Wow, yeah, that fretboard is all chewed up. That's the work of an over-zealous scraper, not a Plek. After the guitar has been sprayed, and the masking is removed from the fretboard, there's often a lip of lacquer at the fretboard edge that needs to be scraped clean. Looks like a Monday morning or Friday afternoon job to me, haha.

So replace the tail piece, tuners, and pickup and you have a Charlie Starr LP junior basically? Those are most of the upgrades I do anyway. I think they’ve all been sold out because I don’t see them for sale anymore.
It’s a very cool looking guitar, unfortunate to have the poor fret work straight from the factory! It does come with a nice case and cool slide. I wonder if the slide is limited as well? I paid the same price for my LPGT so to me it seems a tad expensive.
I had a custom shop junior and the neck was worse than that, I bought it off eBay so couldn’t check it first. Really got to find the right one or try before you buy 👍
The 2 Adam Jones LPs I bought were returned for horrible QC issues. Every Mustaine V I've put hands on are messed up. I was able to get a killer Slash in 22, and the 335 I got last year is one of the best guitars Ive ever had. Gotta run the racks with Gibson. That said, I want to pick up one of these Starr sigs. Dig his playing and have been wanting a Jr for a while.
I am interested in buying a LP Junior. I have a LP Studio from 2011 that i love and that has beaten much more expensive guitars. I want a Junior because of it's simplicity, tone and raw vibe. What do you guys think? Used Juniors are rare here in europe, plus the only alternative would be a LP Junior from Maybach which are much more expensive (i owned a LP standard copy by them, awesome guitars but lack the Gibson grit and experience).
Everyone is missing the point. It's not supposed to be a stellar over the top signature model. It's what it's supposed to be. A great representation of a workhorse guitar from a workhorse of a player. The man himself is just that. Charlie don't look like a guitar hero but once you get to hear him play it all makes sense. Nothing flashy on the outside the magic is inside. Hey Ya'll! Thank you Charlie, Gibson and you as well Austin.
Nice try, but the rough edges on the fret board was just sloppy workmanship and not intentional. It is a no frills guitar but you get that from the simple color, 1 pick-up, 1 slab of mahogany, simple pick guard and no binding. The fret board on a $2K guitar shouldn't be rough like that unless it is relic-ed to match a historic guitar and this guitar is not relic-ed.
The knobs look like translucent urethane skateboard wheels. Funny, my Epiphone LP Special I P90 soap bar bridge pickup's DCR (9.2-9.3K) measures +/-.1K from the Gibson dog ear bridge pickup on my multi-meter.. That Epiphone was $ 129.99. I think one is better off just buying an affordable guitar rather than buying into the scheming for features that really don't apply to the instrument itself. A case, a decal, 2 truss rod covers, blank & labeled. Anyone can swap out Lightning bar for the more adjustable saddle piece. The Lightning bar on mine is about as spot on as it gets, it's really a matter o dialing in the set up that adjusts the intonation. That's any bridge as long as it's been located accurately. We're back to a production guitar being made famous by an artist. I think Charlie Starr takes a 1960's,-present LP Jr and makes it just as famous as a 1956 Gibson he came across. Just watched the video on that. A 1956 Jr that was owned previously by a Georgia Satellites guitarist, that was owned by others. before & after the Georgia Satellites guitarist. Even the original wasn't the one guitar that launched a career & ended up being a lifetime keeper for several guitarists. I have a feeling Charlie Starr keeps that one unless someone makes the offer he can't refuse for turning the deal down. I have guitars that doubling what I paid for them & I wouldn't sell off. Only because I know what I have vs what it would take to replace them. I don't think mine are better than the new one's, but we all know there are issues with all of them. Correcting those issues might be more work than it's worth going thru for another guitar vs the one I already lived thru that for. It may be a matter of finding a replacement right away, it may take more time. Scary how good the Guitar Center version of the LP Special I P90 was out of he box. Dialing in a set up and it was even better. I'm not saying I'm a better set up technician, bu I did have the luxury of investing my own time as labor to tweak it & take those several cuts at adjustments as it played & settled in.
That fretboard edge rough spots are just a deal breaker for a Sales Return for what they charge for this guitar. And it even looks that bad at the nut => 1st fret on the treble High E side. At any rate, the sound samples didn't sound any better or worse for what a $ 129.99 GC Epiphone LP Special I P90 sounds like for a bridge only tone. And that's a good thing for he affordable Epiphone, because it's that close to Gibson good for excellence. The Epiphone affordable is 99% a Gibson. The onlything I ended up changing on a % 130 Epiphone ? I added a customized LP 3 ply pickguard to match the knob locations. Gives it a Custom Shop vibe to it, 1 of 1.
I've often asked myself if I was to take a brand new Gibson guitar to modify which one would it be? First I own and play 4 different model's and love the theme of these guitars ! I love this unit but I feel the whole "Frankenstein" effect has been lost here ! every picture I've seen of this guitar, she looks rough !
Trogly, did you play "Hey Ya" because.this guitar is an [Outkast]? (Yes, I saw the back.) Meanwhile, you should consider playing more slide in general. I always try having the distance between the strings and the fingerboard on my guitars set to a place where I can rip with my fingertips and play slide. Both of them are crucial to me.
