The 15 year old that would have bought this guitar when it was new, is now 77. Could that kid have ever imagined that this guitar would have seen how music has changed in the years between then and now, and that Phil X would be auditioning it. Amazing life these guitars have.
My grandpa is that 15 yr old kid. And passed it down to me, “baby”. His mother bought it for him while working at the mills in North Carolina. I carry the tradition. Extremely blessed to have the story
I don't want understand people. People don't understand freedom & fun. This guy, Phil, he's an amazing player, AMAZING. He's funny, happy, what is the fucking problem with being happy nowadays ? To me seems like he enjoy life and enjoy music and playing guitar. What is the fucking problem with enjoying it ? Does everything needs to be serious and boring ? Does ? Great musician, great person, great guitar playing. All fine to me. Me and Jon Bongiovi we cannot both be wrong... not at all ! Go get laid boring people...
for several weeks i thought that guitar sucked and i wanted to quit playing because i felt like everyone outshined me with all their fancy jazz thingy scales and what not. UNTIL! i found Phil X who got me excited to play again. Pentatonic scales (Its where its AT) great playing/sound AND a great personality just made me want to pick up the guitar again and play like never before. So thanks Phil, really thank you. You're a great inspiration for me from now on. Rock on!
Love PhilX....love the old background with guitars adorning the walls......I'm thankful for the videos, but that background is just soulless mindfk.... err...great playing, thanks for sharing
Dave Davies is the one who invented that distortion sound by taking a razor blade to his Eplico amp. He used a Harmony Meteor on You Really Got Me. Ray wrote the song, but never had anything todo with the guitar sound or style of it. Ray used a Fender Telecaster also, and would just play during Daves solos.
It's not the noise that is the problem as it is all in the next room from me when I play (and safe enough for my hearing). Ideally I'd like to have the amp's controls handy to me when I play & record. There's some DI type boxes from Radial & I'm now aware the speaker leads can be longer so I just have to check the gauge of wire in the cables I run to the cabinets so I don't lose too much tone in the cable run. Thank you for your interest & advice.
I think we can come to the conclusion that both the p-90, vintage or otherwise, and the PX-90 are brilliant pick ups and the designers of both are geniuses.
It's on the bottom of the rack of amps under that Marshall. I honestly dont even know if you can see it in this video, but you can see it there in the other vids they've done at this studio.
I have that text tone! I modified it to work with my Android powered GS3 after I sold my iPhone, because I loved it so much. I was at the dentist on Saturday getting a root canal done when I got a text, of course its the PhilX OWWWWWW immediately my dentist stopped and asked if I was in pain, I said no its my phone and he laughed. Best text tone ever, always turns heads, perfect for when you are around a random hot girl too, its fuckin multi-purpose!
It's not a stupid question at all. And you are somewhat correct. The shorter the lead, the better the signal is and the less chance you have of introducing EM interference into your system. But considering the head is pushing (usually) 8 or 16 ohms to the cabinet, longer cables aren't really too bad. I would imagine that in the studio Phil is in, the head goes to a patch panel, then from there is gets boosted and/or filtered to the cab.
I completely understand your appreciate for Vintage equipment. Just a note, the PX-90 is not modded. Phil and Tim designed it and it is manufactured exactly as intended. No mods are needed, anybody that purchases it receives it exactly as designed. I am sure you are aware of this, but in case others are reading.
Your music culture is pretty much shit because you listen to turd like Justin Beiber and one direction. Boy you need to lock yourself up away from that gay ass music and get some rock inside you. Pop music causes homosexuality, and you don't really want to be an ass bandit all your life, go get yourself some pussay.!!!
joe clayton Oh man you got it all wrong! I never listened to bieber and one direction shit xD this stuff is for prepubecent girls. but I indeed listened to more generic and commercial rock like muse, green day, red hot chilly peppers or 21 pilot. Overall, I'm more of a metalhead but I really enjoy everything that has electric guitar in it! from punk to hard and indie and alternative too! Pussy for life bro I meant it was shit one the classic rock side. I didn't expressed myself too well
I suppose that in a guitar with a single pickup the electrical circuit is simpler and the signal is more direct, since it does not have to go through the selector etc.
Kinks had both Ray and Dave Davies. I just watched a YT documentary this week where DAVE explained he slashed his speaker with a RAZOR after a fight with his girlfriend. He then proceeded to do it again in the video showing before then slashing it and after. VERY COOL to see! It was in the middle of a Tony Iommi & Brian May documentary where Tony was explaining the influence on his tone.
Thank you so much for the informed reply. I have a small home studio. I really have to take care of my ears & can't be near the cabinets at all! My amp is in the next room & I'm running a 20 ft (low impedance) guitar cable. It's a bitch when you have to run from 1 room to the next to adjust the settings. If I could have the amp in the main room & run a lead or some sort of Radial DI into the cabinet in the next room things would be more efficient. I was always told short leads for amp - cabinet.
*WARNING* Stupid question follows: How do you get the sound from the amp head into the speakers in the next room? What sort of switching system is used? I always thought the amp head had to be used with a short lead to the cabinet?
Hey Mr X what album is the song evil robot on? You should defo play that again sometime it's an amazing song :) (You play it once before on the Rastafari Steelcaster but like to hear it on a a les apul or something) It's in A major right? Thanks alot \,,/
I played that very 55 at FA and I have a guitar with the PX-90 and I respectfully disagree with you Buzzsaw. If you love P-90's and have not played the PX-90 personally, give it a shot. Hands down the best P90 I have heard.
The 15 year old that would have bought this guitar when it was new, is now 77. Could that kid have ever imagined that this guitar would have seen how music has changed in the years between then and now, and that Phil X would be auditioning it. Amazing life these guitars have.

