I’m only 12 and in year 6. I just had an epiphany that I wanted to be a dentist so I’ve been scrolling through videos all day. I’ve been convinced that video games are quite irrelevant and I should work as hard as I can in school.

i’m in yr 10 interested in dentistry
i’ve had fillings, a root canal, teeth taken out and currently wearing braces, as time goes on i only get more n more interested in dentistry however my grades aren’t the best, im not completely horrible at science but maths and science r honestly rlly hard for me
edit: yh i’m not getting involved in medicine, i got 7/80 on my recent maths test

Hi Dr Yewande! I have a question about dentistry. I am in year 11 right now and for mocks I have received grade 7s for chemistry & biology and they were my lowest grades and because GCSEs are cancelled this year, mocks matters a lot. I do like science but it doesn't come naturally to me as I am a more of a 'English' person and do better in essay based subjects. However, I am interested in dentistry. What A level combination would open up more opportunities? I plan to do Biology, Chemistry and Psychology. Is that fine? Are my grades good enough? I was also interested in Optometry, is dentistry more competitive? Is medicine more competitive than dentistry? Sorry, I couldn't find your Instagram (it wasn't working). Thank you so much!
I'd say dentistry is more competitive than optometry, but medicine is more competitive than dentistry! & about your grades, you can look up individual university's grade requirements, most want specific grades for maths & engl, rather than science tbh, but defo research! I know UoB place emphasis on gcse's, but it'll differ.
@@kiran4078 dentistry is at the same level of competitiveness as medicine, there are only 14 dental schools in the UK

Best to work hard. You need 7 to 9s in gcses in at least 5 gcses so work hard. Good that you invest in your future from such a young age

Do you need to take English? i'm really bad at it :( I know you said that the main ones that they look back at are chemistry, biology, maths and English but then you said you can take chemistry and biology and some other subjects? So do you have to have English or is it mainly just chemistry and biology?

I wish I had picked different a levels , I want to go into dentistry and always have, the subjects I picked are totally irrelevant to what I want to do. I got my a levels in 2019. Does any one have any advice on what I could do
You could you an access course? or find a university that offer a foundation year

@Mo AL hey , you could do an access course with a local college which is generally 2 days a week like Yewande mentioned in a previous comment. Or you could try distance learning , which is online and then exams in person. Since I made this comment I’ve now had a change in which path I’d like to take. So sorry I can’t give too much advice but I hope this helps in some way!

i need a dentist i was recommended to Chesterfield Orthodontic
and they replied that they only accepted patients through the NHS from a referral system called Rego by a general dentist. Because they cannot accept references from the patients themselves
Since I never had a dentist in the UK how do I order one?

I have a question what if you have a associate degree and go to dental school for hygenist and u decide u want to become a dentist . Do you have to go back for two more years at college and then two more at dental school? Or how would that happen
So, I'd want to ask you something. I've done terribly in recent years. In grades 9 and 10, I received 60% and 59 percent in English, and 90% and 75% in Math, respectively. Will I be able to get into a top institution if my grades improve in the next two years?

Try to find virtual experience, I’m sure u can do some physical ones when lockdown and Covid is less stricter
Try spring pod I was accepted after writing a statement for the application giving me 2 weeks worth of experience by completing activities and quizzes all online!

@Yewande i got a 7 in chem and both languages for gcse an a six in bio and maths and i am now doing chemistry bio and sociology at a level, would that effect my applications into uni?

To become a dentist what work experience do you need? I mean wha type of work do you need to do?
Most unis say 2 weeks I suggest 1 week in each type of speciality for experience like 1 week dentist, 1 week hospital, 1 week GP etc

One of my family friend is a dentist and he said that he had about 500k in debt 💸
Studying in the UK, it is 9k a year and the last year of dentistry is funded by the NHS. So it’s approximately 36k. Keep in mind these are only applicable if you are a uk resident. ☺️

@Crunchy Celery Yes, that’s true but the comment I was referring to said that they knew someone that studied dentistry with a debt of 500k as a result of tuition fees, which is not applicable to the UK.
I’m not saying dentists can’t earn 500k. With a highly successful private practice, that’s definitely plausible

There is money with ur of course with more experience money raises, I haven’t heard about the suicide rate though because it seems very work life balanced