This guitar is without a doubt worth the extra 400 bucks over the price of a new junior. The case is fantastic and the tuner and bridge updates are nice. The slide in the case candy is also very cool. Even without those, the resale is simply going to be higher since it's a limited edition which makes it worth the extra. As far as the QC issues, the ding could have happened anytime before or after it left Gibson so I don't hold too much against them on that. Besides, I would likely do worse than that inside a couple of weeks of owning one. However, that stuff with the fretboard was unacceptable. They have the demo shop and simply should have noted the issue, marked it as demo and sold it for a hundred bucks off. Not only is that better for their reputation but they likely make more selling it directly like that than if it went out to a shop anyway. As far as this artist model goes, love it. It represents what the artist actually plays rather than creating something the artist thinks might be cool and then pulls out for a song or two for one tour.
I got an ebony model and the only QC issue I had is that it REEKED like paint. I had to let it air out. They didnt let the paint cure long enough imo. Otherwise as a massive Blackberry Smoke fan its perfect.
I'm also a huge BBS fan. I hope to someday get to even just play one. I highly doubt I will though. I asked my Sweetwater sales rep about them just last week and he told me Sweetwater sold out of them almost instantly and they weren't getting anymore because of what a limited run it was. I'm honestly just glad to know there are so many people loving BBS. They're a GREAT band!
My fretboard is pretty bad as well. Not going to return it, though. Instead, will take it to my local guitar builder and have it sanded and polished. But I can’t believe they released it like that and there are many with bad boards already in these comments.
I have 31 guitars. I've been playing for 40 years. I own one Gibson SG and it's the only Gibson I have. I watched the teaser for this guitar. If I ever get another Gibson again you can bet I'm going to track down one of these guitars. I love Charlie and I love, and I love his guitar it's a to have one for sale for such a cheap price built to the specs of a 56? I'm going to get one
Would these feel like my Les Paul Tribute? I LOVE that guitar and it's satin. I have a ton of videos with it if you don't know what guitar I'm talking about. I really love the feeling of satin MUCH more than gloss but I feel like satin gets looked at as feeling "cheap" or something. I just think it feels ultra smooth and silky whereas the gloss feels a little "sticky" to me.
It seems like every new guitar from Gibson that gets reviewed has an issue with the edge of the neck, be it tooling marks or other molestations that degrade the esthetics and potentially, the feel. When will Gibson address this? Other companies have gotten it down and many are "lesser brands".
Aw nooooo, can't believe you messed up the sticker on the back! Maybe Gibson can send you a new one! Id' be returning it for that fret board though, that's very poor QC.

That bridge looks like a bit of a nightmare if you need to replace a broken string, with it being so close to the pickup.
Last chord should be an E major
Putting the sticker on the guitar was a waste. I expect that you are returning the guitar to Gibson to repair the fingerboard.
I would hope so
I saw he had it on reverb 2 days ago. Listed at over $3k. Looks like it already sold.
Yeah some idiot will buy it for more than retail 🤣
@@gazzy_burnsbecause you can’t get one retail. They sold out😂
@@flyingburritobro68doesn’t matter - still no need to spend that money on a very average Gibson. Don’t let FOMO rule the bank!
Case is badass. Trash the decal.
Looks and sounds great. Such a pity, the terrible fretboard ruins it.
They're a GREAT band!
pshhh just 2k? lemme go get one right now
I like the part where you played a little lead/melody line over some chords!
Those definitely sold out quick. Crazy.
Of course RUclips would pop an add up right as you pluck that first string
Cool guitar, Gibson did all the “mods” I do to my juniors for me.
My fretboard is pretty bad as well. Not going to return it, though. Instead, will take it to my local guitar builder and have it sanded and polished. But I can’t believe they released it like that and there are many with bad boards already in these comments.
Waiting for the Epiphone version.
Allparts blank amber speeds are my fav
Charlie should have opted for knobs that go to 11. Cool guitar.
Think I'll stick with my LP Special Tribute P90. Really can't see what extra you get for a grand more for this one.
Fishing wire?
I think he sounds spot on like Emo Phillips.......but I love his reviews
They could have done Charlie better than send out instruments in that condition.
I need that case!!
Been waiting for this video since the guitar was announced. Looks and sounds great other than the QC issues
If you want it to be like Charlie's guitar youd have to put a Tyson tone king pickup in it.
His Real 56 Has A Duncan In It ,, According To Charlie ,,, Tyson In A Different Jr.
The tailpiece damaged the top. That is unacceptable on a new instrument.
I guess that is why I do not have any Gibsons in my collection...
Despite the reviewer obvious love for Gibson, this is pretty underwhelming. I love Gibson, Charlie and BBS, but I need more on the guitar.
Lovely sounding pickup 😉
I’d love t have one, but have no idea who Charlie star is
Check out Blackberry Smoke! The album Like an Arrow is perfect. They are worth the listen.
Hey Trogley, depending on where you come from Ya'll spelling is correct
I’m a huge Blackberry Smoke and Charlie Star fan and a huge LP JR fan as well. It’s on my want list for sure, along with everything else. lol…
I’m here for the word satin.
I'm here for the fist fret neck depth.
Don’t forget but-ton and sodder
Doofy
All Hail Satin!!🤘
What a looker damn!
Great overal vibe, definitely one junior thats on my watchlist.
I feel like you’ll sell it because of the knot on the front looking like a blemish
Hipshot makes the baby grand bridge.
I love these, however, once again, 2k? Sad.
Jealous! I’d love to grab one of these. Sounds amazing.
Aw nooooo, can't believe you messed up the sticker on the back! Maybe Gibson can send you a new one! Id' be returning it for that fret board though, that's very poor QC.
