Possibly the greatest soundtrack for any FPS in history. I still workout to this music to this day, and it's been about 15 years now. I benched 600 lbs (with a shirt) for the first time to this track in particular. Felt like I belonged on Mount Olympus for about 10 seconds after the lift.
When Quake 2 came out, it was the most exciting and gripping game up to that time. The game grabbed you from the first minute, and the Sonic Mayhem music was a big part of that.

It served as the blueprint for most new school shooters after it since it dumped the previously established trope of speed and labyrinthine key hunting for something more realistic. But looking back, I'd say I still prefer Unreal over Half Life. After playing tons of tactical shooters I really don't like the general direction the genre has taken. Not blaming Half Life, but as Civvie says "later shooters learned all the wrong lessons from Half Life"

Every time a new Quake came out, people payed $$ upgraded their computer specs. Intel loved id software for that reason. Then Unreal, Half-life etc.. kinda took over a bit from there. Nevertheless, id software and John Carmack have achieved a special place in gaming history.

I put my Quake II CD into a portable music player when I was going outside or for train/bus rides. This was before the smartphone era, so it made my trips rad.
Sonic Mayhem's Quake II Soundtrack is a perfect masterpiece of the Rock/Metal genre. Its quality, its instruments are impeccable and the soundtrack's already perfect sound is, in my opinion, impossible to replicate and just as hard to remaster. Quad Machine is also my no.1 favorite in the OST, perfect when you get THE SUPER SHOTGUN!
This is one of those tracks you remember from when you were young and you have in mind your memory of it might get spoiled by it not living up to your exceptations, but once you hear it again its even better, way better.

Unfortunately ALL the big fps games nowadays just have orchestral music. They're all just trying to rip each other off. Quake 2, Half-Life and Unreal Tournament were both unique and engaging with their own styles, even though they both involved aliens. Now...no comment.

I was 12 when I played Quake 2 and spun its very CD in the player to keep listening on the OST when I was away from the PC... awesome memories. This music is fantastic!
This song makes me miss the old days of the Rocket Arenas.. 20 people running around tight spaces firing rockets at every angle possible. The old days of RAGING and never realizing you were getting your ass handed to you by an 8 year old. I grew up in a fortunate 90s gaming family which owned a rental store and arcade machines, I had every system up to the fabled NEO-GEO and plenty of Arcade cartridges for them. Siigh those were the days.
Well it is industrial metal or industrial grunge you can't really tell. But my point is why should it be covered it would sound terrible without the original guitar...

There were 2 video game soundtracks that would be on instant repeat on my stereo as a little kid. Quake 2 and Starsiege. Special thanks to Sonic Mayhem for not only making one of the best video game soundtracks of all time, but for making some of the greatest heavy metal of all time.

+mknomad5 Awesome dude. It's actually not steams fault really. The original MP3 sound track was on the actual CD that went into the disc drive, instead of in the game files; and the music would play straight from the CD. I had the same issue with Quake 1 which was fixed by mods.

well, I own a copy of every Quake on Steam because my CD's are long gone, I remember the 90's where having that disc was like a sign of badassness. I have been a Quake fan since the 1 level test version leaked before Q1 came out, where you could run around and spawn a Shambler who could not see you. It was still mind-blowing playing in a full 3d environment with polygons you could walk around in a full circle rather than 2d sprites that was the standard at the time.

Almost done with the remaster. Damn time is flying. Makes you miss the times when shooters ruled the world of gaming. RIP
