Thank you for this video. Helped me solve my problem! BTW, I found that a small putty knife worked well as a substitute for a metallic plate to insert in the fuel door.

Thank you! Mine was frozen shut but wouldn't open even after thawing with hair dryer. Your method worked like a charm.

The reason the inside release doesn't work is because there no leverage due to it is broken off of the brace, bolt is missing or broken.
It should not flop around like yours.

Is there a way to replace that plunger? Mine is moving freely and I can’t close the gas door because the plunger doesn’t move back to its original place.

Thanks again. This helped me to open the stuck fuel tank door and to troubleshoot the problem.
In order to replace a rusted fuel tank filler pipe, I had removed the plastic liner inside the fuel tank door. After I finished the job and replaced the plastic liner and locking mechanism, the fuel tank door became stuck. Using your technique and an assistant, I was finally able to open the door without damaging the locking mechanism.
To find out why the problem occurred, I pulled away the cloth liner inside the trunk on the left, and accessed the locking mechanism. After some trials, I discovered that the outer sleeve of the cable was not being held securely in the notch that is provided in the locking mechanism. The mechanism is made from a soft, brass-colored pot metal (not up to the usual high standards of Toyota), and the notch probably opened up a bit more than it should. By squeezing the notch a little with a Channel Lock pliers, I was able to make the cable sleeve fit more securely. Everything seems to work properly now.
I think the cable became dislodged from the lock mechanism when I was trying to reinstall it. I did not know how to access the locking mechanism from the trunk, so I used a long-nosed pliers to hold it in place while I installed the specialty nut over the movable locking pin. It slipped out of my hands a number of times, and one of these times, the cable sleeve probably became dislodged from the lock mechanism.
Thank you so much for your careful video. Without it, I would still be trying to resolve this annoying problem.

Peter Finn I was able to shimmy it open with an old credit card ...not sure if the mechanism is broke or what as the latch does not release the door anymore. I won't bother to fix it.. As long as I can open it ..2001 pathfinder.

thank you very much, it open my cover but the plunger that you oiled was fine and working, My cover had a hinge failure, instead of a typical metal coil spring, it is a plastic hinge. There is another man that made a video how to fix it. Using a paper clamp. But he did not explain how to take out the plastic hinge. My is 99 camry. Your camry is older

Peter, you no doubt have good intentions making these videos, but this one in 2015 and the earlier one in 2014 are way too long and completely mis-diagnose the problem and the proper solution which is the spring that opens the door, once the plunger moves out of the way.
See this other video ruclips.net/video/ft3USRKew_c/видео.html and please delete these long and mis-informed videos that Google suggests ahead of a much better solution.

Actually this video helped way me more than the one you sited. Perhaps it's good to have both options as sometimes it's the latch needing lubricating (as in this video and my issue) or your spring is lost or broken (the video you site but not my issue at all). I definitely needed something to prior the door open because the latch was stuck. So 'NO' please do not delete this video as it's not misinformed at all.