Leslie West made some great music with one of those
Phil X is like the Zaphod Beablebrox of guitar but actually knows what he's doing. \m/
That is a perfect description
Hey Phil, he’s just this guy, ya know?
I don't want understand people. People don't understand freedom & fun. This guy, Phil, he's an amazing player, AMAZING. He's funny, happy, what is the fucking problem with being happy nowadays ? Great musician, great person, great guitar playing. All fine to me.
Me and Jon Bongiovi we cannot both be wrong... not at all !

I never cease to be shocked at how good the Evil Robot sounds. GOD!

That guitar flip was frigging badass
Juniors are freakin amazing! My favorite FA vids are those of juniors and the firebird dang!
I was at that gig in Glasgow and met Phil briefly afterwards. Great fun, great gig.

Always a good day when the Fretted Americana videos drop into the Inbox!
That's cool that I was one of the lucky ones to get that text tone. I love it. So much fun!
goddamn that ripoli sounds incredible. So lush and full and warm. I love it.
for several weeks i thought that guitar sucked and i wanted to quit playing because i felt like everyone outshined me with all their fancy jazz thingy scales and what not.

"Gonna Go Down" = wicked awesome tone.
Favorite Kings-X - Gretchen Goes To Nebraska. Just love that 8 string bass sound.
"cause this is in the pass, and this is a present, and the future is around the corner" love that!
Thank you for uploading this at my birthday!
Love PhilX....love the old background with guitars adorning the walls......I'm thankful for the videos, but that background is just soulless mindfk....

Saw Phil yesterday HE'S COOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can't wait for the new album. It sounds like it's gonna be the best one yet.

*Sees price*
*Cries*
I was part of that Braveheart cry! Amazing gig! Cant wait for the next one.
I just bought that guitar!!! I was born in 1955, so it's my BIRTHY!!!
he's not only an awesome guitarist, but also a philosopher: this is in the past, this is the present and the future is around the corner. obviously.
You're totally right! As soon as he played that chord I got huge Opeth vibes.
I was talking about the first tuning he was using right before Mississippi Queen, thanks for helping dude :D
God i want this guitar
Look on guitar center for Gibson 2015 Les Paul Junior, they are selling in this color as well as TV yellow and Heritage Cherry, for $899 U.S. Dollars.
Thats an awsome price but i dont think they ship to the UK :'(
The only bad thing is that the guitar has not same quality and it follows with a stupid g force....
Just got 1 off ebay, awaiting delivery, I'm so excited

