You can completely lose yourself in the world of vintage Juniors and Specials. Each one has a completely unique personality and its own tone. The more you play them, the more you notice the nuances. And when you connect with the right one, its pure magic. My '55 Junior and '58 Special are lifelong keepers.

I really don't think the '98 "60" single cut is brighter at all. In fact, it may be louder, but it certainly is a darker, more rounded tone. The 57 has a great sparkle to the highs that sort of drape over each note.
I have a '60 LPS and it certainly has that nice harmonic overtone to everything. Particularly on the bridge, which also happens to be a very angry pickup.

The Vox breaks up early so we run it on around 2-3 and it doesn't really get louder after that just more crunchy and compressed. It is a wonder that rig. Doug and Pat

    They both sounded good enough.
These excellent videos just fall short of shovelling legendary and imagined honour upon old instruments and provide a welcomed platform for interested parties to make an informed decision based on real world tone, playability and manufacture.

had a 77/55 LP special reissue in the 70s and it was my go to guitar. I loved it dearly. I dropped it one time and it was in the case and the head snapped where all Gibsons break. I took it to Paul Reed Smith in Annapolis where I lived as he was "the"go to luthier back then and he did his magic and it was perfect again! I have not heard a better sounding P90 LP that has sounded that good yet.

From the Gibson forum: (Gibson CS reply) The name was spunoff from the original internal part number for this pickup "PU-90".

Hey guys! Love the videos! Looking forward to seeing more. Question / Comment: Why do you only demo the guitars on the bridge pickup? I would have liked to have heard the Specials with the neck pickup as well. Especially the one in which the neck pickup was about 1k more output than the bridge. Demoing the neck pickups would be helpful / informative. Again, thanks for the videos.

Great video, I just bought a TV Yellow DC from early '60 with the same neck pickup position as the '59. You guys nail it here - it's that throaty powerful sound, and the stoptail just connects the string straight into the wood.
The originals sound more mellow and powerful to me, it might be the magnets de-gaussing or the wood aging, or it might just be my imagination! But to me these Specials all sound very different from each other.
I wonder whether you might compare the neck pickups between the single cuts and double cuts, since it's in a different position you might expect more high end out of the DCs?
Anyway thanks a bunch for the video series, it's always great to see real guys playing the real stuff without the sales pitch. Cheers

Thanks Simon, the show is what we do anyway but with a camera on. If you haven't been to our web site you should, where we have all the shows and photos. Let us know if you run into any more AC-10 SRT amp heads. D & P

I’m a total P90 fan. Used to play Humbuckers but switched. I also enjoy the wraparound bridge you seem to get more sustain from them and I’ve had no intonation issues but have switched most out to Mojoaxe or Music City compensated bridges. Can’t hardly tell they’re compensated, great design. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for all that and yes, we do have a band called GEEZER here in Portland. You can hear Pat play a little at the end of the 335 show where we do a bit of Crossroads. We'll get him involved a bit more in the future shows so he can show off his stuff. D & P

The only reason we didn't in this video was the length of the video which we wanted at no more than 15 minutes but given the reaction to longer videos (people don't care) as well as any reason for us to return to the Specials for a "Neck Pickup Review" we'll be doing just that in the future. Great comment. D & P

  • @DP-hn6rl

You can squeeze similar sounds out of them all even though they’re all so clearly different. I think between pickups and wiring/caps you can get really close. But if you’ve got the money, that 1957 special truly has magic in it and it stood out from the rest.

Great video guys and a great channel..
I have a 2003 double cut special and it does buzz more at some gigs than others but I love the thing because it sounds great.. It also has a tune o matic which I thought was a good thing for that run of specials...
Once again great video and great playing dude....;-)
    Those old guitars are awsome.

Not sure about the p90s but I heard that they are called tv yellow because it looked good on the black and white tvs as white didn't work so well.

Being the owner of an LPJr Pelham Blue 2011, I'd enjoy seeing one or a current issue LP Junior thrown into the review mix. Curious about your take on the obeche & baked maple boards on those Juniors. How about adding a Billie Joe Armstrong LP Jr Double Cut? Enjoyed this video very much. Thank you.

That 57 sounds great! I just got a 2012, gloss black, single-cutaway, and what all would I need to do to that guitar to get it's tone closer to the 57? It seems thinner and brighter, less woody.

Really nice blues licks. I started watching your channel for the cool guitars and now I do more for the playing.
But...why doesn't Pat ever play? He could do bass or drums while Doug plays guitar or vice versa. :) I bet you two have a band. If not, it'd be cool to see you start one!

P90's were called that because that's how many peas were in a tin which ties in with the P38.

Hey guys, I just bought a Gibson Les Paul special custom, color is copper and is amazing! I would like to know the year in which they made and their origin. in the back it has a number which are a 0 1018!!!

I have the same guitar with the p100s. I believe its a '99. It doesn't have the bound neck and has trapezoid rather than dot inlays. Therefore I'm not sure if it is the Les Paul Special Reissue or another model

Maybe I missed it, but you said the output on the Singlecut Reissue pickups were hotter than the '57 at over 8k, do you know what the DC resistance on the '57's pickups were?

Fröken Åsa And why do they call them a 1960 re-issue since they didn't make a SC in '60. It seems like everyone knows this but Gibson. Doug and Pat
