    Thanks bud. I just worked on my truck last weekend. I decided to remove the DOC/soot trap from the the truck and emptied the original pipe and put it back on. I wish i would have done it years ago!!! Truck runs so much smoother. I always pictured it as just a few steel baffles because people call it a door trap. WRONG! That is a full on diesel oxidation catalyst that absolutely robs power. The truck dose blow more black smoke if i get into it so I’m a bit more cautious around other drivers but man the truck feels 10 years younger

      Sweet! Man, I do love cheap, easy fixes. What truck was this on?

      SixFiveTurboGarage.com i did this on my 94 Chevy C2500. It’s a California native F vin with 140k original miles. I dive commercial trucks and am used to driving 55mph all the time so i drive my pickup the same. I always hated going faster then 55 in the 6.5td because it felt like it was a struggle. Now after gutting the DOC at 55 it’s just waking up and set the cruise at 65 and it still doesn’t feel like it’s working as hard as before at 55. Highly recommend anyone that has one to do. Should do it again and make a video. Pretty simple job.

      @@ryanburbridge Ok, yeah. I was wondering what truck would have the soot trap, I guess the Vin F would do it.
      Awesome to know it's that easy to get a bunch more performance!

    Here in finland we have also heaters with their own water pump and termostat so the engine can be heated to 60degrees celsius. I'll put a 5kw webasto on mine so it won't be dependent on electricity.

      Yeah, I was tempted to get into more varieties of heaters but I figured I'd stick with just this type. Maybe I'll have an opportunity to cover the rest one day.

    Why 2 ? I live in Winnipeg. It gets to -40 here. One block heater is usually enough. Except the year the wind chill made it -60C. I find in the cold, a battery tender helps more.

    • @SixFiveTurboGaragecom
      @SixFiveTurboGaragecom  4 года назад +2

      You're definitely right on the battery tender. That and good cables are a must. As for the two heaters, you have to remember that my company motto is "Overkill Is Underrated" : )>
      But there are other reasons, one is just peace of mind. This is a Prudhoe Bay truck and I still go to Alaska every year. Just the other day it was -60C with the wind chill up there, just like you said. So if I ended up being in those conditions, I'd be good. Which leads to the third reason...
      These things are not easy to change. Lack of space, draining your coolant, it's a big deal for me, and I've had them go bad before. They are cheap enough that if I have the truck apart for something that allows me to get the work done, I'ts smart to put a second one in there for the extra heat, but for a spare, too, if one goes out.
      But really I just like overkill.

    I just had to do this two weeks ago, then again last week. The kats heater I bought heated up twice and failed, returned it and got a different brand from NAPA and it's been great since. Not a fun job to do twice.

    • @SixFiveTurboGaragecom
      @SixFiveTurboGaragecom  3 года назад +2

      Boy, that's the truth. I haven't used mine much but it's worked fine when I have so far. These Zero Start heaters are physically a better quality but only time will tell if they are built internally better.

    Very informative... I never knew the location or watts... tell me more about the starter bracket... is it factory? I don’t want a broken block

      Oh boy, yeah. You definitely need the bracket. And yup, it's factory.
      You can see a bit more in this starter change article.

      And to be clear, This heater I'm showing you is in a non-stock location. The stock heater is on the drivers side in the middle (on mine anyway). I just wanted to add a secondary one for more heat and this was the only location that it would fit.

    My 6.5L has these ports but they’re capped. No way to get a heater in. I found a plug that goes to the heater but I don’t see a heater at all. The only port that I can’t see is this one you’re working with, which is behind the starter. How do I remove the inner caps? Or is there definitely a stock heater behind my starter? None of this makes sense as the plug that I found is on the driver side, and the starter is on the passenger side. Help

    Quite a few bad reviews on the Amazon link do you think they didnt install properly ?

    • @SixFiveTurboGaragecom
      @SixFiveTurboGaragecom  2 года назад

      Very possible . But man, reviews are so hard to interpret, I just looked at them again and I also saw a bunch that have had great luck with them. I guess the fact that there are more good than bad says something. I haven't had any issues with mine so I would have no problem using another one unless there is another out there that is clearly better.
      It's just getting hard to find quality stuff these days.

    • @SixFiveTurboGaragecom

      Are they Zero Start? The cheapies can burn out quick.
      Check the cords before you pull the units out of the block, they usually go bad first.
      Other than that, it's not an automotive issue since they are not part of any automotive system, it could be a bad circuit that you're plugging into.