sounds amazing with the Roppoli
im still kinda sad the recordings arent being done at fretted americana, it just dont have the feel here
Totally agree. It was always nice to look over Phil's shoulder at the great looking axes lining the walls!
When you come op with a good song I'll be waiting. Glad those guitar classes are fjnaly paying off. Good for you!
Iguess yo this is a dead site, maybe a dead band. You don't have any talent Iguess you fall off.
Phil X and Paul Gilbert need to do a record together. They are both torch carriers for the salvation of rock!
I think we can come to the conclusion that both the p-90, vintage or otherwise, and the PX-90 are brilliant pick ups and the designers of both are geniuses.
Woot! King's X! More people need to know them!
First tone reminded me of STP's, great vid!
You’re awesome Phil
Checked out King's X thanks to this video - they are quite excellent.
You're so right about that little part in Mississippi Queen . I added it to my arsenal. Thanks man! \m/
I’ve got my 57 and I’m 66 years old...a lot of guitars have come and gone but my 57 stays
Pretty cool chord sequence there Phil
Best. Intro. Ever.
Ray Davies wrote the songs, Dave Davies played the lead guitar and slashed the speaker cones.
that is a great sounding gibson.
This Les Paul Junior was built in 1955, but it looks more mint and new than my 2008 Les Paul Junior :p
Uh Phil, that little fill Was a piano, courtesy of Steve Knight, who Leslie hated (I'm friends with Leslie). Love your playing!
Sooooo much Phil X epicness
It's on the bottom of the rack of amps under that Marshall. I honestly dont even know if you can see it in this video, but you can see it there in the other vids they've done at this studio.
the guitar part he played from the new record was amazing
That guitar is so mint
I have that text tone! I modified it to work with my Android powered GS3 after I sold my iPhone, because I loved it so much. 4:50 the most leathery, velvety tone ive ever heard, or will hear, in my life
Imagine how amazing that beast would sound with a PX-90!
guy is awesome... luv the way he beats the shit outta all those vintage guitars....

Thanks alot Phil!! :) I'm gonna give that song a go myself!
Richard, Loughborough, England
Phil,I hope you'll last forever,you're one of a kind!
I like the drills song better with this distorted les paul, rather than the acoustic in the studio version. The sound here is AWESOME :)
I've had that stuck in my head for the last two weeks. Haha, It's part of my greetings now,
absolutely the coolest guitar ever....
Holy jesus that sounds good
All of the day and All of the night- The Kinks!

I love watching theses vids for all the music references he does.
My music culture is pretty muych shit on the rock side so I try to fix it
Your music culture is pretty much shit because you listen to turd like Justin Beiber and one direction.
Pussy for life bro
I meant it was shit one the classic rock side.
I didn't expressed myself too well
Thanks you Phil! \m/
Man, I love P-90's! This old LPJR is HOT.
I suppose that in a guitar with a single pickup the electrical circuit is simpler and the signal is more direct, since it does not have to go through the selector etc.
with the tone rolled completely off it sounds kinda bass fuzzy but sounds so sick! i want one!
Phil, You're one more BADASS!
Kinks had both Ray and Dave Davies. I just watched a YT documentary this week where DAVE explained he slashed his speaker with a RAZOR after a fight with his girlfriend. He then proceeded to do it again in the video showing before then slashing it and after. VERY COOL to see! Sounds so weird with the tone all the way down, but I love it. Super cool.
i think it depends on the guitar. the P90 in this Jr definitely sings sweetly through it.
All of the day and all of the night- The Kinks!
Hey Phil, Where can i get this awesome song gonna go down you said?
cant find it on the web
Thank you so much for the informed reply. I have a small home studio. I really have to take care of my ears & can't be near the cabinets at all! thanks, man.
Was looking back to see what Phils favorite band is. Didn't notice someone already got to it. Kings X. Oh well tried to help.
Giving kings x some love!!!! I love dog-man.
yeah man that's my guitar right there!
I love how everybody is freaking out :D when he does his swingy thingy. How does that sound
*WARNING* Stupid question follows: How do you get the sound from the amp head into the speakers in the next room? What sort of switching system is used? I always thought the amp head had to be used with a short lead to the cabinet?
Hey Mr X what album is the song evil robot on? You should defo play that
again sometime it's an amazing song :) (You play it once before on the Rastafari Steelcaster but like to hear it on a a les apul or something) It's in A major right?
Thanks alot \,,/
So Phil, would you like that guitar's tone more if it had an empty neck pickup pocket (route) ?
You can now do a Bass VI with the Marshall/Roppoli stack!
reminds me of back black in school of rock
look at hi expresions
thanks
KINGS CROSS PHIL!!! CROSSSS!!!! X=CROSS! eep! Keep on rockin bud!
I played that very 55 at FA and I have a guitar with the PX-90 and I respectfully disagree with you Buzzsaw. If you love P-90's and have not played the PX-90 personally, give it a shot. Hands down the best P90 I have heard.
