A poem I wrote with this piece and performance in mind. Sokolov’s touch is mystical and sublime. In Beatitude The sonic boulders float and dip the dark, austere as stone, as if from marble made, fragmented on the angel’s feathered sound and bound beneath the lid all keyed and laid. A tremor trails the tender touching hands that heave the heavy hammers on her wings; some portion of the Gods do we behold for in the fade of afterglow it brings deliverance on down in beatitude, to bathe the eyes of old men who would weep; with sweetest lips of silence they convene- their drowsy hearts endowed for youth to keep. Some hands can breathe in other atmospheres to court the colours waiting in the night, that swirl where shadows rest themselves and reap the shimmer of the sun’s slow setting light, if they should pass the threshold of a dream, synthesised in melodies melding stream, where harboured harmonies will hoist a mast so they may sail to music’s shore at last.
Someone commented previously that he was 14 at this performance , but observation of his appearance would seem to belie that and, I believe this was recorder in 1991 when he would have been 20. Thanks. This is truly a gem.
@@fslubin not sure if I've heard that one, but I absolutely detest his other Rameau performances, in large part because his trills are so out of balance . In fact, with the exception of some Bach - - like this, but not WTC-- I find his Baroque playing varies from eccentric to intolerable.
Glenn Gould was right when he said that this kind of 'emotional' approach was not part of Bach's musical language. I find Kempff's playing from the '60s (Ich ruf' zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ, BWV 639) more appropriate, especially when I contemplate the era in which Bach lived. Romanticism simply does not belong to his monumental style.
The pianist with the velvet touch - the same as ever!

Mine too...
Let this music reach the deep into the heart of every human being and there will be no wars.
Im sure Fredrick The Great heard this and many others, he never let his musical sentiments get in the way of a good war
Let me express my thanks to you for your words. Very warm.
That's what Wagner says 😂
Yes, maybe.... But...? Friedrich the Great has been a Free-Macon as well...; my friend...;-)-...!@davyroger3773
He puts his soul on the keyboard, this is so touching, warm and wonderful ❤️
I am shocked. Thank you Bach, and Sokolov!!!!
What a spiritually interpretation!

It was recorded by Zoya Belyaeva in the Leningrad State Philharmonia, Great Hall 26.06.1991 specially for the program "5th wheel".
Wonderful cantabile and gentleness of this great chorale from Orgelbüchlein.

-- in 1991 when he would have been 20 --
What are you talking about? Sokolov was born in 1950; he was 41 here.
Thank you 🙏
Splendida interpretazione!
This is amazing
❤️
Grande!
Beautiful and meditative - I realize that I played this piece far too fast. Will change it!
OUI ! Le calme et la sérénité.

Arrangement of Feruccio Busoni, if I'm not mistaken.

the right tempo
un dio al piano
No conozco a alguien .mejor.
This version looks a bit different than the one of Bach- Busoni? Does anyone know what version Sokolov is playing?
I think it's Kempff's version
It’s his own transcription.
Gould and Sokolv........
Is it Kempff's transcription?

Try with a therapy
O un
It looks like he is playing for the camera man. With full of commitment & rather moving.
Such a pity that the sound of this recording is muffled.
This tempo is not baroque; not that that matters anymore.
BACH-TARKOVSKIJ-SOKOLOV !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Beautiful, but I prefer Lipatti’s more sedate trills.
Yes, Sokolov's helicopter blade trills are a feature of his Baroque playing. You have to love them to appreciate his playing
