🤟🤟🤟🤟🔥😆😆😆😆🤟
Opening guitar licks in Solitude... VERY Zeppelinesque!!!💯
Jerry is amazing! Always has been! Multitalented… guitar 🎸 🔥, , vocalist… amazing song writer! Wrote much of AICs treasures!
He ROCKS with Lyne (missed greatly) Solo, or with New AIC!
One of the most underrated Artists out there still bringin it!
ROCK ON my friend! 💯
I will never unsee this
I didn’t know DuVall sang with them back then?!
Well, mystery solved, maybe, always wondered about AIC's musical tastes, got my answer here with the reference to Robby Kreiger. As if we needed another reason to love them! Interesting to see William Duvall in 2002. Great Fit. Happy they're making new record as we write this, and hope they tour in TX, And the South, hopefully at a good venue like the Majestic or Verizon, or Myerson, casino shows in ballrooms are fine if you get first 10 rows, after that, it's hard to breath as everyone is squished in and these old bones can't take it.
Fan of AIC since the beginning...just saw them live for the first time last month. COMPLETELY MIND BLOWING!! What a night! AIC AND KORN.. as said, there is no replacing Layne, everyone KNOWS that, but William IS the best second! He sings Laynes parts with HONOR and the new songs just crushes it!! If there ever was someone to compliment jerry's vocals outside of Layne, it is William! Can't we all just quit with this Layne and William garbage... what happened has happened.. we lost a GREAT.. ENJOY WHAT IT IS!
Wow aic and korn in the same night, must have been epic.
@@ssherrierableDude.. FULLY EPIC!! Sean and Ray ruled that night! top 3 in my book... NIN #1, RATM #2, Korn/AIC #3
My happy place Jerry and Will belting out some good vibes .
Didn't know Duvall was with them this whole time. Nice.
